Excellent driver
Bought this 2018 Hilux 3 weeks ago and must say very impressed with how it drives and the features included for a basic workmate ute. Very smooth and comfortable daily driver.

poor ride/bad fuel consumption
had to upgrade suspension due to weight carried in the rear, also says its a 80 litre tank, warning light comes on when 12 litres left and sometimes 20 litres, the most I have put in it when refueling is 69 litre, can only get around 560 kms from a tank, vehicle is 250 kg under GVM, so its not over loaded, this is sitting on a speed of 110km WA, and some driving around town, poor fuel economy for a 4 cylinder.

Great work horse, not a problem!
So reliable 1984 model was voted most reliable car ever. Love my luxey. Have a workmate 4+2 man and tows so easily put near 1 tonne in it every day handles so well. had a triton and hated it didn’t tow well or handle weight. Hilux is total opposite. Search top gear Hilux to watch a 3 part short film on trying to ‘kill’ one.

Terrible fuel consumption,
Fuel consumption over 12ltr/100kms, Automatic gearbox (artificial intelligent) has overcomplicated itself. Without a Toyota reset these vehicles don't go into 6th gear within the legal speed limit. They admit this is a large contribution to the high fuel consumption, but don't want to release it to the media.

Reliable, cheap to run, go anywhere
Purchased new sr5 plus this year mainly due to reliability and style. Little slow but it is a Ute... drives great on and off road cheap to run for 4wd. Stereo is a little glitchy, interior is great and the whole thing is built well. I got a good price otherwise its an expensive dual cab compared to others. Mine has the upgraded system for dpf and Ive never had issues here, acceleration isnt awesome but power button definetly sorts this for overtaking and manual gearbox is effortless. I love it but have owned 4wd utes prior...its no passenger car

Top Of The Price Bracket Of Utes Middle Of The Road Features
After being disappointed with the reliability of a Ford Ranger (PJ) and Mazda BT-50 (MKII 2014), I've purchased a 2022 SR5 Hilux. While I'd normally wait a few years to review a car (so I can see how it performs mechanically), I thought I'd do an initial review of the apparent highest selling 4x4 utility.
Generally, I'm pretty happy with it at present, however there are some strange things going on in the world of Toyota and Hilux.
Let's start with the good:
I really like the look of it - The SR5 has the right dimensions, 18" alloy wheels lo...Read more

Good and solid but not perfect (what is?.....)
This is my third brand new. Hilux over 20 years. Funnily every time advances are made in engine performance it is lost with an extra bit of anti pollution gear, this time round the dpf thanks to those late sipping europeans.
The dpf is fine if you are the same as me and live in the country, very short city drives will get you into the well published problems with the dpf. Mine has been no problem, even when I lived in canberra as I drove about 15 kms to work. The only issues with it have been noisey rear brakes, but that is what you get wit...Read more
h drum rear ends.....and that is about it, always reliable. Engine performance is adequate with a high degree of drivability with the power coming on at low revs I have a larger type boat and the hilx will pull it ok but it is a bit pedestrian. Economy about 9.5 and towing heavy about 12, Interior is nice and has lasted 100k well. All in all a hilux and worth it, by the way a very good truck, and a very good 4 x 4. Ride is typical dual cab ute, I have a canopy so it rides very nice, just need a bit of weight in them, you cant have a car like ride in the rear of these and carry a heavy load, no ute can do that. The steel in hilux springs is high quality japanese steel, so when one of these after market spring sellers say otherwise it is just rubbish, (particularly when they use cheap chinese steel) I got mine reset to match the canopy etc and they are excellent. Worth buying as you know what you get, ALL car dealerships suffer problems so you just have to be patient with the whole lt of them!Purchased in October 2021 at Canberra toyota.

Not much bang for your buck
Gonna keep this short and sweet. Terrible fuel economy. The cruise control system is garbage and interior/speakers/ just the little things are lacking. Had a Mazda BT-50 XTR before this I’ll never buy another Hilux can’t wait to get rid of it.

Good vehicle but not great
Brought the Hilux Rugged X as a boat towing vehicle and everyday work vehicle. Features for a $65K vehicle is quite low. Does not have a lot of the standard features you expect from a car this expensive.

This is the worst vehicle I ever bought
Hi I bought this Ute for $45888 from a dealership 09/2016 model was purchased in January 2022 still under warranty for peace of mind but after 3 months the Ute starts blowing a lot of smoke making noise from right front shock also find a rust spot near front windscreen on the roof I contact Toyota and was sent to closest Toyota service department left the Ute for 5 days till Toyota received parts change DPF and the shock about rust I was sent to panel beater to look at it I took the Ute an I was told he will send the quote to Toyota. All in All a Great ute
Our 3rd Hilux after 2 x 2007 models.
Have had no issues whatsoever, we run a regional electrical contracting company so vehicles carry plenty of weight. Fuel consumption isn’t great, but nothing with ladders on roof and bullbars/spotlights is.
Feels stronger in the chassis and driveline than previous model. Have done 80,000km in the past year now and it hasn’t skipped a beat.
Only downside is seats aren’t as comfy or shaped/positioned as well as previous model.

Not regretting for buying a Hilux
Bought 2018 Workmate double cab 2.7 l petrol as a new car.
Done close to 500 km now.
Good side:
1. Surprisingly quiet cabin when driving at 60 kph as a Ute.
2. Simple to operate, basic functions just fine to me.
3. If not looking back, I would feel like driving a SUV.

Basic but dependable
We've purchased about 4 Hiluxes recently, as well as Volkswagen Amaroks, Ford Rangers, Holden Colorado, Nissan Navara.
The Toyota Hilux is a safe choice. It has the same vices as any other crew cab ute (basic, bumpy, wheezy) but is generally inoffensive to own.
Volkswagen Amarok is probably the best, Ford Ranger also very good but a bit truck-like. Navaras are cheap, crappy and gutless - whether they have a Nissan or Benz badge, same car haha.
Toyota Hilux is a bit gutless but does the job. (diesel automatic 4x4 crew cab completely empty). Fuel...Read more

Great vehicle
Done 55k,serviced on time by myself, never had any problems. I drive my hilux every day, usually 10 kms to work and back,no dpf issues ever. In saying that i do use the correct dpf oil at services and have minimal idle times. Have never had any driveline clunking i have read about either.I see people believe theres a fuel gauge problem, because they can only get 60 liters in the tank once the low fuel light is on.Isn't this simply a early warning system meaning fuel level is getting low and it will need filling in the next 100 200 kms?Unlike my previous new ute which had many problems from the first month i owned it until i traded it with auto trans problems at 90k, this hilux was cheaper to buy and much more reliable than the ranger

Poor fuel usage
I purchased a 2017 hilux SR with automatic transmission. Bought this vehicle brand new. It is used as a farm vehicle and on the open highway. Have had all its services done on time at the dealership. I am relatively happy with it. I have done 40k now and have had no mechanical issues with it. From new it has had a higher fuel usage than I expected. Around
13L/100km. Can get around 11.7 on a long run with no load. I have complained to the dealer about it. Their computer says there's nothing wrong with it.
On the highway when doing 110km/h it mostly stays in 5th gear. Only changes to 6th gear going downhill. Seems like the motor is under powered. If I can get the high fuel usage problem solved I would rate it 5 stars.

Lies lies lies
Fourth brand new hilux in a row. While farming I swore by them but since changing to 4x2’s in city life I’m ready to try competitors. The problem boiling my urine currently is the fuel gauge dilemma going on two years now. There has been one dealer fix and just had the toyota factory “fix”. My fuel tank is now meant to have 12 litres of fuel remaining when the fuel light comes on but I still have 20 litres before the needle rapidly goes to empty. Toyota’s lied to me again and I expect far more from this car GIANT!
I bought a motor vehicle with...Read more
