MTD/Rover 560 pro cut with 910 engine - - yuch
I swore 10 years ago i would never buy another Rover 560 Pro Cut; but in a weak moment I purchased the all new MTD version with the 910 motor. The drive mechanism is still the same load rubbish it always was nut now it has this stupid engine cut out for OH&S instead of a blade brake like the new Honda. It still clogs up too easily and there is no discharge chute available, As a contractor with some 15 years experience I still have and use my 11 year old Honda 216d and it is more reliable than the Rover BY FAR. only saving graces of the 560 are its mulching ability and the new 910 engine which SEEMS to be much easier to start than that heap of rubbish from B&S which first powered the 560 in around 2000. SO if you want a reliable self propelled mower get the Honda - if you are concerned about price get Chinese knock on and be prepared to chuck it out ofter of years commercial use. Personally I'll pay the the money for the real deal every day. I finally took my "new" Rover/MTD 560/910 back to the selling when it's left hand drive wheel fell off and told them It's a load of rubbish which I never want to see again. I would rather write off the purchase price than put up with it's stupid drive system and other weaknesses. Everything is garbage these days
I have owned many Rovers over the years, used in contractor environment. I remember running these mowers into the ground. I had one that was consistently used for 10 years or more before it started blowing oil smoke. I then owned 2 of these pro cuts and under pressure they both died. I than went to the more expensive Honda HRU216, to which i am extremely satified with the motor and gearbox but everything else is garbage.

a Rover base, with a Honda motor and gearbox. Wheels on both are weak for contractor mowers, Handlebars on ther Honda have snapped 3 times in a couple years. While on the job this is very annoying time consuming, frustrating and costly. Very thin metal, Honda catch chutes are pitiful, when mowing heavy grass, Rover excel in this area by far. Catching grass is what the customer wants. The Honda blades are pathetic and very costly, with down time. The clutch on the Rover is bad and the motor can kill your arm if you need to start it, compared to the Honda, that just starts, mostly with one pull. The drive cable for the Honda breaks all the time. The disc blade D spacers on the Honda need to be the same as the Rover and stamped to the bolt shape. Have replaced disc already because of wear from bolts. Overall the rover cuts nicely but in heavy conditions, there is no way to keep revs up but slow speed, unless you push. Both being heavy mowers, this would be backbreaking for a lot of people. Handlebars on the Rover, to me sat nicely when you got used to the height. Honda sit far too low in my opinion. The mulch plug on the Honda is far superior. I haven't used the new Rovers but can imagine that they a cheaply made now. I paid more then $1200 for mine and now they are $800 to $900 depending on motor. I like the idea of 8hp Kohler but whether it actually is and can handle being bogged down is another story. The drive belt on the Rovers is a poor design and gets caught up with grass. In the old days it was brilliant but because of the poor quality stuff we get these days, i imagine this belt would just slip all the time. I don't know about anyone else here but i would rather pay a bit more than to have to go to the repair shop all the time. I am sick of faults that you have no choice but to repair, leaving half a yard etc. Good deck air flow and chute Poor clutch, no avenue for keeping revs up while slowing speed. Going back to the honda
Have owned it for 7 months, been in shop 3 times.All with problems wiyh the drive belt. Which is not good for a contractor. Would not buy another rover.Stay away from belt driven self propelleds.With the money you spend it's not worth it, would rather spend the few hundred dollars more and get a reliable mower.
Good cut. Good in wet weather as grass goes into catcher but that's it

Don't waste your money.......
Every thing has broken on this mower . Been a contractor for 8 years now and this would have to be the worst mower I have ever got . You would think for $1000 aus you would get a lot more .
It was back to the shop 7 times in 14 weeks please don't waste your money on The new rover there not made like they used to be
Fell apart and rover will not give me a refund or replace it they said they will keep fixing it up for me at no cost but the down time without that mower is no good to me . No mower no money .

ver tension drive cable-not always the drive problem,use inox lanoline lubricant regularly (fortnightly) on rear wheel bearings, drive cogs,drive chain and spray down from top of cables.replace drive axle roll pin with high tensile bolt and lock nut and you have a brilliant all round mowerYeah i used to do all of that but the new ones from about 2007 are just garbage and getting worse.

Best all round contractors mower on the market for money spent
22 inch cut, wide drive wheels for better traction and weight distribution with less turf marking in wet conditions,very powerful easy start briggs and stratton engine-no choke or priming, best catching mower in wet conditions, quiet exhaust in comparison to honda, much lighter and easier to maneuver. t.We have a unique grass deflection system fitted on our rovers to eliminate the need to clean out debris from inside the rear drive wheels at all.Keep multi holed metal vacuum screen in catcher clean with wire brush for best results when catching grass, particularly when wet Less expensive than some other brands at under $1000 Requires regular basic maintenance for best ongoing results..a can of inox for cables and drive components is a must1 comment
Sorry mate but the wheels are no better or wider than other real commercial mowers - but it weighs a tonne compared to the honda.

Does a great job, nice finish to the lawn
Poor quality. Within 6 months of ownership, drive cable broke, catcher handle broke, rear wheels spin inside tyres, roll pin through drive axle broke, rear wheel bearings collapsed, original star washers which hold the wheels on kept working loose - replacements hold good, and blades are expensive

great machine, has nice wide wheels for muddy conditions,omly real downside for contractors is the small fuel tank,catches great in wet conditions
flail blades last 2-3 mths,easy start with honda,
small fueltank,drive pulley wears as gets grass all around it

you cannot be talking about the 560 - the fuel tank is fine as is the new engine, mulching and cutting width; but the rest is crap

3 year old XDS46 self propelled mower which has cost me almost twicw as much of the purchase price in repairs - back turning wheel, drive belt (3 times) and fuel line._Never again Rover!!!
