Take care of your Sprinter!
Hi folks)
As a man who drives so many cars I can say that Sprinter is a pretty good choice if you know how to take care of it! Since I used to drive long distance I try to check it every 6 months without looking at the number of miles. It's like going to a doctor regularly LOL).
Generally speaking the car is reliable. But honestly, I'm a big fan of Germans!
Running costs would also go down if you do your regular checks. I could write a long review, but I'd better point out one of the most important things in my opinion.
Do check oil more frequently and make sure you know how much you need.
It all depends on ur model, year and engine.

For ur convenience u can find some sort of table in the Web. I use the one on this site for instance: http://cararac.com/engine_oil/mercedes-benz/sprinter.html Oh, I've almost forgotten my fav part about mercedes that stands out among others - is soundproofing! Germans are the best!!

Dont buy a second hand Sprinter.
Unless you have a bottomless pit of money don't buy a second hand Mercedes Sprinter.
A great van up until something goes wrong, the all hell breaks loose.
Was quoted $8000.00 dollars for an ECU fitted to the vehicle and IT MAY NOT solve the problem.
This all eventuated from the auto gear box being stuck in 1st gear.
Just for the diagnostics on the vehicle, without any parts, the cost was $1900.00 dollars.
The verdict so far: it MAY be the ECU at $8000.00 dollars as Mercedes don't and wont use second hand parts.
It MAY be the gearbox at $7000.00 dollars.
It May be any 1 of a hundred or more sensors not "talking" to the main ECU.

There are over 7 A 4 pages of codes that could cause the problem. The vehicle is uneconomical to fix and the laughable thing from the Mercedes people, Queensland government is silly enough to continue to buy them. As i said great when new but once over 150,000 ks, don't bother.

Most reliable van out there in my opinion.
These vans are great, reliable vans!
As a mechanic, I worked on these vans & apart from rust, all of our vans did 500,000 & I'm not just saying that. Servicing was carried out every time dash warned it was due, only problems I encountered on a couple were, Seized in injectors & poor fuel pressure sensor at back of rail.
Had 1 engine with a broken crank at 520'000 miles, but little else.
No major costs involved otherwise & a replacement engine from Mercs was only £8000, so engine in in a day & back out on the road.
The firm running them ab...Read more

Poor Quality
I have a 2006 Sprinter motor home. The transmission failed the day it crossed 30,000 miles. These vehicles do not have a transmission temperature gauge nor a dipstick to measure the fluid level. There is no way you can tell if there is a leak in the transmission until the damage is done. The first scheduled transmission service is not until 40,000 miles. $4,000 and the cost of a week in a motel down the drain. Also note that Mercedes is totally unprepared to make this repair if you use their remanufactured transmissions. It has to be ship...Read more
ped from Germany- 2 weeks minimum. No Mercedes dealer in the Northeast had one in stock. It drove well and get good mileage Transmission failed at 30,000 miles. A Chevy Vega would have been more reliable.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Shortly after buy started having problems, def light coming on, they say that was normal, didn't matter if the fluid was full or not. Just replaced particulate filter $2400, cdi computer box. $2200, engine light stays on they want $1000 to fix it but I can drive with it on. Don't buy or you'll be sorry

Numerous problems on delivery.
I thought paying the extra money would get me a quality vehicle. Not so. This is a 4x4 519 2014 Sprinter van. There has been a noisy transmission since new and it just get ignored by the dealer. So loud only when warm that it causes headaches. Diff has already been "fixed" and drive shafts "balanced". Both front seats are to be replaced at 7000km as they are coming apart at the stitching. The rear barn doors leaked water and had to be fixed by a local repairer as MB said the new vehicle needed a new rubber seal. Took the repairer about 2...Read more
0 minutes including a lot of testing with a high pressure water hose. The MB fitted tow bar distorted the plastic foot step which then jammed the rear doors such that we could not open them. Turns out they left out some spacer things. Everything takes 2 days at the dealers and then they tell you they are waiting for parts. Cannot recommend MB at after having had several other brands. Thought I was unique, but when I started to talk about the problems, I found many others that were worse than mine. Not worth the extra money and certainly not the quality that they used to be. Oh yes, because it is a Sprinter 4x4, they don't have roadside service. You have to pay extra for that.... And you need it.2 comments

it. The dealer has been ok in accepting the problem, but their own service has been bloody awful and expensive. Last service I had to take it back 3 times for correction. The technician failed to connect the plug on the new fuel filter. None of the brakes were tested and the handbrake needed BIG adjustment. The sump and transmission guards were not reinstalled properly with a large main bolt to hold it to the chassis left out. checked to see what size the bolt and found that the mounting bracket to the chassis was also left out. Oh yes, the new bearing fitted to the noisy differential meant an oil leak now from the diff housing. Took it back a couple of days later but the bins had been emptied. Leaving the dealer it went into limp mode. Some setting concerning the new air filter was not reset as part of the service. They had to get the bracket manufactured. The noise problem, under instruction of MB head office has been back to the dealer so many times, I would have to count them from my diary. They insist on replacing bit by bit and suggest come back if it is still a problem. I tell them that you have to do 12Km plus for the noise to start. I ended up by putting a tracking device / recorder in the vehicle and the testing was originally 1.4Km then 4.6Km. They sure as hell did not like it when I suggested that the problem was not to found until they had done a trip to warm the transmission. Last time, they actually did a good test and have me coming back in the new year for another 2 weeks while they take out the rear axle, send it to Sydney from Canberra to be looked at, fixed, but I'm not told. I just know I don't have the vehicle again. Please would it not be easier to just replace the bloody thing. I asked how they were going to test it without the rest of the truck. The shrug of the shoulders indicated more problems to come. I thought it was just me or my vehicle. Have now spoken with lots and lots of others who have been experiencing similar support from the Mercedes Company. Cannot recommend this vehicle or the support. Certainly not value for money.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

There is something to be said about servicing times and warranty.
Our 2011 sprinter has been a good car until now it has 260000 Klms on it, 60000 Klms out of warranty, first service for the gearbox should have been at 320000 Klms . It did not make completely shatter the flywheel, clutch plate, presure plate and the gearbox stuffed completely. There was no warning signs. Always have been service every 15000 Klms, all long distant highway work, driving along bang jumps out of 6 th gear and had to be towed from Longreach back to Brisbane. Contact MB for some sort of assist with repairs that cost $13000.00, ummm...Read more
sorry no. We also have 2 VW Crafters cannot go pass these vehicles price $30000.00 cheaper than MB, warranty 3 years unlimited Klms. Yes they do breakdown at times like all cars. But hey no worry we will fix it. Flywheel shatted, starter motor yes we will fix it. And this vehicle has got 420000 Klms on it. Yes you heard me 420000 Klms VW all the way. We are a courier business and with Klms our vehicles down, our trade ins are every 5 years and VW will always have our business and MB on way in hell will we every buy another one, not even if they paid us to take one.Similar opinion? No Problems
I drive a 2008 309 medium wheel base manual It has done a little over 200000km had have had no major problems other then general ware and tare. The van itself is nice to drive unfortunately the 309 has a single turbo and is is quite gutless, Would recommend spending a little more on the twin turbo more powerful diesels. i have driven just about all of the other vans on the market and apart from the power none of them drive as nice as the merc does and when it comes time to replace i think i would have to go another sprinter. Things to watch out...Read more
for, EGR valve will go they get clogged up and there is no getting around it in any new diesel motor from any manufacturer, that costs around $2000 fitted. I replace the oil every 15000km myself (piece of mind). Replace the the fan belt pulleys (including belt tentioner) every 160000km -18000km as the bearings go in them and can seize and disintegrate. Clutch has shuttered from day one and i have driven a couple of other manual sprinters and they all appear to do the same thing its not bad and doesn't do it every time (i am still on original clutch and it doesn't seem to be like it will go anytime soon). Other than that its been a great van and would highly recommend. Reliable, Great to drive. Price is a little on the high side, Other then that nothing.Similar opinion? Best vans by far
My 2010 sprinter is my second sprinter, first one 2001 did 410,000kms before i sold it,having spent normal maintennace repairs ie brake pds,fan belt.my 2010 unit has now clocked up 100,000kms,with similar results so far.these units are great for long distance driving, low maintennance, low fuel use, great comfort.my units are on a mix or long distance, and short hilly city type of work
comfort on long runs, great fuel economy
only real critisysm i have is that in both models i have had 1st gear is too high a ratio for hilly starts.

Poor quality sprinter 2012 new problems avoid
Got a new mercedes 313 Cdi lwb it leaks water under dash when raining, the side loading door is a very poor fit big gaps and lets in water. Bad turbo lag dangerous trying to over take runs very poorly. Gateshead hunterstar merc don't care. They reply with we will look at it at its first service by then your 2004 sprinter which we have had in with a melted piston due to faulty new injectors we supplied might have a replacement engine by then (2 months later nothing so far)
Load space and that's all.
Expensive, leaks water in dash, leaks water side door, engine poor bad turbo lag mercedes aftercare rubbish don't care

Good
This model looks better and has more room but lacks in performance. There is much more storage and features in this model than previous. So far (4000Kms) reliablity has not been an issue, except passenger window would not go down, but was soon fixed. I prefered the previous model to drive, this one better to look at.
A biger vehicle than previous and the seating is an improvement with more leg space up front and nicer saets.
This model, 2007 is very slow of the mark, feels like you are driving with the handbrake on. Previous model had much more get up and go.

Terrible
vehicle was delivered new with these problems, 90lbs pressure in left tyres and 40 lbs in right tyres to make it track straight, took it back to have these problems rectified and mercedes refuse to fix them. thought by spending an extra 15 grand on german built would get me quality. 29 calls to mercedes service, hung up on 26 times after being left on hold for more 15 minutes each time, no return of calls or messages, long waits in reception, no ore m.b.'s for me
space, fuel economy, storage,
tyre wear, drive line vibrations, clutch shudder, terribly bad brakes, abs not working, air con stops working in conditions over 33%, rust, cheap and nasty plastics inside,

Bad
I drive a 311 CDI, the diesel is more expensive than petrol, it doesn't run more efficiently, the turbo lag is negligible, although if you are having issues with power, maybe consider the twin turbo rather than the single turbo ...
it's size and carrying capacity, also, that it is better than some of the other vehicle options out there - with the same size and carrying capacity, the gearbox is pretty good compared to other makes and models of almost the same van with the same carrying capacity and size.
the fuel efficiency, the handling, the interior, other than the fact that it's a mercedes benz every thing else about this vehicle is pretty bad, if you read the other reviews there seems to be a consensus

Not sure if you have to re-adjust the clutch after the initial "bedding in". You can ask the Merc. dealers- Performance Autos in Hobart, but not sure if there are any dealers up north or n west. I bet it cost you a fortune already.

Its been reprogramed twice but still not quite right changes ok doesn't have a problem, only when on a steep hill, I'm hoping some one has had the same problem spoken to Benz all they say it will need a new clutch but can't accept that as its only 2months since fitted.
