Few issues after 208,000km
2005 W639 Viano Trend Diesel, 8 seater. Bought new. Comfortable long distance travel for 8 genuine adults plus some luggage. Tows well, though turbo lag at low revs is noticeable. Have had both front window winders fail, poor design of plastic bits, did a home grown repair the second time. Fuel leak at fuel filter, replaced filter and O rings, suspect the previous filter change did not include the o rings. Slow leak in aircon, needs top up every couple of years, started when under warranty but unable to find the leak.

ins wore in 3 years, replaced them myself. Tires last well once I empirically added a small amount of toe out from factory specs. Long service intervals good, Rear wiper parking erratic, poor design of electrics, a water hose goes through the housing with the contacts, any small seepage results in contact corrosion. The factory rear shocks are too soft. Like the package size, will fit in most car parks and turning circle is good. Electronic differential control is not a patch on a real mechanical LSD. NVH is reasonable, recently drove a 2015 W447 Valente and it is considerably quieter. Ability to move seats in small increments great, particularly like seat belts built into seats.can remove them totally and get a good low floor van, but hard work single handed. Unable to get a decent workshop manual. Dealer servicing was expensive but no real problems. Once out of warranty have done service work myself except auto transmission and aircon services. Disappointed replacement W447 is not available as a 4wd in RHD nor are there any engine options on the Valente which is already pretty expensive, and going to a new V class is heading towards $100k! Can't find a suitable replacement, must carry 8 adults and luggage, tow 2000Kg or more, would really like it to be under 1900mm tall, diesel and would like 4wd, so I intend to keep it for now. Not sorry I bought it. Update July 2022, in the last 4 years have repaired the following: 1 failed glow plug, not that important in Australia but replaced anyway.Purchased in September 2021.

Worst vehicle I've ever owned!
I've owned 8 vehicles, mostly new like the Vito, or demonstrators and the Vito has had more issues than the other 7 vehicles combined! Appalling quality, and the Benz owned Melbourne Australia dealership can't even fix some of the faults after 4 years! Buy any other van, rather than a Vito. I can't wait to offload this one in a few months time and I'll never touch another Benz.

Good car, really LOVE it
I only had 2 problems with my 2004 115 2.2 cdi and never one major problem. Its parts was real cheap if you take what you get out of the car. But i won't buy it new, the car's value will fall with about half in the first year so its much cheaper to buy secondhand. On its feul economy i would recomment it, much better than any in its class. Have done more than 982098 km on mine but probebly need a new one now an will buy mb vito again!!! It is very relaible and never left me standing in the middle of nowhere.
Once broke a universal joint(my own fold, driven up a bad mountain road) Once broke a door handle and struggeld for 2 weeks because I couldn't get one, at least found one on a scrapyard.

Worst. Van. Ever.
If you feel like your life is too problem-free and that you have excess money to burn, then you should own the Vito. My experience with this van has been horrific. From the first day it has given me nothing but problems. Poor body work, engine problems, components breaking off and not working, warning lights constantly coming on for no reason. Mechanics don't even want to look at it! The van no longer recognizes my key and needs new computer system, along with front-end suspension work and a new hydraulics compressor (€2,700). Now I own this titanic garbage bin and have to *pay* to get rid of it at a total loss. I will never own another MB vehicle!

Terrible van
Numerous quality issues, both power windows went, had to replace window regulators, Would no longer recognise the key - needed a new EIS $1500, Clutch jammed needed new clutch and flywheel - $2000. Parts are horrendously expensive regular service base is $700 but usually ends up being $1000. Now the diff is making bad noises.

Excellent Vito
I bought my my 2011 SWB Vito new love it. It gets excellent fuel economy between 7.3-7.8 L/100km and needs very little maintainence, Carries everything I need for my painting business. I have done approx 70,000km in the past 17 months and will buyanother one when the trade in price matches the payout figure. I had a hilux run up the back of my van and got a rental van, iLoad. I am so glad I spent the extra $5000 and bought a Merc. iLoad has worst suspension ever and guzzled fuel, 14L/100km

Updated review.
OK, I need to clarify something. I have been misinformed. The gearbox wasn't the problem. It was the engine. My apologies to the gearbox but I'm still not happy with the build quality of this vehicle. I actually told the service people that I was unhappy about how the engine and the gearbox were working together as a unit. I didn't single out the gearbox but apparently they spent a lot of time searching in the gearbox for the fault. The bill for the service was $4000 but this wasn't just the gearbox. There. I was ju...Read more
st blase about a $4000 service bill. They replaced the front brake rotors which is at least $1000 and this van just CHEWS them up because they are of soft metal for best braking performance. Yes, they are good brakes but at a cost. Anyway the motor burns oil at low Km's and degrades the oil to such an extent that the motor really loses performance within the service intervals and even though the engine is supposed to have clever technology that adjusts the service intervals as required it still doesn't pick up the need for fresh engine oil. Can you tell that I'm still not happy. Many other minor quality issues that you don't expect after forking out such money. My advice hasn't changed. Look elsewhere. Performance. Poor build quality.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I would never buy another Mercedes product. For a company that has been making vehicles for so long, they have goofed this one.
The best looking van on the market. I bought a crewcab 115 diesel new in 2004.
Noisy - very little attention given to noise suppression, considering vans are on the road more than cars. Poor build quality, poor panel fit. Lots of squeaks and rattles. Crewcab seat very heavy and awkward to remove and replace. Broke down three times in 2 years and needed towing. Indifference from Mercedes head office. Clunky gearbox. Not easy to open or close sliding doors.

Shocker
i bought this van about 5 years ago with about 70 000km on the clock( not bad at all) Thought that i was buying a good van but soon realised how wrong i was. Since then here are some of the things that have gone wrong with the van.
Drivers electric window doesn't work any more.
immobiliser had to be disarmed because it was preventing the van from starting at times.
electronics in dashboard stopped working. By this i mean, i would be going 180km\h ( according to the speedo ) without leaving my driveway. The revs would be redlining even when...Read more

Mercedes Vito
Could of been a great van with car quailities but let down by very poor Mercedes Service and poor built quality (Made is Spain). Metallic paint starts to biodegrade after 3 years ($2000 option) and try get that repaired through MB.
Rust on roof where sunroof location is situated.
Second gear in manual gearbox never finds its spot. MB have never been able to fix this.
Everytime the Vito got serviced at MB is came out always damaged. Large scratches on bonnet etc. Damage repaired by MB but no apology. Two damage repairs were so bad, I came to the conclussion that they must employ 5 year olds.
Sitting position and comfortable over large distances travelled
The most dishonnest service staff I have ever come across.

Rather have a Toyota
Have had vehicle since new, had new shocks all round, had both windows repaired apparently its the plastic slider that goes, its gone again so have decided to make my own slider a bit more robust have just spent $7000 having auto gearbox rebuilt, apparently the sprag clutch in the box slips allowing the clutch plate roots to wear away the central hub and fill the box with aluminium dust. Have replace the sway bar rubbers with poly ones, the transmission cooler was holed by a stone(unfortunate) but replacement cooler was costed at $1000 so replaced it with an after market one for $100. Thats why I want a Toyota.
Great engine, very economical and powerful for a 2.2 turbo diesel, comfortable to travel in
Expensive to maintain

I have had an early series 2 and a later series 2. Early one had problems with scrubbing the front left tyre. This, I believe was due to a "tight" diff but that is my opinion. They have solved the problem. I did 250000km in my first and only issue was a wire chaffed thru and near the ned the air cond comp broke. Great highway van. Zero low down touque in diesel.Goof economy. Very safe. Drivers ergonomics a bit to be desired. Seats too hard. The latter one had a more powerfull air cond. Early one struggled.Longer periods between services means l...Read more

Have also had a few front struts fail under warranty in our fleet.Auto is good. The series one auto tranni failures was due to insufficent fluid changing. No rattles. No problems with this one at 70000km. Factory fitted barrier is good.3 seater is good but very cramped legwise for centre person. Like the auto shift lever.Tows okay but low torque below 1800 rpm. Handels well in the mountains.Cruise control very easy and convenient.Maintains 1km plus or minus. Traction control works well Safe. Great highway van.Quiet.Lamp failure indicator.Good turning circle.Good economy from diesel.Easy to fill at bowser...can use hiflow pump. Little very low down torque. Really bad van! Mercedes should be embarrassed and should have, a long time ago recalled these vans and fixed their many known defects. I bought this van thinking that Merecedes had a good and proud reputation...I feel very stupid to have believed that.

In short if Toyota had this platform to make a van before Mercedes did it this would have taken the world Van Scene over like the I Phone did the phone market, Mercedes had a chance to make this an almost legendary Van and sadly fell way short of the mark with dodgy electronics, Very sub standard Service, secretive behavior with faults and and service pricing and Mercedes Tech's trying to re invent the wheel. whats wrong with a throttle cable, its worked on cars for nigh on 100 years now? Get the bloody computer out of the loop or use two, one ...Read more
for engine management and one for Systems management on either side of the dash board, not together, a van is not a Faraday Cage, Electromagnetic interference causes weird stuff to happen. I drive mine daily and would buy another, next time a 5sp diesel. If you are a handy man like me you will get both the Joy of Driving a Merc and the Warm feeling of accomplishment every time you repair a fault at 1/4 the price Mercedes could or would not, If you want you vehicle to be a reliable work horse by all means buy one but sell it just before warranty runs out, If you have a fat wallet and no brains buy a second hand one with no warranty, your wallet wont be fat for long. Graeme Power My Year 2000 Vito SWB 5 speed petrol Van, Quite probably the best van I have ever driven, I have driven Vans professionally for about 25 years, its roomy, I feel safe as a driver, seat belt comes to hand quick and easy and is well positioned, seating position and seats good, speedometer well laid out, rear vision mirrors well positioned and generous in size, fuel consumption good, brakes are good and have excellent foot to road feel, load capacity excellent, overall appearance excellent. The Red paint faded quickly and now has a white film that buffing cant fix, Thank you Mercedes! The gear shift a little tricky and slow to engage, probably the linkage set up not being what it should, I had this looked at with no improvement, turning circle is not good and clipping gutters with the rims is common, do not change your 15 inch rims for 16's if you are a delivery drive or you will be replacing tyres often (at over $300.00 a case) after punching holes in the side walls when you clip gutters, the low profile 16inch tyres bulge just enough to become a pinch zone between the rim and the gutter and goodbye tyre every time you clip a curb, (stick with or get, 15 inch standard steel light truck rims & tyres) air conditioning not up to scratch, very poor even after a couple of re gasses, The petrol 5 speed I have is a bit down on power for towing but if your not in a hurry and don't mind engaging low gear often on trips you can do it and the cooling system is up to the job even for very heavy loads, CV joints don't last long and seem to average about 90k, don't go to Mercedes for any parts if you think you can diagnose your own problems, I buy cv's off the net for $165.00 and $70.00 a side to fit, my hearts skips a beat when I look at Mercedes charges on this simple job. I have had every electrical problem imaginable with this van and I fixed every one myself without Mercedes help. If a Mercedes technicians brains were dynamite the explosion wouldn't even lift his hat, MAF sensor (bought aftermarket from China $60.00, Crank angle sensor off the net $40.00, Throttle body repair (had to send it to England to have this done $340.00) Re Map computer $650.00, Replace Speedometer Cluster (twice) buy these New in England for about $700.00) dont even think of Mercedes for this one they wanted over $3500.00 fitted with limited warranty, apparently the speedo is famous for stuffing up. I firmly believe it should be illegal to make electronic speedometers that interface with a cars computer, They should be stand alone so you can maintain/repair/replace them separately, it is one of the most valuable instruments in your vehicle with speed cameras the way they are now days. I wanted to put LPG in the van but could not position a useful size tank anywhere on the exterior as the van is too low and could not afford to loose load space for a tank inside.Similar opinion?
