Hi my Maytag has just run it's course after 20years & I looking at a Speed Queen LWS42 Commercial top load 8kg washing machine can you tell me if this is the latest model & what is the RRP? Also would you you let me know the model no. for a 10kg Speed Queen washing machine Cheryl

Speed Queen
Craige C.Speed Queen

Hi Cheryl,
The latest Speed Queen model is the AWNE92 an 8.5kg with a couple of more options than the LWS42 which is not recommended for home use as it dose not process excess lint efficiently. The new model allows you to modify your favourite wash cycle by adding a soak, prewash or an extra rinse or two. The retail price is $2695.00.
The 10kg model is AFNE9 which is a front load machine.
Thankyou for your question, regards Speed Queen

I'm interested in getting a Speed Queen. However I am concerned by the short cycle times. Is this actually long enough to get laundry clean? I have two young boys and our laundry is filthy. I've been using machines at the laundromat which do 30 minute cycles and the clothes are coming out still stained, sometimes with food still stuck to them which I can scrape off.

Hi there. Whilst I don't have grubby little kids clothes anymore I do have teenagers with white school shirts and a sometimes grubby hubby :) and I always pre stain spray before washing and with a 30 minute cycle clothes always come out clean. I know its a big investment so I hope this has been helpful to you.

Our kids are grown up now, so while we have large loads, they're not that dirty. I do, however, wash our pet bedding occasionally which is filthy, and it comes out beautifully clean with very little residual pet hair on the clothes or in the bowl. I always clean bulky residue off my clothes before they go into the wash. You'd do the same thing with a dishwasher. It's a washing machine - not a garbage disposal.

cenw
cenw

Thanks. I don't have any "bulky residue" on my children's clothes, I'm trying to imagine what that could be! I do have two constantly shedding dogs and a cat so it's good to know the machines could handle pet hair.
The sorts of things that have remained stuck on clothing after short wash cycles at the laundromat are things like dried yoghurt/sauce.
I've had two front loaders both of which washed very well but take hours to do so, and then both stopped working after 2-3 years. So I'm interested in getting a more reliable machine but I am still worried about short cycle times not cutting it.

Hi. I have a very old top loader speed queen. She is about 30 years old. She is still running like a baby. She is a heavy duty with extra large capacity. How many kg's do you think she can take and how large is the largest capacity for a front loader speed queen?
TIA.

Craige C.Speed Queen

Hi Tia, SQ top load washer capacities have not change much over the years in fact they have all been the same volumetric capacity with only difference being the amount of water they use. I suspect yours would be some where around the 7.5kg mark being 30 years old.
Our front load washers are all 10kg capacity and like our top load washers are very much the same as the Speed Queen commercial models check them out online.

I am in the market for a new washing machine after my 19 year old Kleenmaid spat the dummy. Speed Queen seems exactly what I want, but I am concerned that in the Choice magazine review on top loading washing machines, Speed Queen came in last, with the worst water use, worst energy use etc etc.

Would Speed Queen like to comment? I'm not likely to be put off by Choice, because I have learnt that reviews on Product Review are a better indicator of product reliability than Choice, but I am interested to know why Speed Queen fared so badly with Choice.

1 answer
Speed Queen
Craige C.Speed Queen

Hi Sally,
The water and energy consumption of all washing machines has a direct correlation to the cycle times, motor size and the machines life expectancy. The real difference in water & electricity consumption between most washers can be as little as 20 cents per wash however the difference in wash times can vary by over 1000 hours annually which equates to a 35min wash cycle on a SQ versus some 3+ hours on other popular brands.
I do not know the exact parameters that Choice use to test washing machines however I do know they do not test for longevity or reliability for which Speed Queen are renown for.
I hope this helps in making your next purchase decision.

I am looking at replacing my 25 year old Maytag top loader washing machine.
Open to top or front loader type as a replacement. I have 6 active adults to wash for.

Could anyone tell me the length of wash time for the front loader please? I did find the time for the top loader seems to be about 35 minutes according to one reviewer here. Does not seem to be listed on the Speedqueen website or downloaded brochures.
Is there any particular benefit to the front loader vs top loader?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer advice.

I believe its 35 mins as well. but to be honest with you for a large family with possibly heavy amounts of soiling the top loader would much better suit your needs.
My top load speed queen seems to do a much better wash than my fathers Bosch front loader of the same capacity.

Craige C.Speed Queen

Hi wanted-66, Craige from Speed Queen here.
We have just released a new range of front load washers that can viewed at www.speedqueen.com.au they are just as reliable as our top loader but with a bigger capacity 10kg with cycle times for a full family wash from 45 mins. Front load washers do tend be better for washing delicates.
I hope this helps your washer research.

Gnomes
Gnomes

The top loader is very large capacity. It is very quick at 35 mins so you can do lots of loads in a short time and get them on the line. Mind you 45 mins for a front loader sounds great.

I don't know if it comes apart because mine is just a washing machine. You should ask the person selling it to you.
If it goes for a year then it is a good price at $3.85 a week.

Is it still going Hazzcam?
I just bought an awna62, brand new, but would have loved a second hand one. Especially at that brilliant price! How old was it? These things are well known for going 20yrs plus. In some cases, for 40yrs. If mine lasts 15, it's money well spent - $166 per annum, works out at. If yours lasts 2, you're well ahead! Especially for a washer & dryer!
I love that these are so simple to fix, as well.

Hi, I am looking at buying an AWNA62 Washing Machine. Can you tell me how many decibels the machine is expected to make at its noisiest? I am replacing a very noise machine (bearings gone) and I want to be sure that my new machine is quiet enough. Thanks for your help.

I have actually just purchased an AWNA62 to replace my old Speed Queen which after 25 years and LOTS of hard work (farm clothes and a diesel mechanics cloths) had become pretty noisy (it was still going). My new one which I have only had a week seems pretty good., Sorry I can't be more help on the actual decibels.

Sandy
Sandy

It is super quiet. My old machine had the bearings on the way out and I could hear it almost anywhere in the house (in fact my neighbours could hear it). The new machine is so quiet I have to be inside the laundry to hear it. You will not be disappointed in the AWNA62. Decibels on the old machine read at 66dcb. New machine is so quiet that from 2mts away you only measure ambient noise (general household noise like wind blowing or a car driving past the front of the house while I was in the back of the house)

Hi Wendy

I saw mine at Harvey Norman. They even had one with a clear front so I could see all the metal parts inside. I haven't had to re-spin the clothes. Like I say, it just doesn't annoy me except for the tiny little humming noise which is cured by turning it off at the power point. It works like a washing machine should.

Looking at buying a new top load washing machine. Really interested in the Speed Queen as I have heard of nothing but problems with the other brands in general. The thing that is holding me back is the capacity. I currently have a 7.5kg Simpson...about 15yrs old. I wanted to upgrade to a larger size, as my current machine can't fit my doona, and I find I have to divide our clothes into many washes so they can fit.
I have heard that there is a10kg model coming out later this year, but I am scared about the price as I've been told it could be around $4000mark... Which I can't afford.
I have 2 questions
1. Is the $4000 price point for the 10kg top loader correct?
2. Would the 7.5kg Speed Queen hold more clothing than my 7.5kg Simpson... Even a doona... Due to the better quality motor (as the sales rep told me) or would shoving it in simply cause the machine to not be able to hold enough water to wash properly?
Thanks for considering my question

Many thanks for your question. Capacity is an interesting topic with washing machine because very few users ever load their washer the way the testing authorities do when testing washers for their water and electricity usage ratings.
At Speed Queen laundry is all we do and our testing of 7.5 -10kg washing machines has shown that while many washing machines will fit a queen size doona and other oversize articles in their washbowl none has proven to able wash them to a commercially satisfactory result. Yes many of them will wet the load and complete the cycle but their is a difference between wetting the load and washing it properly.
The Speed Queen home-style 7.5kg top load washer has the identical motor, gearbox and wash bowl as the commercial machines used Laundromats and commercial/industrial applications worldwide and has far greater mechanical capacity for large loads than the domestics machines offered today. Ten pairs of men's jeans or 14 standard size bath towels are typical loads that you could expect the Speed Queen washer to wash satisfactorily.
The larger capacity machine that will be available later in this year has the identical motor, gearbox and bowl size of the current 7.5kg machine only it will use about 10% more water and have a longer wash cycle to allow for the larger load.
I hope the above answers your question and helps with your purchase deliberations.

Lynne

Hi. sorry but I haven't tried washing a doona yet. I can tell you that it takes 8 bathtowels and a bathmat easily. I wash two queen bed sheet sets at a time with assorted socks etc and have yet to overload it. I bought it because I had heard of so many problems with cheaper machines. I just wanted something like my old machine, that would wash, do a separate spin and do it fairly quickly.
My only problem with the Speed Queen is the faint buzzing noise it makes when not in use. So I turn it off at the power point

caz
caz

I cannot fit my king size wool doona in my 7.5kg speedqueen. My friend has a top load
Fisher &Paykel 10kg and I can fit the doona in the bowl but the washer is not powerful enough to wash it properly. About once per year I take it to a commercial laundromat
and they put it into a huge front loader to wash it.
Everything else I can wash in the speedqueen. My daughter has a queen size quilted bedspread which fits in and washes really well.
The speedqueen 7.5 kg can certainly handle a large amount of clothes per wash due to its large motor and in my opinion can handle a bigger load than other brands of the same size, but if you want to wash extra large loads to reduce the quantity of loads or wash big doonas then the 10kg model that is coming would be well worth considering.

I found fabric softener just kept building up, and became a black slimy sludge. If you pull straight up the top section comes off, and you can clean it. I have been using vinegar instead of fabric softener. You cannot smell it when the clothes are dry. Makes towels more absorbent. Keeps the washing machine clean.

It's probably time to get a washing machine repairs technician to have a look at it @ preferably the proper speedqueen repairs department in which the shop where you bought the washing machine from might be able to direct you to them.

It's most likely the timer though it's way better to leave repairs to the trained qualified professionals.

Hi tealeabode,
The top loader uses,

High Efficiency Cycle: Max - 99 (26.2), Min - 81 (21.4)
Normal Cycle: Max - 176 (46.5), Min - 119 (31.5)
Liters (Gallons)

HI,

I'm not really sure, it does take quite a long time to fill though when it is on the maximum setting.

Can I say that I don't think you will be as happy with this as your current Kleenmaid. I previously had a Maytag, which unfortunately is not available any more, and the Speed Queen doesn't come close to it. For instance, the spin cycle crushes the clothes so much, despite what cycle is used. I always stop the machine before the spin finishes. It has still has the constant hum in the machine unless it is turned off at the power point. Costello's weren't that interested when I contacted them.

Washing, an equation of water used, wash time, wash temp and wash action. Front load(FL) do use less water than top load(TL) and can be kinder to your delicate items but do use more time. Depending on make, model and cycle used, the water you could save over 1 year by using a FL would be between 17-35kilolitres of water. In Sydney that would cost approx.$38-$78*but the trade-off is time.(*currently charged @$2.232per kl) FL can take up to 3.5 times longer to wash. 1 wash per day over a year is a difference of over 1000 hours of washing time and wear on your machine. All machines have faster wash cycles than that tested by WELS however these are for reduced load sizes or can take considerably more water than that stated. The SQ TL uses 107-167Lts of water per wash compared to a FL that will use between 54-106Lts for the similar load size. A 35min wash cycle Vs a water saving of .21c per wash?. [email protected]

Have you got it set to wash on High Efficiency or Regular? I just wash on Regular and my washing is finished well under one hour. I know the High Efficiency option takes a lot longer to wash. However, I never use that wash option because you can't use the fabric softner dispenser on that option. I love my fabric softner, so I'm sticking to the Regular wash option.
