Early Insurer as well
I had 5 animals in 2005 and back then the service was great. Claiming was good. Over the years as my animals have passed away. When I had one of my dogs die on the operating table in 2010 they wanted his medical history from the vets for the previous five years as I had only made a one or two claims then none for 3 years They implied that i was making a false claim, they were suspicious. I went off, They said that because I hadn't made a claim then make one, as i kept my dog healthy and he didn't have any serious illness that I would makin...Read more
g a false claim. They did apologise but then told me I had to keep paying the premiums until Max's policy was renewed. I too paid premiums for a dead dog. Why they didn't deduct the amount from payment claim I donot know. They made a horrible time for me over the loss of my Max even worse. And now I have one dog left and when changing my credit card details, I find that they have cheaper policies. Again I too wasn't informed of any changes.Similar opinion? When I got my beagle puppy in 2001 I thought it only sensible to insure her as she was and still is full of mischief. I don't have the records for as are back as 2001 but in 2009 the premiums were $39.85 a month. In 2011 - $55.34. By 2012 the cost was $72.13. In 2013 they went up to $91.13.
Imagine my horror when I received the costing for 2014/2014. A HUGE INCREASE to $198 per month. My beagle pup is now 13 and is at a time in her life when her health is far more of an issue than previously. I feel that this recent rise in premiums ...Read more
is as good a signal as I am likely to get from AFS Pet Med, that now the chances have increased where I will need their support, they have as good as told me they are not interested. I was advised of this huge increase before my dog underwent specialist treatment for a tumour. Heaven knows what the premiums would have been if Pet Med had known that I would be submitting a claim for some $7000 of which they reimbursed me $4000. This major operation has meant that from July 1, 2009 until November 25, 2014 I have paid $4239 in premiums and recovered $7414. Without the operation, I would have more or less broken even - spent about as much on premiums as I recovered. My advice when taking out pet insurance is to try and get an indication of how you will be treated when your pet is elderly. You might also like to think about setting up a separate bank account with a monthly direct debit so that you have something set aside for vet bills. And, as others have pointed, as far as Pet Med is concerned you wont be inundated with reams of useless paper and long waits on the phone.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Early insurer
I insured my dog with AFS PetMed almost 14 years ago and then insured a second pet over 9 years ago. Initially there were not a lot of pet insurers so the premiums were high which I accepted.
Both these pets have recently died and I have just acquired a new puppy. I can now insure this dog for less than 25% of my previous 2 dogs or way less than 50% of my original dog through another pet insurance company with a greater % return per claim and no $75 excess per test...i.e. a blood test for 3 different diseases incurred 3 x $75 excess charges.

Shocking organisation
They don't care, they make it enormously difficult to claim by asking for far too much paperwork - even things the vet doesn't have! They put up premiums at a crazy rate and their customer service is woeful. They have such strict deadlines and expect you to use snail mail. We will be leaving.
Bad experience

Never ever use afs petmed
This company has been very difficult over the past 7 years in which I had my dog insured. When I first signed up in 2005 it cost around $36 per month. It's now $78 per month ( more than my husbands Health insurance).
Each year they changed the rules and now don't cover consultations or like $10 or something. They also take the first $75 for each new claim each year. It just about made claiming pointless.
My dog be very ill and I wasn't sure if they would cover what was needed as he is a bulldog. I didn't no if I could afford to go ahead unl...Read more

Insuring my Pets for over three decades
Fiirst thing I did on arrival in Australia was to insure my three young dogs( they were insured in the UK)
One of the only pet insurers was AFS so I signed up with them.I have no problems with the staff, all very nice but claims were handled soooo badly and very long winded with a paper mountain, got very frustrating. They are changing the goal posts so much to suite themselves it is not very attractive and some of the things creeping in are downright unfair practice, and I do hope the ombudsman will look into it all .
.I am stuck, my pets...Read more

Surprised by the other reviews on this site
I am a little puzzled by some of the past reviews. I have used several pet insurance companies and switched to petmed after a girlfriend told me about it. I guess if you have a policy for years and never used it I may feel different, but we had to use the policy almost immediately because our neighbor backed over our cat. It was the difference between finding $1400 or having our Sooty destroyed, something we couldn't bare doing. I agree there is a cost to insurance, but in my case I was glad to have it. On a positive note, sooty is now doing fine.
Used it immediately, a reasonable price

Be aware of their terms and conditions
We had our dog insured with Pet Med for 12 years. Overall I thought they were quite good, however I have just been caught out by a sneaky clause. Our dog recently died and they will not let me cancel the policy, until the contract terms expires in June 2013. I was never made aware of that term. Be careful. I have complained to Dept of Fair trading but take into consideration - it is going to cost me over $850 when my dog is not alive.

Incompetent
I have never met an more incompetent insurer, they used to be good but no more. I cancelled my policy, they couldn't get the credit card deductions right, they cancelled and confrmed they instalment would be refunded, and what did they do, they took another premium instalment after cancellation. I mean lord knows how they would handle a claim on a policy, I am not hanging around to see it. I have a better policy with another company, NOT rebadged service.
Nothing at all,
Too long to answer a phone, too long to responded to emails, too long to get it right.

Terrible
They used to be great, apart from some of the ridiculous exclusions they used to have. Now, I have just been told they only pay out $10 for consultations. My dog had a seizure. I took her for consultation, it cost me $140, and I get $10 back. Are they joking!!! It's not even worth staying with them anymore. All I can say is GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! They are constantly changing the policy so you just can't keep up with what you can and can't claim.
Their ridiculous exclusions

Stay away from these low lifes. They are only in it for the money. Even if you do make claims, you are limited in how many you can make each financial year and even then you get hardly any money back from them. Look elsewhere.
There is nothing positive about this mob.
They are heartless. Our pet dog died and we cancelled the policy only to find that they kept taking premiums out of our account. We were told that because we made a claim that financial year we were obligated to pay for the rest of the financial year as the policy was still in force, even though our pet had passed away - meaning we had to pay another $300 for nothing!

changes to consultation fee refunds are a joke
bad service, high fees for what you get back

My cat had to be euthanised 29/6/10 and I noticed 2 more payments taken out of my credit card for June & July. I rang and was told the policy was for 12 months and the anniversary was 1/6/10 so I will have to pay monthly until May next year. Ridiculous having to pay for a dead cat as I had not claimed anything for last few years prior to my cat's last treatments before he was put down!!
Keep charging after your pet has died

Do not go near this company Customer Loyalty means nothing
I have had my 2 dogs with this organisation, one for 10 years and 1 for 5.
They were very good when I first joined but over the years they have bocome more difficult to deal with. They have constantly changed the policy they excluded any 'breed specific medical conditions' not individual dog. They have sonce lifted that exclusion but then limited benefits. A nightmare to keep up with the changes. I recently got a letter advising me that as my dog is the age he is (10) the premium has almost doubled. I was told in so many words that if I did n...Read more

Do not insure your pet with AFS pet med.I tried to complain to [name removed] the managing Director and they wouldn't even allow me to speak with him...now that is a company you never want to deal with.
They do not deserve 1 star. None! this company is a complete joke.
43mins waiting for them to answer the phone. Do not pay out on claims without a fight, customer service appalling....Strongly reccomend that if you love your pet (and your sanity) Never use AFS PetMed

I will definitely look elsewhere when I get another dog. They cannot seem to work out a fair system to cover everyone and they keep experimenting and making their current policy-owners guinea-pigs.
Nothing any more (they used to be good)
They keep whittling away at the benefits they offer. They have now specifically excluded eye cover for my dog when it is the one ailment she has. What is the point of insurance.

My previous review of AFS Petmed has now changed significantly. We had been insured with them for 6 years and were happy. However we have now received our policy renewal for July 2009-July 2010 and were very disappointed.
They now will only pay $10 towards consultations, and have imposed excesses which we have determined no longer make this insurance financially worthwhile. We have now cancelled our policies. They are now charging a 30% co-payment for any illness condition and if that condition leads to surgery and additional 10% is applicabl...Read more

Questions & Answers

I have accidental Pet insurance with AFS PetMed. The only claim ever made was when my Golden Retriever ate an entire ball and this was paid no problem. (It involved a lot of vomiting!)
However premiums have shot up from $22 to $35.50 per month and I have 2 dogs covered, so I'm now paying $70 per month!! I am thinking of swapping to Bow Wow Meow as their premiums for same cover are $38. Reviews seem favourable.
My question: Why do premiums go up for ACCIDENT cover? Surely older dogs are more sensible, less likely to run off and do stupid things and are generally slower in every way - it doesn't make sense! I understand premiums rising for illness cover, but I've never had mine covered for this. Has anyone ever queried this?
1 answer
We did a bit of research and spoke to the staff at Petmed they told us they do not have accident only insurance and all theirs is all comprehensive that covers sickness as well, Our vet advised us to get comprehensive, he told me that the accident only plans are the ones he sees a lot of people unhappy because many problems are classed as an illness even if you think it is an accident. What if your dog gets an accidental illness? Maybe you should check your policy or give them a call.

What is the best pet insurance company?

I here Woolies are doing a good job. Note there is only one underwriter in Australia, though there are multiple companies that look like they are insuring you. Hollards - a South African company.
I am with Woolies but I heard that Bow Wow Meow are ranked the #1 pet insurers ranked by over 500 people. I did read testimonials and they are very good. I am thinking to switch over.
Be very careful about swapping insurers for your dog because you will not be insured for everything if you have claimed before, once you claim for something it is going to be pre existing when you go to the new company, stay with who you are with right now if you have made any claims. My friend found out the hard way and her dog is not covered for some things that can happen again. You can fill in a form after I think 1.5 years and they might get rid of the preexisting condition rule.

You should write to the department of fair trading - if they get enough people they may do something about it. We are about to buy another dog - i won't be insuring with them again!
