Auto focus upgrade
Come over from Pentax full frame and found the auto focus has eye detection in OVF !! Hallelujah there is life.....
Noisy shutter, struggling with learning new menu systems but to be expected after 10 years with another brand.
I'm use to 36mp and the Pentax k1 might have slightly nicer files, however it helps to nail focus first.
ISO50 is nice.
Weight is moderate, ergonomics ok.
Huge wealth of available lenses.
Great move to reignite my pro work.
D750 next
Purchased in January 2021 for $1,000.00.

wonderful full frame camera
I cannot live without this camera
it has all that one serious photographer wants and has a large range of beautiful lenses to go with
purchased second hand at half the cost from european camera specialist
amazing all the way
Various modes but I use it mostly on aperture priority.... does bracketing and also brackets the flash...

Great high resolution portrait camera
Had this camera for several years now. In fact, it has already been superseded by D810 and recently by D850. So no way I can take any good pics anymore. Haha, of course not. This is a fantastic camera and 36MP is plenty for me. White balance is fantastic, button are awesome letting you get to everything you need quickly without having to deep dive through the menus. t a vertical grip, that takes one more battery (I wish it can take two) and that makes it last a whole lot longer and it uses the grip battery first before the camera battery saving you from having to remove the vertical grip all the time. It is also not a speed machine compared with the other models mentioned. But if you understand its capabilities and use it for what it is designed for, it does a very good job indeed! It is used by prosumer, keen amateur and professionals. So you might be able to pick up a good second hand copy that is not so worn as other pro models for a significantly cheaper price. One thing I love about Nikon is that Nikon tends to put all the high end features through most of its cameras rather than locking them out apart from flagship models like some other companies do. BTW, I never use the LCD cover that comes with but it has after market stick on but removable protector on all LCD panels. Always had the impression that dirt will build up behind the supplied protector making it harder to see and possibly hurts the LCD more than it protects. Anyway, that's just my impression. Truly great camera
I use this for bird photography mainly. The images it produces have an impressive depth of field and astounding degree of detail. There is some moire, usually on finer bird feathers under certain lighting conditions. I use it with a 300 f2.8 (+ 1.4 and 2 x teles) and, 50mm, 105 and 14-24 Nikon lenses. ch is easy to change in a hurry. It has more features than I can ever use (bracketing etc) and I get about 200-300 shots before needing a new battery. In all, I love this camera and have never enjoyed shooting as much as with this. It punishes poor technique though and this has really forced me concentrate on improving myself. You can't blame the camera with this one
A magnificent effort. The Nikon D800e is a superb piece of equipment which handled well will produce better results than you have ever produced before. That assumes you are not using medium format or other very high end equipment. Even then, it will do many things as well but much more cheaply.
The camera is comparatively inexpensive. The lenses required to get the best out of it will quickly multiply its cost.

ill probably never be shooting fast sports. I agree that it is large but that is also not a problem for me. I use a LowePro 75 AW shoulder bag which fits it perfectly with a long lens attached. Another lens case can be bolted on. If you need any more with you a backpack is the go. Loaded up like that isn't like taking snaps with your iPhone but we can hardly expect it to be. Studio & Fine art camera only.
The D800 is very obviously aimed at the medium format market and intended for use in the studio or in fine art landscape etc scenarios and it excels in this area-possibly making the likes of Hasselblad etc obsolete?.
However as an allround imaging solution the D800 has some major drawbacks such as it's physical size, slow continuous shooting rate and massive file size.

Push Your Serious Photographic Skills To The Limit
The Nikon D800 is a complex, highly engineered camera. 36+ Mp means that the lenses you use need to be very good. These cost about as much if not more than the camers itself. If you're shooting technique isn't steady then this camera will show it up (hint: buy tripod). RAW files (images) are about 75mb so chances are your storage/computer hardware may need upgrading as well. Do not buy this camera unless photography is your passion and you are willing to learn to the photographic limit. Clarity is just unbelievable for a 35mm scale camera.
Very solid build, great feel and learning with it is a sheer joy.
Nothing; except it is far to complex unless you are serious about photography
