May I suggest you do as I did and throw them out. Too much of risk of injury waiting to happen should they spill on you with hot coffee...ouch!

Mum thought that do until I showed her that you need to get the little notch under lid to line with hole..just make sure it’s twisted all the way shut...she was not twisting it shut enough and thought she was doing it right..it just goes to the end if you look at the cup well you can see the bump.

Yes the lid is difficult to clean. I've been cleaning the lid in the sink, with the other dishes, in hot water with detergent. Then rinsing it under the hot tap. It does get water inside it, but on the underside there is a grey rubber triangle which seals the sipping hole. This can be pulled out using something blunt, so as not to damage it - I use the end of the handle of a tea spoon. Insert the teaspoon handle tip inside the hole at the larger end, and wiggle the grey rubber strip out. The rubber triangle stays attached to the middle of the lid, but once the seal end is out, there is a bigger gap and water inside the lid can drain out. I leave the lid on its side to dry out completely, then push the rubber seal firmly back in place before using it again. If the water inside the lid does not dry out, in winter or if I need to use the cup soon after, then rinsing it in a water/alcohol (ie, metholated spirits) 50/50 mixture at the end before drying will speed up the process. But make sure the alcohol is completely evaporated before sealing the lid back together and reusing the cup.

I was able to separate the two parts of the cap by warming the whole thing in hot water and then twisting the top so that it was not locked in either the open or closed position. If you pull it apart a little you can insert a butterknife or the end of a teaspoon between them. I then slid this around to where the top was caught under a ridge of the bottom part and levered it out so that it was not under the ridge anymore. I worked my way around so that it was separated completely.
To put it back together just align the two pieces and push them together. This required a little bit of force (maybe cause everything had cooled down by then) but it just popped right back on.

I'd like to know to,. if the twist top itself can come apart for cleaning as sometimes liquid (coffee/tea) does get into the top area of the lid

Sistema bottles and cup lids can seem difficult, or impossible to open and clean. I certainly faced this issue, but I've done a bit of research and was able to clean my kids' bottle covers plus my Twist n Sip Tea travel cup last night.
This video from Sistema provided some guidance http://sistemaplastics.com/about/videos/#155486296

I'm not too strong, so couldn't pry them apart with my own hands as the video instructs. Here's what I did:

Pour some boiling water in a bowl
Put the bottle & tea cup covers in the bowl (upside down)
Let them sit there for about 30 secs - 1 minute
Scooped them out with a spoon
Then use a spoon to pry the covers apart (for the tea cup cover, insert the spoon around the area where the cover has the those grooves, so basically once the pins(?) are separated from the groove, it's easy to open the lid.
Hand wash or place in the dishwasher
Click the covers back together after the wash.

I pull my twist n sip coffee cup apart including the lid.

If you take off the lid and then sort of twist it half way, you should be able to pull it apart without a problem.
