Hi there, my girlfriend and I are looking to purchase a policy with SCTI; however, my girlfriend a currently holding a temporary Graduate Visa; i.e. Australian resident for tax purpose but with NO Medicare Card. She does have a private health insurance policy with Medibank. Is she eligible for applying SCTI policy, as stated in your PDS Section A4 - "You can only get cover yunder this policy, if you are: ... c) on a visa or permit which allows you access to all publicly funded health and disability services in Australia and is valid until after your end date of insurance"?
Thank you,
Justin

Hi Justin,

Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately we don't have a policy that your girlfriend is eligible, as she isn't eligible for all publicly funded health and disability services in Australia.

We understand that this may not be the answer you were hoping for, however, for alternative insurance options you may wish to try the Insurance Council of Australia (http://www.findaninsurer.com.au) or the NIBA’s website insurance broker (http://www.needabroker.com.au).

Hi Adam,

I'm sorry to hear that. If your policy is still current, there is provision to cover your medical expenses if you needed to see a doctor, as well as any medication that the doctor prescribes.

Just make sure you get the consultation notes/medical report, and keep hold of all receipts for the consultation and medication. When you're ready you can submit your claim online here: https://www.scti.com.au/claims/make-a-claim/.

If you have any questions about making a claim, you're more than welcome to contact us by email at [email protected] and we would be happy to help.

Get well soon!

Hi there,

I have looked into your cover for my upcoming trip in Nepal in which I will be trekking to Everest Base Camp. I will be going as a group with some friends, with a tour guide organised with a licensed tour operator in Nepal (Trekking Mart).

Just confirming, that as long as I am just trekking (no professional equipment will be required) that I will be covered up to 6,000m (or is it with no restriction on altitude level or snow condition)? This also includes all medical and helicopter (air) evacuation off the mountain in the case of an emergency?

Thank you.

Hi Kat,

Thanks for your question. Sounds like you have an exciting trip planned!

We're unable to offer you cover for altitudes of more than 3,000m. So as you're trekking to 6,000m, our policy may not be the best option for you.

I understand that this may not be the answer you were hoping for, however, for alternative insurance options you could try the Insurance Council of Australia (http://www.findaninsurer.com.au) or the NIBA’s website insurance broker (http://www.needabroker.com.au).

Have a fantastic time in Nepal.

Are there any circumstances when I would have to pay a greater excess than the $100 quoted?

Hi Sorad,

Thanks for your question. There are no circumstances where you would have to pay more than the excess that is quoted at the time you purchase your travel insurance.

During the application process, you'll need to complete an online medical questionnaire to declare your pre-existing medical conditions. Once you've done this, we'll let you know the cost of having these conditions covered, however, it's up to you whether you choose to cover your pre-existing medical conditions. You can find more information here: https://www.scti.com.au/what-we-cover/pre-existing-conditions/

If you have any other questions, please feel free to call us on 1800 196 484.

Safe travels,

Thank you for your prompt reply. It has been very helpful in choosing my travel insurance as some companies quote up to $3000 excess for claims from pre existing complaints, making it hardly worthwhile to take out insurance for a short holiday.

Do you pay medical bills directly to the hospital/provider for approved claims? I have heard that most travel insurance providers make you pay for the medical bills personally and get reimbursed from the insurance company afterwards.

Hi Angel,

If you require medical care or incur medical expenses overseas that are likely to exceed $2,000, you or someone acting on your behalf will need to contact Southern Cross Emergency Assistance for prior approval as soon as possible on +61 2 9191 1180.

We will be able to review your claim, organise emergency evacuation if necessary, provide the hospital with a payment guarantee so you don’t have to pay up-front, and keep your family back home informed of your situation.

I hope that answers your question. If there is anything else you need to know, you're welcome to contact us directly on +61 2 9191 1180 or [email protected].

Thanks,

Hi Obi. Thank you for your question.

When purchasing a policy online, you are required to enter all the destinations that you will be travelling to. Please feel free to go to our website: https://www.scti.com.au/ and generate a quote there.
You can purchase a travel insurance policy whenever you like, however we do recommend customers purchase a travel insurance policy when they pay for any flights or non-refundable deposits, so you are covered should anything unexpected happen before departing Australia.

Please feel free to contact the team directly if you have any further questions at [email protected].

Yes, you would still need cover in transit too.

I'm a bit confused about the answer Lusitania from SCTI gave here.
I literally just came off the phone with SCTI asking this exact question and they said where you are just transiting a country without going through immigration, not leaving the airport and below 24 hours, this is included and covered by their travel insurance. So, the USA are excluded, but all normal transit stops should be included according to what their customer service just told me when I called their hotline...

Hi Just want to know if something happens overseas and we need to call an ambulance and be taken to hospital, if we call Southern Cross Travel insurance at the time do they cover all medical costs? Or do we need to pay upfront first and then claim from our insurance policy? Please advise. Thanks

1 answer
Southern Cross Travel Insurance
Southern Cross T.Southern Cross Travel Insurance

Hi Margaret F. Thank you for your question.
Our TravelCare policy provides cover for medical expenses due to an unexpected event.
Minor medical claims which usually only require a visit to a GP are handled on a pay and claim basis. This means that you would need to pay for costs upfront and ask for a copy of all your consultant notes, as well as keeping the original receipts.
If hospital treatment or surgery becomes necessary, you or someone acting on your behalf must call the Southern Cross Emergency Assistance team on our 24/7 emergency assistance phone line +61 2 9191 1180. We will provide confirmation of payment for your claim, which means that you do not need to pay for the costs upfront, as we will arrange direct payment to the hospital.
If you would like to discuss any other aspect of your policy, feel free to contact us directly on [email protected].
Kind regards

Is volcano covered I'm going to Bali on the 11th of May.Also do you cover me as a passenger on a scooter

2 answers
Southern Cross Travel Insurance
Southern Cross T.Southern Cross Travel Insurance

Hi Jodes. Thank you for your question.

Is Volcano covered I’m going to Bali on the 11th of May - We offer the TravelCare policy which provides cover for unexpected events only.
Please be aware, we are currently no providing cover for the Mt Agung eruption as this is an ongoing event.
Due to the nature of this event, we are unable to provide a specific date for when cover will resume. We currently have information on our website about Mt Agung and what you're covered for. You can find this info here: https://www.scti.co.nz/travel-advice/mount-agung-bali/

It is important to remember that there is still cover for other unexpected events which may occur on your journey which are not related to this event, in accordance with the policy.

Do you cover me as a passenger on a scooter - There is provision to cover riding a scooter as a passenger under the policy. However, it is important that you are aware of the following General Exclusions:
General Exclusions of this Policy Applying to All Sections
We will not pay for any claims under any section of this Policy arising directly or indirectly from:
25. Riding a moped or motorcycle (whether as driver or passenger) in any of the following circumstances:
(a) where the engine capacity is more than 200cc; or
(b) without a helmet; or
(c) without a valid driver’s licence as required in the country You are in.
26. Participation in, or training for, the following activities at any time during Your Period of Insurance:
(d) racing, including against time, of any sort (other than solely on foot);

These and a full list of General Exclusions can be found on page 10 of the policy wording.
This means that there would be no provision for cover for anything directly or indirectly related to riding a motorcycle or moped with an engine capacity of more than 200cc, riding a motorcycle or moped of 200cc or less without a helmet, or riding a motorcycle or moped without a valid driver’s licence as required in the country you are in.
If you are unsure what the driver’s licence requirements are in the country you are visiting, you may wish to refer to the country’s tourism website, the rental company or check with your travel agent who may be able to advise you further.

If you were riding a motorcycle or moped of 200cc or less, with a helmet, and the correct licence, and were injured due to an unexpected event, there would be provision under the policy for any medical costs incurred for injuries to yourself, unless otherwise excluded under the policy.

Have a great time in Bali!

Hi. Just back from Bali on 14th May 18. Had a transport driver who lives a few k's from Mt Agung Volcano and said its done nothing since before Christmas. Hardly any smoke. In fact he said its been acting as always for the past decades he's lived there. Nothing like local knowledge !!
Insurance companies, as always are always using any "out" they can get and Mt Agung is just another one. They'll drag it out as long as they can because they are not held to account. You may have noticed no premium reduction despite reduced coverage !!
Its way past time the next "banking inquiry" moves on to an "insurance inquiry".
A strong suggestion is complain to Fair Trading because its blatantly unfair !!
