What is the difference between Pirelli Scorpion A/S and a Pirelli Scorpion All Season Plus?

Hi Don,

I have tried to copy a link but it's not working. Apparently they are the exact same tyre with the "plus" indicating that there are a few specific sizes that are for the OEM market. Certain sizes for the Amarok with 19 inch alloys, Land Rover Evoque and Volvo XC60. So I'm thinking as I replaced with Pirelli's that aren't an OEM size, I have just received the standard "All Season" variety.
I got this information from tirerack.com.

hope this helps.

I have a Holden Colorado 4X4 crew cab ute. I do approximately 300kms of highway driving per week and often go beach driving so need a tyre that is suited to both. Just wondering how people far with this tyre or if anyone knows of a tyre more suited to my needs. Any info/advice is greatly appreciated!

We have a 20015 toyato landcruiser sahara, have been recommended to put scorpion verde all season tyres on. We tow a 21ft caravan. We dont do off roading, but dont want noisy or rough ride. Are these what we should get? Thanks

Hi, that is an interesting question. A landcruiser is a much heavier vehicle especially with a 21ft van. So far the tyres are performing well on my Forester for general and highway driving. They are not noisy compared with the Nitto brand I replaced. I would be checking the load recommendations for the Pirelli tyres.

Agree with the above, check the load rating. I also run the Pirelli Scorpion ATR on my V6 VW Amarok. Great road Tyre and will give you that bit of grip on dirt and grass in caravan parks etc with the van.

Hi mate, just wondering if you went with the Pirellis? I have the same vehicle setup as you and looking at these tyres. Do you have any feedback on them so far? Cheers Wayne

Hi there. I have the exact same car and have recently fitted these Pirelli's. They are just as good the original factory fitted Continentals (sounds like that's what you have on now?). My original Continentals also only lasted about 30,000km. I then fitted Bridgestone Dueler HT's, which lasted about 40,000km.

I don't know how long the Pirelli's will last, but they do have a very good tread wear rating of 600 (look up UTQG in Wikipedia if you need more info), so they should last pretty well.

That said the Pathfinders are a pretty heavy vehicle, so if you get anything more than 40,000km out of any tyres you would be doing well.

I drive a Murano which is not quite as heavy, but managed to get about 65,000kms out of tyres with a treat wear rating of 600.

Try switching your Pathfinder 4WD system to 2WD or auto mode, as driving wheels tend to wear tyres quicker, particularly the front wheels as there is steering stresses as well.

I would suggest increasing your tyre pressure beyond what is displayed on the tyre placard of your Pathfinder, as long as the pressure is within the maximum rating of the tyre. This will reduce tyre sidewall flex (helping reduce heat generated and wear a little) and reduce rolling resistance (helping fuel economy slightly), but will make your vehicle ride firmer. This may not be a bad thing as it may also improve emergency braking and steering characteristics.

A lot of tyres for SUVs and 4x4s have a maximum pressure rating around 40 PSI. This can vary based on the load/speed rating and thread depth of the tyre. Suggesting 38 PSI for the tyre pressures of most SUVs /4x4s. Nitrogen inflation is also an option but is a bit of taboo with the nay sayers. From my experience, it has rectified excessive tyre pressure leaks (it tends to leak out slower from the tyres/rims), while also lowering tyre temperatures over long distance drives. The biggest benefit with nitrogen inflation is likely to be with frequent heavy towing, as this is a high stress condition on the tyres.

Manufacturers tend to set placard pressure recommendations based on comfort (softer ride). Keep in mind that high stress on the tyres ( heavy towing, long range driving on winding roads, etc) will cause the tyres to heat up more and increase the tyre pressures as you drive....keep this in mind when increasing tyre pressures as the tyres can increase about 2-3 PSI (under higher stress conditions) while driving. Also, manufacturers generally specify a lower pressure on the rear tyres (when not towing).... better if pressures are the same all around.

To prolong tyre life as well, it is suggested that tyres are rotated and balanced every 10,000kms, to get more even wear on the tyres. Do the wheel alignment along with this rotation as it will correct any uneven pulling in the steering, particularly with driving wheels.

Finally, review driving style. Frequent heavy acceleration, braking and steering puts more stress on the tyres. If the edge of the tyres look scuffed compared to the centre of the tyres, it is likely that the vehicle is either being pushed hard around the corners, or there is a wheel alignment issue.

Good (and even) tyre pressures, along with regular wheel alighnments should extend tyre life overall.

Thanks for all the info I did get the pirellis and couldn’t be happier they are wearing much better after 12 months than the continentals and much nicer ride. I spoke to the guys that fitted them they also recommended higher pressure and have had them rotated and balanced as they recommended.

I've got them on my land cruiser they are very quiet and good in the hills due to a stiffer side wall I find my car car doesn't roll as much through the hills when cornering
I did stake one on some roadkill the other week just make sure you drop the tyre pressures down on dirt roads Bridgestone do a new 697 which looks good also

On a Jeep Grand Cherokee 265/60/65. Just replaced original worn down Michelin Latitudes at 72,000 with Pirelli Scorpion Verde all season because Michellin latitudes now obsolete and replaced with Michellin Primacy.
Outcome with 6,000 K on the Pirelle: great for road noise, excellent in wet, slightly stiffener response through steering, tread wear to date excellent running at 38 psi.
Great value as Pirelli are breaking into the SUV crossover Tyre market bought 4 @ $275 with $100 cash back from Pirelli.

Hi, I have a RX330 Lexus - and need snow tyres. I was told to either get a nokian snow tyre (which is very expensive) or to get the all season scorpion verde. I am not sure what to do. We go up and down to the snow about 10 times over 3 months. I need something that grips better as we were sliding a bit the other week. Is the Scorpion Verde a good enough snow tyre???

Cam

Hi Tania the Nokian is designed more for snow so will work better in snow. The scorpion is a road tyre that works in the snow. If your based in Australia and go to the snow 10 times a season I can't se any use in the Nokian as you have to carry and use snow chains by law when required. I've been going to the snow for 30 years using all types of cars and never got a snow tyre as they are to limited on all other surfaces and don't change the required use of chains.
