Hi, I noticed that there are no DHA and ARA on the nutrients list, and I would like to know is that really ok or would it be any harm to the baby? As I know these fatty acids are present in the breastmilk.

Nardia
Nardia ·

Dear Wai Ling,

Thank you very much for your email, and congratulations on the arrival of your perfect little one – truly wonderful! I too am a mum to a little one and completely understand the importance placed on such a vital decision.

Currently we do not add DHA or ARA to our infant formulas. These optional ingredients in formula are often produced using neurotoxins such as hexane, which makes them unsuitable for use in certified organic products.

The fats and oils in our formulas contain a balance of fatty acids and fatty acid precursors, which provide babies with all necessary fatty acids for healthy development, and allow babies to make DHA and ARA from the ingredients.

Bellamy’s Organic offers only 100% certified organic products and we will not compromise the organic status of our formulas by including additives that cannot be approved under organic certification standards, and are derived from a harsh industrial extraction process.

All infant formulas in Australia have to comply with a strict recipe as dictated by the Australian and New Zealand Food Standards and must meet all the complete nutritional needs of babies for the first 12 or so months of their lives at least. Our formulas meet these standards and we pride ourselves in the quality of the products we create.

You are always welcome to contact me at any time, here and happy to help and support in any way.

Wishing you all the very best,
Nardia

Dear Mandy,

So sorry for the first message, my computer completely froze!

Congratulations on welcoming your beautiful little girl into your family, truly wonderful!

Any changes in diet can cause changes in stool movements; frequency, consistency and colour. In Australia it is a requirement that all formulas are fortified with mineral iron for healthy growth and development of babies. The added iron can cause some stools to be green in colour and may cause some transient constipation, particularly when compared against stools from breastfed babies.

Babies go through amazing transitions in digestive function as they grow. Their tummy’s can be affected by all sorts of things including sickness, teething, and different and new foods or drinks being introduced. All in all however, you know your little one best so if you are worried, you should seek advice from your medical practitioner.

Welcome to our Bellamy's family!

Does this formula contains petroleum-sourced vitamins and sulfates?

Bellamy's Organic
Bellamy's Organic ·

Dear Elise,

Really lovely to hear from you, congratulations on welcoming your beautiful little one into your family - truly wonderful!

Infant formulas are the only suitable nutrition for babies who are not breastfed until they are up to 12 months of age. We use many ingredients to ensure that babies receive the very best nutrition for growth and development.

It is very important that babies get the right amount of vitamins and minerals to support growth in the first 12 months of their lives. The Australian and New Zealand Food Standards firmly dictate the levels of vitamins and minerals which need to be contained in infant formulas. We add various vitamins and minerals which are approved under the Food Standards and which are scientifically proven to be safe in foods. Many of the vitamins and minerals we add are in fact the same vitamins and minerals which are readily available as supplements for children and adults alike. These minerals include potassium chloride, sodium selenite and cupric (copper) sulfate mentioned.

We are sure you can appreciate that infant formulas cannot be identical to breast milk. Breast milk varies from Mum to Mum and from day to day depending on Mum’s diet and her baby’s requirements.

Specifically regarding some of the minerals we add to our formulas:

Potassium Chloride

Bellamys Organic adds natural potassium chloride to our formulas to provide your growing baby with good levels of potassium for healthy cell growth and development. Potassium works closely with sodium to regulate water and pH balance in human cells. Potassium participates in growing protein, carbohydrate metabolism for energy and is necessary for proper digestion as a part of the acid found in the stomach. Potassium is also involved in many other cellular processes. Potassium is needed for normal bodily functions, including those affecting the heart, nerve conduction, muscle contraction, and normal kidney functions and helps restore the body's electrolyte and water levels.

Sodium Selenite

Bellamys Organic adds natural sodium selenite to our formulas to provide your growing baby with good levels of selenium for healthy cell growth and development. Selenium is an important mineral as it is required in building and maintaining the immune system and acts as an antioxidant in body function. Selenium is also an important mineral used by cells that require thyroid hormones to function.

Cupric (Copper) Sulphate

Bellamys Organic adds cupric sulphate (otherwise known as copper sulphate) to our formulas to boost levels of copper for healthy uptake of other vitamins and minerals and supplying copper for your baby’s healthy development.
Copper is an important element in haemoglobin formation (used in the body for oxygen transport in the blood), as well as being involved in energy release and cell function. Cupric Sulfate is added to supplement food products as it increases bioavailability of other minerals and supplies Copper. It contributes to the body’s health by combining enzymes required for hemoglobin production, energy production and for connective tissue formation.

All of the vitamins and minerals we add are approved for the inclusion in foods and particularly in infant formulas. Our vitamin and mineral additions are also approved by NASAA (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia) as suitable for the inclusion in certified organic products.

Any vitamins and minerals can be harmful if consumed in quantities far greater than the body needs or consumed by people who may suffer from genetic, metabolic or general health disorders where their body may not process vitamins and minerals properly. In the right amounts (as with all food components including fats and carbohydrates) they are of benefit to healthy growth and development.

Always feel more than welcome to call me anytime, as a mum to a little one myself I understand and appreciate the enormity of it all!

Kindest regards,
Nardia

I understand you're aware of the froth created in this formula however it is hard to see when the milk runs out as the froth fills the teat and only after I pull the bottle out do u realise my daughter has consumed the froth. I hope this does not cause wind and discomfort, is there any side effects to the baby consuming the froth?

Dear Debbie,

As the entire contents have been drank by your darling little daughter, the intake of (if any) froth would be very minimal and would not cause an increase in wind and/or discomfort.

My daughter is 17 months old, has been completely breastfed during the first year. Now she is drinking both mother milk and cow's milk (full cream). So far she is developing well. Her immune system, language, fine motor and gross motor skills are good. The only issue about her is her weight. She weighted 4.5lbs when I gave birth to her, and she is only 16.5lbs now. I'm thinking of buying Bellamy 3 for her but am afraid this toddler milk drink may not help her gain weight effectively. Could you please recommend me which product that suits her best? Bellamy 3 or 2?
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Bella

Bellamy's Organic
Bellamy's Organic ·

Dear Bella,

Congratulations on your beautiful little girl, she sounds absolutely perfect!

It is certainly a tricky one; as our Step 2 is a formula meaning it is formulated to ensure it has all the vitamins and minerals for a little one's first 12 months. However, our Step 3 is a Toddler Milk - a cows milk replacement. Despite being served a wider variety of foods, toddlers still love milk, and they gain many of their essential nutrients from breast milk, specially formulated toddler milk or cow’s milk. Toddlers require two cups of milk each day to meet their nutritional requirements for calcium and fats, to support growth and development.

When weaning toddlers from breast milk or infant formula, our organic toddler milk drink is a preferred alternative to pure cow’s milk. While certified organic cow’s milk is the base of our toddler milk drink, we’ve added iron, calcium, zinc, and 13 other essential vitamins and minerals to support the rapid growth of your child. On top of this, our toddler milk also contains inulin, a natural prebiotic fibre which stimulates good bacteria for a healthy digestive system.

If you are concerned, have a chat with your GP and they will certainly assist you and support with the decision you may wish to take.

Hi,

There was a recent study conducted by an independent body that concluded several infant formula brands stocked in Australia had "potentially toxic" and "needle shaped" nanoparticles in them.

This study has been discredited/ downplayed by the australian and New Zealand Food Standard board but I'm curious to know whether Bellamys also has these particles?

The study didn't test Bellamys for some reason, but I'm worried (despite it being downplayed by the authorities) ! Im completely confused and torn about which formula to give my baby now, and which is safest.

Any information would be appreciated thank you!

Dear Tiff,

Lovely to hear from you, and it will be my pleasure to help alleviate any of your concerns.

The safety of Bellamy’s consumers is of the utmost importance to us. As an organic company, Bellamy’s can confirm it does not add whiteners, brighteners or anti-caking agents which are commonly used in the manufacture of consumable goods and can be a source of Nano-particles.

For your reference, please find below information regarding the Nanoparticle issue however as a mum myself, I truly understand your concern and always feel welcome to seek guidance from your doctor should you still feel concerned.

There is considerable differences with the ingredients as Bellamy's Organic is certified organic: the principles and the manner our ingredients are sourced are conducted differently from conventional brands which may include preservatives, anti-caking ingredients, synthetics, etc, all of which Bellamy's do not.

Hi Debbie

All formulas are very similar with regards to ingredients and nutritional content. I too tried all the big brands like Nan Pro, S26 Gold, etc. I also found my little one was very unsettled on the Nan Pro and with the S26 gold little one was constipated. Unfortunately it's a matter of trial and error to see what works best. Just like adults we all react differently to different foods. For my little one I swear by Bellamy's Organic. If I was you I would hesitate to try it, all the best!

I am a bit confused at the moment about switching to Step 2 formula. I know it is Casein dominant but what is the difference between Casein and Whey. I mean how they are different for the little ones: both taste and nutrition?

Bellamy's Organic
Bellamy's Organic ·

Dear Laiba,

Thank you for your enquiry regarding whey and casein proteins - absolutely more than happy to assist.

The primary difference between our Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula is the balance of milk proteins. Both formulas have whey and casein proteins but in different proportions. Whey and casein proteins are found naturally in cow’s milk, from which formula is made, and in human breast milk.

Our Infant Formula is suitable from Birth to 12 months. The whey and casein milk proteins are balanced in our Infant Formula so that the protein content is whey dominant, with 60% whey and 40% casein. This is a similar ratio to breast milk. Whey is gentler on little stomachs and easier to digest. It is important that a baby who is formula fed from birth or under 6 months, starts with a whey dominant formula.

Our Follow-On Formula is suitable from 6 months to 12 months. This time the protein balance is changed so that it is casein dominant, with 55% casein protein and 45% whey protein. We change the balance because, as casein is slower to digest than whey, it may keep baby feeling full a little longer.

The protein content and composition of infant formula is also regulated by the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, to which Bellamy’s products are compliant.

Please always feel more than welcome to contact me at any time if I can assist in any way, in the meantime take care and welcome to our Bellamy's family!

Hi! I would double check with your doctor and perhaps even telephone Bellamy's to discuss just to be sure and safe. The tin tells you how many scoops you need to mix; for a newborn, it is 1 scoop of formula per 60 mL of water. They suggest using cooled boiled water so it is sterile for the bub. And also they recommend putting the water in the bottle first measured exactly to 60 mL, then adding the formula, putting the lid on and giving it a really good shake so its mixed well :)

I started my son on Bellamy's 3 weeks ago (after having troubles with breastmilk supply). His poops having changed drastically - they are often greyish and quite thick, and he struggles a little. Is this a usual side effect of the formula (I've read that this could be due to the formula being made from cow's milk, but am unsure if that's true?).

Hi NAK
We have had a similar issue and I put it down to the same result, that it's a cow milk base. In saying that although they have substainally changed our baby is having much more regular poos rather than being constipated for serveral days. So although they look a bit different as long as they keep coming consistently that's a positive.
Hope this helps :)

Hi there
My I have an 11mth old boy who up until a month ago was only breastfeeding & eating solids. We introduced Bellamys Follow-on for 6-12mth olds 2.

He took to it, after a few attempts, however moaned & groaned all night. He woke frequently & his poos became frequent but resembled cow pats (sorry only way to describe). We decided 2 nights ago to try just breastfeeding again and see if this helped, it did & he slept for bigger blocks & no moaning. Only side effect is now my milk supply has slowed down a lot so we are going to have to go back to formula but we don't want to give him the same one as it didn't seem to agree with him.
Can you tell me would it be a good idea to change him to the number 1 formula instead, the non-follow in one? I've read it has a more similar make up to breast milk.
Thank you

Bellamy's Organic
Bellamy's Organic ·

Dear Kym,

Really lovely to hear from you, and most importantly, congratulations on your beautiful little boy coming into your family!

You are most certainly correct; we have 2 formulas – Infant Formula from Birth to 12 months and Follow-On Formula from 6 month to 12 months which your little one was currently on.

Both our Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula are nutritionally balanced organic milk formulas; made up from certified organic cow’s milk and essential vitamins and minerals.

The primary difference between our Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula is the balance of milk proteins. Both formulas have whey and casein proteins but in different proportions. Our Infant Formula is whey dominant with around 60% whey protein and 40% casein protein. Breast milk also has around 60% whey and 40% casein which does indeed aid in more sensitive digestion.

Our Follow-on Formula is casein dominant with around 55% casein protein and 45% whey protein. We change the balance because as casein is slower to digest than whey, it may keep baby feeling full a little longer. Follow-on Formula is suitable for babies from 6 months to 12 months and may be more suitable for babies who are being weaned off breast-milk, or who are starting solid foods.

Both will provide all the nutrition requirements your baby needs however our Follow-on Formula may keep your baby feeling fuller for longer and better complement the introduction of solid foods. It may also be more suitable for babies over 6 months that are new to formula. If your baby is satisfied with our Infant Formula and is over 6 months it is perfectly normal and safe to continue to use this up to 12 months. We provide the two choices because each baby is different and mums and dads are best to make the decision on what is best for their baby.

I am absolutely more than happy to speak with you in further detail any time, and assist in answering any further questions as we certainly want the transition for your little one (and for you!) to be as seamless as possible.

In the meantime, take care and welcome to our Bellamy's family!

Dear Laiba,

Thank you for your email, congratulations on your beautiful little daughter!

I would suggest preparing your formula and then dividing it into another bottle and popping one in the fridge - this way you will eliminate any wastage! You just need to ensure that you use the refrigerated formula within 24 hours. Once your little girl is ready for a feed bring the bottle to a suitable and safe feeding temperature, shaking the bottle to make sure any hot spots are evened out and test on your wrist. If your daughter doesn’t drink the entire bottle then you need to discard any unfinished feed after approximately 20-30 minutes.

Bellamy's Organic ·

Dear Crissy,

Lovely to hear from you and congratulations on your beautiful little addition to your family!

We have had many parents say that our formula’s taste the most like breast milk and that they taste better than other formulas. However, a baby’s pallet and an adult’s pallet is very different and what we might find tastes nice the baby might not necessarily like and vice versa. Babies take time to get used to new drinks and foods being introduced to their diets and it may take a couple of try’s before they will take to it.

The main thing that should be of upmost importance is the nutritional content. All infant formulas in Australia have to comply with strict nutrition guidelines as dictated by the Australian and New Zealand Food Standards and must meet all the complete nutritional needs of babies for the first 12 or so months of their lives at least. Our formulas meet these standards and we pride ourselves in the quality of the products we create.

We believe in providing babies with a pure start to life. We are the only certified organic brand, made in Australia, that offers a babies’ and children’s range from birth. All of our products are certified organic by NASAA (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture in Australia), which is Australia’s principal certifying body for organic and biodynamic produce, ensuring the entire organic supply chain maintains its integrity from paddock to plate. Our ingredients are always of the highest quality because they come from farmers and producers who abide by certified organic farming practices.

We have 2 formulas – Infant Formula from Birth to 12 months and Follow-On Formula from 6 month to 12 months. Both our Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula are nutritionally balanced organic milk formulas; made up from certified organic cow’s milk and essential vitamins and minerals.

Our Follow-on Formula is casein dominant with around 55% casein protein and 45% whey protein. Follow-on Formula is suitable for babies from 6 months to 12 months and may be more suitable for babies who are being weaned off breast-milk, or who are starting solid foods.

Once your baby reaches 6 months you can continue to use our Infant Formula or change your formula to our Follow-on Formula.

If in future you may be compliment feeding with breastfeeding and our formula you may be interested to know that you can actually freeze our formula for up to 3 months – in powder form, not made-up. If your baby is solely formula fed, 1 tin of formula should last you about 1 week depending on just how hungry your baby is. If you are breast feeding and supplementing with our formula, you may not use a full tin within 28 days of opening.

To freeze the product, you need to take it out of the tin. You can’t put the tin in the freezer as the lid is not air-tight. Take the formula out of the tin; we recommend putting it into airtight, freezer safe containers in individual feeding portions. This way you won’t need to put the formula back into the freezer.

However, if you don’t use all the powder and need to put it back into the freezer, make sure you do so immediately after use to avoid condensation building and affecting the formula powder. Make sure the air-tight, freezer safe containers are extremely clean and clearly labelled and dated. The powder will not freeze, it will be ready to use as soon as you remove it from the freezer – just scoop out what you need. Remember, to keep the scoop clean and sterilize it before you use it.
