Hello Pier,
Yes it is a Lead-free glaze on ceramic pot and during standard testing the levels of lead & cadmium are negligible and meet American FDA standards.

This is all specified on the product page here: https://www.sunbeam.com.au/Cooking/Slow-Cookers/HP4520-SecretChef-Slow-Cooker-4.5L.aspx

Most Important: Is the Ceramic Coating Lead and Cadmium FREE in the Sunbeam Slow Cookers?

Slow Cooking can be Healthier for us (the Celsius being lower than a Gas Stove) but it becomes TOXIC when Lead and/or Cadmium are used in the glaze that coats the Ceramic Bowl OR Nasty Tephlon is used. Stainless Steel would be great - it's Good to have Options.

In the interest of Good Information Practices and Good Health, companies should always state on the package and advertisements if Ceramic Bowls, Oven Dishes, Cups and Plates are Lead and Cadmium FREE. This is a must in manufacture and buying practice for consumers. I have Oven Casserole Ceramic Dishes from a company overseas that openly state this Vital Info on the products. I do not know. At the same time I am old enough for it to be irrelevant.

Hi Janetau. All of Sunbeam's slow cooker inserts meet the necessary requirements.

@Customer C. That is fine for you to just say that, though it needs to be backed up with verifiable test reports supplied to the customer. I asked for the documented test reports and was told they aren't available.

Hi, have just purchased a replacement sunbeam slow cooker 5.5 ltr.
When using it gets that hot on the outside that you can't possibly touch it ...
Is this normal?
Thanks Joanne

Unfortunately I can't really comment as I never touch the outside when it is on. On the rare occasions that I have to move it, I always use the handles. We don't have small children, which I assume is behind your question.

Sunbeam
Customer C.Sunbeam

Hi Joanne. One of the features of the HP5520 is that it has a wrap around element as opposed to an element at the base, which ensures consistent/even cooking. This means that the outer body of the slow cooker will get hot so we always recommend to use the handles if lifting or moving the slow cooker.

My slow cooker is smoking at the bottom and has rubber smell. It is brand new and never used before, is this normal?

Ours did smell a little bit on the first use. After that it has been OK. I assume it is the element affecting sheathing on the wiring. If it continues over the next two or three uses I would take it back.

Sunbeam
Customer C.Sunbeam

Hi Crystal. As Brushy26 said, there may be initial burn off of manufacturing oils when you first turn on the machine. This should stop after a few minutes and is fine to use. If this issue continues beyond the first use, there may be a different problem and I would advise to bring back to the store.

Can’t bring back to store as it’s past the 12 month warranty stage. Just haven’t used it till now. I’ve sent yous an email about my experience and have received no reply.

Hi, I am considering either the HP5520 (or 4520) against the HP5590. It appears the only difference is the automatic switch to keep warm when meal is cooked. Is this a necessary requirement if you will not be home? I have noticed most customer reviewers have the 5520. Also which size is best for a family of four, with occasional leftovers.

We have the HP5520, ours is 5 years old, the 5520 will easily feed a family of 4 ( easily ), this is our second slow cooker of the exact same model, seem's to get a bad rap from people, read the bad rap, but make a informed decision from all points of view, we have friends who have the exact same model with no problems, IF you have a problem then get it fixed !, the cooker is left on in the mornings, come home to a hot meal, we have no problem with the cooker, happliy boils away in either fast or slow mode, the simmer mode works as it should. Sunbeam warranty ALL their products, something goes wrong use it !, hope this helps you decide.

Hi I got sunbeam 5.5 ltrs slow cooker as a gift. I wanted actually to buy a rice cooker to make every 3 times a day . Can u tell me whether this works as same as rice cooker?

Lynda

Gaya a slow cooker will cook your rice, but it won't cook as quick as in a rice cooker - so it depends on what you prefer. Do you want to put on before going to work and then it is ready when you get home or do you want to cook the rice as you need it? I use my microwave to cook my rice as it is quicker than a slow cooker.

Hi there,

You may be able to get a manual for your slow cooker on our website www.sunbeam.co.nz

You may be able to get a insulated carry bag from a store just need to ask them, as Sunbeam does not have insulated bags for slow cookers.

Is it normal for the exterior to get burning hot that you can't touch it or else it will burn your hand? I got worried to leave it on and go away to do other things (like what you suppose to do) because my had a funny plastic smell when I turned it on and exterior gets burning hot in first 5 mins... Quite worring to use when there are kids around...

Hello Yi, from my experience, the burning plastic smell is likely to be normal if you have only used it a few times. It should definitely subside after that. I do believe that the outside shell of the slow cooker will get hot as it warms up, but I don't recall it being at a burning level nor getting so hot so quickly. Then again, I must admit that I have never purposely touched it to find out. The ceramic insert will most definitely be burning hot after it warms up but I always use oven mitts when removing it. I also worry about appliances around children but thankfully mine is still young & cannot reach up to the bench top. It is advisable to have it operating out of reach somewhere or if your children are older, warn them not to touch. Not sure if I have been of much help with your enquiry. If you are still unsure, may be best to approach your retailer or sunbeam directly for a more informed answer, just to ensure that you don't have a faulty appliance. Kindest regards:)

Hi Y1 - I can appreciate your concern with children around. You will need to put the slow cooker out of reach as the outside certainly gets hot to touch. The new slow cookers have hotter elements than the older ones. For example my old Breville slow cooker is 170 - 185 w whereas the Sunbean is 220- 240w.This means you need to ajust your cooking times. To find the above information turn the base (metal part) upside down and the information is there. As far as the smell goes that could be because it is new however I have also a Russell Hobbs slow cooker which when on high it has a similar smell. This cooker is now 5-6 years old.
The major fault of the Sunbeam slow cooker ( apart from being too hot) is the lid does not fit properly and lets all the steam escape and dries out the food being cooked as well as cooking the food poorly.. To overcome this I now put tin foil under the lid to just go beyond the lip of the cooker and this has solved these problems.
Hope this helps you.

Hi Yi,

Our slow cookers do transfer a small amount of heat to the plastic exterior of the slow cooker and the product should always be moved and carried using the cool touch handles at the sides. However this heat should not be an excessive amount and all our slow cookers are certified as unattended appliances.
