Most underrated Australian car
If kept up with maintenance you cant get a better family car, big boot for the double pram. If serviced regularly they drive really nice and are very reliable, I'm definitely planning to keep mine for a long time, just fix what us needed and keep up to services and you'll have a good car for a long time.

Reliable work horse
Mine does 1000km per week and has now done 435,000km, in my travels on country roads to and from work. Averaging 8.1L per 100km it is remarkably fuel efficient for a car of its age. It is very comfortable to drive and due to regular servicing I have never had a mechanical issue. Still running very well, and I would recommend to anyone seeking a reliable work horse.

Never fashionable or cool, but one of the best Aussie built cars ever
With my simple 3.5 litre TJ Executive wagon nudging 300,000km, only now starting to use a bit of oil and never having had anything let go that wasn't an expected wear item, it has now surpassed what I've ever had out of an Aussie Ford (XF) or Holden (VL). It hasn't seen a garage a day in it's life and how it isn't rusting is a complete mystery (try that with a VL!). Even in '86 the Magna was better built than the VL or XF but with that horrifically bad 2.4 Astron II it deserved to get hounded by all. What the Adelaide crew did to arrive (pea...Read more
k IMO) in 2002 at the TJ was amazing. A superbly built car with an engine like a dynamo. Find one that has been well looked after and with less than 200k on the clock and you have a fine car that will be cheap to run, more power, bigger boot and lower fuel consumption than a typical SUV plus spare parts everywhere and sensible tyre sizes. Only hitch is how far the world has moved in safety terms; if you want safety, you can't look as far back as 2002. Sure, at the time it was up there; it stops quicker than a Falcon or Commodore or the same vintage (higher power to weight too, ahem), it has ABS, EBD and an Airbag or two but that doesn't cut it in 2017 and it no doubt dropped off the bottom of the ANCAP scale a while ago..if that's on the priority list for you. For now, I'm enjoying the last few years before inevitable retirement (of the car that it).Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

The undervalued car, Magna.
Magna is undervalued for some reason can't figure out why but probably people didn't like v6 with front wheel drive ?
Like typical Mitsubishi you can Service Magna at long intervals and it won't matter.
V6 with fuel economy close 4cylinder sedan but smoothness and comfort exceeds small sedans of course.
It's nice and silent when it's running and stays smooth and stable at speeds exceeding 100kmph too.
Mine is manual vrx and returns fuel economy of 7.8L/100km in highway driving and about 8.3L/100km in city driving.
I love it totally.

TJ VRX MAGNA I LOVE THIS CAR
From the moment I first jumped in this car I was in aww!!! I turned the ignition and the dash lights up red what a shock then turn the ignition again and the engine roars to life pull out of the driveway and take it for a test drive down the road oh!!! the power so smooth the way it holds you firmly into the seat with the sheer amount of torque and the sound of the engine resonating through the exhaust. These cars were so underrated Mitsubishi's biggest mistake were they were not advertising the amount of power and torque from the 3.5 litre powe...Read more
r plant and how it was delivered to such a beautifully refined transmission these cars were quicker than falcons and commodores of this era this includes their sport models and V8s I have had this car now for 7 years and I spare no expense at all on this car it still looks looks as beautiful as the day I got it drives like new it has 230000ks on the odometer I only use all the quality fluids for it I have never had an issue with the car it never uses oil.The transmission is still perfect after all these years shift is so smooth still pink oil every service. The interior is absolutely stunning still looks like showroom finish I could not recommend a more well built refined car that still is up with today's technology in performance believe me the amount of audi's and BMW's that try to get me to race off at the lights but I never do I baby it everywhere although I do get the compliment's on the way it looks this was by far one of Australia's best built car's I do believe they are the WOLF IN SHEEP"s CLOTHING this is coming from someone who was a dead set Ford fan that took this particular car for a test drive and was sold within about 30 seconds of driving it that's my opinion anyways.Similar opinion? TJ all the way!
I reckon the TJ is the best looking, the last 2 models frontal treatment, was a matter of what were they thinking?!
When they came out in 2000, I was seriously considering buying the VR/X model, I was driving a TP at the time,
(am still driving a TP -not the same one though) anyway, recently I bought a 2000 TJ Executive, in awesome condition, for $300. The performance is better than my 300SE Mercedes (which cost considerably more)

Super reliable 2001 Solara
Purchased brand new for $32k including tow bar.
Very powerful car. Easily pulls our 12ft Jayco Eagle. Put on gas in 2008 when the govt. had all those rebates available. Conversion ended up only costing $270!
Gets about 480 kms on a tank of gas, about 400 kms if towing on on highway.
650 kms on petrol, under 600 kms if towing.
Gone through a few batteries over the years and had a small oil leak that was easily fixed.

Great car
I've had my TJ magna for over a year now, i got it with about 138'000ks in July 2014, up to date its now clocked over 165'000ks. Really responsive and quick when you need to overtake, i have the 5spd manual, and i can get up a steep hill with 5 people in 5th gear quite comfortably! it's not a hard manual to drive, its fairly easy and the way the gears are set up is quite nice in the magna. I have the executive model, but it has a few added features like power windows and a rear spoiler which makes the car real sporty looking. I regularly clean...Read more
my car so i have no paint fade or any clear coat peeling like a majority of magnas i see. If you care for your car then it will look good! so far I've had no major issues, i did have to replace the heater core which was a task and a half, my father was able to do it for me because all the mechanics were charging and arm and a leg because of the effort it is to change it! and I do need to look at replacing the rear muffler as it has some rust and sounds shocking (common problem in magnas) I try to put premium fuel in my car and never let it get to the red light. It can be a bit heavy on the juice, but I have a heavy foot so that's probably the reason why, I normally average about 11lt per 100, although long trips are brilliant! It's reasonable comfy but ford has more head room, being a bigger bloke i find it difficult to sit in the back seat of the magnas as I don't have any space above my head! ill probably keep the car for another year or 2 as its got reasonably low k's and is running really good!Similar opinion? My Dream car became a reality!
I purchased my vr-x brand new in 2000. After seeing a photo of the prototype I was in love.
At the moment my beast has 318000 kms on the clock and apart from a pesky oil leak that no one seems to be able to fix. She is still as quick off the mark as she was new. I get 8.5 kms per litre around town. And I really "drive" my car.
I love this car and haven't seen anything comparable to her. If I had the money I would rebuild her from the tyres up.
Between my husband and I we have owned 7 Mitsubishi's. All from new and not one of them gave us a ...Read more

Great car, love it! Age has shown some problems though.
I bought this car as my first car at the start of the year. Got it for a great price with 230000 on the clock. Although it's a 2000 base model it still has some great features like power steering and mine came with cruise control. I've had people ask if it's a >2005 model car as it still looks modern!
The only major problem I've had was replacing a worn wheel bearing but keep in mind I drove down the east coast.

y. I would definitely recommend this car, love it! Update: After owning it for 3 years now my opinion is changing. I've put 50,000 kms on the clock since I got it. Problems I've encountered are engine leaks, rotors needing replacing, muffler needing replacing, battery, tyres, shock absorbers and now engine mounts. Most of those I would attribute to general wear & tear and are legitimate considering the age of the vehicle. The paint has suffered from sun damage too and is peeling on the hood, the roof and the bootlid. I do a lot of highway kms for work and still find the fuel economy surprisingly good (6L/100kms). Regardless, I'm looking forward to moving over to a small hatch! Nice power, light steering, nice storage spots, large seats, comfortable, modern styling. High fuel consumption.Similar opinion? Ralliart Magna
Purchased a one year old VY commodore in 2004. Had so many issues with it, returned to the dealer 5 times for warranty replacement issues. From electrics to mechanical, it was the biggest financial disaster of my life. In 2006 I traded it on an 02 Ralliart magna with 70,000km on the dial, to which all my friends said I was mad, and that I'd traded it for a girls car.
It's now 2014 and I've had the car for 8 years. I still get excited to drive it!

Incredible Car!!!
I owned a 2001 TJ Executive for 6 years which was an incredible car, never had a single problem with it, quite sad that they are not made anymore. These cars are probably the most underrated cars in Australia when it comes to luxury, reliability and especially power. Even with a slightly smaller engine, Magnas are more powerful than Commordores or Falcons IMO and are also better on fuel, actually they are incredible on fuel, better than most 4 cylinders. I loved this car, sadly it was rear ended but I always have my eyes locked on another one. Recommended for any type of driver.
Power. Fuel consumption. Size. Fun to drive. Pretty much everything.
Resale isn't the greatest.

Great car, very underrated
Got a 2000 TJ Advance 3.5 V6 with 167,000K's a several months ago. Since buying the car and putting about 10,000km's I changed the fluids and fitted a transmission cooler to extend the life of the transmission fluid. The car has been great, economical and fun to drive and easy to live with never once missing a beat, and the build quality is far better than the commodores and falcons that were made during the same time.
Reliable, build quality, price, smooth powerful engine
Spartan interior, slightly vague steering feel

Fantastic car, couldn't fault it!
We bought this 2002 Magna Advance 3.5L V6 in 2006 for $12,000 when it had just over 100,000km on the clock. It was an ex fleet car but in good condition. It now has almost 3000,000 km on it and has been absolutely perfect. Only problem was some water dripping onto a sensor (can't remember where water was coming from but not serious) that was showing a problem with the gearbox. No actual gearbox problem so easily fixed. Air conditioning is still freezing cold!
Servicing has been cheap and we only run 98 Octane in it to help keep it going wel...Read more
l. The fuel economy is pretty good too. There is a bit of a rattle now when it starts (still always starts without a problem though) which is apparently due to the lifters getting sticky. Mechanic said there is really nothing you can do about it so not to worry and it's common in Magna's of this age. We are reluctantly buying a new car as this just has a few too many klm and is starting to look a bit old, and we need a ute for a business. Wish we could clone this wonderful car! Powerful, comfortable, reliable, cheap to service. Nothing. Wish we could clone it.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

TJ Magna Series II
I got my TJ Magna 7 years ago $12000 with 50000 on the clock and had LPG conversion fitted at 100000 now over 200000 km on the clock and still going strong. Other than a new radiator last week routine servicing has kept it trouble free and it still drives like new on duel fuel.
Extremely under rated car and I hope my next is this reliable!
Easy to drive, reliable, economical & cheap to run.
Mitsubishi Paint job! Losing lustre needs regular waxing.

All round excellent car
I've now owned a Mitsubishi Magna Advance Wagon for the last four years and can swear by it's reliability.
I purchased this car second hand for $9000 with only 80000km's on the clock. I've since put another 70000kms on the car and it has proved itself to be very cheap to run.
At the time of purchase I was looking for a larger car and the purchase price was the deciding factor. Initially I saw this car as a stop gap purchase while I saved a bit more to purchase a Mazda 6. I still have the Magna and I'm no longer looking for a Mazda, it's that ...Read more

Legendary
We bought ours new in '01. Since then it has done 290000km+ (we live 40k out of town and drive in every day including weekends for the kids sport) with not one breakdown or expense other than normal servicing or wear and tear on brake pads, battery, tyres, etc. The only warranty claim we had was a clunking a/cond compressor at 5000km which never recurred. Every set of tyres got at least 58,000 km and we've never done a wheel alignment. Fuel economy is waning now @ 11lt/100km but for most of it's life we got 9.5lt/100km. Because we always park i...Read more

Perfect A- B car but don't even think about C!
I inherited this car from my dad (as many impoverished uni students do) and have nothing bad to say about this car. Basically this mode (2001) is pretty outdated there are plenty of fantastic new Mitsubishi's out there, this review is for anyone considering buying one second hard one I suppose.
After 10 years of driving the car drives and handles fine, it's pretty efficient with fuel and all the air conditioning, radio, etc works just fine. The battery died on me once but other then that the cars still pretty dependable and gets me from A to...Read more
B with no problem. The only real con is that the plastic around the windows is starting to peel away and needs strong glue and a good DIY job to stay air tight. It's had dozens of services over the years and while the time between services is shrinking (time before new problems arise), the car is still dependable and drives just fine. However if considering buying this car look at the specific details (kilometers, engine problems of that particular car etc) this can only give a general guide. Solidly dependable, fuel efficiency, good space, standard features work just fine. Perfect car for someone who just needs an A-B and has little money. Window plastic starting to peel away, not a car for someone who likes cars.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I just traded in my 2001 TJ Magna and after reading these reviews I should have traded my husband instead, because he made me trade it. I owned this car for 7 years and it was always reliable. I could get in and drive it 200k's alone and not worry. It was cheap on fuel in town and on a trip. Great car to drive, has a great burble sound. I never had any major issues, though in the end it did have a few oil leaks which I've been told are a Magna issue anyway. The auto changed gears smoothly, acceleration was responsive and quick.
