I have a 3 month old bub who is very fussy with bottles. I am mixed feeding and have tried 3 different formulas but still not much works. She has had bad gas and wind problems since she was born and is a colicky bub. Can I give this formula a try while still breastfeeding?

My baby is on allerpro syneo for what we thought was a CMPA but she has had green frothy poos since (For 10days), could this instead be a lactose intolerance?

Hi Rachel, it is not unusual for poos to go green on the Aptamil Allerpro Syneo. Your baby is unlikely to be lactose intolerant, but please contact us at the Nutricia Careline where we have a team of dietitians and nutritionist to discuss this further. You can call on AU 1800 438 500 or NZ 0800 438 500 during business hours or LiveChat us by going to https://nutriciacareline.com.au/. Warm regards, Caroline - Careline Nutritionist

Hi, my daughter is 11 months and have been using delac formula after we realised she was lactose intolerant. How do I transition my baby to cows milk?

My son is 5 months now and we have been using delact for 3 months, I have seen the pediatrician about lactose intolerance and she suggested to start at 6 months with a tiny spoon of soy yoghurt and work our way to a spoon and if there is no reaction then try with soy milk. Not sure in your case but I would probably see a pediatrician about it.
Good luck!

Thanks Dom. Saw the paediatrician around then as well and have been giving her yoghurt / cheese etc and she is fine. Around 9 months we started cows milk with Weetbix and no vomiting. My paediatrician didn’t mention soy milk but will definitely use that if my daughter reacts to cows milk

Hi Jessica. Lactose intolerance in babies under 12 months is usually secondary, so related to a virus or bacteria reducing the amount of lactase enzyme produced by the gut for a 3-4 week period. Lactose is the main carbohydrate in breast milk and it maximises calcium absorption from babies milk to support bone and tooth mineralisation. Lactose intolerance is a dose dependent reaction and does not cause any gut damage, so starting with small amount of whole milk or milk formula (which you can mix in the same bottle with lactose free milk/formula) and increasing the amount of whole milk feed as lactase production in babies gut increases. Note that yoghurt and cheese contain almost no lactose due to the fermentation process (lactose is converted to lactic acid) so are likely to be well tolerated. Babies with lactose intolerance will often tolerate about half a cup of milk before symptoms become distressing.

Hi Michelle, a lactose free formula helps babies with diarrhoea due to a lactose intolerance. It does not help with constipation. Please give me a call to talk about the best option for your baby on 1800438500 cheers Sue Nutricia Careline Nutritionist.

Hi, I bought Aptamil De-Lact free as it helped my 10 weeks baby boy with his reflux a lot since I used it. But Just want to know the difference between this formula and the normal Aptamil gold. will it affect his growth?
Thank you

1 answer

Stuart S.Aptamil

Hi Jake,
The main differences between the Aptamil De-Lact and Aptamil Gold+ is that the De-Lact is 100% casein whereas the Gold+ (stage 1) has a 60:40 whey to casein ratio and the De-Lact is lactose free and doesn't contain any prebiotics. Although the De-Lact is appropriate when there is a lactose intolerance, in babies that can tolerate it, lactose can be helpful for bone and teeth mineralization. Please feel free to give the Careline a call on 1800 438 500 (AUS) or 0800 438 500 (NZ) if you would like to discuss this further. Kind regards, Saskia- Nutricia Careline

We have just changed from S26 to Aptomil delict because our baby progressed to bloated stomach, stomach pains, smelly poos and vomiting quite large amounts of food and milk. The delict has stopped all the previous signs and symptoms. We have noticed that some bottles look like they have curdled. We make 4 up at a time and the first one isn't curdled. We gave him a curdled looking one this morning as it had been in the fridge the whole time and he had no problems. Is this normal to look curdled?

Hi, I was recommended this formula by my dr, my Bub seems to likes the taste and drinks it well.
She has less gas also however I have noticed she poops less often and her poops have become more a dark green colour and more dry, harder for her to poop and is like the consistency of play dough.
Her poops previously on the aller pro formula were mustard colour and more loose.
Is this normal? Or should this be looked into?

We had the same problem at first but the benefit to our son from the De Lact formula far outweighed the slight constipation. We were advised by the nurse to add an extra 10ml of water to the bottle, or give 20-30ml of water between bottles to get things moving. Not sure how old your baby is but when ours started solids, we feed him a small portion of puréed pears everyday and he had no issues with constipation from then on. Good luck, it's not easy finding the right formula but the De Lact was the one for us.

Hi just wondering bubs was having the karricare A1 formula but it made her very chucky so I switched too the karricare reflux formula it's amazing keeps bubs fuller and no vomit but she is very constipated, is it ok to give her the old formula she was on the karricare A1 during the day and the thicker reflux one at night so she sleeps better? Or do you have any ideas on the constipation because I really want her on the reflux one! Thanks

1 answer

I am a first time mum to a 3 month old baby girl who I have on the AR formula and as its a thicker formula also made my baby very very constipated. I find giving bubs some water 1 and a half to two hours after a morning, afternoon and night bottle (60mls in total) keeps her stools soft. If your baby isn't used to drinking water you may want to try weak rooibos tea which is a little sweet and has amazing properties! Check them out here: http://www.theteatalk.com/rooibos-tea-for-babies.html

I only give my baby one tea bottle a day and that's usually her afternoon "water" bottle.

You may want to try just two water bottles and see if your baby needs more or less.

Hope this helps :)

My 3 month old baby has a lot of wind and it really affects him at night. Can I give him normal Aptimal gold during the day and the lactose free formula during the night feeds?

I could be wrong but I thought that if your baby has lactose intolerance then lactose builds up in their system. So if you were to switch formulas it would have to be for every feed? It took about 5 days when we switched from Aptimal HA to the De Lact for our little man to make a full improvement, but those 5 days were like a rare good day on the previous formula, if that makes sense. He was a totally different, happier baby on the De Lact.

I agree with manda21. Took my boy about 1 day to notice a difference and by about the third day he was a completely different baby again a happy and content baby :-) i would recommend just feeding your baby only 1 type of formula the de-lact one. Hope everything works out for u :-D

Hi, I have just changed my 10 week old bub to karicare Delact, he is very constipated and unsettled at night. I am wondering, on the tin it says not to store left over formula- to discard it straight away, does anyone keep the left overs for next feed? My bub never ever finishes a bottle and there is so much waste!! I know other formulas the leftovers can be kept from 12 - 24 hours. Thanks

Hi with a baby under 3 months old i wouldn't keep the formula... i defnitely keep it up to 2 hours for my older baby, but not when they are that young. If your bubba gets a bug it will be a lot more serious than when they are a bit older. Is the Formula helping your baby's constipation and unsettledness? If Lactose is not the problem (ie this formula doesn't help) I highly recommend Karicare Allerpro. Milk protein is broken down, so easier to tolerate, esp for such a young bubba. Good luck!

I have been using Aptamil DE-Lact since November 2012 and have now changed over to the New formutation De-Lact. Im on my 3rd tin I am noticing a gradual change in my baby. He doesnt ever have a full bottle any more, will only have maybe 3 full bottles in all, in 1 day. Is now chucking up a lot more than ever before. Is very windy and constipated and has a lot trouble sleeping. He was a very good sleeper. Has anyone else had this problem when the formulation has changed in their babys milk? Will it get better or should I change brands?

i have had this problem too its frustrating bub wont drink a full bottle which he use to gulp down also not eating his veggies (maybe due to upset tummy) bad nights and very windy explosive stools. he was doing great before they changed the formulation. Im thinking of changing brands to see if that fixes the problem...

Hi there, I've actually found that my bub tolerated the new formula very well, but now that we've had to go back to the old version because that's all we can find, he will only drink half the bottle and seems to like it less (although he never had a problem with it when he was on it before). So maybe it's just adjusting to the change in formula rather than the formula itself? I know a lot of people had this kind of issue when NAN changed its formula last year (I think it even made the news) but not sure what the outcome was there. Might be irrelevant anyway if Karicare can no longer supply either version of de-lact? Although I definitely don't want to move to S26. My son does NOT tolerate that stuff well at all. How frustrating...
