Miss it a lot
In 2012, our family decided to buy a new car that could accommodate all our needs, we needed a large SUV for our growing family. We went out one day to our local car dealers and came across a 2008 SsangYong Rexton RX270xdi Sports. Was something I had never seen before, after taking a decent look at it, we took it for a test drive and fell in love with it (thanks to the previous owner who kept the car in pristine shape). This was the base model but still came with quite a few goodies for the price the previous owner had paid (less that RRP) whic...Read more
h included a decent sound system, side steps, roof rails, a DVD player for rear seat passengers, rear air vents which went all the way into the third row with their own fan speed controls, brake assist and electric and heated side mirrors. This car also drove beautifully with not much turbo lag, great ride and handling and decent fuel economy with an average of 9l/100km from its 5cyl 2.7l turbo Diesel engine which made a respectable 121kw and 340nm which was pretty good for a car of this era. The AWD system was excellent and there wasnt much to fault about this car. In the time that we have owned the car, we did around 130,000km since 2012 (total of 190,000km) without it missing a beat. Servicing costs were also pretty low which was surprising as the car was fitted with Mercedes Benz running gear. The car aged incredibly well, all the paint still looked pristine minus a few tiny scratches and the interior held up extremely well. This car had been apart of the family and was truly loved and looked after. At around 180k km, we started to notice a problem with the AWD system being stuck in the wrong setting, although the setting was manually adjustable, we switched it over but it still wouldnt go into the correct setting. At first we thought it was nothing but then it never went away which was partly our fault for not doing anything about it. $1,600 latter, it was fixed. After this, we had no problems with the vehicle at all but then sadly we had to let it go as it got written off. This was hard as this car had brought so many lasting memories. If anyone was considering buying a SsangYong, I would highly recommend one.Purchased in November 2021.

Over 90 cars, and finally found the best
After 3 &1/2 years of trouble free (65000Klms) of reasonably hard driving, and having owned over 90 cars of varying types and makes, I firmly believe I have found my ideal vehicle.
My wife and I drive our Rexton "W" almost daily, with weekly trips to Melbourne of over 600Klms, this fantastic vehicle has not missed a beat.
We have tow our 17&1/2 foot caravan and boat with ease, most of the time hardly knowing they're on the back. Fuel consumption is a constant 7.5 L/per/Klm normal/mixed driving, and 9.5 L/p/k when towing.

Very good vehicle.
Usually only two people ride in our vehicle, but twice a year on holidays we have seven riding well, used for general family use, shopping, outings, holidays, would be driven three times a week at least, wonderful to ride in, driving is excellent, reasonably cheap to own and run, nice quiet 4WD.

Hello Mr Ssangyong (Double Dragon)
After many Rexton's, I have now designed the best Rexton for you!! SPR with the independent rear end with a Dobbinson lift kit, the Mistsi Turbo 2700cc 5 cylinder and with 5/6 speed manual or with the new 8 speed Merc Auto transmission. Yes and do a dual cab with a 1000 kg back end. You will sell a shed load, all very reliable and great fuel economy. The biggest problem with SsangYong Australia was you did not believe in your own product. Dirt poor after sales service!!

Drove the rest and bought New Rexton
The negatives- No reverse camera, GPS or after market nudge/Bull bar, Space saver spare tyre for 4x4!!!
The good- Very comfortable, great fuel economy 35 mpg plus, handles well on the highway, great in the sand and tows well for a 2l diesel. Very easy to DIY service, most parts available on Ebay, I save on labour and use the best oils and parts. I took advice from some of the European blogs and dropped the huge central muffler out of the system sounds much better still quiet and you can really feel the difference with performance. (Still not...Read more
a V8). I got a 5 year extended warranty. Like all vehicles the dealers are the main problem. If you have problems and the dealers will not fix, bag the crap out of them on social media and name names as I have had Holdens, Merc's, Toyota's and it is always the owners fault not the car!!! There are lemons with every brand. I have had all 3 series of Rexton's the best is RX270 XVT SPR which my son has now with lift kit and his huge tyres and goes every where cheaper and more comfortable than the $80k plus cars. Yes I'm a Double Dragon (Ssangyong) fan, 3 Rextons, 1st series Korando, Kyron and Musso. I will be waiting for the next 2018 Rexton with the merc seven speed auto and their 2.2l. Showed early promise BUT,
Purchased in aug 2016 with only 49000 klm and was very happy with it for first 6 months just pottering around rural victoria BUT when i hooked on the caravan it failed within 4 days and became a nightmare. Rated to tow 2300kg and i had a pop top van way less than that but it boiled 4 times before we reached albury and took a month to be repaired in sydney and cost nearly $2000. Next the turbo died which put it off the road for 3 months waiting for parts from overseas and cost nearly $5000. Car was fully maintained and serviced at ssangyong deal...Read more
ers but just wasnt up to any real use as a tow vehicle, all show no go. Bit like a European woman really, looks great has everything you could want and very well presented but plays up all the time and is expensive to keep and highly tempramental.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Great performer and very under rated
I currently have a 2015 Rexton Y285. This is my 3rd Ssangyong. First one was a 2008 Kyron with the 2.7ltr motor and 5 speed auto. Purchased it new and did 90K. Apart from servicing, replacing a set of tyres and a battery, it gave me trouble free motoring. I pull a campervan, and a boat regularly and it was perfect. I was so impressed I bought a top of the line Rexton in 2012, again with the 2.7ltr motor. I did $48K trouble free KMs and this time with the more luxurious fit out. In 2016 I traded it on a demonstrator Rexton Y285. I was ini...Read more
tially apprehensive about the smaller 2ltr motor. It is not as responsive, particularly when overtaking or on an incline but with adjustments to your driving your quickly get used to it and the impressive fuel economy. The 15K service intervals help with maintenance cost. I have done 40K on this and it is faultless. Could do with some tie down points in the rear compartment. The 5sp transmission is good, but old technology. 6 or 8 sp would be a great improvement. So...as a previous owner of Landcruisers, Patrols, Jeeps and even a Discovery, I have found a brand that suits my needs, is well optioned and is excellent value from money. Ssangyong could do more with sales and marketing. This would improve its 'brand' and as a result improve resale values. The product is equal to and in fact better, in my view, than Kia or Hyundai and they all come out of Korea.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
A perfect towing vehicle
I bought the vehicle to replace an elderly Jeep. I use it almost exclusively for towing my 1300 kg caravan around the State and it really is the perfect choice. It is the first diesel I have ever owned and I still find the smoothness, comfort and quietness when travelling at 100 km/hour very impressive. So far nothing has misbehaved and it pulls the caravan without effort.
The cost was a fraction of what I would have paid for the competition and I was able to find a 2007 manual example! With only 135,000 km currently on the clock, I hope to keep it for a long while.

The allmost perfect car. Great buy
This car is built for the off-roaders. That love to get a bit dirty. Got it in 2012. It definetly could be improved. Had it for a year and had done 30000 km and it wouldn't change gear. Had to pull over on the busy road and turn the car off wait a couple of minutes and then restart. Happened for a little and the stopped. Got to the end of last year (2016) and couldn't get it out of drive. I thought that would be the end of it, took it to the machanic and hat to get part of the gearbox replaced. Having previously owning a Mercedes I was expectin...Read more
g big things. I didnt quite get it but for the price, didn't really matter. The interior in quite stylish just lacking a bit of colour. Came with a lot of air conditioning. 1 st, 2nd and 3 Rd row seats. Just lacking a bit of tech compared to its rivals ( HoldenCaptiva Ford Teritory TX and TS and the and the Hyundai Santa Fe. Why did we chose the Ssangyong Rsxton. Heard great thing about it. I'm probly being a bit picky. The paint isn't that great either. it scratches very easily and if you are someone like me, and don't like scratches on your car, it's expensive to get fixed. Great job Ssangyong Mercedes motor group., just a lit bit from great for the price. would recomendSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Just an underdog that is a real gem inside
Hello, I am from Bosnia in Europe and I drive a used 2007 5cyl Diesel XVT automatic AWD with magnificent 187 hp. I bought the car 4 years ago and have done almost 250.000 km in it. The car gave me the trouble of losing the front wheel which is because of poor or lack of a real Ssangyong mechanic here in Bosnia, and so I had to learn the hard way that the lower front ball joints had to be replaced every 50.000km or so in order to keep your car on the road. This is a typical "Merc" issue where the ball joints give no sign or sound of fatigue unti...Read more
l they pop out. Now I replace them every third service (every 30.000km) just to be safe but since it is a cheap fix it is no problem for my peace of mind. I recommend a transmission fluid and filter change every third service for silky smooth gear change. No mechanical issues so far. Engine is silky rough as I like to describe it. Tons of torque and lots of mileage. Mine does with aggressive driving approx 12 - 14 l/100km. I like the AWD no fuss (no separate drive select on my trim) capabilities and for its construction (separate chassis), very good handling (8 point link in the back) Only flaw I think is the sensitive wheel geometry, so I do a checkup or repair twice a year (every seasonal tyre change) Lots of room for the dog and the kids. Very reliable car and because every car has its downs, I will not mention mine because they are my individual views of what a car should and should not have or do and I will not mention them because there are so few things wrong with this car for the money. Yes its Korean hard plastic interior, but very well equipped and I just have not met his rival for the money. Yes it is a Mercedes in disguise and I love it. Should mention that I do on average 60 - 70k km a year and my service is every 10k Every service I replace all the filters including the AC filter along with the air intake filter. I try to use good quality diesel and I drive it hard (highway) in higher revs ( no higher than 4200rpm ) as much as I can.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Great value for money
Purchased used rexton from dealer in Melbourne with 48000 klms and full books. Top of the range model with leather, sunroof, towbar and great condition. Has not missed a beat and super comfortable on a long drive and rides very quietly and smooth on unsealed roads due to 18 inch alloys and high profile standard tyres. Have ridden in friends hilux and prado and they are a noisy truck by comparison, Steering is both high light and low light, amazing turning circle with no groaning wheel lock noise, but can be a little light at 110kmh on the freew...Read more
ay. AT less than $18000 to purchase it is less than half the price of a 2012 prado. Recent 1000 klm trip to beechworth with 4 adults plus rear full of luggage and eskys returned a whisker under 10 litres per 100 klm. Very good vehicle and fantastic value for money as you don't pay for the badge.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Do Not Buy
I read all the reviews on this site n others and despite the warnings not to buy cause there were a few good one. I went out bought one owned it for one month drove it three four times mind you not very far just locally and thank god was only local. In this time engine light had come one three times first time got $1500 fillers of work done to repair such as wiring. New glow plug sensor. New fuel water separator. And few others things. Second time code just got cleared and only drove it home less than 7 km next day went to start it same thing e...Read more
ngine light back on buy this time I have had it and had sent it back to dealer got refund. While it does look stylish. From the side. 3 row seats very cramped. And a pain to get kids in and out of. Steering is a lot different to Australian cars you'll find a lot of over steer to have to go round a corner. While it is a four wheel drive and went OK on the sand is still very low compared to its rivals being land cruiser or Pajero. So trying to go up sand dunes didn't have it in it to do it. Instead went around is very good sound system that's jack on the driving comparison. 2 and row seats OK but still very crowded. Remember it's to have a Mercedes engine but in fact it's a blue print of that engine Mercedes didn't actually manufacturer it. Being a European car don't really think it's suited for the Australian client. I was lucky and able to take mine back but if you buy one and don't have that option you will be stuck with endless problems and regret. The key has a battery if it goes flat you can't buy one in Australia. I could not recommend highly enough not to buy one the turbo diesel is what I had and it smelt all the time not much power really I got told prior to buying it. That old be better off with a push bike and in all honestly you would be. Do not buy a SsangYong Rexton 2006 or really any. It's a cheap made car. Made to look good but that's it cheap made and cost a lot to keep fixing.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Bit the bullet and im not looking back
It took me over 12 months of research and speaking with mechanics to finally bite the bullet and buy one. All i can say is that what my wife and i put this through and after owning a 120 series Prado and living on a property we are very happy.
For the price we paid for our Rexton the equivalent T/D Prado had over 200,000kms on it and well used so that made our mind up.
We have done 16,000kms so far with no issue
Not the fastest thing but the end of the day ITS A 4X4
Fuel economy is good avg 8.5L per 100km
Its got all the bells and whistles that you need
Its comfortable on long trips

. Never again..
Performance on the low side.
Handles like a rocking chair
Noise reasonable
Finish is acceptable.
Interior is acceptable.
Reliability is good for travel to the corner shop. Running costs OK..
The vehicle is reasonable but the Service supplied by the Importers with Roadside call centre is hopeless they have no idea whatsovever. Availability of Spare Parts and price for same are shockers so make sure you dont breakdown too far away from home. Oh by the way forget the warranty and I think the National Service Manager is rude arrogant and indifferent.

Not a bad car. Just some slight issues.
Hey, I think my engine power relay needs to be replaced. My SsangYong over heats to the top of the red and the engine light comes on. It only does it every so often though. I was just wondering how much it costs to get replaced? And where the best mechanic for SsangYong's in Brisbane is to get it done? Thanks Heaps.

Rexton W - Just brilliant
This is my fourth Ssangyong and it is the best by far, I purchased it in June 2014 and it has not had one single even slight issue.
The new generation 2.0 diesel is smooth, powerful, quiet and economical around town to drive. It tows my 17 foot 1300 kg caravan at 100 km/h with no worries and the silky 5 speed auto does a really great job of ensuring the car is always in the right gear at the right time.

o towing and offroading. It's ride is very good for this type of vehicle - a massive improvement over the Kyron I traded on it. I am a big fan of sand driving and all the Ssangyongs I've owned have been fantastic for this - and I keep them stock apart from tyres. So far I have the only Rexton W in SA, but I certainly hope that more folk click on to the fact these machines are incredible value for money. For they are asking for them with driveaway pricing, it puts the competition to shame really.Purchased in July 2021 for $39,990.00.

In The last 5 years by SsangYong rexton has had it's fan belt either partially or fully wrapped up in the motor. last Friday week they just replaced my fan belt and also a couple of the small flywheels one was very flaky and the other was really rough on one edge I think they've replaced it with a smoother one. Is 1 meant to be really rough on the edge? And last Tuesday part of the fan belt was chewed up again. Do you have any solutions to this problem?thank you.
1 answer
I had similar issues, replaced belt and again within a week it shredded turned out to be the belt tensioner once this was replaced problem fixed you can get new one for about $350 fitted yourself or about double that if you have a mechanic do it.
