The DVD part is a small inconvenience compared to the quality and price of the product. I've had it for several months now and could only say that this is a fantastic tv and DVD and any issues or questions are answered by Kogan promptly. I have also read about the service being quite good if anything does go wrong so I have complete confidence. So much so that I've just bought the PVR.
Excellent picture quality, prompt service to answer any questions.
The DVD 'turns off' when you are watching tv. This means that if you want to flick on a channel while you're in the middle of watching a DVD or you want to turn the tv off, it doesn't save your spot in the movie; it always goes back to the beginning.

So far quite a good TV. Had a part replaced after 8 month but Kogan did courier the TV from and back to me at their cost. Spend a bit extra and get the extended warranty.
Excellent value for money and extended warranty cost. Picture quality is excellent for both TV and DVD. Has EPG. Sound is good. After sales service is prompt and professional.
Can freeze periodically with remote becoming unresponsive.

    I have a KALED32DVDWA.

It appears that the PVR will only record when the screen is active.

If you can only record when the TV is "playing" this feature is virtually useless. Most requirements for using the PVR are when a person will be absent or otherwise not able to view a program at the usual broadcast time.

Is this normal or do I have a fault?

Since purchasing and using the separate PVR, I would assume that what you are experiencing makes sense. Kogan (and any salesperson) will tell you what the product can do - not what it can't. That is what you are to figure out before purchasing. The PVR won't have two tuners therefore it will not be able to tape one channel while watching another and I also assume that the PVR is like the DVD within the TV, the PVR will turn off if the TV is in standby. Kogan are good with service. I suggest you confirm the problem you have with them but I doubt you will have the problem 'fixed'.

Is the DVD in this TV, Region Free?

I don't know as I don't have different regions but a major problem we have is that if the dvd unit isn't in properly (we are lucky to have dodgy wiring somewhere) the remote won't work. It will turn on the tv but that is all. I was told I could remove the dvd and send it to them to check it out but if, for example, it is the wiring from the dvd to the tv and the unit itself is ok then I have to pay for the time, labour and postage. I now have to not touch nor move the tv for fear of disturbing the wiring.
The dvd is also quite noisy when playing.
