2005 X-Trail T30 Series II - Under-rated and often overlooked little workhorse...sometimes older is better
Just over 10 years ago now, we bought our first X-Trail. Since then we've owned 3, all petrol 2005 T30 models, and quite simply, whilst maybe not the best looking sort in the SUV line up, the pros far outweigh the cons for you to consider this as your family day tripper / weekend warrior.
Originally, our decision criteria was as follows: We wanted a vehicle to use for both the (new) family run about as well as a camping weekender/interstate mover, that was inexpensive on fuel, registration and insurance, and with loads of space for those big t...Read more
rips. Alongside the X-trail, the line up consisted of the Toyota Rav4, Honda CR-V, Suzuki Grand Vitara, and Subaru's Forester. Although the pick of the bunch for offroad capability is the Vitara, we wanted something roomier. We decided to steer clear of the Honda due to $$$ and being the least capable off road. The Rav4 and Forester were close 2nd...both great offroad, the Forester had more boot space (amazingly) but the back seat had issues fitting 3 car seats and pretty squishy leg room, and the Rav4 lost points on the swing out rear door (same as the CR-V) and lack of interior space. Which leaves the X-Trail... We originally bought a manual 2005 ST-X, and as fun as the manual was to drive, we traded in for an automatic 2005 ST a couple months later due to the wife preferring auto transmission. With 78000 Km's on the clock, it was to become our go-everywhere for the next 9 years. Base model, however the previous owner kitted it out with roof racks, towbar, spotties, LED driving head lights, sway bar, and upgraded front disc brakes. Engine is a 4 cylinder 2.5 litre petrol variant with a 60 litre fuel tank, and a solid 132 kW of output. For a 4cyl engine, it's punchy, and it never let us down. Easy to service, generally inexpensive, we only ever had an issue with perished head rocker gasket at 245,0000 Km's. Fuel economy averages just over 9 - 10 litres/100 Km highway driving, just over 11 around town, depending on how much lead is in that driving foot of yours.Similar opinion? Excellent!
We are just in love with this model of car. It is a family car and we use it to travel as a family to places such as shopping, holidays etc. Very comfortable with leather seats. We use it pretty much on a weekly basis. Serviced every 6 months and there are no issues with the car!

Couldn’t recommend it more highly
I do a lot of country, cravel road driving. The X-Trail holds firm to any terrain I have driven on, including the beach. It isn’t big and bulky but definately has ample space for my equipment, and I like how I sit high enough in the seat to have excellent viewing. I like the interior, it isn’t iver crowded.
Great fuel efficency and servicing is resonable. I will definately buy another one.

4WD X-Trail
Performance & Handling is great. Feel so safe driving it. Has everything the Luxury has. Heated leather seats, so big and comfy. A great little part on the front dash, where you can put your phone & charge it while you drive. It an extra one. huge area for legs in back. Overall a really good car.

Great car - you'll not be disappointed!
I rather reluctantly bought my ST-S model back in 2014 with 140k on the clock. Just divorced, money was tight and I wanted a half decent SUV to replace the new Kluger I suddenly couldn't really afford anymore. Well, let me say that it was one of the best decisions (second to divorce!!) I've ever made. My beloved Exxy has not missed a beat in 100k and I could not be more pleased with its reliability, handling and economy. I was originally reluctant to purchase a car with (what I considered) high mileage, but she is still as tight as a drum ...Read more
at 224k and going strong!! Love driving it, no noises, plenty of room, surprisingly capable off-road as we do a bit of 4x4 driving. Offset dash takes a bit to get used to, and I replaced CD with a double din head unit for Bluetooth etc - fabulous. She will be very, very hard to replace when that sad day comes....Similar opinion? A true workhorse!!!
Purchased in 2009 with just over 100,000kms on the clock. It is now about to tick over 300,000kms and has been an awesome drive.
Onroad it handles and cruises well. A little sluggish on hills but 300ks may well do that! Reliable to the core!! Only issues have been a new starter motor, rocker cover gasket and front left CV.
Offroad it has been unbelievable - tackling more than an SUV should or could.
Would I recommend? Absolutely. Driver position and view, room for 5 adults and all the luggage they require. Will tow a boat but yes the hills ...Read more

The 100 Klm,s mine is the TI model with sun roof & leather trim making it a very comfortable drive being automatic it,s towing capacity is 1.1/2 ton the manual is 2 ton and now that I run a different tyre to Bridgestone it is much quieter on the road

13 years later car still drives like new
Wife and I bought this car back in 2004 when I needed it for work using a car allowance. After about a year my job was made redundant and from that time onwards my wife drove it. Then this year I have strted another job with car allowance so we bought a new car, my wife drives that and after 13 years I am back behind the wheel of the X-trail.
It's done 161k and drives like a dream. Really love this car and don't for a moment regret buying it all those years ago. Will keep this until the wheels come off. Seems economical but don't know know ...Read more
what fuel economy it gets as it does not tell you like modern cars do. Inside interior is practical and good quality materials used. our 3 kids have been through this car and it has held up well. We put seat covers on the seats when new and I only recently took them off as I am driving it now and the cloth seats present like new. The cargo interior is prone to scratching of the plastic though so be mindful of that if you are carrying loads in the back. Mechanically no trouble over the years, a small issue about six months ago with a faulty sensor in the engine but was easily fixed and was inexpensive to fix. I paid $1600 last week for new brake discs on the rear, 160k service and 4 new tyres and a wheel alignment and balancing and now it drives really well. The Nissan mechanic at the dealership said this series of X-trail lasts a long time and is a very well build vehicle compared to new models on the road today. Great car, really love it.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Great safe famly transport, Long life, cheap to maintain.
Having arranged 8 of these robust well made SUV for family and friends, the slightly higher driving position helps city & country traffic and off road situations easy to deal with and the comfort levels makes any trip pleasant. Good service & parts backup by Dealer and normal service places Australia wide, low running costs has kept most of these units still in service with the owners and no complaints to me.

Best practical and reliable car I have had
This car will not die. All I have done for servicing is regular oil changes every 5,000kms with air/oil filter changes as per servicing schedule. 338,000kms later I am still running on the original CV joints and drive belts. The auto transmission is still fine with just some chatter from the timing chain and the suspension now a little sloppy.
I use the vehicle every day and also to tow and transport heavy items in the spacious rear of the wagon. The 4wheel drive has not missed a beat and has pulled me out of some tricky mudholes when I have t...Read more

The reasearch was worth all the hard work
I bought a caravan and needed a vehicle to tow it. When buying a car, I like to get it right because I keep them a long time as I prefer not to chop and change all the time. I have had my present car for 14 years. I chased up various SUVs on the internet and read the qualities they had and what the reviewers said about them. I visited an SUV specialist to get his input into my purchase. In all this took me about three months.
At the end of the day, one vehicle kept coming up...the X Trail. I told the SUV specialist what I was planning to do ...Read more
and he said "X Trail." The caravan I bought has a weight of just over 1-tonne and the XTrail can tow 2 tonne. Most mid size SUVs can only tow one and a half tonnes. I set myself a budget of $10,000 and started looking on the internet for one. They varied considerably in price and like so many SUVs out there they were high mileage. Anything under 150,000ks was a rarity at that price. I narrowed it down to three, all with under 150,000ks. Only one was under $10,000 and it was a 2007 top of the range model with 132,000 on the clock with one owner from new. I took it for a test drive and knew I had found the right one, especially as I saw another one exactly the same a few weeks later which was another $3,000.Similar opinion? Love this baby badly!
Bought it couple weeks ago and i think i just pick up a treasure. Driven couple weeks now, fuel consumption is low if compared to the rival. I used to drive pajero and isuzu, compared to this one it's totally a bargain. 177000km on the clock, engine sound still quiet. no doubt that the owner take a good care on this car. Hardly imagine it's a 10 yo car. Went to the mechanic and check all the stuff and make sure nothing dodgy. this car would surely run another 10 years no problem.

Funky & Versatile AWD. Fantastic.
We brought our used X-Trail Ti 5 years ago with around 80,000km. Its now done 140,000km and hasn't missed a beat. Its been a fantastic family car which is easy to live with. Nibble around the city & good on the highway. Its a fun car to drive with great all round vision especially for shorter people such as my wife. Road noise is not the best but for the type of car it is, acceptable.
The quirky speedo in the center takes time to get accustomed to but the bonus is you get an extra glove-box or storage compartment for the driver & I think its ...Read more

Good
I am wanting to upgrade a the 08 model however we want a 7 seater car, if the nissan x trail was to make a 7 seater (I hope they do) we would buy a xtrail without any hesitation
This car has been a fantastic family car. For it not being a huge car the boot is fantastic. I find it great on petrol and it does have a bit of get up and go. We have a 2002 model and mechanically nothing has been wrong with it, a very reliable car. The boot of the car is great it will fit a jogger pram in and still room left over for a trolley load of shopping to b...Read more

Just changed the engine radiator, cose it's leaking at the bottom. it's very simple and easy to fix, all i did was just pull and plug.

Reliable family SUV
I purchased this vehicle in April '05,after having resisted the temptation to go to AWD for years. Now with 17k on the clock I am still impressed with the power, comfort, interior space. Yes, the center mounted controls were difficult to get used to, however, after short period of time found to be functional. Have only used in in limited off-road capacity, beaches and sand. Bearing in mind that is is only a soft roader it handled these conditions perfectly. On a long trip with a family (4) including two 182cm boys, luggage and surfboards, the X...Read more
Trail exceeded all expectations. Now a couple of years later - traded vehicle with 175.000km on clock - very satisfied - traded for a 2013 Dualis - just a smaller car all round. X-Trail Ti: Interior space, immense sunroof, good + audio system with 6 cd stacker. Very comfortable seats, far better than previous car(Verada Xi.)Intergral roof racks, functional and very efficient air con. Magnified driver's rear vision mirror. New experience and takes some getting used to.Lack of audio controls on steering wheel.Other than these minor irrations, I can't fault the X TrailSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Nissan Xtrail - Best Value for money
Best of the xtrails are those built between 2002 to 2007. Mine is auto has done 200k and still drives like a new vehicle. SErvicing is cheap approx $250 every 15,000km. Drives like a car whilst also get the benefit of all wheel drive.

Longer term update
I purchased the auto base model ST in early 2006 mainly on it's price of $32,000 and have now done 53,00 km. Car was quite a lot cheaper than its rivals and has performed well. Replaced original tyres at 51,000 which cured the slipping and squealing of the originals. Replaced front pads at 53,000 slight bowing to rotors but they did not need machining. Rear seats fold level with the back area making a easy to use huge storage area A+++. Length and width about the same as a sedan which with the higher seats and good visibility make this car a p...Read more
leasure to drive and park. I tow a small van comfortably at 95 kmh but have noticed that auto transmission fluid smell ?? if I do 110kmh for longer periods. Aircon re-gassed once with a slight improvement. Overall it's not a Triton or Navara but it is significantly cheaper, easy to drive and quite competent in 4wd and towing. Update 3 1/2 years later and vehicle has done 92,000km. Crank angle sensor went at around 60,00 km and ruined a holiday. I was a bit bad as my model supposed to have the updated sensor and it still failed. $85 for a $20 sensor plus labour. Replaced diff inspection plug, front shock absorbers and rear brake pads at 92,000 km. That's right 92,000 for rear brake pads. Vehicle still uses no oil between my 5,000 km changes. Petrol consumption around town with auto transmission remains at 26 mpg (converted from litres/100km). Not great but it is an auto. Aircon still not good enough on hot days and would be next to useless for kids in the back. Later models may be better. Overall it is still a really practical and nice car to drive. I quite like it but feel at 150,000 km would be a good time to move it on. My mechanic thinks so to. In both city and country driving this is a very easy/comfortable car to drive. I now prefer the centre mounted dash. Storage with rear seats down is fantastic. The motor has plenty of power. My wife likes driving it. Yes the plastic trim does scratch easy. My aircon is a bit marginal on hot days. Original tyres slip and squeal. Exterior paitwork marks easily but don't they all if you don't get white.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
