Very reliable and light on fuel
VW Passat 1999 1.9 TDi FWD / When i first bought this car i was surprised that it didn't feel like a station wagon at all. Mine was only a Highline i think, interior had premium feeling for car of its age, no squeaking plastic panels. The 110hp 1.9L engine is so light on diesel, average 5.5L/100Km, highway was below 5L/100Km, but noticed choice of tires made a difference. The diesel engine is quite noisy, especially during cold starts, reminding me of a Fordson Major tractor from the early 60's. With the low consumption there was still lots of t...Read more
orque, gets you up the hills without downshifts. Gearbox was a 5 speed manual that even with the car having close to 300.000 still felt nice and tight during shifts compared to other makes where you hope for the best that the right gear popped in! Everyone has enough legroom if you are normal build and boot space is big for its category, and mine had cargo net making it possible to load the boot all the way to the top. Problems i came across during the years i owned it: I refilled too much oil by mistake but did not think this would be a problem, even though it was just a couple of mm above the maximum line. The higher oil pressure caused a gasket on the engine pop out of its place, causing an oil leak, squirting oil at the CV joints. The following problem was that the rubber cover on these joints gathered dust and sand and broke quickly. Replaced a few CV joints before i realized the cause of them wearing out. The gasket on the engine was in such a bad spot, that the procedure involved a change of the timing belt (that already had to be replaced every 80.000km and costly). Changing timing belts this often is not a expense i want. Also if you live in colder climates you will most likely encounter problems with freezing doors. Doors are frozen that badly that you cant open them and when you somehow get them opened they refuse to close until the car has warmed up. Service your old Passat and I am sure it will treat you well. Although for a bit more money i would recommend the 2001-2005 model that is basically the same as the 1996-2000, but with upgraded interior, exterior, stronger engine and 6 speed gearbox plus other improvements. Alltrack Passat, great vehicle to own and operate
The Alltrack Passat is very smooth, quiet to drive and handles surprisingly well through the hills, we bought one recently and really impressed with the economy even though it has the diesel gate software update. We bought it used with 55k kms for a good price. We average around 6.5 combined hwy and city driving, a bit more than the catalogue states at 5.9L combined, I suspect this is from the diesel gate mod. The car is loaded with features, Sat Nav, reverse parking cameras, heated seats, automatic tailgate just to name a few and has a really ...Read more
elegant interior design. We looked for a while first at SUV's then to wagons and this one was the winner by far, couldn't be happier. The only downside is the service costs are dear, I'm fortunate enough that I can do the servicing myself, but even still not as cheap as any average car because the VW spec oils are more expensive than the run of the mill stuff, I rate the car 5 stars for the price range, if you own one or are going to buy one preferably opt out from the diesel gate mod if you want that ever so slight amount more economy or power.Similar opinion? The best car I have ever owned.
I bought my Passat Highline 2 litre diesel wagon in 2010 and have had 7 years of wonderful service from it. The car is so comfortable, powerful and yet frugal. It has been very reliable, never letting me down once. The only issue I have had is the air conditioning compressor which has been replaced twice but all done under warranty.

2016 132 tsi. Very disappointing
This car consumes an average of 1.6 litres of recommended oil between service intervals and deposits soot all over the boot of the vehicle, particularly noticeable as mine is white. My vehicle has also consumed 600 mls of coolant in 6 months/ 40000 klms despite being back to the dealership 3 times to find the cause to no avail. I was told at the dealership it was normal for coolant to need topping up. Last time it went from max level in the reservoir to minimum in 10000 klms meaning i have to take it in to be refilled between service intervals....Read more
Volkswagen also provide literature with the vehicle that oil consumption up to 1 litre per 1000 klms is acceptable meaning it could consume 19 litres of new oil at service and between intervals. The recommended oil is difficult to source and very expensive. I find this unacceptable on a new vehicle. My DSG box started intermittently making noise when shifting down from 4 to 3 at 30000 klms. Dealership said they checked it on computer and no error appeared so they said it's ok." Computer says!" I am now dealing with VW head office and the latest is they want to take my car for up to 2 weeks to see if they can sort the issues. I am a full time UBER driver and purchased this vehicle new specifically for the job and cannot afford to not work for 2 weeks. They have already had the car three times and have not found the leak. December 27th 2017 Update: This is a lemon to be avoided Just an update on previous report. Car has now been back 6 times for coolant consumption issue. Have had the thermostat housing and water pump replaced under warranty as they believed these were the issue but it has made no difference and the car now with 60000 klms continues to consume coolant at the same level. Today the car was in for the 6 th time for pressure testing and yet again no fault was found to explain the consumption but I have printed information from the dealership stating coolant consumption of 500 ml per 1000 klm is acceptable. So you could have to put 7.5 litres of coolant in, between service intervals and VW consider this acceptable The car also had a front wheeel bearing replaced today and a leaking oil cap which has been leaking for a long time but the dealership refused to replace it until I got VW involved

Love it!
I have been driving my Passat for a while now have not had a problem! Very good mileage out of full tank of petrol and an extremely smooth drive. The boot is huge for a sedan and would not need to move up into a bigger car once having children. Have had many people comment how luxurious the leather seats are and how much room they have when sitting in the back seat - even with 3 adults!! Although i have to admit my fave part is the seat warmers!!
Great car - no regrets whatsoever.

132TSI Comfortline R Line Wagon
Great vehicle for our small city family who do some highway travel to visit family. VW have refined the Passat package to a point where it is a very refined drive and feels like a more expensive vehicle. R Line package is pretty good with leather/heated/massage seats, slight lowering etc Ride is subsequently a little bit harsher though. ACC is brilliant for the city commute and fuel economy is v.good at 7 city and down to 5's on the highway. This is quite literally a superb vehicle and clearly the product of much revision. The only downside was having to deal with the VW dealership who made buying the vehicle unpleasant. VW Australia needs to take control of dealership behaviour as they have and are continuing to damage the brand.

This car really is perfect, I truly love driving it everyday.
Love the features, love the space and practicality of this wagon.
Easy to drive, comfortable and beautiful lines.
Great for city driving and long haul.
Great value and engineering.
This car is absolutely a must to test drive, anyone who drives it will be surprised at its capability for a car of this size, remember it's only a 1.8L turbo 4cylinder engine...

2006 TDi - great to drive, lots to break and dear to fix
Driving experience: Plenty of power, great road handling, reasonably quiet, lots of luxury - a charm to drive;
Consumables: using (mainly long distance driving) roughly 6 liters diesel / 100 km plus roughly 1 liter oil / 10,000 km (more than our other cars, but still acceptable)
Reliability:Ouch. We bought a 10 year old car (with 160k km) and learned the hard way that this seems to be the engineered life span. Replaced so far (in the first 16 months of holding): fuel pump (one grand and a bit), compressor for the A/C (another grand and a bit)...Read more

Great car so far.
I chose this car after testing a company car for a few months and being overall very impressed. I has been a nice, satisfying car to own with zero reliability issues in this first 50,000km.
Drive Experience: Easy to drive, great acceleration and handling, good comfort and visibility. Fuel economy is approx 7-8L/100km mostly city driving. Generally the best driving experience I've had in a road car of this class, aside perhaps from the Audi equivalent which is a cut above. The Alltrack has lower fuel economy from the 2x4 Passat but is defin...Read more
itely more grippy on wet roads, loose gravel and ice, so a must if that is part of what you will be driving on. My previous non-Alltrack had fuel economy that was at least 2L/100km better. Towing: I have done trailer towing with this car without issue, but no horse floats. I doubt it would be suitable for this kind of use long term. Parking: Rear camera and front/back sensors mean zero parking accidents so far. No complaints at all. Internals: Seat warmer is fantastic - I'll never buy a car without one in future! Seats are comfortable on long drives. Getting in and out of the car is not a problem, but many hands tend to dull the paint at the door handles over time. The layout of interior controls including steering wheel buttons is intuitive and easy. Integration with phone is the best I've experienced - a minimalistic, no fuss task of making calls and navigating music / radio without taking hands off steering wheel. All the necessary phone control information comes up on the centre panel next to the speedometer and is easy to read in a glance, without distracting from driving. I've rented many new sedans over the past few years and none have been as good in this regard.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Complete family car
This generation of Passat is a great car to drive. The steering has great feel and the car is still very comfortable to travel in. It has enough power to overtake on any type of road. my car is consuming around 7 litres per 100 after 10,000kms. The car requires premium fuel so add that to the running costs.
Overall its a very quiet car that can take in 5 people comfortably.

Good car let down by reliability issues.
First off, this is a great drivers car - handles well and flexible turbo engine. It's extremely well appointed with both luxury and technology. I have the Luxury and R-Line pack and there is not much else you can get for the money in this class.
I've had the car 6 months and already had numerous faults including:
1. Engine Oil Light after 8000Km, currently consuming 100ml per 1000Km which for a brand new car is appalling. I change cars every 3 years and I've never had any of my other cars need an oil top up between services.
2. DSG went in...Read more

Great European car for less. Value for money, loads of features
Got Passat B8 MY17 2.0 TDI with luxury pack. Inside out great for the price tag. Powerful 2.0 Diesel engine. Layout great, comfort great, features great, with message chair. I had Q7(MY11), A6(MY14), Amarok(MY13), LC200(MY11) and I did not think of Passat the first place. It is not as quite as Audi, and the sound system Audi is better (S-line), other than that, I rate it better than Audi, especially for similar luxury and power of A6, I paid $30k less.
Safety features are great, Phone connects (wired) to media center allowing you to use pho...Read more
ne apps on MMC avoid getting fine for touching your phone while driving, Adaptive cruise control, Lane assist, clear reverse camera with park sensors, blind spot assist, too much to list. Comfort features including massage chair, heated seats, automatic reverse parking, courtesy interior lights, huge back seat space with great leg room, sport style bucket seat, etc. Bi Xenon head lights are great, super bright and white, cornering lights are bright enough to see clear and far at night when turning. Great tail light design. Courtesy lights under mirrors/handles. Other feature beats more expensive rival including full size alloy spare rather than spare inflate kit.Similar opinion? Don't Buy a Passat
In 2008, we decided to downsize from our Holden Commodore and have a diesel engine with auto gearbox. No Australian-built vehicle matched this spec so we finally decided on a VW Passat.
Worst purchase we have ever made.
Although it drives well and has some good features, the cost of servicing and spare parts is horrendous. Pretty much for each service we kiss $1,000 goodbye.
After a very short period the windscreen washer seized up which cost almost $500 to have replaced.
Now, with only 48,000 klms from brand new, the fuel injectors have completely carked it and the cost to have them replaced is almost FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

Jekyll and Hyde
1200km+ on average per tank of diesel. Comfort and handling great. Noise quiet but do not use run flat or puncture-proof tyres...they are extremely noisy. Like all VWs the "sword of damacles" lies in the expensive repairs ie $4,000 DSG6 transmission/gearbox replacement, lousy dealer and service, expensive parts and servicing, company denial of faults.

Spacious and frugal
My first VW that didn't disappoint me. With a solid build and comfort driving, it is also an extremely frugal car to drive with an average of 800km per tank. It comfortably sits 5 grown adults and the boot space is just so spacious- probably one of the most spacious amongst the German made cars.
The only downside that I have is during take off where by you will need to step on the pedal tamely otherwise it will be having multi jolts before smoothen out.

Good Car.
Smooth driving car that is fuel efficient and quiet. The dashboard is set out well and easy to use. The car has been reliable so far and looks stylish. The main problems with the car is that there is an intermittent vibration/rattle within the dash on the drivers side. I have yet to take the vehicle for its first service that is due in about six months time so I will have this checked out. The automatic cut out for the engine whilst the car is stationary can be a nuisance as you have to manually deactivate it every time you turn the car on. The car handles very well and has a large boot as well which is perfect as a family car.

Great technology!
Passat 132Tsi, R-line and with the luxury pack: very well equipped vehicle, that is truly up there with the Mercedes C200, the BMW 320 and the Audi A4, at much less a price. The finish is outstanding, the drive exciting, and the technology top notch - ACC and lane departure in particular makes the vehicle semi-autonomous, and the all round sensors and anti collision systems have already saved me from reversing into traffic. The active instrument display is the future right now, and the interior beats at least one of the above, much more expensive vehicles. This is my 8th VW, and each has demonstrated improved innovation and safety features, and been extremely reliable
