Ok but not great!
Bought this car from new and while the engine has never let me down, I have had to replace all the central locking door actuators periodically as they fail and not all doors lock or unlock when pressing the key remote. It’s frustrating because Subaru never has the parts so it means 2 visits to the dealership each time! It’s done nearly 90,000kms now and I had to get the front struts replaced due to clicking and knocking noises. The only thing about the engine is how noisy it is when cold and revving so high. Same when you turn the engine off, i...Read more
t like it has run a marathon and it’s trying to rest. It ticks..... so annoying because it doesn’t sound healthy. Drivers seat is noisy and creaky from the poor quality leather and parts. It’s an ok car but I wouldn’t buy another Subaru, first and probably last for me. Everything is now fixed on it and working perfectly which is positive and they are easy to clean and maintain so I will sell it at 5 years or 100,000kms.Purchased in June 2021.

Still going strong
My XV was bought in 2012 when it first released in Australia. I was one of the lucky ones to drive the first shipment stock. After 6 years of driving it around, it still going strong without any machinically issue. It is so reliable that I decided not to upgrade it to the second generation XV. The CVT works very well with the 2.0 engine. I never use it for any towing so the CVT and 2.0 engine are just perfect for my daily urban travel and sometimes rural adventures. I guess my biggest dislike is the price to update the GPS but it is no big deal as Google Map is always there in my phone.

Really Disappointed
Bought Our XV New from a Dealer as we had a really Bad Experience with a Nissan X-Trail and as had previously owned Many Subaru's in or 30 years of Driving and were really Happy with our choice for a while. We have spent incredibly amounts of money since our Warranty has expired. Being now a 4 year car and only 100,000 km on the speedo we are looking at seriously Trading it in.
The air conditioning never seem to work properly from day one and cost us lots to fix after numerous times telling the Dealer initially of the problem in the early yea...Read more

Worst performing Japanese car I owned
This is the worst Japanese car I had. We traded in our 2002 Honda Jazz for a 2012 Subbie XV when it first came out. In the 5 years of ownership I had the following replaced
- 1x CVT Auto gear box in its 5th year ($3400) Out of Warranty
- 1x Leaking front right suspension ($600) Out of Warranty
- 1x Front left control arm bushing failing ($700) Out of Warranty
- 2x Battery wearing out in year 3 and year 5 ($800) Out of Warranty
- 1x CV Joint ($600) Out of Warranty
- 1x Rear Wheel Bearing ($500) Out of Warranty
- 2x Rear boot piston not lifting (Repaired during warranty period)
- 1x Automatic Ignition relay (Repaired during warranty period)
- 2x4 Tyres only lasting 20,000km ($600x2)

Not good value for money
I have now owned my XV 2.0-S for just on one year, so I am doing this review
These are my findings.
The CAR is Totally overrated and overpriced
Under powered also mechanically as well as road noisy
Rides & handles similar to a 1955 Bedford truck
Weird electrics, useless voice recognition and what a ridiculous stop/start mechanism
Good GPS but you have to pay for updates not what we were told
The interior is leather and plastic and not a good presentation
Petrol consumption to your own imagination not what you are expecting
Less boot space than a Honda Jazz/Suzuki Swift, will not fit two small suit cases

- A great little SUV.
- Drive one to understand the engineering behind these vehicle.
Definitely recommend one over other common brands.

Bluetooth phone connection terrible
2017 just purchased brand new . Pros - drives nice and comfortable . Cons - small boot and my biggest issue is the Bluetooth connection is terrible and people can not hear me on the other end. Subaru service has looked st this and said nothing is wrong . I use for work and need good phone connection so I am really disappointed .

Subaru XV S series Manual - Great - just needs a few little touches to be perfect
Purchased a new top of the range S series XV mainly because it is a cheaper than other similar cars from other makers and sits a little higher. In hyper blue it looks awesome, but it also handles well, has nice manual transmission, is very comfortable with good passenger room and a medium sized boot area. Hill-start assist is great too and it has performed perfectly so far (3 months). Missing only a couple of things: sunglass holders, keyless entry on rear passenger doors, front engine hood needs stand (doesn't hold up by itself). Would I buy another one - yes, an auto once the learner drivers leave home!

Very impressed
Purchased our XV with the expectation that it would get us off the beaten track. Overall very impressed with how well it does this. Ground clearance is excellent, drive up a very steep incline on loose rock was quite a surprise, handled it with no problems at all. This was a really good purchase and does the job that we wanted it to do, if not more.

My Wife deserved the Upgrade
My wife loved her MY14 L series XV manual. But after a visit to the Zupps dealer to look at the new MY16 version I decided that she deserved the top of the range S series. Leather, Electric seat, Seat heating, A much better reversing camera and similar infotainment to my 2015 Outback. Interior is smarter in leather with highlighted stitching and the room in the rear is excellent, The sunroof and darker tint glass, Xenon self levelling, dusk sensing headlights also a bonus. Now with 25,000km's on the clock it hasn't missed a beat, no rattles or ...Read more
squeaks, considering the rough roads we drive on everyday. Fuel economy is good for the mixed type of driving she does But out on the highway it sits on 5.8 L/100km which is better than the MY14. Definitely not a speed demon away from lights, however the all wheel drive, extra height driving position and all the other safety gear, gives both of us the peace of mind that no matter what type of road conditions she meets, she will be safe and that's important to me.Similar opinion? Generally very good, has issues and annoyances however
We bought this new. The wife wanted a Subaru and that was that. Previous car was a Lancer and was too low for easy exiting from the seat. Personally I dont rate it much better height wise, but its her car. Boot is small. To fit much stuff in it you need to put the seat down in the back.Taking 3 or 4 people to the airport is just not on if they have a mid size case each.
Drives OK, nothing spectacular but is fairly comfortable, except the seats are hard. Fited sheepskin covers over the leather and its much better.
To be comfortable I have to ...Read more

It's the first and last Subaru I'll buy
Although the performance (i.e. the drive itself) is good there are so many other issues with the car it is horrible.
I have been having back issues due to the uncomfortable seat (which I've since found out is not that uncommon for the XV). I have had to buy a $100 support to resolve this.
The boot wouldn't close in the first couple of weeks after buying the car and they had to replace the seal around the door as it was buckling in places and preventing the door closing.
The Bluetooth kit for the phone is very poor quality to the point wh...Read more

Never will I buy another Subaru
Driving experience was outstanding it stuck to the road like glue especially corning in the wet.
Fuel economy was atrocious in the high revving constant velocity auto box.
Way too much useless tech rubbish on the in dash graphic display. (waste of money).
A real annoying 3 second lag changing from reverse to drive (loads of fun as trucks bear down on you and you go no where) put your foot flat to the floor in this delay period and nothing happens, the engine doesn't even rev! But be warned if you pop out of that lag time with your foot plant...Read more

Oil consumption issues A totally terrrible vehicle
Really my rating for this car is a big Negative 4-5 stars. The most important thing about any car is the engine. The most important thing about an engine is the oil. Both these thing on my daughters XV are less than impressive.
My Daughters XV has had oil consumption problems from the very first service. It is a 2013 model and it is now heading towards its 3rd, yes that right, 3rd engine. The problems continue with the car which was her first new car and her first Subaru. First up it chewed out the cams and carriers due to oil starvation. T...Read more
hen we have had the continued issues of oil consumption. A re-ring kit was put through the car but the the problems continued so a complete short motor was put in the car. Now the low oil level light come on after a minimum of 170km and generally within 500 kn of refill. The latest is after 650 km. We have contacted Subaru Australia to be informed that it has been escalated but have not heard from anyone at all after that initial contact. The low oil level switch was replaced but nothing changed. Then it was found that the engine harness had corrosion on the plug that may be causing a faulty reading. It didnt fix the problem, They have even changed the dipstick as there were several different lengths fitted to the cars over the years and hers may have had the incorrect one fitted during one of the rebuilds. We are heartily sick of the car. Daughter drives about 160-170 km round trip to work and often late at night. We no longer trust the car or that Subaru Australia knows what is wrong or how to fix the vehicle. One incident happened in Ballarat and there was no Subaru dealer in Ballarat to take the car to for them to have a look at what was happening. We want out. Pay out my daughters loan, take back the car and find out what is wrong is all we want. We dont even want any monetary compensation. Would I recommend a Subaru XV No way. NEVER so long as my bottom points to the ground.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Feels like I just jumped in my old car but better
You know that feeling when you get into a different car..takes a while to get used to? My 2013 XVSport isn't like that.. so comfortable, smooth, high enough for great vision, doesn't jut out of carspots like bigger 4WDs. Great all rounder that is as reliable as it is safe.

Terrible
The XV had me stranded on pennant hills road (3 lane road) in peak hour. The car just turned off and would not turn back on again then the cvt locked when I put it in park to try turn it back on again and it would not leave park. Had no car for 2 days. The cars entertainment system didn't work for 3 months while I waited for a replacement now the new one is not working correctly again. The car uses excessive oil & petrol @ 9.8L/100km when ALL driving is HWY. The cars panels are not aligned & the build quality is shocking for a new car. Servicin...Read more
g on subarus is very expensive. The lights have got condensation in them due to cheap materials used in production The car needs a recall but they don't have free spots for a month The car has only done 100,000ks and all these problems already Very glad I also still have my old Audi A4 which has never let me down which is pushing 450,000ks Also the XV is extremely underpowered Would choose a Nissan QuashQai or Range Rover Evoque if you can affordSimilar opinion? Very poor quality
I had seat repaired 6 times in less than 3 years, front doors fill with water when it rains, engine out for two days for oil leaks, GPS changed, squeaks and rattles Wrote to Subaru and even went to fair trade, Subaru Customer care is very poor, they never replied to my letter even after Sales manager confirmed and shown me email of the fact he passed my letter on. The build quality is poor very poor and I would recommend if you was to purchase a Subaru to stay away from the XV.. Bull buckle (The dealer was also unhappy with Subaru)

Great SUV Subaru XV 2.01S CVT
My husband and I bought this car new in March 2013 and love it. It is very easy to drive. It hugs the road and corners very well. It has very good all round vision and also comes with a very accurate reversing camera. It has blue-tooth connectivity which allows me to just push a button on the steering wheel if my phone rings and speak hands free. I can ask it to call people which I find very convenient.
It comes with 7 air bags and sat nav which is not live, but it gets you to the right destination. The seats are leather and are very comfor...Read more
table with good back support. They can also be warmed. The fuel consumption is approx 700km with mostly city but some country driving. We have so far had no problems with this car and are not expecting any. First service was $340 at our local Subaru dealership. The only downside is the size of the boot which I don't care about but which was initially an issue for my husband. Our other car a Mazda 6 has a huge boot so he was comparing cars. We just fold down the back seats if lengthy items need to be carted. We bought the Venetian Red and paid extra for paint protection. We both think this car looks great Great car, drives well and looks good.Purchased in March 2021.

Exactly what I expected when I Bought it!
Test drove pretty much every small to medium SUV on the market before buying a new XV 2.0i-S in Sep 2012. The reason for purchase was equipment level (has every option) available as standard, great deal ( $38k drive away with tow bar and mats) and most importantly I loved how it felt on the road. After two years I haven't been disappointed and a few things have really surprised me! Firstly, after been really disappointed with fuel economy in the past with my 1994 Subaru Liberty Wagon (12L/100km at best), my XV is surprisingly frugal! Not unusua...Read more
l to get 6.2L/100km on a trip and around 8.0L/100km around town. Also surprisingly capable off road within reason, ground clearance is really good, traction is great and will run rings around most big 4 wheel drives in soft sand. Obviously leave heavily rutted tracks and water crossings to deeply treaded, snorkel equipped ladder framed 4 wheel drives. I've read lots of reviews that note significant problems with oil consumption, however I have had no issues and to be quite frank I've had absolutely no problems at all in 2 1/2 years. I've noted a few complaints about performance and boot space, quite surprising noting that I would expect that everyone would have looked at an XV closely and taken one for a good test drive before buying one. My view... yep... it's no power machine, however on our highly regulated roads it's more than adequate 99.5% of the time. Yes the rear hatch isn't big (knew that when I bought it), but as empty nesters, with the rear seats folded down, if needed there is plenty of room and have no problems throwing a couple of mountain bikes. At the end of the day I bought exactly what I paid for, what I expected, plus a bonus with outstanding fuel economy and great reliability :-)Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Brilliant Car
Purchased the 2.0i-S model for my wife - replacing a Volvo V60 Wagon. This was our 4th Subaru and we have never had a moment's problem with any of them. Since we bought our XV we have also purchased a 2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R so we are an all-Subaru family now.
We started out looking at the Mazda 3 (having owned a previous model - but I could not get comfortable in the car), Mazda CX-3, VW Golf (my wife values reliability above all else and the Golf has a lingering poor reliability record), and the Subaru Impreza. As soon as she saw the XV she...Read more
was sold. All the virtues of the Impreza but with a funkier look and easier to enter/exit due to its higher stance. We ordered the car and then I started reading about some owners having trouble with oil consumption - both here and in the US. Started worrying! Now, after 12 months of absolutely trouble-free ownership, we have no regrets. THE CAR HAS USED NO OIL. Why are some people having oil consumption problems and the majority have not? Have these troublesome vehicles been run in according to the manufacturer's instructions? Our XV is great to drive, performs well for its class, is comfortable even for someone my size (191cm) and has been utterly reliable.Purchased in February 2021 at Narellan Subaru for $39,000.00.
