. Never again..
Performance on the low side.
Handles like a rocking chair
Noise reasonable
Finish is acceptable.
Interior is acceptable.
Reliability is good for travel to the corner shop. Running costs OK..
The vehicle is reasonable but the Service supplied by the Importers with Roadside call centre is hopeless they have no idea whatsovever. Availability of Spare Parts and price for same are shockers so make sure you dont breakdown too far away from home. Oh by the way forget the warranty and I think the National Service Manager is rude arrogant and indifferent.

Not a bad car. Just some slight issues.
Hey, I think my engine power relay needs to be replaced. My SsangYong over heats to the top of the red and the engine light comes on. It only does it every so often though. I was just wondering how much it costs to get replaced? And where the best mechanic for SsangYong's in Brisbane is to get it done? Thanks Heaps.

Awesome vehicle
For anyone that is interested in a seriously good value for money true 4 x 4 + 7 seater and great towing capacity I highly recommend this vehicle. Great value for money!! Solid vehicle, drives beautifully, great power, turning circle great for larger vehicle, did several months of research and no vehicle came close to this price range, so thanks to those on this site for your reviews as it was what influenced me into test driving one. Reading reviews, I thought OK fuel economy could be great but the husband and I did 3 weeks worth of running ...Read more
backwards and forwards to work, country driving and cruising and the refill on empty was $83.. Looking forward to towing the boat, will review again once we try it. Alan from Ssanyong Newspot Adelaide sold us the vehicle and gave us a great price, great guy to deal with, so if you are interested call in and see him and ask for a test drive, I know you wont be disappointed.

Rexton W - Just brilliant
This is my fourth Ssangyong and it is the best by far, I purchased it in June 2014 and it has not had one single even slight issue.
The new generation 2.0 diesel is smooth, powerful, quiet and economical around town to drive. It tows my 17 foot 1300 kg caravan at 100 km/h with no worries and the silky 5 speed auto does a really great job of ensuring the car is always in the right gear at the right time.
Full chassis, rear drive on road with selectable 4wd that includes low range means that this is a proper old skool four wheel drive suited t...Read more
o towing and offroading. It's ride is very good for this type of vehicle - a massive improvement over the Kyron I traded on it. I am a big fan of sand driving and all the Ssangyongs I've owned have been fantastic for this - and I keep them stock apart from tyres. So far I have the only Rexton W in SA, but I certainly hope that more folk click on to the fact these machines are incredible value for money. For they are asking for them with driveaway pricing, it puts the competition to shame really.Purchased in July 2021 for A$39,990.00.

The Quiet Performer
We have owned our new Rexton for approximately a month. Initial impressions are that it is very comfortable, solid, smooth, refined and nimble and has a realistic towing capacity. The suspension copes well with all surfaces and handling is excellent for a large vehicle. Seats are comfortable and the driving position and general ergonomics are very good. We test drove the main competitors and came to the conclusion that the Rexton performed better in most key performance criteria (for me this was mechanical refinement, ride, handling and standar...Read more
d of finish) and was unbeatable in value for money criterion. I test drove a $70,000 Prado and in my opinion there is little difference in general performance. At sub $40,000 it is an exceptional vehicle and has the balance and poise of of a substantially more expensive vehicle. The only thing holding back sales of this vehicle is poor or non-existent promotion and marketing and unjustified consumer and 'journalistic' prejudice. Do yourself a favour and test drive with an open mind, you may be surprised.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Great vehicle
I have owned this vehicle for over two years and have had no problems as yet, the power is great and the gearbox (auto) is smooth. I have installed airbag suspension as I tow a pop top camper van and the ride and economy is excellent. After driving a Nissan Patrol for several years, this vehicle is like driving a limo. Now in its tenth year and still going strong with no problems at all. If Ssangyong put sat nav and reverse cameras in as standard I would even consider upgrading to a new one.
Overall features and power of engine
Limited knowledge of vehicle from dealers and parts suppliers

Pretty good car, awful resale
The Rexton is a good touring car, with reasonable handling for a 4WD, although the damping control from the shock absorbers is below standard. The lack of a trip computer on a car costing over $40,000 is unforgivable when they are common on sub-$20,000 cars (it is found on the next model up, the XVT, which is another $8-9,000 more expensive). The 7-seater arrangement is terrible, is usable only for small children and takes up valuable luggage space. I have removed mine, which gives an uneven floor with no tie-down points. The 5-seater had been ...Read more
discontinued from 2007, and would have sufficed for me although the rear air conditioning is useful. The interior is wall-to-wall black which is very hot in summer. It's also boring- even the trim is "carbon fibre". There are few places for oddments, and the glovebox and centre console are very small. The "carbon fibre" extends to the steering wheel which is fussy and annoying, as well as sweaty. A plain leather wheel would have been appreciated. The engine/gearbox combination is superb, but the Tipronic function is available both from the gearshift (which is rather "cheap and nasty") and with steering wheel buttons. I rarely use either. I live in the outback and see quite a few Rextons towing caravans so they must be good for that. Their tow limit is, however, low for the mass and power of the car. I have the factory towbar and this easily drags on suburban driveways- it would be hopeless offroad with a large effect on departure angle. While my car hasn't spent much time offroad it has done some beach work and was fine- once the tyre pressures were lowered. I've heard of issues with the Torque-on-Demand from a noise and reliability viewpoint but have had no issues with that on my car which has done 33,000km. There are some annoying issues with the TOD though- the car can only be towed with four wheels off the road, and all four tyres have to be replaced if sizes are to be altered from standard. As mentioned earlier the spare wheel is a pathetic "limited use" job yet all review I read prior to purchase clearly stated "full-sized spare". Full size it is- useful when crossing the Nullabor, NOT! Ssangyong ask nearly $1000 for an 18" alloy wheel like the rest, plus tyre cost!Purchased in July 2021 for A$44,000.00.

Bought a new one
Have had my 2005 Rexton Ltd about 6 weeks, resale value obviously not real good as I paid $32700 with 25000 kms and bought from a dealer. Good for the 2nd buyer. We are really pleased with the vehicle, gives excellent fuel consumption 9.5 - 10 Litres/100Km and seems to be well finished and performs well both on and off road and also looks good. Vehicle needs more promotion because most comments are " Who makes Rexton" or similar.
Would recommend anyone looking for a good quality 4X4 at an affordable price to take one for a test drive, dont be p...Read more

brilliant/reliable tow car
we bought a 2006 rexton brand new and it has served us well for a family 7 seater and the car has towed 2.5 tons for many trips interstate and locally .Its now just ticked over 100.000kms and still strong, still towing long distance .it is nearly due for a new clutch as expected working hard most of its life.
reliable, efficient
some sensor trouble on glow plugs and parts sourcing

Love our Rexton
Owned our 2009 Rexton for 18 mths now and just love it. Perfect size for all our applications with excellent use of interior space. Quality interior, great seats and appointments.
Engine is a dream; smooth, powerful and efficient - great towing vehicle. Very competent at high speed and overtaking. Such a smooth and quiet car and surpasses all the Hilux, Prado, Patrol, Landcruiser, Rodeo, Triton, Navara vehicles that I have either used extensively for work or leisure.
The only downside has been the lack of overall travel and total ...Read more
load bearing in the suspension. Changing it out for Dobinson springs which really make a difference. Same advice for Actyon and Kyron which are great cars too which family and friends drive. Excellent handling and maneuverability along with a lack of rattles and solid off-raod performance. Just hoping Ssangyong decide to market the new model in Australia. Quality, driving performance and pleasure. Relatively low purchase cost compared to other comparable 4WD cars Limited off-road and heavy load suspension but easy to correct.Similar opinion? will buy another
had our 2006 for 5 years, bought second hand. Put nearly 300,000 kms on it, has really worked hard and rarely missed a beat. Some odd issues with lights coming on at off times, turns out to be sensor problems rather than anything major. Diesel needs proper service intervals to avoind clatter. Kids have tried to trash it, been on 1000km drives with it, packed the dogs in it, load for the tip etc and can still take the boss out in it.
10L/100km amazingly consistent, rugged, looks good, cheap to buy
some services expensive, don't like warning lights coming on, 3rd row seats too tight for teens, don't like the car forgetting to take off sometimes when you are in a hurry

You guessed it, the clutch is broken again. 4 clutches in 27 months and only 24000klms. What is wrong with this car. I guess it is time to let it go and purchase an ozzie car. It looks good - a lovely car but nothing but problems with the clutch.

No warranty service - just a useless piece of paper

Great car. Purchased new in 2006. Was 2005 badged. RX270XDi
Vehicle has done 150000km. Has been used as a comuter vehicle as well as beach work. Has not failed in any way. Very good on fuel. Purchase fuel filters from DELPHI distributor. Much cheaper than from SSangyong Dealer. Oil filter over the counter from parts specialist. My mate purchased 1 after my recommendation.
Powerful, fuel efficient real goer. Everything works.
Tyre size hard to find. Shocks leave a lot to be desired.

300k update 9 years
I bought this car at a charity auction as there were no bids for it, initially there was a clutch and fuel gauge issue that was repaired promptly. Since then it has been a farm runabout with a lot of city work, hit 3 kangaroos and been momentarily under sea water, (big wave on the beach). The engine (2.9l diesel) has chugged along tirelessly. Fuel economy has been 8l/100km on long runs (95-100km/hr best economy) and tows 100km/h easily. Service every 20000km. Has been very reliable but as there is no resale or trade in value, I will try for 400k then take the $50 scrap value and try a Great Wall ute

Good
My 09 Rexton is a lovely car to drive but the quality of material lets it down. I had a flat wheel on a holiday trip and had to fit the spare. The next town was about 150km away, which meant I had to do 80km/hr with the tracksion control going crazy due to the spare being a tiny bit smaller (rolling radius)than the standard 255/75/16 alloy wheels.-Not pleasant at all as the esp tried to put brake pressure on the wheel with the spare on.
Fuel consumption is very good 8.5-9.0 lt/100kmNice comfortable drive.
Stupid sparewheel and 7-seat arrangement.Stitching on passenger seat coming undone.Cheap feeling plastic's.Why put the jack under the seat??

Hi Lance68, did yiu find out where to purchase a spare wheel to replace the "space saver"?? i would also like to get one. I need a 255/60/18.
Umm, the words USER ERROR come to mind with your complaint. All you needed to do is turn off esp / traction control until you repaired the tyre. I always turn it off in situations like sand driving.

Love the car. Excellent all rounder.
Love our Rexton and had both series I and II. Preivously drove a Merc ML320 and the Rexton is very similar (the parts are a lot cheaper despite similar technology!)
Current Rexton is a 2007 Rexton II RX270 Manual with 60,000kms. Excellent fuel economy (9L / 100kms) No issues to date but I agree that a coil spring and shocker upgrage is a must for Aust conditions. Doesn't matter what brand you buy just spend the $1000 odd dollars to get new gas shocks and stiffer coils.
Most of the issues that people experience are due to the Dealer netwo...Read more
rk not the vehicle. Most Dealers struggle to see enough vehicles to accurately diognose faults and SsangYong Aust provides limited support. Even SsangYong dealers don't want to give a decent trade in price despite selling the car later at a huge profit. They have a huge margin on the new cars so they expect a large margin on used. Common issues are wheel alignment (no-one has accurate specs not even the alignment specialists or SsangYong themselves), Delphi injectors can sometimes give trouble (Aust Dealer's charge $1700 odd each vs $400-500 if you buy genuine Delphi units tfrom Korea), spare keys and consumables are rediculously expensive from the dealers..... buy on-line from OS, much cheaper and still genuine parts! Overall, If you're prepared to do your own parts buying and try a few dealers to find the best, you should have a long and positive relationship with your SsangYong. Efficient, Beautifully Styled, Excellent Tow Vehicle, Excellent Diesel Engine Expensive parts (from Aust Dealers only) Lack of info from SsangYong Aust.4 comments

OK
I am worried about resale value when i come to get rid of it next year. I would look at a new model but it would depend on what I was offered as a trade in.
I have liked owning and driving it.
The fuel gauge does not go back to full when you fill the tank(diesel). they tell me it is a common problem but don,t have a fix for it.

I have bad luck with cars
The car had done me good for 6 years i must admit but the design of the small features is utterly disgraceful, recently i have had both my keys break on me due to the weak plastic and huge plastic key (open/close button), i now am in the process of praying that the local mechanic up in regional WA will fix it other wise i have to get it trucked down south.
