Really is a great pump
I was a bit sceptical reading these reviews, thought they were too good to be true. I have to say this manual one is actually more effective than my electric one! It has been designed well and very compact too. Well done Medela, excellent product for a good price at chemist warehouse :).

Do not buy
I have used the medela Swing electric pump with great results, being able to pump about 350ml. This manual pump however is useless. I got very little suction, and after pumping for a long time only got a few drops. I get more by hand.
When I tried to return it, they refused saying there is nothing wrong with it. Now I have a pump I can't use, and wasted money that I could have spent on my son. Incredibly disappointed.

Better then my electric pump
I purchased this after hubs started complaining about the noise from my Closer too Nature electric pump and what a worthwhile purchase! I found I got triple the amount of milk in a fraction of the time and it is much easier to clean, wish I had gotten this in the first place!

It does the job!
Great little device.. had tried an avent manual pump and let me tell you the suction difference is amazing.. so much less effort with the medela harmony and so much more milk expressed. Suction is fantastic.
The only negative is that the instruction manual tells you to sterilised the rubber that attaches to the handle.. but this makes it soft and causes it to lose suction. Spoke to a medela support staff and they recommended not to sterilise just to wash with soapy water. They were very helpful and efficient in replacing the much needed part! Thanks for a designing a great pump and for such great service.

essential
Simple to use, great product. Chemist Warehouse is selling this for $70. If you're thinking about expressing for whatever reason, just do it. This will literally save you a heap of time and heartache, while still giving your baby the best nutrition and maintain feeding only with breast milk. Feed on the breast as well, for best benefits. Washable breast pads are good too.

This is an excellent pump.
Love this pump wish I had of bought one right from the beginning.
Works so much faster and better than the electric pump that I have which is a different brand. And nice and quiet and compact so I can take it when we go away places. Took about a week to get the hang of using it with one hand.
Would probably purchase the electric Medela if I was needing to pump regularly but for occasional pumping (once every day or two) this is perfect.
Really quick and easy to clean.
Medela customer service was exceptionally helpful when a part was broken in the packaging.

Works well but it leaks while being used
When all the seals are assembled properly, it creates a good vaccuum that expresses well. We've been using ours for 3 months now and it still creates a good suction. You don't have to pump frantically, but just squeeze the handle and hold for a few seconds, and the suction will drain a good volume of milk. It does take a little practice to just use one hand, and it is time consuming to do one side, switch to the other, then sometimes do both again to ensure that both breasts have been drained sufficiently.
However what annoys us most is that...Read more
the pump leaks. Held on a slight angle, milk leaks from where the pump assembly screws to the bottle. We haven't been able to work out why, everything is fitted firmly and this happens even when there is barely any milk in the bottle. But it means that expressing occassionally ends up as a messy affair. The Medela support line was not able to help with this at all. The other thing that was annoying is that if you happen to rotate the pump handle while using it, it can affect the seal of the vaccuum diaphram meaning that you lose suction and have to disassemble and realign the diaghram before you can resume. This can happen quite easily so you have to be sure to not twist the handle while pumping. As others have said, its easy to clean and an economic option for an effective breast pump, but the leaking and the temperamental seal mean that I wouldn't recommend it.Similar opinion? Perfect for occasional use.
I am someone who just expresses a little to have a feed or two backup in the freezer and this hand pump is perfect. I have used it occasionally to express a whole feed, but more often express a little after feeds in order to build up a supply or to express for comfort when baby sleeps longer than usual.
I find it really easy to use, and as long as I can get a let down, it is very efficient and I can get lots of milk. I do find that I sit hunched forward using it, and you do need both hands.
It's easy to clean, and we sterilise it daily wh...Read more
en being used by boiling in hot water. I have the hard plastic breast shield which doesn't have the yellowing problems others have talked about. Sometimes it can be a little difficult to get suction, but I have found that making sure the silicone bit in the handle is on properly helps with that. It's pretty much fool proof, there is nothing mechanical to fail or break, it never runs out of batteries and I can put it in my handbag easily if I'm going to miss a feed and need to express. I think if I were trying to express a lot regularly, though, I would prefer an electric pump. Like others have said, shop around for the best price! comfortable, cheap, reliable, easy to use, easy to clean need two hands, hard to sit comfortablySimilar opinion? Better than a machine - seriously! :D
I love this product - but let me tell you WHY I love this product, and why it's value for money. I had an emergency Cesarean, so had some issues getting my milk to come in. Additionally, I have one inverted nipple and one slightly flat nipple - so attachment is something me and bubs are working on. Using a pump was not only important for supply, it was also necessary for feeding.
So I hired a mechanic pump thinking this would make things easier - I was using the Medela Lactina Select. It worked ok, but I was sitting there, leaning forward, e...Read more
xpressing milk for 45 minutes to an hour. My back hurt, I got cold and progress was slow. Then my husband suggested I try our Medela Harmony - which I had bought so I could express on the run later in our baby's life. WOW! The flow was AMAZING! I went from producing 20 mls on the mechanic pump to close to 50 mls immediately, and am now up to 100mls (day two of using it). The Medela Harmony gives YOU control of the pumping and allows you to bring on your flow and express till the breast is empty. This purchase, along with the Belly Bean cushion for sleeping and the Medela Calma teat, are by far and away the best purchases of my pregnancy. Great product, you'd be nuts to use anything else! Really easy to use, helps increase milk supply, reduces time spent on lactation, doesn't hurt, great suction.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Medela Harmony is great if you're out and about - Even when you have the electrice Medela pump at ho
I use the Medela electric swing pump at home, and I think it's great that I can use the Harmony when I'm out and about. The bottles and bits are interchangeable, and apart from the manual action, It seems to be just as effective for me as the Medela Swing.
Small, quiet, portable - parts are interchangable with the electric version

Great pump
Great brand, great pump. Easy to use, effective pump. Easy to put together and use and parts fit well inside steriliser. Brand used in hospitals. If you planned on pumping daily you'd want an electric pump. Great to use occasionally. Shop around the cost varies alot and I found it cheaper o line.
Easy to use and clean
Cost high - shop around as I found it much cheaper online than in shops

Great pump
Love this pump, it is comfortable to use and very easy to use. Not many pieces to put together and I really like the two phase expression. It's nice and compact and easy to clean. Expensive for what it is but it has done the job for me. I did need to buy some new membranes after a while but they were fairly cheap

Excellent
I initially bought the Medela Swing (electric) as I am expressing for extra feeds and a stockpile in the freezer, then bought this so I could express from both breasts at the same time (couldn't afford two electrics!). Turns out it was a great purchase, not the 'inferior option' I had expected. I found it expressed at the same rate as the electric, although it's true that it does seem to work better on fuller breasts, particularly if working one-handed. The longer handle was very comfortable to use, my hand didn't really get tired either as ...Read more
I could control the speed (the milk kept coming by holding the handle for a second or two longer, so less 'pumping' required). I didn't really need the 2-phase shorter handle either, the long one worked from the start of each session. It's very easy to assemble and clean, has pretty good suction (it worked perfectly well for me) and out of the five I've tried this is by far the most comfortable pump to use. I think good value for money, particularly when almost a third of the cost of the electric Swing and works almost as well. The one thing I'll say is the Swing is better for fully draining the breast as it doesn't matter how full or empty they are, plus no effort required. But I love this breast pump for the price and the ability to take with you if you need to express on-the-go. I would highly recommend. Easy to clean and assemble, comfortable to use, good suction, ergonomic handle reduces hand tiredness When breasts aren't as full it tends to lose a bit of suction, so find have to hold the breast shield with one hand and pump with the other (no good if I'm trying to multi-task and breastfeed my little one at the same time)Similar opinion? Excellent
I went through 3 different breast pumps when I had my children, a Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature, a Medella electric, and this one. This was my favourite as I didn't have to express all the time and it was quiet. The Tommee Tippee one fell apart and didn't work very well, the electric one was way too noisy, but this one was fine. Not fiddly, easy to wash, I'll be sticking to this one if we have another baby.
Easy to use, nice bottles (BPA Free)
Not really anything, maybe just that I found the "two phase" handle unnecessary, I only used it with the longer handle.

Great price and great for a casual use pump!
I bought the medela harmony manual pump for casual ocassions - outings and times I knew I wouldn't be able to breast feed. It has been perfect! Once you get the hang of using it it works well. Medela is a trusted brand in breast feeding and was recommended to me by shop staff and lactation nurses. There is no need to purchase expensive electric pumps when you only want to pump on a few occasion, this does a great job.
Inexpensive, reliable, doesn't hurt, easy to use!
As I said, manual pumps should be used occasionally only, you wouldn't want to be squeezing and pumping with your hands for all your feeds! Could get tiring :)

OK
This is a very convenient manual pump, which is extremely easy to assemble/dissemble and clean. The '2-phase' expression is a clever concept (to mimic the baby's changing sucking rhythms) however does not work too effectively. I have found that this pump does not work well if being used part time (in addition to regular feeds, or to boost milk supply) as it only works well/at all on very 'full' breasts. A stronger suction would be more helpful. The pump action is quite effortful and would not suit anyone who wished to use this unit more than occasionally.
Easy to assemble, easy to clean
No strong pump action

Great for occasional use
Bought this pump after i used a tommee tippee electric pump once (which hurt!)
Have been using to 4 months now
Only express when have to go out, so for 1-2 times a week this is great.
Comfortable, quiet and nice bottles - bubs took to them easily
Easy to assemble, easy to clean (I use the medela quick steam bags - great!)
Inexpensive, easy to assemble, quiet operation

Excellent for occasional pumping
I bought this pump initially as I wasn't sure whether I would want to express milk very often. I'm very happy with this pump as an occasional use thing (once a day, for 30-40mls) but am upgrading to an electric Medela Swing, as even though this pump is very good, like all manual pumps, it's not really designed for expressing multiple feeds each day. It's perfect for expressing small amounts daily to build up a bit of a stockpile of frozen feeds or even for expressing one whole feed per day, but any more than that becomes too laborious. Overall,...Read more
a great hand pump. Easy to clean, disassembly very simple (very few parts), replacement parts are pretty cheap and easy to get, fast expression once you get the hang of it (I can express about 100mls in 10mins). Don't boil the silicone breast piece (doesn't really make that clear in the instructions), a bit of leakage from the breast shield can occur (esp. when you're first learning to use it).Similar opinion? Love this breast pump. We used this one at home before I went back to work (then I bought an electric). It's efficient-more efficient I found than the electric-and doesn't take too long.
Ease of use, ease of cleaning, compact, very strong.

I used this for pumping for my breastfeeding one year old when I started working 2 days a week. It did the job very well. I do agree with what others have said that it worked much better when you're all ready very full. But I quickly learned what times of days worked best and it wasn't a problem.
fairly easy to clean and to use. Works very well for someone who only wants to pump occasionally.
Well, it likely wouldn't be suitable for someone who was pumping multiple times on a daily basis but I think that is the nature of manual pumps as a whole.
