Fan stopped working today. Judging from the other reviews this is a common fault.
Like everyone else I expected a lot more from this product.

Fan stopped working after 3 years
The fan won't turn on even though all the switches seem to work fine. I removed the range hood and manually turned the fan. When the fan is turning manually the fan works. It appears it cannot start the fan from a standstill. I am extremely disappointed given the expense spent on a quality product. I will return to Bosch as my product of choice.

Not Happy
Smeg Rangehood installed December last year, makes a lot of noise but doesn’t do anything. Contacted Masterton Homes who installed it and was told, “You got what you asked for” brilliant answer, no help no offer to check it, well I do hope my Oven and Dishwasher also Smeg last the distance. So in the meantime I am left with no Rangehood.
Purchased in December 2021.

Disappointed
Disappointed because we expected better longevity with SMEG. Looks like there is a 5 year limit on these. Mine was installed around June 2013. So approximately 5 1/2 years before it started to fail. Buttons started to play up doing different things or not responding... after a few month, now no response at all. We know it is out of warranty. I emailed Smeg to get an idea of prices for parts but they referred me to a contractor at $165 visit for first 1/2hr to find out what is wrong. This unit cost $760 before installation.
Purchased in May 2021 at Harvey Norman for $760.00.

Fan fell off after 4 years.
After much research we spent the considerable sum for this unit. When it arrived, it appeared to be a return because the box had been opened, the plastic wrap was half pealed off, and the filters had multiple dents. Once Smeg decided it wasn't their supply chain problem they didn't care. After a month ignoring us, we decided all we could do was install it.
I provide this info, a; because we were very disappointed with the service, and b; because it may be the reason for our problems now!
Now, after four years of mild domestic use, the fan...Read more
mounts have fallen off!. I have video of the fan now wobbling more than a cm inside the housing. Inspecting the unit showed the screws are loose. Unfortunately, the whole fan mount wobbles inside the electric motor casing. When the fan fell off, I was out of the room and the motor was powered but stopped for a couple of minutes. The authorised repair man noted the loose screw thread was stripped inside of the motor and glued it back in. So my $1300 rangehood had to have its screws glued in! I am left to wonder what impact the period the motor was on without being cooled by the fan will be, with virtually no recourse throughout the whole sorry saga. So, either we did get a reconditioned one at full price, or they make poor quality products, where screws fall off. I would accept fair ware and tear to be electric motor brushes wearing out, not the structure of the unit collapsing!1 comment

Rangehood not working
Hi Smeg my Rangehood has stopped working after 6 years of having purchased it seems like i have the same problem as the persons above . Wanting to know if this will be a ongoing issue with this model
Lights and fan work sporadically
Turn the light switch on and fan comes on vise versa
I am happy with the Rangehood since buying it as its strong suction and have never had a problem with it since installing it .
Not to impressed with the life span of a $1500 unit
My old house had a cheap unit that was 15 years old

Our SMEG SA5502X90 is 4.5 years old having being installed during a kitchen renovation at that time. During the following years the buttons began to do different things and slowly got worse. At some stages we thought the unit was dead, but then later it would come back to life. The behaviour was quite bizarre. After 4.5 years we were at our wits end. We thought the solution would be to replace the unit. Three weeks ago our SMEG dishwasher (same age) also suffered a minor problem with a flow switch. At this stage we could have simply vent...Read more
ed our frustration on a forum such as this, but instead decide to make a direct contact to SMEG to ask if they could do anything to help. The response from SMEG was immediate and exemplary. They arranged for a technician to visit and make the necessary repairs. This was done promptly. The repairs were straight forward and not difficult involving the ribbon cable and PCU. The range hood was not at end of life. Similarly the dishwasher flow switch was a simple repair. All was completed within 1.5 hours. The main issue with the range hood was the ribbon cable. This is an essential part of having a slide out range hood with buttons at the front. Daniel took great care to lay out the ribbon cable properly to avoid future issues. Both appliances are now working perfectly, and we are extremely pleased. It is so good having the units working properly again. The response from SMEG was immediate and professional. To Steve and Daniel, many thanks. This is greatly appreciated.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Totally Disappointed
We purchased the Smeg over the cheaper brands, in reliance of their "good name". We purchased the unit 22 July 2014. As soon as it was installed and plugged in at the wall outlet, we noticed a loud electrical hum when the unit was not in use, but thought nothing of it.
Fast forward to 11 February 2015, we were forced to log a warranty call as the unit became unresponsive. The light and fan switches didn't function correctly and the fan speed fluctuated dramatically for no apparent reason. The service technician replaced the PCB (circuit boa...Read more
rd) and said "good luck" with it on his way out the door. Here we are again 4 July 2017, the board is obviously fried again as the unit is now running by itself and the switches wont respond to any touches, we cant turn it off, on, up or down. The fan units rev uncontrollably and the lights flash like a disco strobe light. We believe this poses a serious FIRE HAZARD !! and have now resorted to unplugging it at the power point. How are we supposed to use the cooktop without a range hood? This is totally unacceptable to us and at this stage, we cannot recommend the purchase of any Smeg products as a result. We have contacted the Smeg national manager as suggested on this site and, we will update here on any response we receive.2 comments

Very Disappointed!!
I purchased this Smeg slideout range hood a few years ago and the fan has been working very well. Earlier this year I pressed the light button to turn it on. Both the on and off light button pressed back into their slot so it is now very difficult to use them. I have barely used the lights on the rangehood so there should not be a problem with wear and tear. This is very disappointing as I choose a smeg brand product thinking it would last longer than other brands.

Disappointed
We purchased our Smeg range hood 5 years ago. Spent a bit more believing it was better quality and would last longer. Disappointed that it has stopped working and now have the added expense of repairing it. Noticed a lot of others have had problems with this model and it has been discontinued.

Disappointed from day 1
We trusted the Smeg name but are totally disappointed. The first 18 mths we had to call twice for repairs. One year later another problem and now the rangehood is 4 yrs old and not working at all. Unfortunately I'm weary to buy the same brand again.
Dishwasher also has had problems.

Very disappointing unit
We bought this rangehood in September 2014 for our new house. We had been pleased with the Smeg telescopic rangehood in the old house where it had performed really well. We didn't buy an extended warranty. This unit has had numerous problems since it was installed. It started off being much noisier than the previous rangehood. The motor constantly hummed loudly and at one point it started blowing air instead of extracting it. Last week the extractor stopped working altogether, the rangehood still lights up but it doesn't do what it's supposed t...Read more
o, that is extract cooking odours. And, of course, the two year warranty period is over! Smeg don't brand their goods as cheap utilitarian products but this rangehood has performed far worse than a cheap product. From a consumer perspective this is extremely unsatisfactory. Why bother paying more for "quality" brands when they prove to be unreliable so quickly?1 comment

Rangehood exhaust not working but lights still functional. Purchased only 5 years ago. This is the second time we have had to get the rangehood fixed. Also disappointed with SMEG oven that has also had to be fixed recently after only having for 4 years. SMEG Induction cooktop is brilliant though. Am considering not buying SMEG products in the future.

I have been quoted $130 each for rangehood fans for P52/2 by a Smeg referred contractor. My concern is they also quoted $130 for 2 light assemblies (after charging $110 for a visit) when I change a globe and it works perfectly. Confidence in contractor is not high! Is the quoted price reasonable?
