Engine can go terribly wrong
Brought an outback new in 2000. reasonably ok most of the time but plastics frayed easily, parts were expensive and the engine blew a head gasket while travelling on the highway between Geelong and Melbourne. Had about 98000 ks on the odo. Never touched another Subaru again. Discovered it was a design fault in the engine. Mechanic said Outback engines are not tough as they are meant to be.

brilliant
Nice cars to drive both on and off road. Dislike where the car aerial is if you break the rear window its costly. Getting around 700-800km out of 45l tank its awesome. Love my Subaru, they all have there good and bad points just like any car, its personal preference. A lot of people say the 2.5l are sluggish on hills iv never had a problem with hills like I did in my 3.2l v6 holden jackaroo, it was a pig at hills.

Just love it
Handling on this car is superb, great handling on snow, dirt, mud and the road.
The interior is great, all leather options, easy to find, easy to use, everything is right at the drivers touch. Both sunroofs are great. Legroom in the front is great, for the longer legged people leg space in the back is mediocre.
Climate controlled heater/air conditioner which automatically senses where it needs to go and you can manually override it if you need to.
Middle seatbelt in the back is not great, it is a unique style being pulled from the roof lining.
Average of 10 litres per 100Kms which is great for a 3 litre petrol engine.

Great car, very solid
I bought this car second hand, and have found it to be a great reliable car which is very solid, unfortunately it had previously been involved in an accident with a truck which collided with the drivers door, however to it's credit only the door was damaged, there was no ripples or any other damage to other parts of the body, a door from the wreckers had it back to as good as new. a very solid and reliable car

1997 Subaru Outback a capable performer
Purchased at 270,000km from a family member, who had it since 90,000km. It's been bashed around, internally (dogs, equipment, people) and externally (off-road, camping adventures around NSW) and yet it just keeps going. We go 4WDing and it goes most places the big boys can go. It's only off-road limitation is ground clearance, which means really rocky ascents and descents require some skill and the occasional piece of wood.
This Subaru Outback is a solid performer as a second vehicle and off-road machine. We keep it well-serviced but it's no...Read more
t otherwise a drain on cash. It doesn't have any oil issues, though some Subaru owners do report oil loss when these machines get into the 300Ks an onwards. We thought the Outback would pack it in by now - it's been well-used and we're not expecting it to just keep going forever. And yet it has and does... Subaru knew how to make vehicles when the Outback was launched. It's a highly-capable piece of machinery that makes some big 4WDs look cumbersome and a bit surplus to requirements.Similar opinion? 280,000km 3 years after I owned it
I bought my 2002 outback 2.5 manual 3 years ago from an auction. I have since put around 60,000 on the clock and even drove it across the Nullabour from Sydney to Perth in it. Absolutely love it so far. Apart from your usual maintenance and wear and tear items, hasn't had anything go wrong with the car. Having said that, the car did have it's head gasket replaced by the previous owner (which is known to fail) and I changed the radiator shortly after ownership. For anyone looking into getting one, certainly proceed with caution if there's no sig...Read more
n of a replaced h/g. The car drives and handles extremely well, comfy seats and ride quality makes it perfect for long distance driving. Averages out roughly 11 L/100k city and 9 on the highway, which is semi decent in my opinion considering the age and size of the car. The n/a engine is underpowered by today's standard and the grunt comes in at a later stage of the powerband than you would've expect.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

The surfers car but seat bracket dings boards when seats down ok youngns! Rule1.Get regular servicing at least 10kkm or yearly you've been warned !
12.5 km/litre highway 10km/ litre around town (which is a beach)We update to an 8 to 10 year old Sub every 5 years and our 2000 2.5L model was excellent . I know head gaskets go but we rushed ours to a radiator specialist as soon as the temp gauge went above horizontal and saved it . He said the radiator elements are thin and get gunky. Put another 100thou km on after that ! Our original clutch was...Read more

Great all rounder
2002 manual 2.5 petrol. drove the car for a year, was my second Subaru and just like the first the car went well with very little fuss. good engine although a little wheezy down low. not bad on fuel and the awd comes in handy in the snow and on the beach, great for surfing, snowboarding and walking. a great go anywhere car with good on road handling but also capable with light to medium off road use with the right tyres and enough care and attention. the boot space is great and the seats are comfortable although the awd cuts in the passenger fo...Read more
ot space. good amount of storage. higher then average service cost, i found this the case with all my subarus before and after, this one needed a clutch replaced at 130thousand km's, other then that it was perfect and very well priced. space, fuel economy, awd, very well thought out interior, good on road, capable off road. high service costs, dull engine.Similar opinion? Second Sub I have owned and not going to be the last
The last Subaru I owned for 9 years was a 1991 L Series wagon that was just terrific. I liked it so much that I replaced it with a bit more luxurious 2001 Outback (185K on the clock) which I have now had for 5 years. Though I do only 10K a year in it mostly for longer trips it has been just excellent. All the features still work perfectly, there is no rust on the vehicle and the paint is still excellent.
After owning two Subaru's I would have to vouch for them as being the brand I have had to do to least repairs to.
Reliability. Performance feul economy.

This is for a Subaru Outback 2002 (MY03) H6 3.0L GX.
It is probably the best vehicle we have ever owned and we are up to 27. Used to change vehicles regularly as could never afford a new car. This is our 5th Subaru and 2nd Outback. The first one was a 99 2.5L we kept for 5 years (very good and set the benchmark on cars for us).
The 3.0L H6 raises the bar and is a much nice machine to drive but was out of our reach before.
We love the dark grey sued interior with the momo steering wheel and beautiful insrument dash.
Highly recommend this ve...Read more

Good
I like this car because it's close to my heart. I maintain it well and will continue to do so and hope to have a long and happy life with it. Hoping to et 400K out of it!
We have the MY01 GenIII Outback limited. Comes with woodgrain trim, all power options, sunroof etc. Leather trim is a dream to clean from all the messy kid spillages and Extra power outputs are very handy and the vehicle handles road and dirt/grass with ease on road tyres. The AWD system seems very capable and would be quite excited to fit a set of cooper off road tyres onto i...Read more

Excellent
As above.. the quality of finish is remarkable, the mechanical performance has been exceptional. Car has now done over 120,000K without a problem. The extra power outlet in the cargo bay is thoughtful and ideal for running a fridge or charging a mobile if the front outlet is running a GPS. Auto transmission changes gear smoothly even while towing but does not experience excessive changes. My wife loves to drive the car and even does her share of the towing willingly
The finish is superb, both interior and exterior. I have the auto 2.5 outback li...Read more

Do not buy warning ! Warning ! Warning !
My wife and I bought a Subaru Outback (MYOO) from a Sydney dealer 2 years ago, we have had the car log book serviced on time every time and stamped by the Subaru dealers and approved after warranty mechanics, we purchased the car at 155k, the same car has now done only 176k, it has been leaking coolant from the back of the motor, 2 mechanics have told us that the Subaru outbacks from 2000 to 2003 had a weak cylinder heads, the cost of getting the repair done ( exchanged head ) is $4,800 !, needless to say I am not impressed and I will not be buying or purchasing another Subaru product ever again.
Very expensive to repair, a Friday made car, fuel hungry, weak cylinder head, prone to cracking

Would agree with all this including fuel guzzling disposition. However I have leather seats and its a very comfortable ride...still might do a change over before it sends me broke.
Get rid of it before it blows a head gasket.
Footnote : we got rid of the car from research it seems that because the battery is on the right side ( standing front facing the grille ), it sets up a electrolysis on the right side of the engine (... Read more
all the MY00 Subarus that have head gasket coolant leaks are on the right side ), the engine gasket is a special alloy, I have spoken to 5 specialist mechanics who all say the same thing. The problem was fixed after 2003 when the newer body shape came out.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Good
We bought our 2002 Outback 2.5 in 2004 and were amazed at the quality and quietness of the car at the time. Once we had had the car for a few weeks, we realised the dark paint is impossible to stay clean and chips and cracks fast. At 180,000km, the headgasket blew in the car, much to our disappointment. Since it has been fixed the engine has made vibrations in the car and the power switch has broken. The engine needs a turbo as it needs more power and the rear seat belt locks are a constant pain. Although the car has had its problems, the desig...Read more
n for the car is brilliant although it is a 4 seat car(the middle seat is very narrow). We love Subaru and hope any other Subaru's we have in the future lift the bar in refinement. All Wheel Drive, higher ground clearance than a normal car, for time luxurious. Dark paint and skirting chips and cracks fast. could use a 5 speed auto, turning circle of a truck, rear middle seat is narrow.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
00 Model Outback Limited Wagon
Sunroof unit replaced, excesive oil consumption, dealer told within subaru specs, (had potential to run out of oil between services) in the end the motor was pulled out and was told the rings had been put in upside down when it was built, kept monitoring oil usage, didnt improve, in the region of 500ml per 1000 km, motor pulled apart again, now the gaps in the rings had lined up, i asked for replacement engine but nothing, then gearbox/centre diff replaced, but given back with a whining noise that dealer insists was there in the begining (no it...Read more
wasnt me), after writing to subaru head office and fuji heavy industries it fell on deaf ears, mind you this was all done under warranty, when the timing belts had to be changed subaru didnt have them in stock as no one had put 75k on a subaru as quick as myself so they werent in Aus yet i did have 2 subarus, after this episode i sold 1, still have the dud, but touch wood, as i dont do the miles now its still going OK and has been good. Thanks Subaru for your warranty work, but as far as care factor goes dont think there was any in the end,(from my dealer anyway) and since i am only one person what does one unhappy customer matter, hopefully a bit more now that i have found this site. Outback 2.5i: its now done over 240K see above, + needs more head room, leg room, not real flash if you are 6ft 2 plusSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

My friend purchased a 2003 Subaru Outback that has been in New Mexico at 5240 ft. altitude the entire time. Now, when he attempts to drive it to a higher 8424 ft. altitude it stalls out. Once I come to clear the engine codes it runs until he drives back to the higher altitude. The codes read rich and lean fuel in three cylinders, misfires, and high temperatures. Is there a high altitude program that I can download to his car that will help this problem ?
