I'd start by inspecting the battery connections it sounds simple but being lose or poor connections can cause grief, check all connections around the engine for something not right and are the spark plugs overdue to be replaced? if so change them it could be that simple and a set is only around $90 (Bosch) unless anyone else has better ideas you'll need a computer diagnosis after that

The E53 X5 towing capacity should be at least 2500kg, although I have seen figures of 3500kg as a max around the place

Hi. I've only had one major service in a year or so and all the power steering hoses needed replacing, as did the CV joint boots. It wasn't cheap at around $2000, but both those parts won't hopefully be an annual ordeal which dramatically added to the cost.

My mechanic quotes around $800 for a major annual service. Still more than a Japanese car, but then again, the X5 is SO much more enjoyable than the average car to drive.

You'll be in for more cost if anything goes wrong, that's a certain and there are so many electronics in the car that it's possible quite a bit can go wrong. Factor that in for sure, but if you get a good one and you're prepared for a bit of extra cost at times, don't let that put you off. We love ours and it will be impossible to go back to an 'ordinary' car. It is truly amazing. We do mostly city driving, but we've also done some long trips and arrived feeling so much more alive than in any other car.

Hope that's of help.

Hi. Servicing is at 25000km intervals. If it's just oil and the occasional air filter, it's not too bad. My last service was $980. But if they have to replace parts it gets very pricey. For example, when my rear brakes were replaced they do both pads and rotors, and it cost nearly $1000. Likewise, tyres only manage about 40000km and you won't get any change out of $2000 for four of them, depending on brand. I use a non dealer BMW specialist, who it's about 10% cheaper and is better.

Cheers,

Stuart
