Excellent 4K player, shame about the remote
This is an excellent 4K player that delivers excellent UHD imagery, while its upscaling gives even DVDs a lift if you do a little bit of tweaking. This is what I was hoping for considering it has the same chip set and processing as Panasonic's more expensive versions.
I played selected darkly-lit scenes and daylight scenes on the BR versions of "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" and then rewatched them in 4K. The difference was spectacular. It complies with the HDR format only. None of the Panasonic 4K players support Dolby Vision (which is ...Read more
why I'm considering buying an AppleTV set top box for iTunes viewing). A firmware update might be the only hope here, but I'm not holding my breath. Audio output is DTS-HD and Dolby Digital. So, it can output Dolby Atmos discs, but bitstream encoded I'm guessing. I got the surprise of my life when the screen on my 9-year-old Bose Lifestyle system announced that it was playing back in Dolby, though it didn't specify what variety. I didn't know that was a possibility for the old audio system. Looking at the manual's specs, I get the feeling that this would be a pretty good music player too. Only the top of the line 900 supports THX. The unit comes with the appropriate 4K/3D-capable HDMI cable. I couldn't hear any noise coming from the unit during disc playback.1 comment

OK if you only want to play new UHD discs on it
It plays UHD 4k discs great, and I liked the setup and menu, however I returned this player because:
1) It is not region free out of the box. HN said they could contact a Panasonic Rep about getting it set to Region Free for free if I wished... It would play my old Region 4 (obviously) and Region 2 (UK) DVDs, but not my Region 1 (USA).
2) It also put a thick black letterbox around the whole screen when playing my old Region 2 DVDs, I assume due to aspect ration/resolution upscale issues...
3) It would not correctly play my 4K movie files via...Read more
USB or via Media Server (over Wi-Fi). The very same files play fine direct to my LG 4k TV via USB port or Media Server, but on this player (I used the same USB 3.0 stick) they were jittery and had no audio (even if I used the blue USB 3.0 port at the rear of the player). TOP TIP - I updated to the newest firmware over the LAN for my player, and after the firmware update had downloaded and turned off the player, it took a full 3-5 mins of a flashing red power LED before it finally updated. I was worried there was an issue it took so long, but recommend patience...

Not great but works ok
Not the best player you could buy, but works ok for the price i paid. Did have to put into the service center because it was getting hotter in standby mode than it does when playing a disc. Was told by Panasonic that this is standard for this model, So now i switch it off at the wall when not using it .

Very Good Entry Level Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player
This model is the cheapest UHD Blu-Ray player of the Panasonic line up. I found the picture and sound quality playing UHD Blu-Ray discs to be terrific. The upscaling of full HD Blu-Ray discs also looks good. There are also 2 usb ports for playing videos stored on portable drives with the rear port supporting usb3. This model lacks some of the features found on the more expensive models like wifi connect and a second hdmi port however if you don't need these features, this model is very good value.

Can this player be made region free for DVDs and bluray?
6 answers
Hi Donald,
When i took it too the repair shop, they did set it for region free dvd, but it can't be set region free for bluray.
Thanks
I Googled it and Panasonic states that their service technicians can make it region free: "Our Panasonic DVD & Blu Ray products are region encoded for DVD Region 4 out of the box, but can be multi-zoned to play DVD's from all regions. Your DVD unit or Blu-Ray unit can be multi-zoned by any of our Service Agents free of charge and some models of DVD Player are able to be multizoned by the customer". However, this is not listed as one fo the applicable models.
Alternatively, you can have a look at https://www.leawo.org/tutorial/how-to-make-your-blu-ray-player-region-free-or-make-your-blu-ray-disc-region-free-1373.html and see whether that is of any use to you. I haven't tried it, so I can't vouch for whether it works or is safe. (I have a DVD player that is region-free, so I haven't had to try this on my player).

Does this item play region 2, region B dvds?
2 answers
According to the user manual Region management information, the unit can playback BD Video/DVD Video discs of the following region codes, including "ALL" - BD Video - Region B and DVD Video - Region 4.
Yeah, mine was Region locked and would ONLY play Region 4, I believe tried a Region 1 (US) then a 2 (UK) DVD with only the second working, but as per my review. When I took it back the salesman believed he could contact the Panasonic Rep for a region unlock code, but I've seen nothing online to support that.
I had other issues with it, include difficulty playing my 4k Files overs its USB or DLNA. I've yet to find a UHD player which is Region unlocked out of the box for DVDs, meaning if you have DVDs over multiple regions in your collection you will need to retain your multi region DVD player...annoying!

Why does it say it hooks thru wifi, but when I try it's not reading it and I can't get it to. Frustrating.
