Stay away from this one.
Not a good rice cooker. Leaves a crust on the bottom and you must be very careful not to mix this burnt rice into the rest when scooping out. Got it on points last week, used it 3 times and if Qantas Frequent Flyer won't take it back it's going in the bin.

Teflon coating peeling
We got this rice cooker through credit card points less that 1 year ago and the coating has been coming off which is just unacceptable. Birds reportedly die if near Teflon coating whilst cooking so when it gets in my food it's just negligence on Sunbeam's part. I vote this 0 out of 5 stars - NEVER AGAIN Sunbeam!

Adequate rice cooker with some major faults
I have had the Sunbeam rice cooker now for several years, and it works quite well to make rice, which I do a couple of time each week, normally. But the bowl lost its teflon coating early on. Small flecks of grey plastic appeared in the cooked rice. So after a while I scrubbed it all off, and now the bowl is plain metal on its base. The cooker design works well, but I only make "3" or "4" cups of rice at a time - there are problems with it if you try to use it with more rice than that, and it burns if you over or under fill it, other than with ...Read more
the magic 3 or 4 cup level. It is hard to clean too, though not impossible - there is a removable inner sealing plate that needs washing, and the rest of the device needs a thorough wipe out with a sponge after each use. Gunk does tend to collect in its nooks and crannies, and the plastic cup drain at the back needs to be emptied, and is a pest to keep finding. Provided you use it in its optimum configuration, and are not too fussy about cleaning it, then it does a fairly reasonable job of cooking rice.

Disappointed!
We have had our Sunbeam 'Perfect' (a misnomer!) deluxe cooker with steamer for almost a year. At first we were so happy as it didn't spurt water everywhere as our previous steamer did, but sadly it has deteriorated to the stage where everything in the near vicinity is sprayed with sticky rice water. It also slides everywhere...very dangerous.... so we have to put a mat under it. We are so disappointed with the purchase. Teflon is still intact which is a plus I guess. Sunbeam used to be such a reliable brand! My hubby is at the "Bin it" stage!

Ongoing problems with Sunbeam Rice Cooker with Teflon coating
The Teflon coating is coming off the RC5600 after 17 months. The second time this has happened with a Sunbeam product. Very poor customer service when I called. The operator said he would email me within 30 seconds, and there has been no response yet. It is also difficult to submit an email on their web site.

Maybe Third time lucky. NOT.
Got a sunbeam RC5600 rice cooker. Used it 3 or 4 times before it flicked the circuit breaker off on the house. This was when opening the lid to stir the rice. I thought I did something wrong so I tried again another time. Did the same thing. Had the unit replaced from the place of purchase. Used that unit 3 or 4 times before it flicked the circuit breaker off on the house again.
Good news though. Did not have the Teflon issues other people have been having

Not happy Jan
Just like everyone else. For me, from the get go I was not happy with how it cooked the rice and then with in several months the Teflon came off. As it keeps coming off in the rice I can no longer use it. Very unhappy as we went with this one as our last sunbeam lasted years.

And I thought I was the only one...
As per every other review here, this crappy rice cooker had the teflon start peeling off within a couple months. As per every other review, I only use the plastic spoon, wash by hand, etc.
Generally speaking this is a very poorly designed appliance - the metal plate on the underside of the lid is hard to clean (and doesn't come off to clean), the recess around the top collects water (deliberately) and has the tendency to go gross since it is hard to keep clean, which then trickles into a little plastic jug that holds the condensation. Fairly...Read more
disgusting but at least it can be dishwashed. Currently we are just cooking the rice in a saucepan which is far better, but I would suggest to anyone just buying the $15 rice cookers from Kmart - it actually lasted longer!!! And only had 2 parts to clean - bowl + removable lid (which can go in the dishwasher).1 comment
Good Guys were excellent and gave me a full refund with no hassle. Highly recommended

Teflon coating blistering and coming off
I too got the 7 cup rice cooker, cooks rice to a perfection and is a perfect size for me. However the teflon coating is coming off and for health reasons I will not use it! Unfortunately I did not fill in the warranty card. Anyone aware if I can get a replacement insert? I only use the plastic spoon supplied with the ricecooker and use it about once or twice a week.

me too
I bought this rice cooker about 12 months ago, and its been good - cooks the rice, keeps it warm, clean up isn't too bad, although the lid is a bit awkward. But like others have mentioned in reviews the Teflon coating inside the bowl is coming off into the rice. We also have been careful with the bowl - always using non metallic utensils - (we use the supplied scoop most of the time) but the Teflon coating is a complete fail. With no Teflon coating the rice sticks and it becomes a chore to use.

oating would only cost 20 cents for Sunbeam to apply to the bowl - but because it is substandard - the whole $80 cooker is now useless. - so my recommendation is people should buy something else . Its real pity because the Sunbeam brand used stand for quality products.1 comment

Bad product bad customer service
Bought sunbeam 7 cup rice cooker and steamer, And just around 3 months, teflon is starting to peel off. Use it carefully and wash it carefully too. It's not supposed to happen. Send email to sunbeam customer service and no response so far. Who wants to buy a product that only last for a few months? It is also not healthy if the peel off teflon cook together with rice. I wish i read review for this product before i bought it,i think it happen to other customer too...

Cooks good rice each time
I have been using this 5 days a week .We have used this over 8 months and the coating of the Teflon is still intact. We use only plastic serving spoon to get the rice from the pot. I soak the pot in cold water after use for an hour before washing it with light detergent and sponge. The rice has been perfect each time, and we cook from basmati rice to short grain rice for sushi .I empty theplastic catchment by the side every time and remove the lid to clean it. While cumbersome, it ensures that the rice cooker remains clean for the next day. Th...Read more
ere is hardly any splashes while cooking the rice unless I cook coconut rice ie. Using coconut milk which then does create this extra foamy residue but this is the same for other rice cookers which I have used. Thank you.1 comment

Worst appliance I've bought
I previously had a $30 Sunbeam rice cooker which died after a number of years of good value. I decided to spend a bit more money on this Sunbeam. What a waste. Every time I used it, the cooker spurted starchy water over anything nearby so when it was finished cooking, it was sitting in a huge dirty puddle. I had to clean not only the rice bowl, but also the detachable part of the lid, the entire surface of the cooker which was covered in spray, and the bench, windowsill, and any dishes nearby.

Terrible
The teflon started peeling off after only four weeks - grey pieces of teflon in the rice! Even from the beginning it did not cook the rice well. It sticks badly to the bottom of the pan. A waste of money. Our previous Tiger rice cooker lasted 15 years and the teflon never came off.

Perfect Rice Every Time
I bought this because of the fully sealing lid, from what I read the sealing lid cooks the rice better and there is no splatter. I have had the rice cooker for over nine months now and the teflon bowl has shown no signs of wear or peeling. The rice doesn't stick to the bottom like the cheaper cookers, highly recommend. Perfect Rice Every Time!

Worst Appliance I have ever purchased
I used a $10 cheapie for a long time so,when it died, bought this cooker..absolutely hate it...slides around the benchtop so I have to sit it on a towel.I even called Sunbeam to see if I was missing something but no!
I thoroughly wash the rice before cooking but get a lot of spatter which is another reason I need a towel under.I am going to purchase another cheapie and send this one to Lifeline.
Not much
hard to clean,messy!

Washing up lid is awkard and difficult to clean properly
No one else appears to have an issue when washing the inside of the lid after use. I find it is difficult to clean as I am unable to pull it apart.
Am I doing it wrong or the inside of the lid can not be taken out to wash properly? I can see the section between the inside and outside lid and it is dirty!!!!!
Easy to use, turn on and forget till it is ready.
Lid is awkward to wash.

Does a good job.
I have owned a few rice cookers over the years but this one has definitely been the best. It cooks a good amount of rice for those occasions when you have visitors and need loads of rice but can also just cook 1 cup nicely. It does let out a lot of steam so i find it best to sit it on the stove with the range-hood on when i use it. Ive never bothered to try and use the steamer tray that you receive with it when you buy it.
Very efficient for the amount of rice it can cook
When you lift lid on completion of cooking hot steamy water pours out of the lid hinge all over the bench.

Did you read the instructions. You wait 5-10 minutes after cooking is completed before you open the lid.

Bad
I bought this unit in 2005 and was attracted to it because back then, this was one of the few models in the shop with a locking lid. It reminded me of the rice cookers in Japan. If it weren't for the issue with the non-stick coating, we'd still be using it today.
I like the fact that it cooks rice better than when I cook it in a pot. We eat rice a lot and it still keeps ticking along.
The non-stick coating does not last. The first time this happened, we bought a replacement bowl from Sunbeam (which wasn't cheap). Unfortunately, the coating on the replacement bowl also started coming off. We don't use any abrasive materials on it and use a sponge and soapy water to clean it.

Bad
If only the non-stick sticks to the pot and not to the rice, it would be a good rice cooker.
Cooks rice well
Like the others-the non stick coat has worn off and we're eating teflon

RE: Sunbeam RC5600 7 Cup Rice Cooker and Steamer (RC5600)]
Harvey Norman advised me that you can purchase a replacement bowl for this rice cooker directly through Sunbeam as a spare part, quote the model number RC5600 :-
Sunbeam spare parts Ph:1300-881-861. Trouble was the part was horrifically priced. I think around $30 + shipping. I didnt rush out and buy the spare.
Sunbeam do the right thing: reduce the price of your aluminium rice bowl and improve the flaking teflon coating
Yes I want to be environmentally responsible and not just throw out Rice Cooker due to small amount of teflon coming off the rice cookers bowl ...
