A great price and size compared to other systems.
The Maze Bokashi system so far seems great- the construction is sturdy, although the lid does require a bit of a push to close properly. I haven’t yet filled it all the way and left it to ferment but presuming the spray does it job in this regard. A great price and size compared to other systems.

Maggot Hotel!
I’m so disappointed with this product. I bought it online a few weeks ago via Bunnings and it’s already totally maggot infested. I’ve followed the instructions to a t and used the spray every time I put food scraps in, but it’s just beyond gross. And although the lid ‘clicks’ each time I close it, it’s definitely not airtight as I can actually see flies getting in and out around the rim.
I’ve just read some of the below reviews (which I wish I’d read before buying) and see that this is a recurring problem. So can you please contact me to try to arrange a solution? I really don’t want to give up on composting already. Thanks.

Flies and maggots
After having it for couple of weeks, bin started to have maggots and flies in it. We are extremely cautions, leave food in a bowl and bin it once a day, minimise opening and closing. The tap also leaked so i ended up having juice on my bench. It just doesnt seal properly. Just realised a lot of people had same issue as i do. I wished i read this much earlier.
Purchased for $68.00.

Maggots invasion!
We bought 2 of these bins from Bunnings a few months ago and we have had many dramas with them since then. The plastic base that is inside the bins is not properly attached so we lost both when emptying the bins in our local community compost bin. But the worst part is that, as many people complained, the bins are not air tight so we have hundreds of maggots inside the bin after a few days every time ! Completely disgusting. We are following all instructions properly, using the bokashi mix every day, emptying the juice every other day but it just doesn’t work.
Don’t invest in these bins, that’s just a waste of money! The design needs to be changed for it to actually do what it is supposed to do.

Maggots galore
I was excited to use the bokashi bins over Christmas but found with the finished bin it was really stinky so opened it only after a week and saw a lot of fat maggots! I've been really careful with only opening the bin once a day, spraying 7 times and adding lots of bran so was shocked (and grossed out!). On the internet I researched and it said that the fermentation process usually kills them so I added a lot more bran (plus salt) and closed the lid...but after a few days my husband saw the maggots had not died but matured so he threw the whole...Read more

I wished I saw these reviews earlier as we have spent a lot of money these few days getting excited about composting and buying a whole heap of Maze products (including a new compost tumbler) and didn't realise the maggot problem could be caused from lids which are not air tight.Purchased in December 2021 for $39.00.

Maggots!
Both the bins we have bought have maggots....a lot of them. The lids simply don't seal properly. I have emailed the company using the address on this forum so I hope I get a quick resolution as hubby and I have a compost disagreement and I'd really like to persist! The actual compost breaks down really fast and otherwise happy, just can't continue with maggots in the kitchen.

Not airtight
I bought 2 set from Bunnings. I have trialed it on both in the set and have ended up with fruit fly larva each time, despite making sure the lids are closed and even placing a brick on top. These lids are not airtight - I will have to look at other options.

I recently bought a Maze Bokashi bin on the recommendation of a close friend who was raving about hers. For some time now I have wanted to find a solution to putting so many food scraps into landfill - and this is it! It's perfect for us as we have no room for a outdoor compost bin. It has a very good seal so it never smells in the house, and doesn't attract cockroaches or flies. It fits a decent amount of kitchen scraps (and a good variety too - including meal leftovers), especially after you push them down and spray them with the Liquid Bokas...Read more
hi. The end product is a fantastic compost base that I can easily bury in my small garden beds to bring new life to the soil. My garden is now thriving with worms to break down the compost, and my flowers are thriving from the vinegar liquid that comes out of the scraps. I would highly recommend Maze Bokashi bins!Purchased in December 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse for $68.00.

Fruit fly maggots in lid
I bought 2 sets of the twin pack 12 litre bins and have a system of rotation because we have a large volume of food waste. I was thinking of adding another 2 bins to the system but so far all 3 I have emptied after fermentation have had fruit fly maggots inside lid. I would only open current bucket once a day at night and use quite a bit of the spray each time and am emptying liquid every 2 days and then at end of week I did not open again for 2 weeks. I can actually see fruit flys crawling under the lid and they must be getting all the way in ...Read more

Green mould and fruit flies!
I bought this Maze Bokashi in an effort to be environmentally friendly and reduce waste.
I followed the instructions correctly and even made an effort to cut vegetable scraps into small pieces. Unfortunately, I kept getting GREEN MOULD!
I then did some extra research and decided to add shredded newspapers. Still, no change. Even WORSE! I opened my Bokashi bin to find a lot of fruit flies and maggots. It's disgusting.

want to be breathing green mould / fruit flies or maggots! I believe the reason that the bin is not effective is because the top lid is not tightly sealed! It warped over time, even though I keep it inside in a shady area!Purchased at Bunnings Warehouse.

Leaks, from both ends
We bought the twin pack from Bunnings about 6 months ago. The first issue we noticed was the leaking from the tap. We used silicone to fix that. The second issue has been maggots. We thought it was us, but we have been careful with following the rules and the only thing I can think is that the units are not airtight. The maggots are not dying off after a few days as they should. Is it really this hard to Bokashi?

Maggots and fruit flies
Bought my first Maze bokashi bin from Bunnings and after letting it sit for its 2 week ferment, opened it up to a small swarm of fruit flies and maggots scurrying away. While smell doesn't eminate from the bin, I'm assuming it isn't airtight as it should be as oxygen can clearly enter. Have started filling up another bin from a different brand with no problems so far..

My 12L is not airtight either
Bought 17th. Returned and exchanged next day as strainer was damaged. Set up 19/9/19 and seemed to work. Despite compressing and spraying as instructed (but daily), on 26th nasty odour noticeable, Yesterday tiny maggots appeared on insides especially top back. Removed with wet hand towel which went into green bin outside. Today more back in thick clusters - some fell onto bench-top

Great Composting System
The great thing about this compost bin is that its aesthetically nice to have on your bench top and doesn't take up too much room. It's a good sturdy design and easy to assemble with a valve to remove the excess moisture that can get built up and a paddle to compact the waste down to make room for more. I really like the fact that this bokashi system means i can add cooked foods and meat and dairy - meaning minimal food wastage! Super happy with my purchase!

I’ve had a benchtop Maze composting bin for nearly two years
“I’ve had a benchtop Maze composting bin for nearly two years. It fit perfectly into my deep kitchen sink and I would empty 1-2 times a week into the outside compost bin. However it was quite stinking when full and the lid sadly cracked and broke. I’ve since upgraded to the Boskashi Indoor Compsting system Twin pack...absolute game changer!! When one bin is full I can place it on the back porch to break down and sub in the second bin in the meantime. The contents are by far, less odourous and the lid has a fantastic seal on it. Requires design adjustments
The main design flaw is that the plastic nut supplied to screw the tap on from the inside fits snuggly within a small nook that holds the nut flush. So when installing the tap, you can't just hold the tap and twist the nut to install it. Instead, the tap has a thread on the end of it which is pushed through a hole at the bottom of the unit. Within the unit you screw the nut onto the end of the tap's thread and after a couple turns the nut is held in place by two dividers, so you can no longer turn the nut from the inside and you're forced to tu...Read more
rn the external tap itself to tighten the nut. Unfortunately because of this, getting the desired angle for your tap is a real nightmare. Remember that the tap needs to be extremely tight to avoid fruit flies, that means a very specific angle - very hard to explain, but extremely annoying. Questions & Answers
Kathy S.asked
Hi, I recently returned my dual Bokashi bins to Bunnings as the lids were not sealing. After reading the reviews it sounds like there is a gasket in the lid to ensure an airtight seal?
Could you please confirm this as I am keen to compost as much waste as possible and these systems seem ideal.
Cheers
Kathy

Ronen M.Maze
Hi Kathy, yes there is a rubber gasket in the lid that should make it air tight. In the last production the gasket was a bit different so this caused some issues with some bins not being airtight. Our 18L Indoor Composter has a different sealing lid and we have not had any issues with that version.
Hi Ronen,
Thanks for your response. I will see if they are available online again to repurchase the two bin pack.
If it doesnt come with a seal will you be able to assist?
Cheers
Kathy
Ronen M.Maze
Hi Kathy, i suggest waiting a couple of weeks as then we will have a new seal which should be more reliable. Please email me at [email protected] in a couple of weeks and i will confirm if we have it.

Hi I am also having trouble with the Maze system I was given for Christmas. Like the other reviews I read I ended up with a bin full of maggots and one day on opening my bin a group of flies escaped into my kitchen. I have only been opening my bin once a day and doing 2-3 sprays a time. It was a very unpleasant experience with the flies escaping and having to clean all the maggots out of the bin. The odor was also very unpleasant making me feel quite ill. Any advice or help would be great as I really want to be able to use this system effectively
1 answer
It is definitely a seal issue. I weighed down the lid with a heavy pot and the maggots died overnight. Maze have offered to send me replacement lids. See if they will help you too if you reach out. In the meantime you can keep on composting if the lid is kept down with a weight.

I have filled my indoor 12L and am using my 2nd indoor composter. I was draining the liquid from my full bin just checked the top one is full of mould. Is it normal or not? Also once it was full I stopped spraying. Plz help

Hi Dinan, Mould is not a problem especially if it is white or grey. You can stop spraying but please make sure to keep draining the liquid.
