This Maglite is certainly on the precipice of a Bad rating.
I bought the Maglite XL50 because of two facts, I love my Maglites and it was $25 at Bunnings warehouse - cheaper than some American website prices and less the exorbitant postage costs now to send to Australia.
Its a Basic 3 battery with a cradle type of light, seemingly Maglite has put this torch into a few of the cheapish torch basket(s) - all those $6 torches you get on cashier counters are 3 battery configured... Unfortunately the fit and finish of the light did not impress from the start, since I opened the packaging and got my hands o...Read more
nto the torch I felt the urge to take it back instantly - this unlike anything I have bought. After reading the user manual and then the warranty (in detail) which does not cover LED failure or a few other things which other torch manufacturers do cover for a lifetime - Maglites Australian importer only covers the torches for 10 years and makes it costly for the consumer to send it back to them also. The battery cradle is built strong enough, I cant see how people all around the world are breaking this in their XL50's? The battery contact set-up is not what I would call foolproof nor fail-proof either way, I have seen this type of set-up in LED Lenser's and its a far better configuration than Maglites idea - just not my kind of idea in a EDC torch - too fiddly for me thanks. The finish on the torch is anodising over aluminium and its a Type 2 system, its not scratch resistant nor able to survive dings and knocks, it will scratch easily and go very ugly pretty quickly. I found that the threads were especially scratchy and were in need of lubrication, galling of these threads would have occurred if they weren't greased up soon after purchase. The LED emitter is on a green pcb board, the LED possibly a Cree XPE - unlike the earlier model XL50's which were set on a yellow board and had a older generation LED chip. The board in my XL50 numbered '107' numbered boards give off a good white light and it had a good spot without many features in the beam at long or near distance. Its not overly powerful at 137 lumen's however useful and ample to see about 100 meters away easily, the spot to flood function is absolutely useless and I did not use it once. I also found that the lens 'glass' which is plastic like in all Maglites is very thin and what felt like the plastic off a coke bottle. I managed to exchange the OEM lense to a Mini Maglite lens however this threw out the dimensions of the inner workings and overall did not work out well...1 comment

Had the rear clicky button go funny on me - had to return it and didnt bother with a replacement either... Shame that Maglite are not what they started off as a durable professional grade torch!
