Poor after sales service from Garmin
Bought Garmin 76 in Feb 2012 from a Gladstone fishing store. Took to Heron Island. The unit never worked, failing during intitial start up. Returned to store via colleage in July 2012. Claimed 4 weeks turnaround. post 8 weeks, store said Garmin stated store did not have an account with Garmin.
Store re intitulised account claiming Garmins fault for dropping them of list. Store said there were 10 units at Garmin for repair infront of mine. Expect 2 weeks delay. Now a few days out from Decmenber 2012 with still no word and no GPS product that was paid for 11 months ago.
Never worked

Durable and long lasting, has been used heavily for the last 2 years and still reliable
Purchased this GPS in October 2009 and use it solely for fishing from my kayak. It's been incredibly reliable and durable and hasn't let me down. Have the coloured one and it's quite easy to read and to navigate through the options and settings. You can preset all your favourite markings, which for me is essential.
Battery life is quite good and the satellite reading has been incredibly reliable. The only time the navigation has let me down is during really heavy fog, but I know that everyone else out on the water that day was experiencing the...Read more

Good
A great unit although starting to show it's age with the number of topo map base models now available. I'd still rate it above the eTrex and most of the other brands for recreational use
Very durable; menu is very easy to use and has an excellent range of features; had no problems with the screen visibility; reasonable coverage under tree canopies although an external antennae improves its immensely; good battery life; light weight (neoprene cover is worth the extra cost for extra protection and the belt clip)
Screen could be larger... the colour version would have been a good option but not essential

I'm interested in having a "breadcrumb" track shown on the screen for when I bush walk (for easy returns) but the manual is not that user-friendly; any clues?
Thanks Dave

You can set the position recordings manually in the setup. They can be based on Distance traveled or on Time Interval. For busy walking I found time based 30 second recordings give a great breadcrumb trail especially through thick bush when progress might be a bit slow. In open country or on the sea, 100 meter intervals are great and offer recording of long distances. However you can reduce this down to 10 meter distances and get great detail. The points will run out sooner so not good for very long trips. There is also the automatic mode where the machine will change the recording interval to suit the speed you ar travelling at. All done in map set up.
