Saved our dogs life
Recently our pet had a bad case of pneumonia which was life threatening in the end the bill was close to $3000 and if we didn't have cover Oscar would have had to be put down. I am so happy we took this policy as it literally saved our dogs life, we are happy to still have Oscar in our lives.

Great peace of mind
We signed up for petmed about 2 years ago and our dog poppy has had a couple of trips to the vet - claims were easy we got 80% back and they now have an online claiming method which is pretty easy. We had to send some history in which the vet actually got a bit cranky about but he said that's the same for all insurance.

Large claim we couldn't afford
It was a large claim and we did have to provide the history, we were worried because we could not afford the bill but the claim was paid 80% of the bill it did take more than a week. The insurance did make a stressful time so much easier.

Very friendly staff
We recently signed up for Petmed as we wanted to avoid more expensive vet bills for this new cat as the last one, bless her cost us so much and we still miss her so. It's easy to get this organized just takes a few minutes, the staffs are friendly and speak perfect English – I think they are here in Aus.

Happy pet owner
We got our dog as a puppy and after checking out pet insurance reviews on Canstar we joined Petmed. We have had to claim 3 times and every time we received 80% back and were paid quite quickly we are very happy to have this insurance.

Excellent service fast claim
Our dog Cooper, was bitten by a snake. The cost of the treatment was more than I expected so I am really glad we had the insurance.
The claim was fast and easy the vet did nearly all of the work. The insurance gave us peace of mind we wouldn't be without it. Thank you for your fantastic product and friendly
service from your staff.

Good Value & Great Service
My partner and I researched a number of insurance policies before joining and PetMed was clearly the best value on paper. Setting up the policy was very straightforward and you can manage your pets account/lodge any claims through an easy to use online system. Customer support via email and telephone are also available. My experience with claiming has been overwhelmingly positive. Couldn't be happy with PetMed :)

Very easy to join
I joined this insurance recently and they made it very easy over the phone, not many questions and friendly lady who asked questions about our dog Bear. I have not had to claim touch wood but I can say the staff are nice.

Cant fault them.
I have had Petmed pet insurance for my dogs for over 2 years now, i have claimed around 5 times now( dogs run around in the bush every day and one of them had skin allergy) and i have to say they have paid out every time no fuss at all and my premium has stayed the same(so far). Would highly recommend them to date.

Quick payment Great Service
We took our Emma to the vet for aggravated skin conditions, we sent Petmed all the relevant info with our claim. Received the payment in 8 days. I really hope we don't need to claim again but knowing petmed is there helps us sleep easier at night.

I had to put it on my credit card
I feel like the insurance could be improved because our George needed quite a lot of treatment and surgery, we had to pay the vet ourselves and then put in the claim. We did get paid pretty quick so luckily I have a credit card that dose not charge interest for 30 days. I would prefer if the vet was paid directly but the good part is I would still be paying this off for a long time if we did not have the insurance so all in all the policy did work.

The only ones to help me
My dog is nearly 12 so many companies didn't want to know us. The premium was very reasonable with good cover. Love that pre-existing conditions are covered after some time and we send in a form. Will check out a policy for my cat when renewal due.

Good system
The vet practice printed out all the paperwork and sent it off to petmed. We were reimbursed with no problems at all the full amount (- $75 excess) for xrays/bloods/sedation etc straight into the bank. Overall a very pleased. This is first time we've ever had to make a claim.

Thanks Petmed
My dog swallowed a matchbox car and had to have surgery to get it out, I was not worrying about the vet bills because I knew that our policy would take care of it. Our vet did most of the paperwork and we were paid really quickly. Normally something like this would stress me out but not this time. Thank you.

WARNING! Dont go near these robbers
NO STAR rating for - No service; HUGE premiums; lots of small print; unbearable waiting time on the phone. There is no policy refund if you make one claim and decide this is not for you. After deductions for co-payments, and excess the advertised 80% refund does not exist. I was thousands out of pocket by the end of the year. Be warned this is a rip off policy.

Absolutely disgusted with service. Use at your peril Shame there isnt a -NO STAR rating...
Facts:
After making a claim (first one) i find i am not covered for the procedure to remove a lump from my pet as she had one removed years ago and thus, as these charlatans treat the skin as one organ, the condition is deemed pre-existing.
Yes I am at fault, its in the PDS so I am an idiot for not reading it cover to cover, BUT;
These Ripping B-stards took 3 months to decide this fact and even then didnt inform me, i had to chase it up to find out they had decided to refuse t pay out, thus taking another $200 plus dollars off me before I ...Read more

Do NOT insure with this mob.
From reading other reviews my experience is not unique. My pet moved overseas around half way through the policy year. As they were no longer covered under the policy (fair enough) I cancelled it. However, AFS Pet-Med continued to collect the monthly premiums from my account, which I could not stop. When I inquired their response was "Tough, read the Product Disclosure Statement." So I paid for approximately 6 months cover I did not have or could possibly claim against.
I have cancelled many policies for life insurance, cars, income protection etc and either received a part-refund if paid in full or have had monthly premium deductions cease.
One star is one star too many.

Deliberate delaying tactics on payment on otherwise a small percentage of claim
This is rort.
My sentiments are echoed by both the vet and the veterinary hospital that I have been dealing with.
Granted the policy is what it is and we made the decision to take the comfort of some insurance, even in the advanced knowledge that this policy was not perfect - see below reviews about the policy inadequacies. Accepting them, the first thing is they have consistently changed the policy through the course of the last 10 years to their advantage, then again - we had the option at anytime to terminate the policy, but we chose...Read more
not to. However, now we are claiming on the few things we can claim on - they have consistently found fault in the manner of how the application was presented to them - even though the vet hospital filled it out - and done everything it would seem to extend the period of not having to make the claim settlement. We have received some payment for some of the costs - now 3 months after the claim was first made. The rest of the claim they say will be made available in the next 10 working days. Who does that? Claim all approved and still they wont make a deposit into an account now? Then they send a cheque - that adds another couple of working days on to the period that they can use other peoples cash. They make my blood boil. Dont use.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Questions & Answers
Sandyasked
I have accidental Pet insurance with AFS PetMed. The only claim ever made was when my Golden Retriever ate an entire ball and this was paid no problem. (It involved a lot of vomiting!)
However premiums have shot up from $22 to $35.50 per month and I have 2 dogs covered, so I'm now paying $70 per month!! I am thinking of swapping to Bow Wow Meow as their premiums for same cover are $38. Reviews seem favourable.
My question: Why do premiums go up for ACCIDENT cover? Surely older dogs are more sensible, less likely to run off and do stupid things and are generally slower in every way - it doesn't make sense! I understand premiums rising for illness cover, but I've never had mine covered for this. Has anyone ever queried this?
1 answer
We did a bit of research and spoke to the staff at Petmed they told us they do not have accident only insurance and all theirs is all comprehensive that covers sickness as well, Our vet advised us to get comprehensive, he told me that the accident only plans are the ones he sees a lot of people unhappy because many problems are classed as an illness even if you think it is an accident. What if your dog gets an accidental illness? Maybe you should check your policy or give them a call.

What is the best pet insurance company?

I here Woolies are doing a good job. Note there is only one underwriter in Australia, though there are multiple companies that look like they are insuring you. Hollards - a South African company.
I am with Woolies but I heard that Bow Wow Meow are ranked the #1 pet insurers ranked by over 500 people. I did read testimonials and they are very good. I am thinking to switch over.
Be very careful about swapping insurers for your dog because you will not be insured for everything if you have claimed before, once you claim for something it is going to be pre existing when you go to the new company, stay with who you are with right now if you have made any claims. My friend found out the hard way and her dog is not covered for some things that can happen again. You can fill in a form after I think 1.5 years and they might get rid of the preexisting condition rule.
