Excellent car
Bought this car in 2012 with 140k on it. Drove it from WOLLONGONG to Bega for 6 years for work. Serviced every 10k replaced brakes pads, rear wheel bearings and finally clutch at 270k.
This has to be the best car I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned a few in 40 years of driving, expect 500k with no problem.
Just bought another RAV4 2004, if it half as good as this one I’ll be very happy.
Purchased in February 2021 for $11,000.00.

Love our rav4
I got a 2001 rav4 'edge'. 300,000 ks. on the clock. Got it cheap as it needed some tlc, changed rear bearings, did some body work and general maintenance as well. I absolutely love this car .Easy to work on and versatile. Removed the rear seats and trans a fridge even. Very economical and I enjoy the higher driving position . I seriously can't fault this car. It takes us on 300k round trips to Brisbane and back frequently, never missing a beat.

Peace of mind
I've owned Rav4's for more than 10 years, my original Rav4 was bought years ago because of a high opinion i developed over time, It's very reliable and easy to drive, I have a back injury from work several years ago, so entering the rav4 is quite easy, i don't have to contort myself to get in or out, Also since it's more of a midrange size in SUV's getting about is simpler, than the larger Land cruisers and Prado's in Toyota's range. It's easier to park and acceleration is pretty good as well.

Great Cruiser
I've been driving my 2004 RAV for almost a year now. I have never had a technical problem with the car and the comfort and presentation of it are to die for.
It is a practical car for both urban and off-road cruising, but it's AWD nature makes it impractical for some off-road use.

Love it
Had this car since brand new 2005, cheap on fuel. Love the whole entire car and can’t pick any faults. The car was fitted with all optional extras, but those extra costs made the car what it is and was / is well worth the money spent on it getting modified to personal tastes. Still going strong 260,000 kms later !

I assume if you are looking at this you are stalking me or looking for a cheep small reliable suv
Hello,
Well you have found it, ours (and latter I will tell you why we say ours) is currently in Wangaratta Victoria having made another long journey without even the hint of letting us down. It's fridge white, with silver plastic bits and like those fridges of long time past with the rounded shoulders and chrome handles, it just can't be stopped.
I am a grandfather - congratulations you say, the RAV has been in my family since new, my parents bought it, drove it for five years, put 15,000ks on the clock and then gave it to me. I drove it f...Read more
or another five years, mostly long country driving in my commute to work in Canberra and put another 150,000ks on it. Then I ran over a wombat, had it fixed - the RAV the is, no hope for the wombat unfortunately, and gave it to my daughter. Can't say it is very tenderly cherished, but it just keeps going, like new. Now and again new tries, a wash, bit of new engine oil and some radiator stuff and on it goes. The trim is in really good shape no real signs of age, remarkable. Scratches now outnumber the unscratched bits of the duco but it lives in the bush, so that goes with the territory.Purchased in May 2021.

I am going to drive it until it drops or my grandaughter turns 17, she has first dibs on it if the poo rav just keeps on keeping on. I wonder if the new ones, specifically the Hybrid is as good? Reliable, Roomy, Flexible interior
Pros: Ultimately I chose this car because I can trust its reliability and longevity. I believe I'll get 500000ks out of it. Ive done 250000ks. The major repairs I have done are new steering rack and new clutch (which was only this year.) I have only ever needed minor maintenance till now (oil changes, brake shoes etc) Over that distance I am happy with this. The resale value is very good, probably even more than it deserves but people do love a Rav4. Timing chain never fails - it is great to have a chain rather than a belt, it is designed to ne...Read more
ver need replacing. Sunroof is cool, Petrol is very economical for its size, lots of storage for a bulky work kit, seats can be put down or removed to make more space, its got lots of little cupboards and storage nooks throughout, the shopping bag hooks are surprisingly useful. The forward facing roof racks took some getting used to as you need to add sidways racks to support anything heavy. Car looks great - it doesnt look out of place next to much new cars. The CD player and cassette deck are outdated even for this era of car - no bluetooth which is a shame. Cons: Poor turning circle, Ive driven a 13 seater bus with a better turning circle. Not very powerful, it is the same 2L engine from Camry in a much heavier car -the power to weight ratio is poor. It has no take off power, Ive driven a stock 1.6L Kia Rio which was faster off the lights. The legroom is awkward, you cant get your arms close enough to the steering wheel without crushing your knees. If you put the seat back until your legs are comfortable - the steering wheel is then too far away. Both me (slim 170cm) and my partner (bulky 188cm) had this problem.Similar opinion? The Perfect Car
Love the car, won't let anyone drive it, not even my husband, The performance is outstanding, quiet and I really feel safe. My mechanic said it was well looked after and only have had one small problem which was the car yards fault and was easily fixed. I love the interior no scratches just like new, running costs are at a minimal, great on fuel and very reliable. I love Toyota...

Solid and Reliable Manual - A true Toyota
Bought this car new and it turned 10 this year. What a great model. I live near the ocean and there is no rust, the engine runs like new. I have had problems with the gears which cost me $300.00 to replace a part but that's it! (this does not include regular servicing by my local mechanic, brakes etc).
The interior is simple and comfortable and have traveled from Sydney (max 1000 km each journey) to many places with 2 happy adults relaxing in the rear with reclining seats and plenty of room for luggage behind them.

n SUV at that time, I attempted a rock dirt track. for around 15 km. I am not an off road driver and didn't want the damage to my undercarriage and paintwork. Handled OK, went through 20cm water approx. There were no problems afterwards. It is a solid great car with fair fuel consumption.great reliability and simple comfort without the benefits of of current GPS and communication technology. It does have Bluetooth connect ability. I have been researching to buy a new AWD and unfortunately Toyata's new 2015 RAV does not meet the criteria that I seek for a 'soft roader'. I am sure they represent great Toyota quality and reliability but are aimed at city drivers. Congrats Toyota for my 2005 RAV4!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Unbreakable fun
Currently on my third 3 door. After 20 years ravving on dirt roads my only complaint is the small fuel tank. Other than that, typical Toyota reliability. Fantastic a/c and heater. Electricals are bombproof, as is drive train. Don't recommend hitting roos/sheep/trees but! Too bad they discontinued this awesome economical fun machine.

I Love my Car
My Rav is fabulous. It does everything I need it to do. I have had absolutely no problem with its performance. Reading other reviews I am surprised anyone had a mechanical issue with the 2002 model.
My husband has 2 issues with it, but they are both extras that were just not available on this model(cruise control & guts)
Both things I'm not overly concerned about. I've had it 6 years and I'm extremely happy with it, especially the boot space which was really important to me.
When we were looking to buy a car, any later Rav model had 1/2 ...Read more

Good all round RAV
Some might say RAV4 are bland...like most Toyota's but you can bete their reliablity down to earth functional designed that works......take the rear seats out are you can even sleep in the back or take a load of junck to the tip.
Cheap to run, reliable and appears to be lasting forever....heard that before...yes Toyota go really offer a top line product
Quality, reliable and functional
Nothing much.....all positives

2005 Rav4 CV Sport
I love the Rav4 CV sport, having owned it since it was relatively new, I have had no troubles with it. It has comfortable seats, good fuel economy and the AWD system is great. I bought the manual which has plenty of power, the 2.4litre motor, it can easily overtake in 5th gear. It's very easy to park and you can fit it into tight places. It is a fun, zippy, little car and the scoop and alloys make it look racey.

Loved the car - a touch small for a growing family
Excellent car. We love it. I would recommend the foot rails, as they seem to prevent people knocking your doors.
We have only had it 4 months (from new), but so far there have been no problems, and we really enjoy driving it.
UPDATE: we traded the car in after 50,000K for the newer 2007 RAV4. We never had any problems with the previous one, but we needed the extra room.
Great looks, visibility, AWD, powerful 2.4L engine, and small enough to be manageable in car parks.
Fuel consumption is a little on the high side. It does have a small ...Read more

Disappointed was a Toyota fan not now! Have a 2002 RAV4 Advantage.
First problem I experienced was the alternator belt automatic tensioner failing costing me $500. I would have preferred just to adjust it! It would vibrate and make a noise but would go when revs went up.
Then complete engine failure with big end damage, engine making a terrible rattling noise then locking up while being analysed at Toyota dealer at 166 000 km despite being regularly serviced and well maintained. Apparently this is common with this model suffering from slugging problems. I only discovered this after my son googled RAV 4 engine problems! So shattered because I loved my 1985 land cruiser diesel series 60 model because it was so reliable.

2004 & 5 models
This is my fourth rav since 2003 which indicates my confidence in these models. I used to be a suzuki vitara man for 10 years prior to that and still like them for 4x4 toughness. Rav claimed to be the first suv of this type, but this not correct as the vitara came out in 1988 way ahead of others by years. I have also grown up around subarus from the 80s and 90s which even preceded the vitaras by 10 years so Toyota and pro review writers you are full of absent minded waffle on that issue. My requirements for the ideal soft suv needs to be able t...Read more
o cruise around town for 95% of normal use like a small to medium car, economy, be able to tackle reasonable off roading on the beach in deep soft sand following the track mess that big 4wds make and not get into too much trouble, while occasionally do some punishing 2000km round fishing trips to shark bay, west australia beaches and back to Perth city with 4 guys and gear (500kg+). My previous 1.6L vitaras had achieved this well with exception of lacking engine power on big country road hills with a 1.6L engine. My first rav was the 2.0L first generation, pretty good all round with light weight body around 1280kg so economy was around 10Km/L urban and 10.5+ country auto, load carry was not great at 360kg so sags badly on offroad tracks, but has hi ground clearance, negatives where country road noise was bad drowning out the stereo and the exhaust pipe dragged on ground sometimes under the rear diff but still was excellent keeping up with or better than heavy 4wds. I would dare I say better than all my great little vitaras with their low-range 4x4 gearing because the new generation sophisticated suv viscous coupling AWD system which sends power to wheels that have traction, I was surprised to find that on sand driving better than traditional 4x4 system. This gen rav beat all my previous suvs in having good engine power, big wheels, luggage space, good enough ground clearance and front bumper approach angle on rough tracks, except for load carrying sagging the suspension and dragging the tail exhaust pipe sometimes. My next rav was 4 door auto 2005 sports, which was everything as good as the first gen rav, overall heavier at 1420kg, way more gutsy 2.4L engine better for overtaking on country roads and even better off-road on and as it was able to blast out of deep sand tracks and up hills, much better load carrying at around 470kg so rear suspension did not sag so bad on fishing trips, much better road noise insulation, better radio CD player, and body rigidity. However, economy was about 5-10% less than first gen rav. 1st and 2nd gen ravs are only 4.2m long yet have good luggage space as it is very deep, excellent parking and handling vs the big 4wds. In addition to tackling the punishing fishing trips, this little rav also did a 7000km round trip to Alice springs via the 1500km great central hwy desert gravel roads in Australia, up the 2000km Tanami central desert track to Bungle bungles northwest Australia and back to Perth city, all without missing a beat. The AWD system was amazing on 3500km of desert gravel roads as the car often cruised at 100km+ and stuck to the loose road surface like a rally car - those people buying 2wd suv are really missing out. The rav lost half the door panel paint on both sides as the constant road gravel stone chipping sandblasted it off back to bare metal, so lesson learnt - use mud guards and tape the door panels next time. After beating these elements, unfortunately this courageous little rav was not designed to handle a rare ice hail storm in Perth one day and ended with extensive body and window damage and had to be written off at only 43000km by the insurance company. My next Rav was 2005 manual 2 door cruiser, which I bought second hand in Sydney and drove it back 5000km to Perth. Surprisingly the manual gear ratios are not as low as the auto transmission and the rpm at 110km is much higher at 3600 vs 3200 in auto. You can reduce this by fitting one profile tire size up which is still legal and reduces rpm by 300 and helps ground clearance for off roading driving. The 2 door is very sporty looking and zippy, no big fishing trips but used on beach camping with even better off road ability and 10% better economy. Load carrying was only 320kg and boot space limited. Rear seats were surprisingly good despite the 3.8m car length, great parking and manoeuvring. The load issue can be helped by fitting adjustable poly air bags in the rear coil suspension. I sold this for more money than I paid thinking I would be better off with a 2009 Grand vitara diesel manual. However doubts over the Diesel engine reliability caused loss of confidence though so I sold it, though it was a good car. I went back back into an unbelievable fresh 28000km Rav 2004 auto cruiser to do it all again. Overall i have had very few issues with Ravs over the past 10 years and they still tick most of the boxes for me and servicing costs are very low and not much goes wrong. Many other suvs like mazda cx5, tiguan, subaru outback and others have a low overhanging front bumper that severely restricts off road use so their awd is wasted. I notice Toyota are smart so even the latest Rav has not compromised looks for functionality and still has better bumper design to allow off-roading so the rav remains true to its original form. Reliable, compact, awd system works well off road, reasonable economy and space Load carrying sags suspensionPurchased in April 2021.

We bought an automatic rav 4 in 2005.First the rear springs developed the imfamous rear end sag. They were replaced at our expense, not a warranty thing. Our cruise control failed just outside our extended warranty. That's on order at over $500.00 plus labour at our expense. We are currently getting 6.3klm to the litre using 98ron fuel which relates to 15.87 litres to 100klms urban. This the car my wife fell in love with and just had to have.I'm 71 my wife 46,we are not speed mechants, sedate is our style.Blowfly

I've got an automatic 2003 RAV4 Cruiser and we're still getting over 8 km per litre and I don't spare the horses. Don't know about any sag, front, rear, infamous or otherwise. Suspension is still sharp.

Hi there..im planning to buy a rav4 2004 cv automatic but some people are saying the car is really good and some are saying these cars have a transmission issue..im confused would someone please guide me if i should buy or no ?
1 answer
Hi Nomi, The 2004 Rav 4 didn't have any more issues with the transmission then any other model. Generally, the auto's are really good. A test drive of the car will soon show you if it has any problems. Maybe take someone with you that has a bit of mechanical ability, when you look at it, so that they can put the transmission through it's paces. If it slips, noisy or even hangs on during a gear change, then you've got problems, otherwise grab it and enjoy the ride!

Is it ok to use the rear fixed points for installing roof racks, or should it always be the front and middle sets? I would like to use the front and rear ones for more stability but no one seems to do this.

It's two years latter and it's still going strong, nothing can kill this car. Seems to got to the post scratch stage, drove it around last week and not a squeak even on unsealed roads.
