A great mower
i am a owner operator lawnmower landscaper, i only use masport commercial mowers
they have never let me down so far, regular blade replacements and oil, spark plug, filter
change, they are not the high end like the hondas, but 1 pull away it goes, its never broken down
regular service and a bit of TLC still going and havent looked back.the mowers have paid themselves
over and over if its just luck i dont know, they wont last forever, but ill be buying new ones in the distant future

Dangerous - Do Not Buy
This mower is crap, the motor didn't last six months, the "smart chute" is faulty which caused2 broken windows and one rock to my own throat. Service department replaced the chute but after that couldn't care less about the mower. I was told I was misusing the mower. All I did was stand behind it and push it to cut the grass. Heap of crap, do not buy!

What a waste of money - Masport 486 3N1
I bought this so I didn't have to keep stopping to empty a catcher, but I have to stop almost as often to clear the great clots of grass that accumulate under the mower. It doesn't seem to spit the grass downwards, and it builds up inside the mower, specially in the back left corner, and the only way to get it out is to stop, turn off the mower and stick your hands in under it to scrape it out.
It is very noisy and rattly. I've always preferred 4 stroke mowers, because they are quieter than 2 stroke, but not this one. It's easy enough to start...Read more

So I worked out that you have to clean the air filter on the mower, so it didn't really die in the a$$. I just didn't read the instructions properly. I did that and it's working again. I have moved an... Read more
d have different sort of grass and it does a better job on it. It still feels like it's going to rattle itself to pieces, but hasn't done so yet. I still wouldn't buy another one of these, but it's chugging along ok for now.

The catcher that cant catch!!!
After purchasing this machine from bunnings a few months later the catcher had a small split in it and i went back in for them to tell me there was no warranty on the catcher.i felt this was very poor as all i had done was mow the lawndidnt even know how this happened. Then the so called smart chute clip doesn't work so it lets grass come out the back.i now have to use a timber wedge to keep it closed.this has nothing to do with the small split either.I always had a victor which my last one went for ten years and got conned by the man at bunnings that this mower was great. This has a great cut and would be a great product if not for the cheap plastic chute that failed after 2 months so i would advoid purchasing.

a great disppointed 486
I purchased a masport 486 from bunnings 1 year ago. The lawn mower stopped one day and took it back to Bunnings, who in turn sent it to an authorised agent of Masport. They have called me to say it is not under warranty as it is due to the mower being tipped over " oil tipped.
This is not the case as I am the only one that uses the mower on a flat block and it has never been tipped over.
I rang Masport warranty section to discuss but was fobbed off.Very bad form from Masport and the warranty is based on what they say only and it appears the...Read more

Gets the Job Done!
I found this mower started first go, was relatively quiet, felt light & easy to control, &, unlike other reviews I have seen, stopped when throttle was put into the right setting. The only minor issue was that the catcher wasn't as easy to reattach as other mowers I've had, but may come with time.

Very happy
I bought the Masport 486 after returning a Ryobi ( full marks to Ryobi and Bunnings for a no fuss return) which was cumbersome and then had mechanical problems. The 486 starts easy and is easy to push and move around. The catching efficiency is the best I have experienced. Construction is sturdy in the general body and the catcher mulcher attachments. I am impressed and recommend this mower.

Satisfied So Far
My last lawn mower review was for a small Victa and, at the time, I was satisfied with its performance. I moved to a bigger property and the Victa’s smaller size meant I had to spend longer mowing the lawn; with more trips to the compost bin. When it died, I was… kind of okay with it as I needed a larger mower anyway. The Victa only lasted a few years, without servicing, and to have it repaired would cost the same as buying a new, cheap, mower.
This time I bought the Masport Mulch and Catch 486 3’n1 Lawn Mower Petrol from Bunnings and so far...Read more
, I’m satisfied with it. The Masport makes more noise compared to the Victa and I believe a culprit is the vibrating start-up cord. That said, the Masport is doing its job. Only time will tell how much longer it lasts than the Victa. Obviously it would last longer if I serviced it but ain’t nobody got time for that ;) I've had this mower for 6 months and I have not experienced any issues with it.Similar opinion? Huge disappointment
Brand new 486 ST 3N'1 model bought Feb 2015 from Bunnings. Throttle didn't work so there was no way to turn it off. I ended up tipping it on its side to drain the petrol but this resulted in engine oil draining into the carburettor and air filter, and a massive smoke plume ensued before it eventually stopped.Throttle is covered under warranty; cleaning out the oil is at my expense. Don't know how else I could have got it to stop. Not happy. My first and last Masport. Don't yet know how it goes on the grass but will find out in 4 weeks when I get it back from the repairer!

Faulty throttle - would not turn off
Had to unscrew the throttle wire from its housing to stop the mower. This was the first time using it. Model: 486.
Those who say they've had this mower for 5-10 years, the manufacturing quality must have been better then!
Returned mine to bunnings and got a full refund.

xts 60 almost unbreakable
I have had this mower/engine for just over ten years.
Stopped cleaning it just used it.
In all that time, I never did an oil change, and never changed the air filter, and never serviced. Not as easy start as the new Briggs.
just starting to smoke on startup, when it is warm no smoke.
pretty rock solid engine combined with cast mower body.
Just replaced it with a new self propelled model latest briggs engine, no primer bulb and auto choke. first pull start is impressive.
pity they dont make car engines this forgiving.
it probably would smoke if I had regularly serviced it.
Not many engines would take this kind of punishment. :)

pile of junk
I have owned this mower for 2.5 years. During this time it has been returned to repair shop 5 times to repair switch on throttle control - either I can't start it, or it won't turn off. This repair takes about 30 seconds and I have been charged up to $50. I am further informed there is no point replacing switch as new ones are just the same - looks like I am stuck with this for life of mower. Further, during this time, the muffler guard has fallen off, and the pull start mechanism is about to break. All in all, this is the worst mower I have ev...Read more

TRAUMATIC experience! Not very good.
Second time I used this mower it didn't turn off. I called Masport where the bloke who answered the phone couldn't tell me how to turn it off. Then I was put on hold to talk to the technician. All along I had the high revving mower under my house with small children around. Finally the technician gets on the phone and gets me to flood the engine. Still wouldn't turn off. Then I needed to pull some leaver on the engine - still wouldn't turn off. Then had to get a non-conducting pole or similar to flick the cover off the spark plug.
Then ha...Read more

Why didn't you turn the fuel off? No fuel, no go.
No fuel tap on those, mate. I wouldn't be too concerned about the review - surprisingly enough someone who had no idea how to operate the machine ran into trouble and managed to slag off anyone who attempted to help them!
I have had this mower for 13 years without a problem and I mow twice a week.

Almost Unbreakable the B&S XTS60 engine rocks!
I've had this mower for over 7 years, never had a breakdown, I use it 5days p/week for the past 2 years and the engine is still going strong, the chassis is cast aluminium so it will never rust. The built in chipper makes easy work of cleaning up small branches and hedge clippings, shredding up to 35mm diameter sticks etc with ease. The grass catcher is a bit small but overall easy to empty and practically unbreakable. Better than the cloth bag catcher on the Honda HRU216 especially if some seriously nasty lawns like I sometimes do. This mower ...Read more
is relatively light at 35kg approx so it is easy to carry up stairs over retaining walls on split level block lawn. It does struggle a bit with wet overgrown grass but so does the much more expensive Honda. It has done things a lawn mower should never do like cut hidden rocks and brick pieces in half amongst overgrown grass. The motor ALWAYS starts 1ST time even when cold and engine oil black and old. If this machine ever falls apart I will be getting another Masport again. Mulches well on not really overgrown grass. Supreme fuel efficiency 1 tank for 3.5hrs constant mowing. Light and very manouvrable, Starts first time everytime, has a chipper built in, Aluminium chassis will not rust Grass catcher can fill very quickly, wheels too small to use on thick buffalo grass, not self propelled so gets heavy to push uphill over thick grass.Similar opinion? Excellent
Highly recommended. I love the mulching capability. Only ever used the catcher once. Chassis is good, no rust at all even though I have used it in wet conditions and tend not to clean it afterwards.
Very good, smooth and willing engine and mower. Has served me more than 8 years without a single problem at all.
2 blades rather than 4 blades but they are very strong.

ut no rust still thanks to the aluminium chasis. A friend of mind broke the pull start and I flooded the carb a couple of times flipping it on its side. Still doesn't fault the mower. Had the air filter and spark plug replaced today along with new bolt for the blade, I am sharpening the blade each time now. Works like a dream. The only wear I can see is in the wheels, which are somewhat worn and not as smooth as before. Just replaced the much newer whipped snipper today. So what can I say, really happy with it after 14+ years of use.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Nearly 12 months on and this mower has practically died in the a$$. Yesterday, trying to mow the lawn and it would hardly go above idle speed. I am going to have to take it back for repair or replacement. Not happy, Jan >:(
