Extremely disappointed.
After just eating a sandwich made Country Life (‘new improved’) Low GI gluten free bread, I reluctantly ask - why?
Why change that lovely, moist, tasty, stay fresh, great toasting, not too sweet, low gi, original bread that took me ages to find?
The new, so called improved bread, has no body to it, turns to a crisp bread when toasting, is dry an lifeless when used in a sandwich, does not stay fresh like the old one, seems watered down and worst of all, is just too sweet!
I have been using the bread for nearly 3 years now and I use ...Read more
up to 3 loaves a week and thoroughly enjoyed and recommended it to other coeliac’s, while being a mentor, but I am sad to say that I no longer will be buying or recommending it any more. I feel frustrated when recipes change for no apparent reason, or is the new recipe cheaper to make (as well as being dearer to buy)?

changes in my diet!
I agree with comments disappointed and extremely disappointed! New Improved white low GI bread certainly does compare with other gluten-free breads on the market- but this is why I don't like it! After toasting when I bite into it, it clumps and sticks onto my teeth, and the effects on my tongue indicate to me that far far too much rising is being used. Also it doesn't have that distinctive 'nutty' flavour - which not only gives flavour but assists the low GI especially early in the morning.
Previously I would sometimes have to search Woolwo...Read more
rths and Coles and come back the next day after delivery, now there are loaves and loaves on the shelves! Please Country Life Bakery take note of these comments! Similar to other gluten-free breads on the market; reduced 'nutty' taste, goes into little balls and sticks to my teeth, has effected my tongue indicating far too much rising, no advantage in the new sealed packaging

disappointed
Apart from the change of packaging which I find inconvenient, my problem is with the change of recipe. Why replace 1.3g sugar and 8.1g fibre per 100g with 3.5g sugar and 4.2g fibre? Definitely a backward step. This opinion is shared by other coeliacs with whom I am in contact.

Why not both recipees?
My title says it all, WHY NOT BOTH RECIPEES.. I have now tried all the types of the new recipees and have not changed my mind about any of my review, concerning the new packaging and recipee. Ive had worse breads in the past and so i really tried likeing it, but it feels like sand going down after mastication, as the texture is all wrong. Please, please reconsider all these changes and opinions.

Its a nice g-f bread that doesn't crumble apart. No complaints. I like the new product.
great comment - I've been GF for over 20 years & the previous CB recipes were a God send for pleasurable GF eating. Please, please, please bring some of them back.

LOVE the improvement!!
Wow! Had totally given up on Country Life GF bread because I couldn't stand the heavy, stodgy texture of it (always felt like I was eating a scone instead of bread!) Had resorted to paying ridiculous prices for other brands just to avoid buying CL and wasn't even going to bother trying the new version, but SO glad I did!! The new version is much more like regular bread and seems much lighter to me (and the slices seem a bit bigger too, or is that my imagination? always felt the previous version had tiny slices..) and the best thing is that y...Read more
ou can actually eat it as BREAD instead of having to toast it like most GF breads :) Genuinely impressed, and so glad to have a decent bread at a convenient place (i.e. my local Woolies) rather than having to trek to small boutique specialty shops and pay through the nose for something edible. Really surprised by the negative comments here because the last few times I've gone to buy it they've been almost sold out so obviously I'm not the only one that likes the improvements. MUCH better texture, taste (and size?); can freeze a loaf and still take individual slices out easily as required Increase in price is regrettable but still cheaper than the alternatives; packaging looks nice but inconvenient if you don't plan to eat an entire loaf5 comments
How do you use the current packaging to seal the bread for freezing? Gladwrap doesn't cling to it.
We open the pack, put four slices in a cliplock bag, separate the rest so it doesn't stick and then put the opened bag in a freezer bag. A bit of a performance but it works for us.
I either put a whole loaf in an airtight Tupperware container which works quite well to keep it fresh; OR..
I freeze the loaf and only take individual slices out as I need them. Since I'm the only Co... Read more

Stomach problems since buying newly packaged Country Life Bread
Since buying the newley packaged and changed Country Life Bread, I have experienced a lot of stomach problems. By chance, I discovered that a new preservative has been added Anti-Mould 282 which a lot of people with food intolerance cant handle. Why did they change a great product? Has anyone had a response from Country Life? I havent as yet.

You're so spot on it's absolute rubbish as is the packing that doesn't seal ... I was unwell too ... since Goodman Fielder took over Country Life has gone down the gurlger.
Wow, I'm so glad to read this! I have had nothing but bad ibs since I started buying it! ...and it has taken me a fortnight to work out the culprit! Bring back the old recipe, the new one might taste better, but at least the old one can be trusted...
It is worth contacting the company. I did this and it sounds like they have had many complaints. I was told that the more feedback they get, the more chance of the manufacturer changing it back. I was given this phone number: [number removed]

It is awesome that this new recipe is now available & I can finally once again enjoy a slice of bread. Well done Country Life Bakery....Best move you could have made my opinion, & the opinion of a couple of my friends who are also ceoliac. Gold Star to Country Life!!!!

Love the 'new & improved' version
I really don't understand why the new version has so many bad reviews! I love it! Finally a gf bread that doesn't need to be toasted, it's so soft I almost imagine I'm eating normal bread.
I love the bigger loaf too, and for the same price I'm pretty sure. The new packaging is slightly annoying but it means it lasts longer unopened which is great. I just freeze mine it lots of 2 slices when I open it.
Again I say this bread is delicious!!!
Soft, stays fresher longer if unopened, bigger slices, delicious!

Did not like the old recipe (smelled strange) Tried the new and improved recipe version today - it's delicious. I will start buying this brand now instead of Zehnder.

New recipe a big disappointment
I was a truly loyal buyer of the original Low GI Country Life bread. In fact i had to get to the supermarket early to get it as it was so popular. Now i notice the shelves are stacked with it because no one likes it. The 'new and improved' recipe is not improved. It has that starchy taste that poor gluten free products have. It also is heavy and therefore makes me feel full and bloated when I eat it. The new packaging can't be resealed once open so the bread doesn't stay fresh. I would really like to know why the manufacturer felt they needed to change what was a great recipe? Bring back the old recipe.
Bring back the original recipe it was so much better

Now Contains Soya Flour (I have just pinpointed that the new bread has been making me very unwell)
Please bring back the old recipe, i have been feeling very unwell the past few weeks and have just realised you have soya flour in the new bread and i cannot tolerate soya very well. I was really happy with the old product, and dont like the new packaging as others mentioned its not resealable. Also, the kids didn't like the way the bread toasted, nothing like the old product.
Not suitable for our needs

It might be new but it's certainly not improved
I tried the new version of the country life mulitigrain bread and I'm extremely disappointed. Since being diagnosed with Coeliac Disease in 2009 I've been a loyal customer and after trying the so called "new and improved" bread it is extremely disappointing. Firstly it's in a non re-sealable packet which doesn't keep the bread fresh, I put it in a sealable glad bag and on first try it still tastes bad untoasted, when toasted it goes rock hard on the edges and it's chewy. I only had it two days and used two slices when I went to make my lunch it...Read more
fell apart and could not be put in the toaster so I had to throw out the remaining bread. At $6.00 a loaf that's expensive rubbish. I've now switched to Schar brand bread which is not ideal but at least it doesn't fall apart after two days. Normally I'd resort to making my own bread but being in the construction industry I'm about to start a fly in fly out job and won't have time to dedicate to bread making. I don't know why they felt the need to change something that was working well. fell apart, non-resealable packaging, chewy, toasts rock hard even on light setting.Similar opinion? New recipe is good fresh as well as toasted.
My sister in law made me a salad sandwich with the Country Life standard white bread and I was very pleasantly surprised. I usually avoid sandwiches as I just end up pulling out the filling and leaving the bread behind, but I ate the whole thing and could have gone back for a second! The new Low GI White (my usual choice) is just as good. This bread could be used for fairy bread for a child's party, or to make ribbon sandwiches for a high tea.
I would love to thank the smart person who thought to put the loaves in sealed packaging. Final...Read more
ly we can be assured that the loaf we are purchasing has not been contaminated by someone opening it to check the bread out. Sure, you have to seal the bread in a container or bag once you have opened it, but who wouldn't be happy to do that for peace of mind. Thank you Country Life! The new loaf is larger, so although the cost has increased its actually cheaper per slice. The new packaging is sealed (see review). The bread is great fresh too! Although improved, it is still gluten free bread! Not technically a con, but there will probably always be room for improvement with gluten free bread!Similar opinion? What happened to old recipe?
the new recipe is a disgrace, once openened you need to put the loaf into a sealed bag as this is no longer provided, after half hour of having a sandwich I'm hungry as there is no longer any substance in the bread it tastes like a cheap white bread you would pay $1= for instead its gone up 90 cents to $6.50 bring back the old recipe!
No bag, tasteless no substance, expensive.

So disappointed I will not be buying their products anymore.

Yeah...$6.50 plus for a loaf. Packaging is a joke. Slices sticking together another joke. After attempting to separate the slices, half the loaf is destroyed. Why should we have to freeze the loaf, and struggle to separate the slices when it is a SLICED LOAF already? Unfortunately this is the only bread my Wife can eat so I suppose we will have to continue paying top dollar for 6 damn slices...

It's a pain alright. Well and Good make nice bread mixes. Perhaps your wife could tolerate those?
Also "Living Well" make nice crumpets and soft rolls both of which toast nicely.
Hope this helps.

Why is it that I have to spend $6.50 to get a loaf of this bread only to find that the bread sticks together in places and I end up with 4 or 5 slices that are broken into pieces? Also I find it so difficult to get Multigrain bread. It doesn't matter whether I go to Coles, WW or IGA, by the time I get there there are heaps of loaves of white or low GI (I hate them both) and absolutely no Multigrain except on the odd occasion. What's going on??

Hi Deb. If you are still able to eat this bread try freezing it first before you attempt to separate the slices. I can't have it anymore because CLB have added soy. I have heard lots of complaints about the so called "improved" loaves...soy : ( crumbling and difficult to unpack.
I don't think it's because we are a mob of wingers. There are genuine issues with the "improved" loaves. Hope my suggestion helps.
Thanks Avigayil. The thing is this new improved loaf was quite good at first- for the first time ever I was able to take a sandwich with me for my lunch- but only the multigrain one, which i can rarely get!!! I am sorry to hear you can no longer eat it..goodness knows, there is very few things you can eat when you have allergies, and then when another thing is taken away, there doesn't seem much left does it???
