should I use water based oil or oil base for a new rough sawn fence and treated pine deck, I don't like dark colours, prefer more natural timber showing the grain

I find the oil is better takes longer to dry and has stronger smell but does a great job

Hi there!
Both would do a great job, and oil-based undoubtedly works well with treated pine, but to get the exact look you are after, it is best to call our technical team on 1800-086-690 and we'll set you on the right track!
We look forward to hearing from you!

I just applied your One Coat Decking Oil (water base) to my existing deck. Washed well before applying but didn’t sand.

It looks great but it’s now a week later it’s still a bit tacky when walked on. Just wondering if this is normal given it’s a high humidity area, or if I did something wrong. Any advice would be appreciated.

British Paints
British Paints ·

Hi Jim,

In higher temperatures, the coating can dry but remain tacky while it continues to cure. Please allow a full 7 days for it to fully cure, especially in warmer or higher humidity conditions.
If you still have any issues, please feel free to call us on 1800 086 690 and we'll help you get back on track!
Cheers,

I have the same problem, after 2.5 weeks it's still tacky?

Jim
Jim ·

This was my post from 8 months ago - the tackiness went away after a few weeks. I think I applied it too thick. For the last section I used a proper applicator, pretty much a mop with a wood block with cloth around it, which put much less oil on the deck and that section wasn't tacky after three days. The thicker areas were fine after about 3 1/2 weeks so give it a bit more time and it should be okay.

Hi Neil,
As Jim mentioned, the application thickness and humidity levels can also affect the drying times, and the tackiness should resolve in time. If you're still experiencing issues, please give us a call on 1800 086 690 and we'll look into this for you!

HI,

I have used this Decking oil on the deck, this deck is built from Ikea deck packs as a replacment to ugly tiles on our balcony so was placed over the top of outdoor ceramic tiles the oil over the last 12 months of applications has dripped through onto the tiles very badly. we only know this as well have just removed the entire deck and all the tiles are stained. I would like to know what product do you have that will pull this from the tiles as it is a right mess

I recently oiled the front deck, which faces north, with British Paints One Coat Decking Oil, after cleaning the deck first. I followed the instructions on the tin to the letter, stirring the thick sludge from the bottom and continuing to stir throughout the application process. It went on well and looked good, however now, two weeks later there are some issues. Shoe and boot prints are now showing and the surface becomes tacky or sticky in the sunlight. One of the people living in the house has a physical disability and uses a wheeled walker to aid mobility. This stickiness is a particular problem in this case. These issues are a real problem and we would like to know how to fix this please?

If you are doing 3 coats, how long do you need to wait to apply the third coat?

Bill

I have used the OIL based product and the WATER based product. The OIL based product was very good, but the WATER based product left a lot to be desired. I would not recommend it. Very thin and inefective. I switched to FeastWatson. Much Better. Three coats, each a day apart and it is still like day one. I switched to WATER based simply because the finish lasts longer.

We applied the one coat decking oil to our new deck about 3 weeks ago. It was fine until it rained yesterday. There are now dark splotchy patches all over where it got wet and there are patches where it appears to have come off altogether. Is there a way of fixing the darker patches because it now looks terrible?

Hi
we purchased the natural water based oil to put over our new Spotted Gum Decking. We have applied 2 Coats as the tin said 2 coats would be ok. This issue we did this 2 days ago. We went to work yesterday and let our dogs out the backyard. they are urinated on the decking and now where they have it has stained and is now a dark brown in patches. before oiling we did have this issue. Should we sand back the stains and do a third coat? we do a lot of entertaining and have 115sq mtrs of decking which was very expensive to have installed. our issue is that if the dogs urine has stained the decking which it now looks awful and is brand new and only just oiled what would happen if someone was to spill a drink like red wine or if birds were to poo on the decking as we have a lot of mulberry trees around and they have mulberry poo. I really need advise as we thought once we oiled it would protect against stains.

British Paints
British Paints ·

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for your question.
It sounds like Decking Oil hasn't dried yet. This would explain the lack of water/stain repellency. Once fully cured, it should repel water in the same way that paint does. 2 days isn't long enough for the coating to have fully cured, For our Water Based Decking Oil you're looking at around 7 days to be fully cured.

To remove the stains, give the effected areas a thorough scrub with a Deck Cleaner. Allow to dry, and if you think it needs it, apply one more thin coat to the entire deck.
If you would like further information, please call us on 13 25 25.

I just used BP water-based Natural on previously unstained pine decking. It's so awful and so yellow. Thick sludge on the bottom of the tin that didn't seem to disperse. I'm very unhappy. I applied two coats hoping for a miracle on the second coat but it's just a deeper yellow. What can I do to correct the colour?

Stoffel1
Stoffel1 ·

I did not have any sludge on the bottom of the tin. Did you use the natural? Maybe you used a paint type which looks the same tin wise but is more of a stain than a natural which just brings out the colour of the wood.

Catherine
Catherine ·

Thank you for your message. The tin is water-based decking oil and the colour is Natural. It's definitely not a stain or a paint and I would know the difference. I did some research online and there seems to be numerous complaints about the sediment and the colour of this particular product. On the upside, it looks good at night--it positively glows in the dark.

GRGS
GRGS ·

Hi Catherine, it isn't oil's fault. Pine timber is yellow naturally and after application of natural decking oil the colour will get stronger until it becomes orange.
At this stage your options are limited, you could try another coat with tinted oil however it won't make much difference since you already applied two coats.
Might need to at least light sand it back and start from scratch with staining.

Norman Steffen
Norman Steffen ·

I also experienced nothing like that. Is there a used by date on the Tin ? It was clear right through and no sludge at all at ours.

Catherine
Catherine ·

Thank you GRGS and Norman for your answers. Indeed, it does seem to be turning more orange. Which is better than yellow. I will live with it until it weathers, then sand back and stain. Thank you again for your help.

Hi Catherine,So many people complained about the problems that are associated with water-based clears for timber decking which was why I went for an oil-based colour stain.Hope your problem resolves over time but I DO recommended oil-based stains for a longer lasting results.

Thanks for your message. I wish I had done more homework first. I will wait it out and use oil-based stain next time. Thanks again

I have a spotted gum deck which is nearly a year old. It gets a lot of sun, and has been treated with cutek. The parts exposed to the sun faded very quickly, and we reapplied the cutek, only for it to fade again. Is there another product recommended.

Norman Steffen
Norman Steffen ·

Sorry I don't know. I just found the water based British sealer very good.

paul
paul ·

I really don't know. I suggest you contact a Paint Trade Centre and talk to them direct. Your spotted gum is too valuable to be experimenting with common brand paints or stains. Contact the Timber Advisory board if they still exist. Sorry i can't be more definite.

Brian
Brian ·

I used Cutek and had the same problem. My spotted gum deck split as well as faded.
About 12 months ago I used Feast and Watson decking oil (modified) over the top of Cutek 120 sq meters, it looked good for three months, bad mistake though it has flaked and peeled. Not sure what to use but Feast and Watson say it is the residual Cutek causing the problem. I will have to sand it back and start again. I know this is not much help in sorting your deck out but maybe some help in being really cautious if you are thinking about applying a water based (modified oil) product over the top

Hi there, Just read that you recommend 3 coats on new wood, we're using this on our fence would 2 coats be enough? the first coat is being put on very thick and we've already used 10l

paul
paul ·

Two ccoats is fine.Three coats for heavy traffic areas.

Norman Steffen
Norman Steffen ·

It soaks up a lot in the beginning I found. Later on it does not hurt the wallet as much . The water based I used and let it soak in 4 years ago I put on 4 coats but it was only a deck ( Pine ) 6X5 Square Meter and now I get away with 1 Coat every year.

British Paints
British Paints ·

Hi,
Thanks for your question. We recommend 3 coats for new bare timber because the 1st coat will be mostly absorbed by the timber. This is due to the high porosity or timber, once it has been weathered and prepared for coating. Please apply your first coat in line with the coverage rate on the can, as over-applying Decking Oil can elongate dry times and cause a sticky finish. 2 coats will simply not offer as much protection to your timber as 3.

Hi, we chose BP Water based Decking Oil to coat our previously uncoated fences and deck despite being unsure of how its durability compared to other available products. Please advise how long before we will need to re-do. Thanks. Rachel, Wellington, NZ.

Hi Rachel, our deck is 8 years old and I've applied 2 coats every year to protect the wood, with previous applications I've always used Cabots oil based but have found the BP water based oil to be just as good and definitely easier to apply.
All the best,
Brian.

I am using the British paints water based decking oil and I can't get the brown sludge to mix in. It just stays stuck on the bottom of the tin. Any suggestions?

comet
comet ·

hello take it back and use the oil based British paints one its the best and I will never use water based decking oil ever again. I used to use it all the time not British Paints though two coats went on like water the oil based one goes on like butter smooth only used one coat fantastic finish. What I would do barring you taking it back is to leave tin upside down overnight then when you ready to use it instead of mixing with a stirrer just shake the hell out of the can.Notice when they mix paints at paint store they use a shaking machine just shake as much as you can see if that helps.

Steward
Steward ·

Hello JP1. Take it back to the store and replace for another brand. This appears to be a problem with the British Paints product. No matter how much shaking was done on the machine in store, the sludge just did not dissolve and mix in. The store opened about 4 other tins to find they were all the same. I am surprised BP have not withdrawn this product and fixed this problem.

British Paints
British Paints ·

Hi JP1,

Thanks for choosing British Paints for your deck.

It is unusual that the pigment which can settle at the bottom of the can cannot be stirred in. Sometimes it just takes a little longer, depending on how long the product has being on the shelf.

We recommend a thorough stir with a strong stirring tool, sometimes this can take more than 1 minute.

If you are still having any further issues please call us on 13 25 25 and our customer support team will be able to assist you.

Kind Regards

We have a breaks new deck. Do we need to clean it first? Will one coat of British paint water based oil do and how long does it take to dry?

British Paints
British Paints ·

HI Kel,

Thanks for your question.

Congratulations on your new deck! Brand new timber needs to weather for 4-6 weeks before it can be coated. The reason for this is that timber is full of oils and tannins, and they need to leach out in order for a coating to properly adhere to your deck. Once you've waited 4-6 weeks, clean the deck with timber cleaner, and they you're ready to apply.

British Paints Water Based Decking Oil will be touch dry in 2 hours and recoat after 4 hours.
