Just wanted a clock radio. How hard can it be?
I needed a clock radio so that if I woke during the night I could see the time and return to sleep without further waking myself up by fumbling around to check the time on my phone or watch. It was also my plan to wake up at the desired time to the sound of my chosen radio station. Clock radios have been around since the 1970s and I bough my last one in the 1980s. The concept is basic so I figured pretty much any clock radio would do the job. If I spent $10 I would expect something to last maybe a year to two. Choice was limited at the store I ...
Read morewent to and I had to spend nearly $30 but I thought what the heck it should be a good product. I was extremely disappointed. The time format is 24-hour time and cannot be changed. This was not mentioned on the box but wasn't a show-stopper. The show-stopper was the fact that the radio alarm begins soft then quickly loudens until it is blaring. The volume is so loud that if I were to be away and leave the alarm set it would wake the occupants of the adjoining units. In a further disappointment, all the buttons are tiny with very faint etching so you need strong light to see which button you need to press. I took the item back to the store for a refund. I then went to a second retailer and bought a $20 clock radio but it had the same 24-hour time and the escalating volume (bigger buttons though). I took it back also. I achieved success with the third store (Kmart) and their $9 no name brand. The first two clocks have merit if you are a deep sleeper and need to woken agressively but otherwise they are nearly as bad as a fire alarm.
I'm curious to know how the escalating volume feature is turned off. Be aware that my comments concern the fact that the volume starts low and gets loud (escalating volume not a static volume level). ...
Read moreWith both of the clocks it seemed to be a design intent that the volume of the radio (when used as an alarm) would escalate. My previous experience with clock radios is that the last volume setting for the radio is the volume that the radio will be at when you use it as the alarm. There was nothing in the instruction manuals for either of the clocks that commented on the escalating volume. The instructions adequately covered: - setting the time - tuning the stationsQuestions & Answers
