No your misunderstanding my question.
When the power came on we never had to do anything it automatically resumed it’s working order.
My question was if there is no electricity does the gas booster work or is it normal to have no hot water.

I have a Rinnai Sunmaster Flat Plate system installed in 1999.
What is the life expectancy of this system

Hi Nick.F,

Thanks for the question, in 1999 when your unit was installed Rinnai offered a 5 year warranty on the Sunmaster tank. However, Rinnai Australia are committed to continuous improvement and through innovation have enhanced the efficiency of the Sunmaster Flat Plate System which has sanctioned an extension of the warranty from 5 to 10 years on the Sunmaster tank.

If you are having trouble with your unit we would recommend booking a service call. Please refer to our website with the following link https://www.rinnai.com.au/support-resources/online-service-booking.

That does not really answer my question!
The unit is currently working fine, what I am asking is how long would you expect the unit to last! Ie life expectancy.

Rinnai
Rinnai A.Rinnai

Hi Nick.F,

We cannot provide an exact age for life expectancy, due to a number of factors. Actual life can be impacted by water quality, usage and improper maintenance.

It is recommended that our customers regularly service their products to ensure optimal operation.

Sunmaster Evacuated Tube System

Good Morning, we had this unit installed in our new build by our plumber in July last year (2018). Our gas bill is astronimcal all year round, $700 after discount during winter and around $400 during summer when the Hydronic isnt running. Is this normal as the only other gas device we use during summer would be the cooktop two or three nights a week? We have noticed the instantaneous running a lot, even during summer.

our rinnai sunmaster solar hot water system is leaking from the outlet when i turn off the water supply on unit it continues to leak, however when i turn mains off it stops. Why isn't the valve on the hot water unit turning off water ?

Richard L

Where is the leak? I have 2 valves on the storage unit. One on the supply side and one on the discharge side. If you only turn off the one on the discharge side the unit will still be under pressure and might leak. In any event sounds like you need a plumber.

Sunmaster Range

I have a Sunmaster hot water unit. I think the frost valve at rooftop solar panels is leaking water into the gutter drain pipes. Have organized service call from Rinnai but might be many days before someone is able to come. Meanwhile, is it safe for me to turn off power to the solar pump to stop the leak, relying on gas only to heat the water? Will doing this damage the panels?
Thank you.

2 answers
Richard
Richard

I wouldn’t expect any water leakage from the rooftop unit. You would need confirmation from Rinnai about turning off the power to the circulating pump. I doubt turning off the pump will stop the leak

Rinnai
Rinnai A.Rinnai

Thanks for the question Alex, turning off the pump will not stop the valves from leaking and may expose the unit to damage as you would be turning off the automatic frost protection for the unit. If you have not had the technician attend, please let us know and we will follow up for you.

We have a 315lt evacuated gas boosted unit. Every time you turn the tap on the gas boost starts up and keeps running. I could understand this first thing in the morning after a cold night but today was 21° and sunny for 95% of the day although with a cool wind. Our panels face north.
Why is it doing this we have just had a sensor at the tubes replaced. The system is only 6 months old.

They installed a Rinnai sunmaster system 6 weeks ago.every week a technician has to come and fix it as i have no hot water. They fix a valve or whatever and it works for 3 or 4 days and then goes cold .this has gone on for 6 weeks.
I am disgusted with this installation. I feel i have had a lemon installed.

Hello Deidre .. If I were in your situation, speak directly to the installation company, they have the consumer rights to fix your problem. Mention that if the situation is not resolved within say 7 days, you will contact Consumer Affairs in your State. In the mean time I would contact Consumer Affairs anyway and get their view and information. I would also contact Rinnai both by email (written record) and by Phone (they have a consumer line). Advise them of your ongoing issues and let them know of the installers inaction. Advise the installation company that you are thru talking, and immediate action is required to permanently fix you system. Consumer Affairs will advise of the next steps to take. A few sparks flying will get the message across and will get you an outcome.
Good luck

Geoff. Rinnai have come everyweek to fix the solar heater. Each time I think that it is fixed now. Then for 4 days I have hot water and then luke warm water the next day. This has happened every week since they installed it on 12 th March.last Friday when it failed again technician said he had put a new sensor on the roof tubes. That was 2 days ago and I have had hot water for two days now. We will see.

Sunmaster Flat Plate System

Is it ok to leave power off to hot unit when house is empty can this damage panels on roof

1 answer
Rinnai
Rinnai A.Rinnai

Thank you for the question Gary Pond.
TURNING OFF THE WATER HEATING SYSTEM
If you plan to be away for only a few nights, we suggest you leave the water heating system switched on. If it is
necessary to switch off the water heater, do so as outlined below:
Electric Boosted Systems
• Switch off the electrical supply to the supplementary heating element. The switch is usually marked and
located in the electricity meter box of the dwelling.
• Switch off the electric supply to the solar controller and pump.
Gas Boosted systems
• Switch off the electric supply to the gas booster.
• Switch off the electric supply to the solar controller and pump.
IMPORTANT
Turning off power to the solar controller will prevent operation of the pumped water circulation
used in low temperature mode. (See page “Frost Protection Mode” on page 22 for details). This
may be required for warranty on the solar collectors. Refer to the supplied warranty booklet.
Please contact our Technical help desk if you require further assistance on 1300 555 545 option 3.

Thanks,
Rinnai Australia.

Sunmaster Range

We have a a Sunmaster 20 that has been problematic in two ways. the first is that since owing our property "every" year the side valve blows out due to cold weather - at a repair cost of $300 each time I was told by Rinnai Tech Service that these units are very robust and should not be having this issue, but here we are with these problems.
The second issue is that the unit in its 5th year of service is now actually blowing the main circuit breaker of the property causing total power failure, once again I was assured that the unit is not at fault but more likely the property wiring - the property is 5 years old, when the S20 is disconnected there is not issue and has been checked by a qualified electrician. Is this S20 actually "fit for purpose" in Australia given its Japanese heritage? The "head in the sand" phenomenon seems to be becoming more and more prolific - and the reply of "we never have these problems" is becoming too common.

Sunmaster Evacuated Tube System

Just installed a evac tube sun master electric boost about a month ago. Today we have had very loud banging noises in the roof. And I also heard the base unit gurgle a few times. The banging noise tends to happen when I’ve been using the hot water. It has been a warm day (prob about 28) but this is nothing compared with our summer temps to come(high 30’s and low 40s) what could the problem be?

Hello CJ1 - I'm sorry to hear about the problems. Have you contacted Rinnai or the plumber who installed it? Both the product and the installation work should be well truly covered by warranty. I am no expert in these matters but it sounds like there's an issue with the gas booster but also the part of the system that regulates the tank between solar heated water stored and the gas booster. While our system was being investigated we had to use just the booster and still managed to have enough useable hot water. I think it helps to ensure your plumber is accredited with Rinnai as they would know what to look for. The plumbers that came to install our updated system told me that most problems with this or any system related to them not being installed properly in the first place. I used the Rinnai helpline and while there was a bit of a wait, they helped. I'm not sure I can help any further. I can say though several months down the track, the system we have has been working very well. Best of luck.

We have had 2 do this in 9 years. First replaced under warranty (still cost us over $400 installation). Second not covered. No advice from Rinnai as to why 2 units have died in 9 years. They they dont want to talk to us - not interested - just keep repeating its out of warranty (ours had 5 years. Same unit now has 10). House is connected to mains water, neighbours not having any issues with their water, not a hard water area, new house, etc.
We have a Thermann being installed right now as we speak and to be honest Ill be happy if I never have to deal with Rinnai again.
