One tablet left me with crippling stomach cramps and vomiting

    published

I bought caltrate bone and muscle 100 tabs from Coles three weeks ago. Had one tab and had a bad result, so I didn't have another one for several weeks. Last night, after dinner, I had ONE TABLET. It left me with such bad stomach cramps that I couldn't stand up straight, and I vomited several times.
I know that if you have too much calcium, there can be an issue, however ONE TABLET should not leave me like this.
I am so angry, so upset, and so very not happy.

    Good, but hard to open.

I have arthritis and couldn't remove the foil seal. I finally got a knife! I agree with another reviewer (Acess), a foil tab would help. I'll be prepared next time. Small once a day tablet is great. Please fix the issue with removing the seal.

Caltrate has helped me - proven results.

    published

I have been on Caltrate 600mg Carbonate and 1000IU of Vitamin D (also has Magnesium,Zinc and Copper) for 7 years after being diagnosed with Severe Osteoporosis at only 47 years old. Recently got a blood test for Vitamin D and Calcium levels. Vitamin D was at 79 and Calcium was at 2.41mmol/L (US = 9.64mg/dl).
So these figures tell me it is working for me. I have had no side affects.
Am on 6 monthly injections for the Osteoporosis now.

    too many side affects

    published

Too many side affects, after taking Caltrate Bone health for a mere 2 months, because I was told I needed calcium supplement, calcium deposits occurred on my right shoulder, this caused me great pain I could not move my arm for weeks, I was told I needed surgery. I stopped taking Caltrate the problem corrected itself, and surgery was not required.
I was also appaled to see Caltrate promoted in a fashion magazine as " our pick of this months must haves" this is a medical supplement and should not be made a 'fashion must have'.

    Potentially Dangerous

    published

I will never, ever take Calcium Carbonate with Vitamin D3. It's a potential recipe for atherosclerosis (plaqing of arteries). A quality D3 and K2 supplement will help the body better absorb dietary calcium (up to 20x) from veggies, fruits, meats, fish and dairy - so a calcium supplement should not be needed.

looking for a new calcium supplement

    published

Did not realize (until reading the VERY fine print) that Caltrate was made in PRC which, of course, translates to MADE IN CHINA! I was very surprised that such a huge, well known and trusted drug company would do such a thing. I will be sourcing a new calcium supplement. I guess they are not making enough money and need to outsource to cheaper labor ---

    Caltrate Plus and tiredness

    published

I realise your blog is 5 year's old but I have just commenced taking Caltrate Plus. One at night after a meal, as per instructions. I too have been unable to sleep well and do feel tired during the day. I am generally full of energy every day and this has come as a surprise to me. I believe there is nothing in those tablets that can cause tiredness, but nothing has changed lifestyle wise for me apart from the minute I commenced the tablets, I have had problems sleeping. I have investigated everything associated with not being able to sleep well and this is the very first time in my life I have had this problem.

I have no problem with the product in fact i am very happy with it, it is opening the container that is my problem the foil sealer is awful to remove and i don't have arthritis, it would be nice to have a small flap of foil to pull back making it much easier to open, i hope you can understand the problem and maybe help to make opening your product easier Thank You .

    Life saver

    published

Caltrate is literally a life saver I suffer from a calcium deficiency called hypocalcemia which causes my calcium levels to drop quite low I currently take 12-20 caltrate pills a day due to this problem and without I truly would be dead as having extremely low calcium levels can put you into cardiac arrest so taking the caltrate eliminates this for me. It's also fantastic as it is quickly absorbed I feel the tablets kicking in within an hour. Only suggestion I have is take with food I find it absorbs faster.
    Fantastic, reliable, lifesaver, cheap

Its an essential product for men and women. We cannot get enough calcium in our diet. This was recommended for me by my doctor. It is a good price compared to others on the market. It has no after taste or side effects. Also essential for teeth and strong bones
    Cheaper, no after taste

this is a great product at a very good price because it contains not only plain old calcium but all the things that calcium needs to work better and to be absorbed better in to your body cells so that it can keep your bones and teeth healthy
I'd bet that if a hundred people over forty were tested randomly for vitamin D deficiency a lot of them would be surprised to find that they were quite deficient, the same also goes for calcium, just look around you at all the curved backs on some of our senior cits.

I took this throughout my pregnancy (but always check with your healthcare professionals before taking anything while pregnant). It really helped not having to be as focused on getting my calcium requirements up. Especially when breastfeeding as you need so much calcium and have so little time. I found them easy to take although if you're not fussed on tablets they are on the largish side. I found they didn't have any nasty taste or side effects. I'll keep taking them even after I've finished breastfeeding as with so many women having calcium deficiency it seems like a good way to make sure you get that little bit extra each day. Doesn't have the high fat content of so many dairy products.
    Great for pregnancy

Essential for coeliac patients as malabsortion is always a concern.

Also vitamin D helps as well. Should be on the must take list for all coeliacs.
Easy to take and no side effects.

Is it true that Vitamin D3 when taken together with Calcium carbonate forms like a concrete on your arteries. Caltrate PLUS has both combined so wanted to check.

Vitamin D3 is very important. If you're not getting it from the sun you should take it in pill form (I read that the average adult needs about 5000-10000mcg per day, but everyone is different so check with your doctor for the right dosage). However, when D3 is mixed with calcium carbonate it can become like concrete in your arteries. Personally, I skip the calcium and take a quality vitamin D3 and K2 supplement together. This also increases the body's absorption of natural dietary calcium from foods like meats and dairy.
