From my own experience, stick with it and things will stabilize. If your gut is accustomed to a low fiber diet, this will give you diarrhea until it adjusts. You should be fine in a few days. BUT...you should split the dose, maybe 1-2 teaspoons 3 times a day, like before each meal.

The Natural Granular Metamucil lists ingredients as "psyllium husk powder, sucrose". However, further down it says "Phenylketorurics: contains phenylalanine".
There is NO phenylalanine in sucrose (nor psyllium husk) so WHY does it say this? I rang their 1 800 number in Australia and received no help - but a comment was made regarding "secret ingredients"!

I really can't answer this question. All I can say is I take the Smooth Orange and it has changed my life around.
I have collagenous colitis,
I can only recommend that you give it a try.
Good Luck

Hi

With taking Metamucil, some websites say you shouldn't take it for more than a week, whilst others say there is no evidence that it is habit forming if taken daily (up to 3 times). Very confusing!. Any advice from someone with some knowledge in this field would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Is Metamucil okay to use long term? I have been using it daily (1.5tspns) for about 9 months, and now have a slight throat irritation and am concerned that it could be habit forming?

I used the 'natural granular' variant for years, because I didn't want to be taking fake sugars. On the side it still says that the ingredients are psyllium and sugar.
So why is the new packaging announcing that it is dangerous to phenylketonurics? If it doesn't have phenylketones in it, a fake sugar? I'm not taking it.

I rang the company in America, it was a free call. They must warn of phenylalanine if the whole facility uses it. So it doesn't have fake sugars in it, only psyllium and sugar. Which I would rather eat, if there is a choice.

You shouldn't take your medicine with your Metamucil, but a few hours apart should be fine. Consult with your doctor.

I've been taking Metamucil for years, is that bad?

I'm no doctor, but it shouldn't be. It's a natural plant based fiber so you're not causing the intestines to shut down like chemical laxatives dues to long term use. Just ask an anorexic what laxatives do. Where as metamucil is only a water absorber to provide bulk and smoothness....

I usually add it to my protein shakes which can be anytime of the day. But I usually only eat salads/veggies in the second half of the day so I would take it in the morning with my protein or small cup of juice. I'm not a doctor or pharmacist so I can't tell you how to take it.

Bingo! I have to have the same surgery after Christmas.

Anaesthetics will have the effect of mild constipation and apprehension about straining after the procedure will not help. Plenty of fluids and the usual morning dose of Metamucil - 1 1/2 teaspoons in my case - will help. Don't worry, it's normal and will clear itself. (I'm not medically qualified though!)

I think it depends on one's system: my wife gets bloated if she takes more than a level teaspoon. I find it's the cat's whiskers though! Probably take a tiny amount and see how it goes, then make a small increase?

thank you, i think that will be the case with me also, will reduce amount and see how that goes..:]
