Leaks water and lid does not open
Upon reading the other reviews, l too am disappointed with the kettle. I spent alot of money on this kettle and made the decision to purchase it for its brand name and functionality. It now leaks water from the "window level" and the lid has to be manually opened. Spoke to someone is customer service and because the warranty period has expired, are not interested in the complaint.
Will definitely not be buying any sunbeam product again

Lid no longer opens
Considering how much this kettle is, I would expect the lid to keep working at the very least, however we are now unable to open the lid to fill the kettle. We have had this kettle for approximately two years. I see from older posts this is a common complaint with this model. I would reconsider buying another Sunbeam kettle and look at other brands that are much more reliable, given the price you are paying for this product. What a shame Sunbeam didn't bother to address this issue with the lid seeing it was quite a common complaint. I would not recommend this product.

Nice design but not built to last - broken lid
This kettle has an elegant design overall and excellent functionality to set water temps to brew tea just right is great. We purchased this kettle about 3 years ago and have used it daily. There has been the very occasional instance where the water would just not boil and instead shut off early but the kettle generally worked reliably over the years to boil water daily.
The lid has always been unreliable in its opening and closing - the opening button just did not open the lid every time which meant that sometimes you had to pick the lid ope...Read more

Finally giving trouble after three years
I got the kettle from Myers to whom I had returned under warranty another make. Insisting I did not want a replacement, the staff actually suggested the Sunbeam to me with the promise of very little trouble AND gave me a generous discount, perhaps to rid themselves of a grumbling customer. This kettle has been a delight to use, looks good in the kitchen, gets compliments from use by visitors and, above all, is fast. Only this week has it glitched, the automatic shut off being inoperative. Let's face it, repair probably not worth it but, in spite of some of the comments here (Melting plastic? Really?) I will most like get another.

Hi RonnyCraven, thank you for your review and giving an honest recount...
A miracle. Something else in the house blew a fuse and the kettle repaired itself. Wish I could bottle that whatever it is.

Rubbish, dangerous - Sunbeam MUST be investigated for such substandard.
This kettle was replaced twice. First time the lid stopped opening and the inside plastic started disintegrating with pieces being located inside the kettle. The second time we had the same issue, plus the handle began to heat up to burning point. Also the handle became slightly detached. I simply did not want to deal with Sunbeam staff again either as the made me feel like i had misused the kettle.
Purchased in February 2021 for $149.00.

Works perfectly except for holding water
Worked very well for two years. Love the variable temperature setting as I need a set temperature for my Aeropress coffee gadget. It looks great and I like the wide open mouth that makes it easy to clean.
2 years of use and it's started leaking from the transparent window. On close inspection, the window has developed very fine cracks which has weakened the integrity of the kettle. I came home and the contents of the kettle had drained into the base unit and inside the cupboards. Awful product, made even worse by the premium price it cost. Also bought a matching toaster which is average at best. I will avoid all Sunbeam products in the future.

A Waste of Money
If you pay the extra for a Sunbeam Cafe series kettle you are probably wasting your money as if like mine it lasts only 4 years. Mine leaked around the water gauge overnight and made quite a mess. There was so much water on the bench and base plate that it may have been an electrical hazard but I'm no expert.
I have noticed similar reviews on this site and now wished I had been aware of this site before I wasted my money on a supposed quality sunbeam product. I realise that it is out of warranty but rang Sunbeam to voice my displeasure at h...Read more
aving wasted my money on what appears to be a disposable kettle. If you buy a cheaper model and replace it every two years you will be way in front but what a waste of resources. Build a better mouse trap and the world will beat a path to your door doesn't seem to have inspired Sunbeam.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Leaking kettle after 4 years
I was so surprised when my kettle suddenly started to leak........I'd left it to boil and returned to find the bench top drenched in water. The seal around the window showing the level of water in the kettle no longer doing its job. A kettle costing $119 should last more than 4 years! I love the design of the cafe series but I have totally lost confidence in the Sunbeam brand. If they are not able to manufacture a product to do its job then its not a company I wish to give my hard earned dollars to.

Lid failure
The kettle was great until the lid release started to stick within the first 12 months. It progressed to not working at all and needed to be levered open. Now after three years the lid mechanism has completely crumbled and the lid has fallen out of the kettle. Most concerning was the hard and sharp bits of plastic that would fall into the kettle which my husband almost swallowed. Considering the price I expected better from Sunbeam. I notice three things:
1. Many complaints about the same problem
2. Made in China
3. Now discontinued
Sunbeam should have a product recall and replace these faulty kettles.

Failed after 2 years - Dissapointing
As per others, we were happy enough with this kettle and is quietness. After near 3 years the lid hinge mechanism crumble and failed. Still works but lid is a pain.
As usual in the modern world, manufacturers claims of quality are pure rubbish. These companies deliberately build in redundancy. It is a disgrace!

Received the new updated model and it appears to have the same lid hinge mechanism. I suggest if you own this not to let the lid slam against the stop when it springs open and it might last a bit longer than 3 years...
Update, the lid mechanism on the replacement unit has now also failed.

Can be fixed! It was expensive and a good kettle but mine leaked after 3 years of use
They all seem to leak around the casing and glass level indicator. After some research I went to bunnings and bought some food safe clear sealant (the stuff that needs turps to clean up) it can cope up to over 200 degrees celcius. I put a very small bead around the metal glass join and then used a blade to clean off the excess. 24 hours later. You cannot see ANY repair and it worked completely. Very happy again.

Not worth buying.
Original purchase Dec'14 - Harvey Norman replaced July'15 after digital display mostly not working - now replacement kettle digital display rarely working & kettle has also started making long 'beeping' sound - rang Sunbeam & was told by the very helpful Katherine that Warranty period is 12 mths & basically end of story. Previous & less expensive kettles have lasted much longer than either of these.

Very poor design/ materials in the lid/top handle fixing.
I bought my kettle in July 2014 and had good service for 2 years. A few months ago, the lid release started to become unreliable. A few weeks ago, ( early Dec 2016) the handle mounting appeared to be loosening. It was not apparently easy to tighten up so we lived with that up to Xmas. Yesterday, the problem fully appeared: the black plastic components associared with the lid hinge and top handle fixing crumbled into the inside of the kettle. It seems clear to me that the fixtures are very poorly designed (weak screw fixture) and the unit was ma...Read more

Good until it leaks
Our was purchased in 2012 - we haven't had electrical problems and it was quiet for a while. Maybe it needed de-scaling as mentioned by Sunbeam.
After 4 years it started leaking just like others. Others had this occur sooner, so it looks like it might be a design issue.

I now know why it's discontinued ELECTRIC SHOCK
This kettle was purchases just over two years ago from Harvey Norman. The lid hasn't opened properly for 6 months and this morning it gave me an ELECTRIC SHOCK when I pressed the start/cancel button. When spending over $100 for a kettle this kettle has been a serious lemon. So if you want that extra kick start in the morning and the extra challenge of trying to open the lid with your favorite tea spoon, this is the kettle for you. When you purchase Sunbeam your expectation is a good product. Now I will look elsewhere for the safety of my family.

Lid stopped opening then broke off
As above, the lid jammed then broke off completely. The concept was good with the temperature display as I brew some 90C teas.
The kettle lasted about 2.5 years but when pay a higher price you expect good quality and a longer life for such a product.
Disappointed with Sunbeam.

Most disappointing sunbeam product I've ever owned
I have had this kettle for just over 2 1/2 years, and it has had many problems with the lid not opening until recently it just stopped opening all together. Just yesterday the lid broke. Prior to this the kettle would stop working at around 48 and 65 degrees and sometimes not want to stop at 100 degrees. I found it hard to find another kettle that looked as good and was as solidly built as this kettle. But I am really disappointed with this product and with Sunbeam for making such a lemon.

Leaking and faulty lid
The first 7 months was fine, very happy with the kettle, then it started to leak through the window. Had it replaced and it did the same thing again. Replaced once more and now there is a problem with the lid. Surely this product deserves to be recalled. For the price you do expect quality and for it to be long lasting. Maybe this I something the accc.gov.au should be involved in as Sunbeam seems to palm it off with no responsibility whatsoever.

Pathetic and dangerous
Do not buy this kettle. After two years the window began leaking. This is incredibly dangerous as the water seeps into the base and can not get out. The customer service representative told me that electrocution can not occur as the safety switch would be tripped. I am glad Sunbeam relies on electrical safety switches to prevent their products from causing electrocution rather than making their kettle water tight.

Hi Sunbeam Customer Service, my kettle base unit START/CANCEL button works, but at different stages of the heating process, it stops working - sometimes the temperature reading spirals to zero and flies back up again. It seems very confused. The actual kettle heating element etc is fine. The computer is not.

Hi Sunbeam,
Can you please advise how to fix the sticking lid issue that many of us are encountering after the unit is out of warranty? I'm sure that there is a simple fix as the levers all appear to still be working OK?
1 answer
I will answer this myself. I called Sunbeam and they didn't have an easy fix for the lid sticking issue. Out lid finally became so stuck that a knife was required to lift it. After telling Sunbeam that it was just out of Warranty they said no problem so long as I have the receipt they will replace! I ended up taking to Harvey Norman, Bunbury who were great and replaced despite it being 4 months out of warranty. 5 Star rating for Sunbeam and Harvey Norman Bunbury for service despite the faulty product. It makes me think that it is worth buying from Bricks and Mortar stores rather than online even if there is a price difference for the service.

Hi,
I just LOVED my Sunbeam Kettle (KE9600). I've had it for 18months & it's worked perfectly!!! No leaks (like alot of other people have experienced). But....the lid became jammed so we could only refill through the spourt. I know it's not under warranty but is there anyway to fix it? New spring or something?
Cheers,
Vikki

I too would love to know how to stop the lid sticking. We've had our kettle for a little over 12 months and it has been great, but the lid sticking is a show stopper. The levers still appear to work OK I'm wondering if it is lime scale build-up? Has anyone had any success? Has anyone bothered to contact Sunbeam? Sunbeam if you are reading can you please advise if there is a fix, this appears a common problem?
