I've got a Swing Double Pump and I've rented a Symphony. With Symphony, milk will come out but it won't with Swing. What can I do to make milk come out with Swing?

Hi there, I have a double swing electric. I have started using it a week ago. I was using a hospital grade pump before this for 5 weeks. It was easy and quick taking no more than 20-30mins for both sides from a full breast to empty.
Since using my medela I am pumping for an hour. I don’t get any milk coming out for at least 20mins. I am massaging and assisting milk to come out but the pump is just not getting anything out in any timely fashion. It’s very frustrating.
Is this normal as my breasts are full or is there a fault with my pump???????

Hi Rea, it sounds like there may be a fault with your pump if you’re pumping for that long without much milk being expressed. (Keep in mind that if you’re still in early days of breastfeeding Bub, you may not be expressing a lot anyway, but every little bit helps Bubs and encourages greater milk flow.) You may have already tried this... it’s imperative to have a good suction so try wriggling the suction cup around to expel the air first. Once the air is expelled, keep the Medela firmly in place. If you think it may be a lactation issue, perhaps use a heat pack on your breast (they have special hot/cold ones specifically for breastfeeding). Finally, I’ve personally found that using mains to power the swing is more reliable than batteries. If none of these help, I’d recommend getting an exchange. Do persevere, it’s worth it. Good luck!

Thank you for your email. An hour does seem an excessive length of time to be double pumping. Please return your Swing Maxi to the place of purchase. If they have a testing kit they will be able to ascertain if the problem is with the actual motor of the pump or the connectors.

Hi, my Medela swing was working fine until recently. It works good when plugged in but keeps cutting out when using batteries. I have tried changing the batteries and there is no water in the system. Not sure how to fix it??

Yeah I usually keep mine plugged in. I think you need really good batterys. Maybe shoot medela an email, ask if they have any advise.

Thank you for your email. Medela recommends using high-quality alkaline batteries. From a good set of batteries, you will get 2-3 pumping sessions.
We would recommend using the Swing plugged in if you possibly can and use the batteries occasionally or when travelling etc.

You will need to check the voltage on your pump. If your pump is a dual voltage (110-220 volts), you will just need a travel adaptor.

Currently I have medela swing single pump and would like to extend it to a double pump. Can I simply buy tubing for that goal (one imput, two outputs) and connect it to my swing pump or it would not work ? Would the power be sufficient? Can you suggest me any of your product pumps for double breast pumping in case my proposed solution would not work, so I can decide on alternative solution.

Our double pumps are designed to double pump, therefore have a much stronger motor. A swing single cannot be adapted for use as a double pump. Medela has two types of double pumps, the Swing Maxi and Freestyle.

I have just tried the swing single pump for the first time and only about 2 drops came out but i must have a good supply as my 4 week old put on 520g in the last 2 weeks. Could it be because my nipples measure about 17mm so i need a smaller nipple shield? I had no pain or discomfort and tried on each side for a couple of minutes.

I currently am using an electric pump but the suction is really bad. Sometimes it does not pump any milk at all even when my breasts are full. I have read some good reviews about this product however not much has been said about its suction which is my main concern as I do pump frequently. Can people who have tried this product share their experiences about its suction?

Mines the same. I bought double electric breast puml and all it could pump out was not even 1mls in 15 mins even when my breasts were engorged. I paid around 270$ for them. Very dissappointed.
I had this issue right at the start when I didn’t know how to position well and was disappointed also, but after some tweaking and moving around the position, it worked really well!

Will medela swing motor work with symphony pump attachments? Am needing a double pump but can't afford to buy the whole lot so have been looking at individual prices. And found an option but unsure if I will damage the motor by trying to get it to pump both breats..

Thank you for your email. You can use all parts of the Symphony Kit except the tubing and cap and membrane (that fits on the Symphony pump).
You cannot use the tubing as it is too long and may affect suction.
The Medela Swing is only designed to be used for single pumping. The Swing Maxi is a double pump and has a much stronger motor.

I wouldn't think so. As long as it genuinely hasn't been used and kept in its packaging I wouldn't worry about the age.
the risk is that there is no warranty so you should try to get it as cheaply as possible.

If your Swing pump is "brand new" and stored in a place that doesn't get too hot it should be fine. The only thing you may need to check is the small white silicone membrane to make sure it is in good condition as this regulates the suction.

The Swing and Symphony are designed for different purposes.
The Swing is a Personal Use pump a Single electric pump, designed for occasional use. It is small and compact and great for mothers on the go that may be away from their babies for a short period of time. The Swing is easy and intuitive to use, clean and easy to assemble. It can be used on mains or battery power.
The Symphony pump is a “Multi User” pump, designed to be used in Hospitals or for Home Rental. The Symphony is a double pump (simultaneously pump from both breasts) and contains two programs (you will normally be guided by your Health Care Professional as to which program to use).
• Initiate Program (activates milk production)
• Build & Maintain Program (builds and maintains milk production)
The Initiate program is used by Mothers who are having difficulty and cannot breastfeed or who have had a baby that is preterm.
The Build & Maintain program is used by Mothers to build and maintain their supply. This program may also be used by mothers who are exclusively expressing.

Mine has worked perfectly for the last 10.5months up until today when it just kept sucking my nipple further into the shield. It was very painful. I only recently replaced the valve cover and have checked all the parts. Has anyone else had this problem?

Please let me know if you are using batteries with the swing breastpump. If the batteries are running low on charge this can cause the unit to not complete the cycle. Can you call our customer care line on 1800 787 345 if you are not using batteries?

When no or very little milk comes out you know it is the time to stop. In terms of how much, it is really different from one to another. I will feel a good achievement if there is 100ml.

Every person is different in how much milk they can express, there is no set amount as all mums make different volumes at different times of the day. In regards to how long you should express we would advise that you pump for 2 minutes after the milk flow slows down or stops completely. For many mums this will be around 15 minutes maximum on each breast when pumping with a single pump.

I have a single swing electric breastpump but it won't suction anymore. I have checked the parts, no cracks. I have replaced the membrane, still it won't suction. But when I pressed the filter membrane to cover the holes of the valve, it works and will do the suction. What is the deffect of my swing breastpump,is it the valve? Do I need to replace the yellow valve?

Probably. I had this happen a while go and had to replace the membrane and valve even though I could not see anything wrong with them. It fixed it.
Sometimes no answer for the problem. When it stops working, it stops. Can't explain. Like my Medela swing... rubbish! My advice is you should ask for a replacement of a new breast pump. Prepare everything to argue with the seller/store because they usually deny to replace or delay replacement. Or they like to transfer their responsibility to you for you to deal with the manufacturer.

I have a question I am a new mom that has no experience with breastfeading..I have a 2 month baby and I have too much milk that my baby it's still not able to take it all and some people recommend me to take electric pump to eliminate the part of milk that baby couldn't take...because that nilk causes me problem with my breast..on the other hand some people recommend me not to take the pump because that increases the production of the milk and my problem in fact is hiper production..please can you suggesst me what to do if you have experience with this situation?

If you express more milk than you need each day then you're telling your body you need more and please make more. If oversupply is an issue then the last thing you want to do is encourage more milk production. My advice would be either don't express and hope your body adjusts to making the amount you need each day (and not more) or express a little each day and freeze it. That can help with growth spurts or times when you may want a bottle handy. It lasts around 3 months in the freezer.

Whenever I use the pump, it caused my nipple pain. Is it the breastshield is too big/small for me?

I am no lactation consultant or expert, so it's impossible for me to be able to accurately answer this question. For me personally I did not experience any pain so long as the nipple is in the middle of the shield as per the instructions that comes with the device. For some women they experience pain during the let down of their milk supply. It might be a matter of experimenting with the settings and position of your nipple to see if it makes a difference to the pain you are currently experiencing. If you continue to experience discomfort I would be minded to contact the Australian Breastfeeding Association for some professional advice/assistance.
