Rethink customer service
We have the system now installed for 12 years and had it serviced at the recommended intervalls. We recently had our fuse jump out and I had to get up on the roof to see what it was as it was related to the booster. When i opened the plastic side, all I could see was corroded material which was leaking water and therefore made the fuse jump out. We contacted the solahart technician and he said that they serviced it every year, however because it was a cheaper model at the time that that kind of 'wear' was normal. They offered me to replace the unit with another one for $3997. You are kidding. My advice "Stay away from them".

Paid almost double the average price for a Solahart system thinking "you get what you pay for", how wrong was I, here I am looking at my second Christmas in three years with no hot water, now been fobbed off three times this time. Think I might start legal proceedings against them as it's still under warrenty and I've had enough. Solahart Midland, W.A. you suck, buyer beware.

COSTLY COLD WATER FROM THE SUN
After 5 years of expecting some sort of customer service from solahart I yet again just had another cold shower exactly what I was looking forward too after a long day.... Mind you it is almost summer & I do live on the far north coast of NSW the sun was shining on my panels for most of the day but unfortunately I was last of 3 people in the shower tonight. This is an every day occurrence as soon as the first bit of hot water gets used from the tank it starts to cool....We have tried time & time again to contact solahart head office to get som...Read more

h well' looks like you need another panel ' and left. the boss came over and offered a second-hand panel for $1000 plus installation plus crane hire. I told him to stick his Solahart where it would collect the most sunshine. I have been using the electric booster exclusively for the last 5-6 years. since i now receive electricity rebates on my bill being a pensioner and can not get installation rebates because i would be replacing solar by solar (even that it does not work!), I can not amortice the cost of a new system before i get interred. I will just replace the sacrificial element from time to time and the 'saving the planet' bit and solahart can go to hell. Shame really, I was one of the first users of solahart in Whyalla around 1975 and even there i had a problem when the glass of both panels shattered in mid-summer when a tiny cloud dumped a short shower on them. I did complain to solahart direct, but never received any answer at all. That should put a flea in the ear of any prospective customer. If you do get one, make sure you never buy a closed loop system, coolant cost is exorbitant. install and forget who knows? bad iinstallation, bad parts, insufficient knowhow by local plumbers4 comments

After sales service is non existent. Beware all those Canberrans installing them before Christmas! Two weeks ago we came back from 3 weeks holiday to no pressure in the hot water and are having great difficulty getting anyone to call back after 8 phone calls. A man did come out last weekend but did not know what was wrong and it still is not fixed. The heater was working very well until now.

My first Solahart was installed facing North as they needed to be in 1980, cost around $1,000 then, mate next door did the plumbing. I have just had it replaced, even though it was still working to about 70-80% efficiency after 32 years, but looked pretty dilapidated and had a few rust issues by then. Did absolutely no maintenance on it at all during that time, except for replacing one of the blow-off (or whatever they call it) valves myself a couple of years ago.

nstalled, is now at the back of the house where the wet area is, and facing West as required. This particular model will boil the tank apparently if faced North. It worked perfectly as soon as it was filled, with plenty of hot water from day one, even though it was not finished until just after midday. Even with two mostly cloudy day in a row, still plenty of hot water, and recovers unbelievably quickly, even a partly sunny afternoon is enough. As with my old one, I won't boost it at all unless I really have to, with a manual switch and pilot light as with the old one. All I can hope for, is that this one is as reliable as the old one. There's two of us in the house, I'm in Brisbane. Energy efficient, very reliable.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

These guys claim to have 59 approximate years experience building these things and I thought things from China didn't work, but the fact that these guys can't get a solar hot water system to work after 50 odd years does not auger well for their technical skills, especially under our Queensland sun. I have cleaned the panels to no avail.

You have to go thru Rheems for service. Their monopoly attitude will give you grief when warrantee's over. whatever you saved on your bill, you will put it back on to service and repair cost. Because their solar system parts aren't widely available, you won't have any other choice than contact them. And it will more likely to go off or require service every 12 months.
* Poor customer service thru out call centre to technition.
* Generate not enough hot water
* Some parts only last 12 months(according to their very "unfriendly" tech). so it won't save you money after all.

Whether you buy Edwards or Solarhart of this type of system, there is a bad experience you should be aware. Rheem is in charged of servicing any of these two brands and their service with this type of setup is extermely poor.

d fine, but I need hot water urgently. They only could arrange for service 3 days later. Do I have a choice? no, and this points to question about emergency I need hot water, but what emergency if you cant come out now to repair?. On Wednesday I waited the whole morning and it was fair weather, the service man didnt came until in the afternoon, and it started to rain and gave the obvious reasons he cant service. (I am actually fine at this point but the next thing just puts me off) He said I can do it on Friday, I mean WHAT? Cant you come back later or tomorrow? Nope he told me Friday. I said I am working on Friday it has to be afternoon. Friday morning someone called and said whether he could come, I personally got really to the boiling point, and told him that I have requested an afternoon appointment. Whats worse the hot water system decided to work suddenly and I told the serviceman that if he is coming down to say it is working now and charge me I would really go insane. Luckly this guy saved the company's image by letting the manager know what was happening and found out my system was still under warranty. He assured me that I wont be charged for anything and did the service. Overall I question about Rheem's services, is very poor imo. I personally feel that the tank on the roof setup is a bad recommendation. Go for solar hot water systems with tanks on the side so that even if rain they still can service and give you hot water. I dont think I ever buy this system again. By the way Product Review, if Solarhart is asking for my details, please feel free to give them, as I am not happy with them. thumbs down!1 comment

Don't buy Solahart!
I bought my Solahart system in September of 2008. It cost me a lot of money even with rebates so expected a good system in return.
The guys who installed the unit were pretty rough with their installation and this has been reinforced by 3 different plumbers that I asked to inspect the system.
The first inkling of trouble came with a general loss in efficiency of the system where I ended up having to put the electric booster on more often than I thought I should. The insulation on the tubing to the panels on my roof started to fall apart.

Aweful! Don't do it
I have never been so disappointed in anything, not hot enough, not enought hot water, cold by evening, you need twice the capacity of your old tank - but Solarhart don't tell you that. Wintertime you need a booster, but they don't tell you that either. Save yourself the stress, just don't do it. So disappointing, aweful system, saving money - what a joke, it costs you more if you actually want hot water.

It's ok
My husband and I have decided to install a Solarhart water heater instead of using gas water heater for cost saving purpose.
It turns out that the Solahart really can save water during summer time but be prepare to pay a big bill during winter time as most of the time you do not to use the electric booster to boost the hot water.
If you have a big household, my advice is do your research and whether is it really worth to install a solar water heater or gas water heater.
Save money during sunny day

Generally happy with unit which has been installed since Nov 2009. We are saving approx up to $50-$55 per quarter. Off peak 1 usage was typically 900 - 1200kwh using elec hot water, with solar hot water, off peak usage reduced to 130 - 500 kwh. Cloudy/rainy days during winter can mean we run low on hot water during the evening, so we may have to switch to off peak 2. Apparently the system is rated at only 200l on the heater element alone, even though the whole system is 300l. During sunny days there is plenty of hot water.
Cheaper electricity bills.
Can run low on hot water in the evenings during cloudy/rainy days. May have to switch to off peak 2. Installing without rebates would make it very expensive.

Solahart tanks do last from 20-30 years but the odd one will have a shorter life span due a manufacture problem but it is very rare and does happen to all hot water cylinders.
Stainless steel cylinders do have their limits and should only be used with good soft quality water otherwise water softeners and filters need to be fitted. Also check the strict warranty details of a stainless tank as there are conditions to be meet with in regards with water quality to be eligible for any warranty claims.

further to my review posted on 13th July 2009. I have received my first electricity bill after insatlling the solahart 302L. I have a saving of $33.82 for the quarter. Generally happy but we may look at other brands when we need to replace this one on advice of our plumber. He seems to think that the price of new units outstrips Sola-Harts reputation
Had a 300l system installed around 12 years now. Last year had leaking valves replaced- cost $600ish. Our system faces dead north and with only 2 users runs far too hot in summer so we cover the RHS collector with shade cloth in warm months(Perth,W.A.).One of the co-developers of the system installed it and told us to do this(prolongs system life he added), although a S/H tech seemed a bit evasive on this subject even when pushed about it???
They are a costly item, but we have recovered costs I suppose.

I originally wrote the earlier review (Feb. 09))having thought the tank had rusted from the outside in due to salt spray gaining access through the electrical wiring cover. This is how it appeared from the water leaking out when the tank was in-stu on the roof. However, once on the ground I removed the inspection plate as well as the sacrificial anode. The sacrificial anode showed negligible signs of corrosion (about 5-8%)after 8 years (reflects quality of local water supply)having originally been replaced (obviously uneccessarily)4 years after...Read more
purchase of the system in September 1997. On close inspection of the inside of the steel tank there appears to be a fist size area of rust and corrosion on the end of the tank, just below where the sacrificial anode entry point is. This is where the tank has leaked and it is highly unlikely to have been caused from the outside-in (as originally thought) due to the foam insulation around the outside of the tank in this area. Furthermore, there was a lot of sludge sitting on the bottom of the tank which I attribute to the corrosion of the sacrificial anodes. This is another minus in my opinion for this type of system. I have since replaced the tank with a stainless steel tank from another manufacturer. No inspections of the sacrificial anodes to pay for in future, no replacement sacrificial anodes. It will be interesting to see what life I get out of this new tank. Like other solar products it uses renewable energy. The tank didn't last the generally advertised 25 to 30 years. Mine lasted 11 years. The solar collectors however still appear okay.1 comment
