What a fun car to own and drive. :) It was always great around town and on long trips. Used to do 13hr/1,200kms+ trips from Qld to Nsw, plenty of power on tap when needed. This car could go anywhere, shops, offroad beach driving, drag strip, it did it all. :)
Ok all this positive stuff is getting boring... what issues did i have? :)
Bought the car with 100,000kms on the clock, around 160,000kms it started burning oil, when i sold it, it was burning 500ml of oil every 2,000kms. According to Subaru this is perfectly fine. I have spoken with...Read more
Lots of 2.5T subaru owners, and it seems that most burn oil. But i also own a 2003 wrx sti with a EJ207 2ltr turbo motor and it burns No oil. If you do your own servicing like myself and regularly check it you will be fine. :) Another thing is Secondary Air Pump Failure, can be expensive to fix, but there is cheap ways to fix it. please click the link for a write up i did on the Forester fourms. http://ozfoz.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=43707&sid=51e0fb428f0aabc99243315711bc1090 Fuel wise: 60L tank, only ever used BP 98. Best i did was 9.3ltr/100kms,500-550kms per tank on the highway driving like a grandma. Otherwise around town except 400/450kms a tank before fuel light comes, depends on the right foot.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

The worst car I have driven in a long time.
This car is by far the worst car I have driven in sometime. Bought new in 2016, built 2015 there are constant issues. The temperate gauge stopped working. The horn stopped working. It grinds and has power loss when reversing and it's cold or is under pressure towing a trailer. Servicing is expensive. The boot doesn't shut when there is a tiny piece of grass sitting across the seal. The motor cuts out when idling, put your foot down to move forward at a round about or lights and it takes so long to take off that vehicles nearly hit you, scary. T...Read more
echnology taken too far. It has more beeps, alarms and wanting sounds than an air traffic control centre. I would never buy another. I could never reccomend this car. After coming from a Honda this is a disapointing car to say the least. This is a difficult car. The dealership in Albury are impossible to deal with. Rude and unhelpful. Stay clear. No issues with new cars. What a joke Subaru.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Better than a lot of newer cars
Drives smoothly and handles very well. Is very responsive even under light acceleration. Interior is quite nice and very fashionable for its time. Outside lines are a little plain but still better than much of what was released around that time. Overall the economy is good and it is such a pleasure to drive, both in handling and responsiveness, with a quiet smooth ride as bonus.

We Love It
Purchased this car due to the coming of our LOs and so far we have a great experience driving with this. Great technology, spacious and nice interior. One thing I like the least is the touch screen, it's very laggy and takes a while to process, even taking more than 5 seconds to pick up a phone call.

Excellent Car
The 04 Forester XT (SG) does not disappoint. It has an AWD 2.5L 4 cylinder turbocharged engine pushing out approx. 110kw atw. It is reliable, sturdy and has very good handling. The turbo version provides approximately 350-400km on a full tank of 98RON which is the absolute recommended fuel for this vehicle, given it is turbocharged.
Why don't you get one and feel the power of the boxer engine and the turbo push you back into your seat?

Great all rounder with good reliability
Great car for everyday as well as getting out on the weekend. XT is relatively fast but handling is a little sloppy. The luxury model has a nice interior with a sunroof and leather seats but the stereo will likely need upgrading. Reliability thus far has been good with no major issues.

Great car
As the first owner of the car, I have been driving this car for about a year and so far have no issues with it.
My previous car was a Lexus RX330 and it was very expensive to maintain. Anyways, although I prefer the exterior of the Lexus over the Subaru, the interior does not disappoint. I absolutely love everything about the interior, as it is spacious, comfortable, easy to clean and very high tech. Also the fuel consumption is good for an SUV.

A station wagon with off roading capabilites
The 2006 MY07 Subaru Forester XS is our second forester, replacing our old 1998 GX, we were originally going to look for an XT but this beautiful black with beige cloth interior XS stumbled upon us and it was difficult to say no to it. The XS in the MY07 model includes a rear roof mounted spoiler, tinted windows, climate air conditioning, 6 disc changer and a few changes in the interior including the gear shifter. The performance with the 2.5l Boxer engine is fantastic, it can do 0-100 according to Subaru in 10 seconds, but we think it's a lot...Read more
quicker. The handling is good, noise is fairly quiet. I like the interior alot, only there is not much room at all in the back seat so it is not good for a massive family. Overall the 2nd generation Forester was fantastic.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Meets all my needs. Have owned various makes of vehicles and this subaru is my favorite suv.
The 2.5L can keep up with all other suv in this category. Comfortable and reliable on long trips
Heavy on fuel on short trips. Freeway good, 8.5L
Per 100k.
Happy with my choice

As good as it gets for the price.
I have loved this car since new, it's the 2007 XT. It handles like a dream, goes like a rocket with the 2.5 litre turbo engine and the fuel economy is reasonable averaging 10 litres per 100km although it does need premium ULP. It easily towes a 24ft. boat and the interior space is enough for a couple or small family. There is one major issue though which is common with tubocharged Subarus. When just out of warranty, the secondary air system failed which causes the engine light to come on and the cruise control becomes inoperative. Was quoted $4...Read more
,000 to fix. As this system is very unimportant I chose to leave it as is. Still love the car even without cruise. It is a drivers car. The great all-Rounder 2006 XT
Having owned this car for almost 7yrs and done over 100,000kms I have to say it has been a great car.
The car truely is the best all rounder with performance, comfort, space, and usability.
Considering the way I drive it and it always being parked outside, I have had only a few minor annoying problems.
1. Drivers window switch and motor broke twice and needed repair (common fault it seems)
2. Rear self leveling suspension died - mainly due to dirt roads I assume
3. Wind noise from pillarless doors (later discovered a very easy fix)
4. CD stacker jammed (another common fault apparently)
5. Front CV joints needed to be replaced (again dirt roads and water are their enemy but my friend)

Reliable Subaru Forester 2006
We have been driving this car for 2 years. Bought at mileage 150K. Still going strong. Reliable family car. Camping twice a year, loading 2.5 seater kayak, family with three teenagers, no problem. Decent fuel economy. The only reason not to give 5 star is the boot space is not very generous compared to other SUV such as Outlander.

Sold to my son- still going well
Excellent build quality. Good visibility (take out cargo barrier.
Dealer service over-priced at $330. Will get done privately.
Quiet ride. Cruise control unnatural feel (better on Outlander).
Creature comforts basic.
Hate electric windows that need ignition on. Citroen does it better allowing windows to be closed after switching off motor.
great grip on road.good fuel economy < 9.5L/100 (auto)Not as high as 2008+ model.Low centre of gravity, so less likely to roll over than other 4WDs.
Auto accelerator touchy- Camry is better.Plastic dash panel scratches easily.Rattly cargo barrier/cover blind.Tyres Geolandar wore unevenly under 40 000 probably due to poor alignment.

Great car, practical, easy and great to drive, our 2nd subaru in 12 years.
We had our old L series for 12 years and naturally looked at updating to Forester.Checked out the competition but you cant go past the solid and reliable Forester.
Ours is a 2006 X Auto a former NSW ambulance car with bull bar and cage.We bought it from Moorebank car auctions and have just had it for a year.Done some big trips in it and mainly does round town, its a little thirsty but you don't buy a Subaru for economy.
Best roof racks are Thules (got ours 2nd hand off ebay) and the cargo barrier is a must, especially if you have little ones ...Read more

Update, owed the car for around 3 years 60000kms or so.Have now sold the car, put 2 secondhand air conditioners in both had same issue. new subaru compressor are $1000 or so aftermarket $700. The Dreaded Head Gasket
Great car. Functional, comfortable. Ours is a 2003/2004 model and we have owned it since new. It's always been serviced on time and it's done 140,000kms with a lot of that driving around Sydney, and many interstate trips Sydney - Brisbane, Sydney - Adelaide, Sydney- Canberra. We have just discovered a faulty RHS head gasket, and after a lot of detailed checking and counter checking with several experts we are up for a repair bill of around $3,000. Not avoidable as we wish to do many more kms in this car. Apparently some of this model had fault...Read more
y head gaskets which can reveal themselves at around 140,000kms. Subaru corrected the problem in later production. We are not happy and unfortunately have to bear the cost. We expected better as we have owned 5 Subarus previously, all trouble free. So if you're thinking of buying a 2003/2004 Forester, have a mechanic put it on the hoist and inspect around the head gaskets. Comfortable, reliable and very functional. Reasonable economy averaging at about 10kms/litre overall city and country. Can get noise transference into the cabin on some surfaces with highway driving. The head gasket problem was unforeseen and we deeply annoying due to cost and the fact that we have always serviced the car on time. Since publishing the paragraphs above we have continued to own the car until last month. We did an additional 50,000 kms in it taking the total to 190,000 kms approx, all trouble free - brilliant. It was still performing flawlessly. When we sold it we achieved a good price which confirms that these cars have good resales value.Purchased in October 2021 at McGrath Subaru.

OK, but buy a RAV4 or XV instead if you can afford it
Good: The Boxer engine is extemely reliable, the AWD system makes driving in slippery and/or wet conditions very safe. Very attractive black leather seats and interior trim, endless convenient storage containers, including 2 for sunglasses, great factory soundsystem, put down the back seat and there is endless room in the back. I towed a heavy, fully loaded trailer from Sunshine Coast to Newcastle with the back also full (moving places) and it was effortless. Very stylish design, although the front end IMO looks like a Cylon from the 1979 Bat...Read more
tlestar Galactica movie. 200mm ground clearance will get you over most obstacles on dirt roads that this car is reasonably capable of, and the AWD will give you confidence on dirt roads and some places you shouldnt have driven to, but don't push it. Fairly good highway milage and very quiet. Steering fantastic. Bad: DO NOT buy a Forester if you're intenting to do fairly frequent dirt road driving. Not real off roading, but just rough dirt roads are the limit for this car. If this vehicle had comparable suspension to the Toyota RAV4 it would be a world beater, but on suspension alone I would not recommend buying this vehicle if you intended going dirt fairly often. On a well graded dirt road this car is unbeatable, but as conditions deteriorate you will discover how hard and unforgiving the suspension is and completely unsuited to most Australian dirt roads. Corrugations? Forget it. Turn around and go home - you'll wreck your car and bring out a multituide of rattles. Also, after a trip out west, the windshield developed a spreading crack just from the dirt road vibrations which will require complete replacement. Headlight bulbs seem to burn out fairly regularly. Weird dull knocking noise developed in front suspension after dirt road driving. Although a very attractive design, it is too big for a single persion, too small for a family, not much room in back seats for regular or long trips with four people. If you are a single person looking for a small, SUV station wagon to go bush get a Subaru XV instead, if you have kids, get a RAV4 instead. OK highway milage, but thirsty in the city.1 comment

Unacceptable
Bought a 2006 Forrester XL (low end of range). Interior space and roof makes it very versatile for runs to tip and hardware store. Have never hooked up a trailer to it. Have never taken it off-road. Have always tried to drive it sensibly (ie, tach < 3,000 rpm)--youngest driver in the family is 50. Have serviced the vehicle per the Subaru schedule, with the selling dealership. Now has 100,000km after 6.5 yrs, and dealership informs us it needs $1800 worth of work for head seal/oil loss problem. Totally unexpected, and probably a harbinger - residual value of the car has taken a $5k hit and will likely be worthless in another 25,000-50,000km. Unacceptable. Will not buy another Subaru.

I am looking to buy Forester which is 2008 and driven 220ks, Is it recommended to buy such high ks in petrol with 2.5 lts engine?
4 answers
Hey, i dont know a huge amount about cars. But as long as the car is well looked after it should be ok. But that is high kms for a 2008 model.
Make sure the timing belt has been changed.
Check the service history, if not consult a mechanic that you trust to give the car a going over.
Thats not a big mileage these days but just ensure that the service history is up to scratch and as previously mentioned the timing belt has been changed i know of a 2009 model that has nearly 450,000 km on the clock that has only had consumables replaced and is immaculate
