Powerful and reliable machine
When buying this mower, my requirements were simple. I wanted a 2 stroke with an alloy chassis that also mulched. It turned out that the Victa Mustang was the only mower on the planet that ticked all the boxes, so I bought it.
I have not used a 2 stroke for at least 30 years but my memories were all good so I was a little fearful that I had imagined it all. When I fuelled my new Mustang and primed it, all it took was one gentle pull and it burst into life. What a wonderful, purposeful sound it made!
With the mulching plug in place, I proc...Read more
eeded to mow my 1100m lawn which the mower coped with wonderfully. The mulching function is excellent with no grass residue or clumps at all and I love the fact that the engine does not slow at all when it comes to harder, longer grass. It just powers through it all. The modern 2 strokes make almost no smoke but are still quite noisy when compared to my other mower which is fitted with a 5.5hp Honda motor. My impressions of the Mustang are that the chassis and motor are very well constructed and should last me many years. I am fussy with fuel mixture and fuel storage so envisage very few problems. A couple of points though. I do not intend to use the catcher but for those who will, the catcher appears to be very lightly made and I doubt that it is very robust. It also seems quite small so it would have to be emptied often. I would have expected more from what is otherwise a fairly heavy duty machine. Another little point is that the decals have been placed poorly. This, obviously means little but I do wonder whether this is a reflection on the modern Victa quality control. Are there other little things wrong under the surface? Attention to detail is important. It will be interesting to see how long the wheels last. They are nice and big but seem somewhat cheaply made - I hope I am wrong with this one.

Mower great - engine not so good
Use this commercially so it does a lot of work.
The Chinese (I think) Honda motor had cold start issues almost from new. After the first start in the morning all was fine. Seems like it wasn't up to the job though (2 years of commercial use)
Have now replaced the motor with an American made Briggs and Stratton.
The rest of the mower is still great.
Remember though, I would do a years worth of domestic mowing in a week.
All in all an excellent product

Constant cold start problems
Bought this lawnmower from Bunnings thinking I would pay a little more but get a decent lawnmower with a good chassis and Honda engine. Initially worked OK but has progressively become harder and harder to start when cold. Took it in to be serviced and spoke to the service agent who advised that the Honda engines attached to these mowers are manufactured in a different factory (and country) and to a lower quality than the all Honda lawnmowers. Even after service still having on going cold start issues (15+ attempts to start). Once you get i...Read more
t going and warmed up it will restart all OK. It is harder to start than the 2 stroke mower it replaced! Buy the all Honda mower, I didn't as I didn't like the stop/start safety feature and fabric catcher. Kicking myself now :-( very disappointed. Provides a great workout trying to start it Serious Cold start issues!1 comment

Good solid mower
Bought from bunnings, very happy with the Honda engine, it does slow down in thick grass but still powers through where my old mower would just die. Really quiet, good build quality, turns easily, not heavy to push round and starts easily. Only troubles I am having are getting the idling right (tends to stall) and wish the catcher was a little bigger.

Excellent Mower
I have a Briggs and Stratton 190cc powered Mustang. I cut approximately 19 lawns a week with this mower and it has now cut around 3000 lawns in 3 years.
I sharpen the blades every 7-8 weeks and replace them whenever they have worn to far - usually after about 5-6 months. I change the oil every 8 weeks. Air filter and spark plug get changed at same time unless I have been using it in dusty conditions in which case the filter will be changed earlier.
The only problems I have had with it is having to replace the handle 3 times and it is on its 3rd set of wheels.
I paid $NZ975.00 for this mower 3 years ago and it has been worth the money.
Easy to start, easy to use

An update: have now re-powered this mower with a new B&S 190cc professional engine.
The last engine was starting to use oil after mowing just under 6000 lawns. (This is equal to mowing lawn every week... Read more

The best machine I ever owned
This is the first lawn mower I bought in 1985. I have used this to date 18 December 2013 without any major problems. They don't make them anymore to last like this. Never had any starting problems just clean the plugs or replace the plugs and ready to go for another two hours. Why cant they make vehicles like this.
God Bless the Victor family. The family should have been made Australian of the decade.
The upper handle broke trying to find a second hand one hope I can even second hand

Possibly the best domestic mower available
After much deliberation, I bought the 2 stroke model of the Mustang. Victa 2 strokes have the reputation of lasting decades and this combined with a well engineered chassis makes for a very long lasting mower. Mixing fuel is a snap so this is a non-issue as far as I am concerned.
First impressions were that this mower is rather heavy, but that probably means it is well built and solid. The wheels appear to be very solid and strong so should last the distance.
I have owned the mower for 8 months now and have mowed nearly every week during ...Read more
that time. My block is the traditional quarter acre suburban affair, so there is a fair bit of lawn to do. The 2 stroke motor has started on the first pull every time. No exceptions. I simply followed the Victa starting routine, both hot and cold and the engine simply bursts into life and runs effortlessly. My previous mower was a Masport fitted with a Honda motor which was quite good but was always difficult to cold start and the handles were rather flimsy with quite a bit of movement in them. This always made manoeuvring difficult. I was very pleased to find the Victa was rock solid and stiff in the handles which makes for a pleasant mowing experience. Yes, the 2 stroke makes more noise, yes, it makes more vibration, it does smoke a little when cold and it uses a bit more fuel but it more than makes up for these little quirks by its effortless starting and mowing performance.4 comments
I have the exact same model with the 2 stroke engine! Best in class and unbeatable! Love it!
Your neighbours must be envious

Great Mower
I wanted to buy a Honda mower, however I did not like the Honda's new safety feature that stops the motor every time that you let go of the handle or it's fabric catcher. The Honda powered Victa was a great compromise. It is incredibly easy to start and has all the benefits of a 4 stroke motor.
Honda Motor, Very easy to start.
Wheels not as free as some other mowers that i've used.

Follow-up note. Still very happy with the mower, but it could occasionally do with a bit more power. Sometimes when mowing lawn that is thick and spongy I do have to slow right down or mow very narrow strips.

love the mustang mca485 with the honda motor
Picked one up today to replace my dead victor tornado with the briggs and stratton motor. I gave it a good work. My overgrown block with uneven terrain that had slipped into a bit of a state while I debated which way to go with my next mower.
It performed solidly and feels like a better unit in every way, definitely worth the extra dollars. Would not buy another briggs and stratton unit after putting the honda through it's paces.
Starts easy, cuts well, plenty of power, feels nice to push around
none, it's not cheap but it's worth what it cost

What a beast,
Having had several mowers over the years, my old girl died after 7 years.I had a Rover 5.5hp B&S.I have now Looked at lots of mowers to replace her and decided that this was best value.Victa Mustang MC485 at $699.00 from Bunnings Southern River.
Best decision i ever made, heaps of grunt with plenty to spare. Cuts perfect, quality fittings with quiet and smooth operation. With the added perfection of Honda 160 motor, would recommend this mower to any purchaser. Good solid powerful Aussie mower.

I purchased a Victa Corvet in 1969 and it is still going strong. It has only required 1 new muffler 1 New grass catcher plus the odd set of blades and spark plug.
When my son bought his own home six years ago I bought him a Victa Mustang with an alloy baseplate and Victa 2 Stroke engine as it is a quality mower and requires less service than the 4 strokes, for his birthday.
My words to him at that time were Look after this mower and it will last you a lifetime. So far after even some really hard work the mower is living up to its name and Ped...Read more

The Victa 2 stroke Mustang is a solid well built mower. It starts first pull every time. The mulching function is fantastic, it saves time emptying the catcher and with the large 8 inch ball bearing wheels it is really easy to push. The alloy base insures that rust won't be a problem in years to come ( as was the case with my previous mower). Price wise $649 is quiet reasonable for a quality mower which will give years of trouble free mowing. I am very happy with this mower and being a Victa, service and spare parts are widely available. I would recommend this mower to anyone in the market for a new mower.
Starts first time every time, mulching and easy to push.

d to pull the starter cord, this was fixed free of charge. Not long after it was out of warranty the handles broke where the release camber is which I managed to fix myself, this was a disappointment as now the handles are 4 inches shorter. It is a real job to start when cold (anything up to 10 pulls), I have replaced and gaped the spark plug and replaced the air filter, all which made no difference to its starting performance. It starts first pull when hot.I also had to replace the fuel tap as it started to leak. All in all I think if I were buying another mower I would go with something different, maybe look at Masport. I think Victa have ceased production of the 2 stroke engine but the handles still should not have broken, my lawn is flat and the mower has been well looked after.Similar opinion? This has been an awesome mower!!!!
it has a very fuel efficient 2 stroke engine
I paid $800 for this but it is worth every cent.
i have cut very tall thick grass and the mower would not stall but my friends new briggs and stratton would.
and the strong aluminum chassis is rust resistant!!!!!!
and it has one of those plug in hose wash ports which make cleaning up easy!!
Thanks Victa for an Awesome product!!!!...Read more

Great Mower
I have had a Briggs and Stratton for 5 years and needed to upgrade to a new mower. Got this Victa Mustang MCA 485 from Bunnings. Yes it was a bit of an investment but it was worth every penny. It starts easily and cuts perfectly. I now look forward to push this little baby out and do the lawn!

I have the MCA488 4 stroke 750 VC-Series Briggs & Straton.
19" cut, the alloy frame is a bonus...but I dont mow when the grass is wet. The starter chord is at a high position on the handle bar which saves on my back. Start in choke position and have the option of low to high revs. There is no primer button that perishes after 3 months. Collects all the grass clippings so the kids dont walk it threw the house. Cuts the couch lawn with a carpet like finish and a very clean cut on the buffalo. Am very impressed with this mower. Purchased at $700 ...Read more

Good
Overall solid unit. Used twice. Seems quite heavy and hanlde flex noted when maneuvering due to unit weight.Good features, and noise level seems reasonable.
Australian made, good features, not too noisy, (2 stroke version)
Heavy, bottom end of handle flexes when tilting front up

Terrible
Would def not buy this mower again - previously had rovers with B&S engines for many years - loved them but new rovers are made in china (and are crap). Have to say this victa at $689 is not worth it and would def not recommend it to anyone. victa is just a basic poor quality mower as it always was.
Starts easily (honda engine)
Cuts very unevenly, means you have to go over strips of grass left standing - very unimpressive
