What is the difference between the S1 and the S2?

Hi David and Kung, thanks for your question. :)

The only difference between the S1 and the S2 is the S1 has a rechargeable battery and the S2 needs to be plugged into a power source to operate. :)

Other than that they have exactly the same specifications and features. :)

I heard that the backflow protector should move forward till the casing while pumping but mine only move till half of it. I’ve checked that all the parts are assembled correctly and they are brand new since I’ve just recently bought it. I’m waiting for a smaller flange size to arrive as I think the default ones are a little big. Are there something wrong with my backflow protector or it’s because of the flange size?

Hi Keriko, thanks for your message :-)

Would you like to send us a video of what's happening so we can check that out for you? You can either send via Facebook Messenger or to [email protected] :-) The backflow protector movement does depend on the settings used, so if you could show how the movement changes as the levels are increased we can check if that's working normally for you :-)

I just got an s1, and the first time I pulled it out of the box when it was delivered, there was something (a small nut? a piece of plastic that broke off of something?) rattling around in it. It seemed to turn in fine but it makes a clicking noise every cycle. Is that normal, or is something broken/not functioning correctly? Could that noise be related to the part rattling around when I took it out of the box? Do I need to bring it back to the store and exchange it?

Hi Joy, thanks for asking about your pump. I am sorry to hear about this.

It does sound a bit unusual. Can you shoot us a message to [email protected] with some pics, and more info about your pump, and we can look at what is going on for you. If you could let us know how much run time you get from leaving your pump on charge overnight, till the battery is dead, that would be good too. :)

Hello! I'm experiencing pain when pumping and have tried numerous shield sizes and also my medela shields on the pump so I don't think size is a problem. I'm wondering what the most effective but gentle setting combination is? I need to go above 4 to ensure flow. Currently hiring another pump until I can get the spectra right. Would be great to get some ideas! Thank you, Kate.

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hey Kate,

Thanks for your question. I'm sorry to hear you are getting pain when pumping, that's no good. There are a few reasons you can get pain, and its hard to say without more information about what the pain is like (ie is it during pumping, is it on the nipple, the breast itself etc). Shield size is one reason, and there are also possibilities like thrush or mastitis that may cause pain too.

Initially I would suggest using the pump in massage mode (press the wavy lines button in the middle of the pump) - this gives a fast but gentle action. The cycle speed will be 70, and you can adjust your suction between level 1 and 5 for comfort.

For more personalised help i would suggest contacting our Customer Service team so we can help further for your particular needs. We are available via Facebook message, email or phone. [email protected]

Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your question. The most common issue we have experienced with pumps not switching on or charging is that the Australian adapter isn't fully pushed into the charger. It does require a little bit of elbow grease the first time, but you will hear a loud click when it has been pushed down all the way. Can you please take your adaptor apart, and assemble it again, till you hear that loud click?

Here's a video to describe further:

If you find this doesnt help (which in your case I am suspecting it wont) please get in touch with our customer support team and we will troubleshoot further with you, and organise for a repair if necessary. [email protected]

Hi if I purchased this from Amazon, will the product be compatible in Australia? Will we be able to plug in the rechargeable station to an Australian outlet? Thanks

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Leanne,

Thanks for sending through your question. You would need to check the voltage and Amps on the charger you have for the pump. Australia uses 240v and the S1 needs a 12v, 2 milliamp charger. You may need to get an adaptor for your pump (from a travel store or airport) which can convert it for you.

Your best bet will be to get in contact with the seller of the pump so that they can confirm this, as pumps designed for other countries do vary slightly internally.

If we can help further please let us know.

Kind regards

I have a brand new s1 and it keeps turning it's self off after 2 seconds?! The battery symbol shows just a flashing outline when plugged in? Am I doing Something wrong? Or is the pump faulty?

Hi Rach,

Thanks for sending through your question. The most common issue we have experienced with pumps not switching on or charging is that the Australian adapter isn't fully pushed into the charger. (the flashing battery symbol tells me it doesn't have any charge) It does require a little bit of elbow grease the first time, but you will hear a loud click when it has been pushed down all the way.

Hi I have an S1 pump and have had it since May and have LOVED it! However recently it has been not turning on (even the light) if it is not plugged in. Once I plug it in it says it has full battery and will work fine, if I unplug it with it already turned on it continues to work but if I stop it and try to start it again it still won't turn on. Do you think I have an issue with the battery?

Sounds like it is. Either way its definitely a fault as it shouldn't be doing that. How old is the pump? (If you purchased it new in May its still under warranty) Spectra are pretty good with their warranty and will even loan you a replacement pump. You can fill in a claim form here: https://spectra-baby.com.au/warranty/

Hi.Whats the difference between s1 and s2 hospital grade pumps???I am about to order one of them but I dont know which one.I want to pump exlusively and I want to increase my milk produxtion. Which obe should I buy? Do you send them to Greece?

1 answer
Spectra
Customer Service T.Spectra

Hi Lia,

Great question. The main difference between the S1 and the S2, is that the S1 has a rechargeable battery. So it can used on mains or on battery, making it very portable. The S2 is mains powered only. The S1 is blue and the S2 is pink. Other than that, they are the same in terms of function and use. If you are wanting to exclusively express and increase milk production, then either pump would be fantastic :-)

Unfortunately we are unable to ship to Greece. You may find that Spectra in the UK might ship there?

Hi! I starting to use my S1 but sadly i'm getting small amount of expressed milk like 2 oz per session. I am using 70/L4 at first then 36/L7 onwards.. am I doing the right thing? I am nursing my 2 month old and my supply is enough for him.

Hi MRP - thanks for shooting through your question.

Sometimes it can take your body a little while to adjust to pumping versus direct breastfeeding, but here is an instructional video to get you started using the S2/S1
https://spectra-baby.com.au/spectra-s2-hospital-grade-breast-pump/ This will help you work out if you have everything set up correctly.

Below is an overview of the two main modes - massage and expression :)

When you first switch the S1/S2 pump on, it will be in expression mode. You need to press the little 'Waves' button to flick it over to massage mode.

When in massage mode, the cycle speed will be at 70 and you can change vacuum strength between 1 and 5 and you will see little wavy lines on the top left of your display screen.

Keep it in massage mode until your milk is flowing, which may take a number of minutes, and then press the wavy lines again to put the pump back into expression mode. You can keep it in massage mode as long as you like if necessary.

When in expression mode, the settings can be changed, sounds like you've found what is comfortable for you. But you can play around with the settings a bit, there is no "right or wrong" setting, just what suits you best, and that may vary from day to day, pump to pump.

Keep using this mode at a vacuum that is comfortable (do not try turning it up too high). When your milk stops flowing, press the wavy lines again and put the pump back into massage mode. Repeat this process until your breasts feel empty.

You will find that massaging / compressing your breasts while you are expressing will help to get more milk out.

If you need more help, please feel free to contact our customer support team on [email protected]

Hi MRP, i just wanted to say, my expressed volume at 4 months is sometimes still 2oz. It varies a lot throughout the day, how hydrated I am and mostly, how tired I am. I went through a couple weeks of very little EBM due to so little rest (waking every hour). What Im saying is, this may change and dont get disheartened yet.
