How long is a piece of string? Seriously, I found with tyre pressures you have to be guided by your tyre fitter because he knows the performance of the tyres you have fitted, the size/weight of your caravan unloaded & loaded and the terrain you will be driving on. As I mentioned in an earlier post you must manage your tyres, adjust the pressures to suit the road conditions. I found, after fitting new tyres, getting the pressure right was a matter of trial and error.

Hi Colin, I have only done a limited amount of sand driving with the Scorpions without any problems. I have never experienced any problems driving on beaches even in soft sand. Once again you need to drop tyre pressures; this will vary according to whether you are in really soft or firm sand. I am able to access our local beach along a 200 metre soft sand track without having to worry about dropping pressures however if I was going to drive around Fraser Island I would probably drop them to 25psi.

There will be air pressure and load specifications written on the side of the tyre - all tyres - if it is not there the tyre is not up to Australian spec
Read it and set pressure accordingly
Do not set air pressure lower than 60% of max pressure indicated regardless of load weights
The recommended tyre pressure for your car refers ONLY to the tyres on the car when new - NOT AFTERMARKET TYRES
Read the information on the new tyres and set pressures based on that - not the OEM tyre pressures
Be cautious going on information from the tyre retailer they may be well intentioned but not necessarily correct
Read the label / information on the tyre and go from there
If in doubt set pressure a little higher than you think - this is less much risk than running pressure too low
Low pressure can result in heat build up and failure of tyre

Hi, the scorpion atr is a all terrain mud tyre although it’s not a more extreme mud 4x4 tyre it’s a good balance if you’re 80% on the road and want something that works fine off it, while the verde is more your usual road spec tyre probably not the best for off road.

From a Fossie owner (6 so far) on 16 inch wheels, I had good results with Michelin Energy XM2 both on and off road. With my 2017 Fossie I cant fit them (17 inch) so tried Michelin Primacy SUV ( which didnt like) so wifes 2017 Fossie got Pirelli All Season Verde which we are very happy with. My Forester has ended up with Pirelli ATR which so far are fantastic.

Car makers generally specify lower pressures for a softer ride but this isn't necessarily good for the tyres. General rule of thumb is that if you do high speed driving or carry passengers & cargo that you should increase the pressure by 2 to 4 psi above the manufacturer recommendation. For comparison, I keep the tyre pressures in our Prado at 36 psi for driving around the city and increase this to 38 to 40 psi when we go long distance with a fully loaded car. Hope this helps

We have always had the tyres on 36 psi for local driving, and on 40 when you have a heavy load or towing a trailer or long trips it is better for the car and on petrol usage as well, otherwise phone the car manufacturer for more information, but this is what we always do, hope this helps you.

I run 40psi on my 90 series Prado around town and highway and get perfect wear across the tyre. The tyre plac says 28 and the tyres howl around the corners.

If Pirelli Scorpion AT R is the tyre you're asking about, they're good up to a point...do not forget it is NOT a mud tyre. I've gone through "light/normal mud", the car was sliding around and "fish tailing" but the tyres were pulling through with confidence. Raining on a fire trail and going uphill again was a not concern for the Scorpion ATR.

Hi Dennis - to be honest I don't know. I think it depends what state you are in so maybe best to check with you local tyre shop. I do know however that the tyre place I used fitted one size higher than was originally used on the Navara was this was both legal and seems to perform very well indeed. Hope this helps but sorry I cannot say for sure if it is legal.

Couple of questions-
What model landcruiser?
What size Pirelli's did you fit?
What type of tyre was on before?

My comparison is only against 2 other tyres - Grandtreks and BFG's.
Living in the same area, doing the same amount of km's and travelling on the same roads I think the Scorpions handle much better than the other 2 in all conditions. Especially when its raining.
Example - We had some flash flooding here recently and the cruiser felt stable, even under high speed.

Having said that - if you think the grip isn't as good as you expect, no one can tell you that you're wrong. You know how the car should handle.

I run mine at 38 PSI and when towing the caravan inflate the rears to 40 PSI. Noticed that at 35 PSI there was little scuffing on the outside of the tyres but that maybe to my driving style and the car. However as an all round ATR tyre and after 20,000kms on sealed, unsealed, wet and dry roads am finding them excellent and on the motorway very quiet.

People don't believe me when I tell them how good my Pirelli ATR tyres are or that I did 135000 km on the previous set. My replacement Pirelli's have been on since July last year with no visible signs of wear. Most of the driving was on sealed roads, tyres a very quiet. On dirt tracks I never lost traction in the wet or dry, and never had a problem on the beach. I personally highly recommend them. Size was a problem I had to import them from the US, because that size is no longer in Australia.

Hi Bob. Yes, yes, and YES. They were number one in sand (in the internationally endorsed comparison), number one for low road noise, and number one for shortest braking distance. No more needs to be said, but they were top 3 in clay, mud, gravel, etc also ..... draw your own conclusions!

Re; Tippman - 135k??? Wow, you are either really kind or keep them until they are bald! I changed mine at 60k or thereabouts with 5mm tread depth left. They are safer and more effective with more tread depth and less prone to punctures, so the 3 cents per kilometre seemed like money well spent!

They are a great tyre in my size (265/75/16 i think) and on my car. Different sizes and vehicles can respond differently. I would guess they would perform just as well in your size on your car. Sand has never been a problem and they are the best AT I have ever had on the road.

I ran these tyres at 40psi, which on the road is fine but off road, on sand or gravel I find running at 25psi is better, otherwise it can be a little light on corners at speed.
In day to day driving I have never felt the car out of control with steering or grip.

Cannot comment. Have only experienced them on Prado and never had steering issues. Duellers (694) is as good as the second best option though, so if you have also liked them maybe better the devil you know.

Well just bought 5 tyres 3 days ago after driving to work and back pulling to the left and vibration 100 /105 took back redid wheel alignment re balance front now runs straight BUT has a vibration at different speeds and seems to handle different so i nave full brake refit this week then have wheel alignment and see makes any difference see what happens but so far not happy with tyres so far

I'm no expert Shane. I know the total circumference dictates the speedo calibration issues, so it all depends on the width versus profile when applied to the increased rim size. www.pirelli.com will show you the size options available in the Scorpion, but I would suggest a quick call to a tyre mob to ask the conversion from your standard rim/tyre sizing to 20's. I would think you would need to be very wide and a very low profile to even go close........I would think maybe with 20's you won't see much dirt so best bet would be performance street tyres(?)

I have riden in both a hilux and a colorado with 18 inch wheels and the ride was terrible. Typical of low ptofilr tired on a 4x4 i guess. Good luck
