Hey, I have 12 years old bushman fridge, changed Termostat 2 months ago. Now I'm in a long trip with her and just got to very top end. It is quite hot here so it is draining battery fast, it is set to -5 but when battery voltage drops to 11.8v it doesn't keep set temperature anymore. It's turning on but cooling only to - 2 then back to 2 and again to - 2. So my question is, is there any low voltage cutout at 11.7? Can I change it? Or is itbecause something else?

yes, there is a low voltage cut off. Its designed to do that to stop damaging your battery and to leave enough charge in it to start your car. The computer seems to be setting the low voltage temp to 0 degrees and that's the reason it fluctuating between -2 and +2, it is givinng you an averge of 0. is you battery good enough?

Kornel Kulawik

Yeah, It is running from new auxiliary battery which is deep cycle 100ah. 11.7 seems really high low voltage cut off.

Hi have had my bushman for over 5 yrs. No problems. Recent trip to Exmouth WA, Bushman suddenly would not go below +7degrees. Transferred frozen items to another freezer. Local fridge(car fridge) service advised the fan was not working. Local temp was 33 degs during the day and 22 degs at night. Cost to fix was about $300 including fan, also advised that the 120 mm fan was now replaced by a larger model.. Decided to find a fan and do repair on return to Perth. Can you advise the best fan to put in and if you can supply?

Hi. My Bushman SC35-52 has been running like a dream since the day I bought it roughly 5 years ago. Works fine on 240Volt, works fine on 12V with the car ignition on, but once the ignition is turned off the compressor wont't kick over. I have only purchased a new auxiliary battery a month ago. Anyone have any ideas on what the issue could be? Taa

My guess is your car is switching that outlet off when ignition is off

Ok. Any ideas why this would suddeny be happening after its work fine for 5 years? If i plug a phone charger in it charges, but the fridge wont kick over

Bushman Fridges
Bushman FridgesBushman Fridges

Hi Yenots, when your car is running the alternator puts out a strong current. When you switch it off, the current is only output from your battery which is always less than the alternator. You mentioned you have recently made some changes to your setup with a new auxiliary battery. Perhaps get the battery and the wiring / lead checked, this must be done under load (5A), to ensure the voltage at the socket isn't dropping under load. This is a common issue with new batteries / wiring. Any other queries, just give us a call at head office in Research, VIC. Cheers, BUSHMAN.

It does not have batteries as far as i can tell, the blue back light does not work and is warped, the plastic cover of the lcd panel is snapped and so are the plastic edges of the panel its self, it also takes hours to reach -22 and has none of the baskets or flat lid. I would love to fix this up if possible and keep it forever to remember her by but im a Dissability pensioner with little funds . Does anyone have some spare parts i can buy or tell me what it will cost to make it all new again? cheers0:

Hi Kornel, Pete and Don are spot on. If your fridge is 12 years old it is probably worth installing a new control panel. These are only $88 are repalce all of the electronics. You will also get a newer LCD screen and can do away with the AA batteries which are no longer needed. Feel free to call us on 03 9437 0737 and we can talk you through it. Cheers, BUSHMAN.

What size wiring is needed to run the bushman portable fridge from 12v battery?

1 answer
Bushman Fridges
Bushman FridgesBushman Fridges

Hi John,
There is a formula for required Volts, maximum Amps and Length of wire which will let you know what size wire to use.
We recommend using twin 6mm automotive wiring for a standard car or 4X4 install. This wiring is sufficient for 12 Volts x 8 Amps over a minimum of 6 Metres. So you have plenty of wiggle room for variations in voltage, amps and length.

Hi, from all the reviews on here it looks like the Bushman is a great fridge. From everyone's experience how well does it work as freezer AND fridge? For instance, when using the collar and high lid to make 52L, will the bottom 35L work well as a freezer wiht everything frozen, with everything above working as a fridge? Can anyone provide feedback if they have used their Bushman like this? I tried my father's Engel 40L and we had the bottom 20L as a freezer (everything frozen), and the top 20L as a fridge (with everything ice cold), using a piece of styrofoam in between. This worked brilliantly. Will the Bushman work as good as this? Thanks in advance, Dominic.

1 answer
Pete
Pete

I use mine how you described, but without the styrofoam. In this scenario you kinda ignore the temp reading on the screen and find the right one that keeps stuff frozen, gets your beer icy, but not iced and keeps your salad fresh at the top of the fridge. This is a VERY simple matter with the bushman.

Hi Bryan,
Sounds as though some Sod has pinched the batteries as there can not be a display without them. Later fridges did away with the batteries and fridge simply holds in memory the last programmed setting. As for the led line appearing on the display, this indicates the thermistor is at fault. Easely fixed, you can do it yourself so give us a call.

Hi Shane,

Under the sticker is the battery compartment. You will see you can lift the lid off the compartment . depending on the age og the fridge there will either be one or two AA batteries. fridges 15/20 yeras old have only one and thereafter until 2001 had two batteries.
Any problems please give us a call and we will run through it with you

I bought our Bushman fridge to replace an Engel that hardly ever shut down when used as a freezer. Placed all frozen foods into Bushman and checked next morning. The top items were half defrosted. I noticed the transformer which I sat on the high dome lid was very hot. It seems there is very little insulating value in the lid. Even when I placed a heavy blanket over the lid things never froze completely. So question is am I supposed to be able to use as a 52 litre freezer?

3 answers
Bushman Fridges
Bushman FridgesBushman Fridges

Hi Zads,
Thanks for the question. The 52L configuration comes with 3 vertically stackable baskets. The concept is designed to work with the natural thermal dynamics of the fridge. With the fridge set around -5ºC the top basket acts as a crisper (fruit, veges), the middle basket for refrigerating (cold meats, dairy) and the lower basket will keep things frozen. At the same time you can stand bottles up on the side and they will not freeze.
If you want to use the unit as a dedicated freezer only, we recommend using 35L or 45L modes so all your food is close to the evaporator plate. The high lid is not designed for freezing.
As for the transformer getting hot, this is normal and it is also why we keep the 240V outside of the fridge cabinet.
If you have any queries just give us a call at head office in Research anytime.
Best Regards,
BUSHMAN.

Hi Zads,
I have only owned the original Fridge/Freezer they didn't come with an extra high lids then so I can only talk about the Fridge/Freezer that I have
which has been great for what I have used, I've had items in freezer works fine and fridge works fine so as extra parts that add on I can't say.

Hi Zads
Fridge freezers are a difficult one .
I dont mean to be negative towards you but as you said you purchased a fridge not a freezer persay
The fact that you put the inverter on top is not a good idea that constant head will eventually effect the operation of the unit its a bit like putting the roast into the fridge to cook .
Perhaps the salesman or woman did not know what they were talking about when you purchased the unit or maybe you didnt make it clear what you wanted fridge or freezer .
I have 2 one a eva kool 170 litre that i had made specifically as a freezer but i can run as a fridge and a smaller 40litre used as a fridge .
Zads you have done the correct thing buying Aussie and they are reliable .
Perhaps a phone call to the manufacturer will give you better information .
I think i have said before ask service people what they think .
But please dont put the inverter on top of it your just asking the whole unit to work so much harder .
Good Luck

What Size battery do you have? What else do you run off your battery apart from Bushman? Some experts say dont discharge you battery below 40% capacity. So assume 60% of your battery as available. Work out total daily power in amp hours and deduct that from the 60% of total available battery. I use the Bushman, LED lights, phone chargers and iPad Chargers and 2 fans. I run a 120amp battery and recharge with 140 watt Maxray solar panels. Self sufficient as my usage is low and recharge capability high.

G'day,
Craigs reply was a really good one and his system, (120Ah battery with 140 watt solar panels) is heaps. You could get away with less. We always reccommend a 100Ah deep cycle battery and an 80 watt solar panel as minimum standard for peace of mind. Good wiring is really important as well.
Cheers,
Bushman.

Thanks for replying but that is the problem and if I had a plug I would do it myself. The standard lead is a bit of a let down to an otherwise solid looking fridge. I have been quoted $40 from the manufacturer but the thought of having to pay more on an already expensive item for a simple lead doesn't sit well with me.

Hi John,
We don't know if you are running it on the 240V Adaptor or 12V in the car. It sound as though the refrigerator is losing voltage and hitting low current cut out.
If you could give us a call here at BUSHMAN on 03 94370737 we can run through it with you and hopefully quickly sort out the problem.

Gary

It sounds as though your fridge is hitting low current cut out and not restarting once it has reached its set temperature. Try it on both 240V and 12V and see if it does the same. If it does then remove the 5 screws around the compressor compartment and you will see a toggle switch behind the digital thermostat. it will be in the OFF position. Turn this ON and see if the fridge starts. If it does then it indicales you are losing power through the digital thermostat. Bushman can supply you one and you can install it yourself.

John D
John D

Thank you it appears to be the problem as it the same on 240/12. I am not a handy man and 81 so I will need to have the fridge work done. Is this possible at your factory? John Dee.

Hi Gadget,

There are two sprung, clip down steel latches on the 35 litre cabinet and 10 litre extension collar.

This allows you to use the fridge in either 35, 42, 45 or 52 litre configuration.

All the Best,

Bushman Portable Fridge.

There are 2 small but effective spring loaded ( makes it possible to release a catch single handedly, great when you have an armfull of food or stubbies and you cannot put them down ) " over centre " catches.

Hi!
I have a Bushman SC35 with deep lid for 10 years & it has been faultless.
Q what wattage output solar panel would I need to run fridge 24/7 using 600cca battery as storage?
I have noticed that when connected to 12v 600cca battery the fridge needs to be well above the battery standard output i.e charging of car is fine.
Q2 If I was to connect to a solar panel with 12v 600cca battery will the voltage be sufficient to keep the battery up?
Thanks in advance for any advice operating my Bushman on the Sun/Battery.

Wayne,
Sorry I cannot answer your question as I have never owned or had any experience with solar panels. My Bushman is currently run off an independent standard size Land Cruiser battery wired to the L/Cruiser charging system so that whenever the Cruiser is running it is being charged. As we rarely stay in one place for more than 2 or 3 days the system works without a problem. If there was a problem it is only a matter of starting the L/Cruiser and let it run a little while. The Fifth Wheeler has 2 deep cycle batteries (charged from the L/Cruiser or the on board built in charging system supplied from either 240 volt mains or our "wired in" 3Kva Honda remote start gen set). Have had no problems with flat batteries, etc. In the van I installed a 150 litre EvaKool 12 volt compressor freezer/fridge which is also a faultless performer in all conditions (bottom hinge on the big door needs strengthening or positive support in rough terrain).
Sorry I could not be of more help - the Bushman is an excellent unit.
Kerry

James M
James M

It's a hard question to answer as it depends on where you are, sky conditions, set temperature of fridge etc. It's more important to use a deep cycle battery (100 amp hour AGM type is good) rather than a start battery which you will soon ruin if used as a fridge battery if not kept fully charged. Forget about the CCA figure, amp hour figure is what to look for. My solar panel is 120 watt and it kept my Bushman running 24/7 plus a laptop and a few other peripherals until it started playing up, requiring at least 12.9v to cycle on. Looks like you're having the same problem as I am, if so you'll need to run your engine a couple of times during the night to keep the fridge running. Hope this helps.
