    Engine can go terribly wrong

    published

Brought an outback new in 2000. reasonably ok most of the time but plastics frayed easily, parts were expensive and the engine blew a head gasket while travelling on the highway between Geelong and Melbourne. Had about 98000 ks on the odo. Never touched another Subaru again. Discovered it was a design fault in the engine. Mechanic said Outback engines are not tough as they are meant to be.

Nice cars to drive both on and off road. Dislike where the car aerial is if you break the rear window its costly. Getting around 700-800km out of 45l tank its awesome. Love my Subaru, they all have there good and bad points just like any car, its personal preference. A lot of people say the 2.5l are sluggish on hills iv never had a problem with hills like I did in my 3.2l v6 holden jackaroo, it was a pig at hills.

    Just love it

    published

Handling on this car is superb, great handling on snow, dirt, mud and the road.
The interior is great, all leather options, easy to find, easy to use, everything is right at the drivers touch. Both sunroofs are great. Legroom in the front is great, for the longer legged people leg space in the back is mediocre.
Climate controlled heater/air conditioner which automatically senses where it needs to go and you can manually override it if you need to.
Middle seatbelt in the back is not great, it is a unique style being pulled from the roof lining.
Average of 10 litres per 100Kms which is great for a 3 litre petrol engine.

    Great car, very solid

    published

I bought this car second hand, and have found it to be a great reliable car which is very solid, unfortunately it had previously been involved in an accident with a truck which collided with the drivers door, however to it's credit only the door was damaged, there was no ripples or any other damage to other parts of the body, a door from the wreckers had it back to as good as new. a very solid and reliable car

We have the H6 6 cylinder outback. Purchased second hand with $170kms on it and very happy with it for the last 6mnths. Seems to jump a little bit going between 2nd and 3rd, otherwise drives great, No issues so far, wife is happy, lots of room and creature comforts.

Second Sub I have owned and not going to be the last

    published

The last Subaru I owned for 9 years was a 1991 L Series wagon that was just terrific. I liked it so much that I replaced it with a bit more luxurious 2001 Outback (185K on the clock) which I have now had for 5 years. Though I do only 10K a year in it mostly for longer trips it has been just excellent. All the features still work perfectly, there is no rust on the vehicle and the paint is still excellent.

After owning two Subaru's I would have to vouch for them as being the brand I have had to do to least repairs to.
    Reliability. Performance feul economy.

Do not buy warning ! Warning ! Warning !

    published

My wife and I bought a Subaru Outback (MYOO) from a Sydney dealer 2 years ago, we have had the car log book serviced on time every time and stamped by the Subaru dealers and approved after warranty mechanics, we purchased the car at 155k, the same car has now done only 176k, it has been leaking coolant from the back of the motor, 2 mechanics have told us that the Subaru outbacks from 2000 to 2003 had a weak cylinder heads, the cost of getting the repair done ( exchanged head ) is $4,800 !, needless to say I am not impressed and I will not be buying or purchasing another Subaru product ever again.

Very expensive to repair, a Friday made car, fuel hungry, weak cylinder head, prone to cracking

Would agree with all this including fuel guzzling disposition. However I have leather seats and its a very comfortable ride...still might do a change over before it sends me broke.

Outback engines are not as tough as would be expected. Best to dump the car.

    Outback 2GEN (1998-2003)

My friend purchased a 2003 Subaru Outback that has been in New Mexico at 5240 ft. altitude the entire time. Now, when he attempts to drive it to a higher 8424 ft. altitude it stalls out. Once I come to clear the engine codes it runs until he drives back to the higher altitude. The codes read rich and lean fuel in three cylinders, misfires, and high temperatures. Is there a high altitude program that I can download to his car that will help this problem ?
