What year did Mazda 2 start using soy based coating on wires?

This was an interesting question as I was not aware of it. I have tried to contact the dealer who sold me the car who had no idea about it, and asked me to contact Mazda directly. I have sent Mazda an email on 1st Jan 2022, and is still waiting to hear back from them. I will update this once I get a reply.

Thank you! I also emailed Mazda and the reply was a "best guess" as the person did not work in the actual parts department, but to his knowledge Mazda uses only plastic not soy coatings on wires. I did ask a follow up to let me know if he got more accurate information. Funny thing was that person at Mazda had purchased a Honda that had soy and it cost him $2200 bucks in repairs from rodent damage. My mom's Honda..over $1200. To me this soy issue is as big as the takata airbag issue and it is industry wide. So far, the auto manufacturers have avoided taking responsibility inspite of numerous class action suits.

Yes, Agree. This could be the tip of the ice-berg.
In 2016, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Toyota claiming the company should cover this type of damage after a customer was forced to pay around $1,500 to fix the chewed wiring under warranty.

I also own a Mazda 2 2007. MAXX nothing but troubles, rattles rough idle at lights too.
Paid for 3 bloody engine mounts, sensor, air filter, had to dealer so sick of it now. Seems to be on a real low ratio when starting up to 40 after that it's ok in higher gears. Auto. Had engine cleans, starting to think it is a lemon.
Very disappointed.......any suggestions?

For those who are having fuel economy issues, im from NZ so we only have years no maxx sport or genki variants. So is there a certain year that has issues..1.5 or 1.3 cvt or auto?
After a wee car like this but it will do a 200km round trip to our closest city 1 x a week, then of course small trips around our small town.
Fuel prices are going up..want economy without having to go to a hybrid. Looking at 2nd hand mazda 2 or demio 2009-2011
So any recommendation/advise would be appreciated

Hi Peter,

More info would be helpful.

I'll assume it is an 4spd auto 2.0L? If so you should be able to achieve around 9-11L city driving.

I have a 2009 Mazda 2 for sale with only 48,000 klms on the clock. I'd buy that!!

Timing chain only gets replaced if it about to brake or brakes. It not like a timing belt needs replacing every 120.000km

Hi, our 2010 Manual Mazda 2 Neo suffered a total engine shutdown at highway speed last night. Tacho and Speedo both dropped to zero. Pulled over and was able to re-start without any problem. Car has just passed 30,000km and has been serviced at logbook intervals. An ideas?

Similar to my situation. But my current mazda 2 maxx 2016 has also been stalling or losing power at low engine idle such as parking uphill or reversing from an uphill position the car engine would just stall and vibrate as if the engine is struggling. My odo is only 3,000kms. Ive driven suzuki swift new, toyota echo new, toyota yaris new, mazda 3 new, mazda cx5 new and none of them has this low engine idle stalling.

Back to your question it could be the engine computer. since cars these days have computers monitoring how you drive your car and it anticipated your driving habits. Maybe a computer restart or software update?,Or your car engine has bad engine oil or no engine oil?, your oil filter is dirty is another one, low battery?? If worse comes your engine cylinders are not pumping same time which can cause thr car to stall and shutdown.
I wish i could help you, but im in the same boat. Hope it works out.

Saw a 2012 mazda2 for $5400. Looking at it for my son in college. What worries me is it has 98000 miles. How do you put that many miles in 3.5 years. Opinions please

98000 divided by 3.5 is 28000 miles per year. It's probably divided by 4. That's really high but with adequate servicing these cars last a fairly long time. Long commute probably and it all ads up...

Andrew V

Is it miles or kilometres? Miles are 1.6 times bigger than kilometres so 98,000 miles would be a worry. 98,000 kilometres on the other hand would not be all that bad. It averages out to 28,000 kilometres per year, which although a bit high, is still realistic. My wife and I have a car each and we do 20,000kms per year in each car. If we only had one car, we would probably do 30,000 to 35,000 per year. I think the main concern would be that it has been serviced regularly every 10,000kms and it's been kept up to scratch.

I'm considering a 2011 Mazda 2 Neo in manual for my first car, but am tossing up between that and the 2011 Holden Barina Spark CDX, also in manual. I was wondering if anyone has had experiences with either of these cars and could possibly shed some light on. What model would be better for me? Thanks :)
