First car and I'm in love
Super reliable, good on fuel, nice size without being huge and also quite pleasant to drive. Sadly it doesn't have turbo which I'd have loved, but that's what I get for buying used I guess. The car is really comfy and does everything you need a car to do while looking great and feeling great at the same time.

Great car
There's a little bit of deadness around centre steering wheel which is great for offroading. This car has so much grip on the loose dirt, it's amazing. The torque figures are great and makes going up hills or over small banks (under 30 cm for ride height) excellent. The AWD is a load of fun. Inside comfort is great, as good as I've ever had. The clutch is of decent weighting, not too heavy but not light either - about the same as a Commodore or Camry.
Glad I bought it

Solid vehicle
Great car, extremely well built.
You don't realise how poor some cars are bolted together until you drive a Subaru.
Not the most powerful cars or the most efficient however they are a rugged design.
Bought Outback after Forester became too small.
Would definitely buy another, pity they no longer have frameless doors.

Dash noises vent issues quick fix
One of the few problem with the 05 Subs is a vent actuator problem that starts as a fluttering noise when you turn your car off, then later buzzing noise by which time you can't select demist or foot mode-Unhinge glove box after pulling off door side cover, unhook thread, pull out two top book boxes above glove compartment-will take wiggling and you'll hear and see the vent actuator motor behind and to the centre that can be lubricated or removed- you don't have to remove the dash!

Fantastic car!!!
Steering is light and car handles very well with AWD. Quiet and smooth on all accounts. Standard fuel efficiency and a neat interior although the roof lining is cream in colour and gets dirty very easily. A fantastic family car and head out and about to any terrain. Can be upgraded with 2017 technology for a small fee to include Bluetooth etc. The Sat Nav is excellent and still is great to use.

Awesome Car
Bloody love this Car, i needed a car with more space to fit all my surfboards, kites and ski gear and this car is perfect as an all rounder car. can go off road happily and will cruise around town and park in the city with ease. i was also surprised with how fuel efficient the car is.
very happy customer and will hopefully have this car for a long time.

Love It!
This car is so nice to drive, just the right size and nicely luxurious that I am having trouble picking a car to upgrade to. I've had this since March 2011 and it's now done nearly 150,000km with hardly an issue. I did get Subaru to reset the computer as it was getting a bit of a lag between foot down and take-off but this seems to have fixed the issue and that was over a year ago.
I've been looking at newer cars (not Subaru) and have found none with leather in as good a condition as the Subarus so they must have done something right there. Th...Read more

Over 100.000 KM nothing but expensive repairs
Bought the car new in 2008, now done 177.000 KM.
Just over 130.000 km the thrust bearing failed!! Replaced clutch, even though there was enough meat left on the plates to last me 200.000 Km.
Viscosity coupling failed! At 152.000 Km.
Drive shafts galore replacements, when car went over 100.000 KM, the left and right drive shafts replaced twice from 100.000 KM to 177.000 KM.
Now with 177.000 KM, Head Gaskets leaking, Engine light on, o2 sensor after CAT creates the fault.
Excessive oil use and I guess therefore the o2 sensor starts to compla...Read more

Subaru Outback - A good vehicle that could be made great
Brought a new Subaru Outback in 2005 and still have it after doing 160,000kms. Generally, a strong, well built and finished vehicle, nice to drive. Its a vehicle that has a 'pseudo' Volvo, BMW or, maybe a Mercedes feeling to it. A bit heavy on the fuel due to the Outback being a bit on the heavy side but that is the price one pays for a sold build.
The fact it is a true AWD station wagon configured vehicle, not an SUV with a brief case sized rear luggage area
The $1,100 servicing shock at 100,000kms. Poor after sales service. Lack of underbody protection. Electric door lock failure. CV joint boot damage due to poor underbody protection and the mass balancers in the engine flywheel giving up also. Not happy Subaru!

Why I dont think a new one is a good investment
I have an 02/03 outback.I have a servicing workshop[ CD and do it all myself. Its a 2.5 manual. Done 320 000 trouble free km, and dirt cheap too to keep on the road!. When i put in the first clutch i got an old plain flywheel from the wreckers and dumped the dual mass one. Reading these comments makes me think I should buy another 2.5 petrol non turbo manual, but you cant- they dropped it, so only diesel is available in manual. I have a theory that diesel saves you money on fuel, but you lose all your savings due to the troubles that modern high speed diesels can give.

Problems with dual mass fly wheel (2005 model)
My 2005 Outback developed problems with the dual mass fly wheel, at about 110,000 and this now requires replacement. I have had a Liberty wagon and an Outback previously, both of which went to over 200,000 km without problems. Other Subaru owners of about the same vintage have had similar problems, but Subaru refuses to acknowledge a design fault. It looks as if the quality of Subarus is on the way down, and I won't be buying another one.
Versatile soft roader.
Poorly engineered, and Subaru refuses to stand by their product.

Gotta love this wolf in sheeps clothing
OK, I went through hell evaluating all the soft roaders out there that purport to be good on the rough stuff. Seriously, they are all rubbish on anything apart from smooth gravel. Enter the Outback, what a surprise! As soon as I drove it, it felt rock solid, no height to wobble all over the place like the Captiva-barge, Santa Fe-came close, Kluger-way over rated, Xtrail-wannabe, etc..
Have had our 2008 Premium for over 1 year now and cannot help but be impressed everytime I get into it, which is not often as this is my wife's daily drive. T...Read more
ook it to Mudgee and the only other car going up and down the mountains and through the bogs/river was a Landcruiser with off road tyres. The Outback kept pace, lurched less, was let down only by the road tyres and needed about 5cm of more ground clearance. To say the Landcruiser owner stopped snickering and was mighty impressed would be an understatement. I was impressed! What a 4WD system, Subaru need to seriously sell this strength of the car, dead set secret. He could not believe what the Outback could do. Also used 1/2 the petrol of the Landcruiser too, slightly less space inside AND we had a roofrack. The good-space inside, premium fitout, love the huge sunroof, red lighting on dash, auto indicator on dash, strength of this thing-solid, takes any unleaded fuel and runs best on 10% methanol; The bad-2.5L too puny for towing 5M boat, also hills at 100klm/h loaded up causes auto to change down and engine to scream-better get the 3.6L next time, old 4 speed auto, big overhang at back hooked up on exits-the car not me, not much else really.1 comment

2004 2.5i
I owned a 99 Liberty (my intro to Suburu) and then got a 2004 Outback. I ran both cars pretty much into the ground. Loads of offroad (not Landcruiser style tracks) however loads of dirt roads and a few trails. Plus commuted on the bitumen.
The rawness has slowly been removed from the look and feel of Suburu models manufactured since 2003 and that was the appeal to me. (A cost effective able AWD that would actually perform on and off road). I likened them to an adventure tourer motorbike. Boot space could have been bigger and whilst the n...Read more

Excellent Fuel Economy, Relaxed Cruiser
Bought this last year to replace a Toyota Kluger, as I did not need a 7-seater, was looking for something slightly smaller. The unique boxer diesel is as miserly on fuel as reported elsewhere, sub 6s on country runs, my average is 6.4L/100kms over 40,000kms, about half what the Kluger used. I usually fill up every 850km or so, with the distance to empty showing about 100km. Roomy and airy cabin, but go for the premium with leather and sunroof, as the standard fabric looks cheap. On the road the AWD drivetrain is a revelation in the wet hills ar...Read more
ea, have driven nothing better than this ever, probably the main reason people stick to their Subies! Had some minor issues with the Diesel Particulate Filter active regen affecting driveability, but fixed first service. Gearing is very high, which makes low-speed maneuvering a bit difficult in 2nd, have to drop down to 1st, apparently this will be fixed on the new series. Overall one of the best cars I have ever owned. Fuel Economy, AWD Drivetrain, Roomy Interior Gearing in the lower gears is not quite right, needs a few revs off the line. Some minor issues witht the DPF, but fixed first service. Boot is a bit small for some, but ok for me.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Great Outback
We have a 2007 outback that has just clicked over 85000k's. It's been a great car, for our family. It tows the camper trailer though the auto needs to be used with the manual up/down selector to get the best out of the motor when touring through hilly areas.
We changed the rear coils to raise the rear end about 2 inches; it gave us a little more clearance in the bush when towing the camper. Its ok on beach sand when tyres are let down (10 to 15 psi) as it's quite a light car. Stereo sounds good but there's no aux-in for the ipod...Over all we have been pleased with the Scooby Doo. I'd buy another one, though I'll wait for the next model. Styling on the current model is ugly.
Reliable
Body panels are light and easily dented.

Great car, drives well, robust and mecanically very sound but we don't think we will buy buy another one.
Tows well but chews through the juice.
Just a lovely car to drive. Smooth and efficient. The 6 cylinder innovation gives a lot more grunt than the old 2.5L 4cyl.Well appointed and great storage. Has AWD capability without the expected 4WD ride. Holds road well and has just the right level of height off the road.
We don't drive it too hard but the fuel consumption is unexpectedly poor, apx 12L/100km on normal running but over 16L/100km when towing light loads. Manufacturer recommends Premium Unleaded only which is Pain in the A...

Cheap and tacky
I had a subaru Outback 1998 and this Outback 2006 is made much cheaper than the 98. I tripped over and hit the door with my elbow and put a dent in it! Same scenario in the interior. The stereo is molded behind the dash so you cant replace it and it doent have a line in or any means to connect a ipod, if you use a FM transmitter the quality is very low because the aerial is a printed aerial on the rear window.
Subaru are designing there cars to wear out! I will not buy another Subaru again.
I cant beleive there are so many 5 star reviews of this car, people must just love to tell you that what they have is great!
Looks good, hasn't broken down
Its cheap and tacky

ometimes the CVT gearbox can be a little sluggish. Some interior trim is a bit soft - dents from my elbow in door. Paddle shifts turn with steering wheel and make tipronic use awkward. Would be better with more intuitive gear lever mounted tiptronic. Otherwise a joy to own.get rid of it before it hits 180k. Great car until then, a dog after that.

The 2.5 litre version is a fantastic car and works a treat. It holds heaps of gear and is comfortable for five people. Also works okay off road and car take you places the average sedan couldn't. But if i was going to buy one again i would opt for the manual version. All up a great car.
It looks great, and the cabin is very comfortable. The reliable and i havent had to get anything major fixed since i bought it in 2004. Reasonbly good fuel eccomy of 7.2 litres per 100km (on our 2.5 litre model). Also there is literlly no road noise and flat four...Read more

This can is an excellent vehicle. It has loads of standard features and drives really well. The finish on the vehicle is excellent, far better quality than many other cars in the price range. Retained value on this car is also very good.
I have used this vehicle to tow 3 trail bike and 3 blokes and their gear without any problem.
I would definately recommend one of these to anybody wanting a reliable and safe family car.
Outback 2.5i Safety; Very well built car, standard features, drives well, tows well.
Lacks a little bottom end power, only 4 speed auto, I am 6'2" and I just fit in the drivers seat.

Am looking to buy an example with 200,000km. What are some things I should be looking for?
1 answer
I have never been a fan of REALLY high mileage cars. Nothing lasts for ever. I would look for an extremely well maintained vehicle that has complied rigorously with the service book with evidence of money spent like invoices. Check out the Subaru forums and ask those guys as there a lot of high mileage Subarus on there. In the meantime have it independently inspected on a hoist and keep fingers & toes crossed!

I bought a subaru outback h6 (the 6 cylinder version). It had 148k in the odo and car was in good condition. Only problem I have is the fuel consumption is very poor. I get arouns 20L/100 km. I.e it hardly clocks 300 km on a full tank. It runs on premium 98 fuel. Any clues why would that be? I dont think this is normal.

Assuming you don't drive it hard, you definitely have a car which is using a lot more than what it should. The first thing to do is check for petrol leaks.
No i dont drive harsh... i recently got my car inspected by a subaru specialist... they didnt find anything at all. Another mechanic told the air filter is high time to get changed. He will replace it soon. Will that be the cause?

Looking to buy a 2nd hand 2008 Outback 4-speed auto petrol with 170k. Higher KM due to country commuting. Anything I should watch out for in particular, aside from the basics of inspecting the oils and fluids, suspension, CV joints etc? It has full service history and major service was done at 120k. I'm aware of head gasket issues in these models, although they seem much more common on earlier models than the 2008+ ones.
I'm looking for a AWD wagon to use for weekend excursions and camping. The fuel economy and potentially expensive repairs they can require is a bit off putting. I currently own a 98 Delica 4WD van which is great, but too big and thirsty for what I need now.

Well its always best to get a qualified mechanic like nrma for pre purchase inspection. check the revs story, check about the smoke comeout from exhaust. The auto try to put on drive mode if the idle vibrate abnormal means the transmission problem gonna cost you problem and check for oil leak
Thanks Ay. I am quite thorough when it comes to car inspections and have avoided a few duds already. Will definitely get my mechanic to give it a good checkover before parting with my hard earned $.

Hey mate, was just wondering if you had any update on the car after it's had some more mileage put onto it?
I'm thinking of buying an 08 model with a little over 100,000km and was wondering how it fared at that range of mileage.
