Rheem Stellar working ok for me
I am surprised by all the issues mentioned in this forum. Looks like some are installation issues rather than product issues. I have had my unit since 1999 and only had 2 service calls - both to replace the pilot light thingie (same issue I have with my gas ducted heater). I only came to this forum to research hot water alternatives for a friend, and the continuous flow Bosch & Rinnai look good for domestic situations. Hope you get your issues sorted out :)

Not very happy
Bad gurgling sounds, like knocking. Plumber says on phone could be calcification, will check anodes. Thought the idea of anodes was to attract the calcification first. Surprised to find - no anodes, but tank is heavily calcified. So instead of replacing a $100 anode I need to replace a $600 tank.
With other parts $800 so may as well get another machine.
Only 6 years old : ( Tank has a 10 year warranty but not against calcification of course.
New machine buy and install price - $1800 - depressing...

REPLACEMENT ANODES AFTER LESS THAN 4 YEARS
I was very surprised to find my Rheem Stellar Gas Domestic Outdoor Water Heater needed its anodes replacing after less than 4 years. The suggested time (as written in my booklet) says 10 years but could be less depending on the type of water etc. But still, that would be approx. 7 years before I would have needed to replace the sacrificial anodes. Looking on line at the new revised booklet put out by Rheem I see they have changed the amount of time to 5 years. Hope Rheem can give me a proper explanation.

Appalling
Having the mentioned above gas heater for less than 2 years now and I had to change the thermostat twice and is now leaking water. I was told that there is a 10 YEAR WARRANTY and both the thermostat and the leak are now covered by the warranty. The customer service is terrible, the warranty is useless and am completely disgusted especially when I must replace my hot water system now! There service is so pathetic that in order to send someone to even have a look at your machine they charge $148 for the first 1/2 hour then a extra $30 for every 1...Read more

Rheem stellar caught fire!
Recently purchased a rheem stellar as recommended by the installer. It is only 2 weeks old and it caught fire. Lucky was I was out hanging the clothes when I saw smoke (more than usual) coming from the unit. I went to inspect and saw that the side caught fire and melted a hole through it where the fire was present. It also melted the plastic cover on the front. I turned off the gas and water to the unit and also the gas main to the house. I put the hose on it and I thought I put the fire out. I told my wife and lucky she inspected it and she sa...Read more
id that there was fire still present under the unit. More smoke was coming out from it. I immediately called the fire department and they came within 10min. They put the fire out by busting open the top and soaking the unit with water. Tried calling the company that installed the unit but it seems like they are closed. Will call them tomorrow and hopefully they can install something else and not a rheem. The fire dept will file a report on the unit.1 comment

Problem solved
I have had 2 Rheem Stellar 'explosions' this year. The first time, my 2 year old Rheem was replaced under warranty. The second time (six months later), the matter was properly investigated by Rheem and my gas company and found to be caused by faulty gas flow/leak/water in the gas pipe underground leading to the Rheem.
The explosions were extremely scary and on both occasions I called the fire brigade who arrived in minutes and dealt with the problem - put out fire, turned off gas etc. Had I not been at home, I expect the consequences could h...Read more
ave been bad. On both occasions, my call to the Rheem service centre was dealt with very poorly - casually/operationally. There was NO sense of urgency and I was told a technician would be sent in 2 days time. Potentially I would be without hot water for many days (and was for 4 days the first time around). The second time around, I called Rheem back twice the next day and eventually spoke to Marie who quickly recognised that this was an important situation and passed my call on to her manager. From then on, everything was dealt with very efficiently - from sending a technician around within an hour, involving my gas company, calls to me explaining the trouble shooting process and solution. As it turned out, the problem was with the gas flow which I needed to get a plumber to fix and I hope now to have no further problems. It's a pity that the first time this happened, it wasn't investigated as I expect the second incident could've been prevented. Special thanks to Marie who recognised the problem and Richard who provided absolutely outstanding follow up service. Eventual follow up service was great. Unit does work well! Do your research before purchasing this system
After hearing a massive ‘boom’ from outside our house (at 4pm yesterday – a Saturday), I found the Rheem gas hot water system (less than 2 ½ years old) had experienced some sort of explosion. The top of the system had popped open, there appeared to be some sort of insulation fibres sticking out from the top, a side valve and piping had buckled outwards and there was a strong burning smell surrounding the entire area. A series of incredibly frustrating calls to the Rheem service centre followed. For what I consider to be an incredibly serious ev...Read more
ent Rheem service centre staff advised to “try and turn off a valve on the unit” and they would try and get a technician out on Tuesday. And then any replacement of the unit would be a few days after that. I was shocked and appalled that there were A) no technicians on call and available to come to the property for such a serious system failure, and B) that there wasn’t even a technician who could provide qualified advice over the phone. The service centre supervisor advised that she had tried to call a few technicians but no one had answered and she “wouldn’t continue trying to contact anyone”. I told the service centre staff that I was increasingly alarmed at the safety of having such an unstable system still ‘on’ and not knowing if there was any potential for another explosion. The service centre manager advised that I could call an independent technician, but this would be at my own cost and would not be reimbursed by Rheem even if the system was found to be faulty. I asked the service centre staff to put all of their advice regarding what to do with the system in writing (as I considered it to be both dangerous and irresponsible advice), but they refused. This of course reinforced my view that the service centre staff were not qualified to provide such advice, and were totally disinterested in customer safety. The service centre staff are due to call “sometime” on Monday, however all of their technicians are apparently fully booked that day (and from reading the reviews below it appears Rheem have a serious product reliability issue). At 9 months pregnant and having faced a scary situation yesterday I am not looking forward to going a week with no hot water while dealing with a bureaucratic and uncaring company such as Rheem. As a side note if this happens to anyone else call your gas provider as when I called them they realised the seriousness of the situation and had someone out to the property within the hour to shut off the gas line to the property. Update: a senior technician came to my property on Monday and worked to get my system repaired and review the safety of the system. For serious issues with your Rheem systems it is my understanding that (even after-hours) you should be able to speak to a technician.1 comment

Not happy with Rheem
I installed a new Rheem Stellar 330 exactly 3 yrs and 3 weeks ago. 6 weeks ago the pilot light started to go out inexplexibly and now it will not light at all. After 2 emails and several calls having to queue in the phone system, warranty only covers tank not parts or labour beyond 12 months. $143 for 30 mins and $28 per 15 mins thereafter plus parts. Is that the expected life of the parts of a Rheem. What use it the tank if the rest of it fails seriously !!!! Will never buy Rheem again!!! 3 yrs is a ridiculously short life expectancy for any part of hot water system.
Useless warranty

Do not buy from Rheem!
Bought an investment property (unit), had the original hot water system from 16 years prior. It started to fail (fair enough, had a good life), so I replaced it. I only called Rheem because they owned the previous system, and thought "wow it lasted 16 years, even if I get half that, that's good". Purchased a system, which was a bit of a stuff around because the guy had to come, leave, come again and anytime between 8am and 4pm (pathetic). After 13 months, this thing has failed, just called Rheem, and their response was, if its a system issue it...Read more
s covered, but if its parts you have to pay per 15mins!!! + parts. Are the parts not part of the system, therefore the system has failed? Exact words: "sometimes they last a long time, sometimes they don't"...Asked when can they get someone out, but they'll be there anytime between 8am - 4pm on the day. These people can't even book a time slot, even a rough time! Keep in mind I was pleasant on the phone, not a pr*#k, so she wasn't trying to stick it to me, this is just common business for them. Do not buy a unit from Rheem, go with another provider, trust me. I can see me having a lot of issues with this system, and their service. I know have to go a week without hot water. System fails after 1 year, and the customer service is horrible1 comment

Design Deficiency of Rheem Stellar 360
Rheem Stellar 360 Natural Gas Storage Tank is OK for up to 8 years but the design is not supporting long time use. After 8 years the residue of Anodes and other scale deposit and there is no outlet to empty all the water to clean then storage tank. Great Service - constant problems
I purchased a townhouse that had a 5 year old stellar.
One morning I had found the covers blown off after a sever storm ( top cover and facing cover).
2 weeks later I heard a boom and went outside to find it in pieces on my lawn.
I called rheem and they sent someone out next day under warranty as I explained I had a pregnant wife. They replaced it that day and the technician worked overtime because my wife was 38 weeks pregnant - we did not ask him to do this.

Stellar 360 Problems
When the system is working, you couldn't ask for anything better in the way of a hot water supply. Never having a gas supplied hot water system before, i was unsure what to expect...BUT, when it's bad, it's really bad. We have had the Rheem service crew out 4 times, in the last month, fixing the same problem. And once again its gone down 2 of those times over a holiday weekend, with no call-out even thou a after hours service is mentioned. All you get is an answer service, who returns your call, then books a serviceman.
Works well when it's going.

Excellent
Requires a stop and a mixer valve to be installed. A very satisfactory product. When getting a quote, insist that every item and pipe is specified. I replaced a 320 litre electric off peak heater of which I needed 3 in 12 years. Supplied and fitted by AGL Blacktown.
Great product and warranty, requires no electrical supply when changing from electricity, small and silent, external, requires no electrical wires.
Requires a plumber (the weak link), mine did not have a spanner and did it all with a shifter, banging the handle repeatedly into the heater wall by turning a nut!
