Hi I’m using the CFP oil based on a teak table I’ve stained. I’ve left the stain dry for 3 hours. Applied first coat, came out great. Lightly sanded 12 hours later with 240. Applying second coat. There seems to be a few spots where the oil has become scaly. Like cracks. Wondering why and is there a solution? Thanks.

Can I use this on my deck?

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi there Rob,

No, unfortunately the Cabot's CFP in either the Oil based or Water based is not suitable for outdoor decking as the CFP does not contain any UV blockers and cannot withstand weathering or UV exposure.
Also, when wet, you may find the surface could become very slippery.

If you would like to discuss this further, or need any advice on an up-coming project, give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Can we use oil based cabots CFP over cab it's CFT water based Cabot floor - if so how do we do this, do we try to sand it off first -how long should we wait to sand and redo - we bought water based by mistake and it isn't yellow enough

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi Steven,

Yes, you can apply the Oil Based CFP over the top of the Water Based CFP, providing you follow these directions below;

Firstly, making sure you start with a clean surface, sand the flooring with 180 - 240 grit sandpaper and remove all traces of sanding dust.
Then to make sure you have sanded well enough for the coating to adhere, apply one coat to a small test area and allow to dry for 12 hours.
Once you have waited that dry time, press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly. If the coating comes off, you will need to sand back to bare timber.
If coating adheres well, you will be fine to continue on with the Oil Based CFP.

If you would like to discuss this further, or need any advice on an up-coming project, give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST

Hi.
I have a timber floor that has faded a bit close to windows and darkens to it's proper colour away from the windows. Can I add 100ml per L of Cabot's Interior oil based stain to the CFP oil based satin that is already on the floor in my next coat. Thanks.

I have recoated a pre finished floating floor which was lightly sanded prior to applying cabots cfp floor oil based . Six weeks later fine white marks are appearing and slight lifting is occurring. I had tested on samples of the existing floor prior to applying and there was no issue. Can you please advise me?

Can I use Cabot’s cfp floor oils based before stain and what’s it does?

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi there Adam,
Yes, you can use the Cabot’s CFP on a floor before applying a stain.
This is called a “sandwich” technique, and doing this will help you achieve a nice, even, uniformed looking colour.
Using this technique is great if you’ve never stained a floor before, if your timber is very porous, or if you’re worried there could be some patchiness or and uneven look.
Apply one coat of the CFP oil based to the floor and let dry.
Then stain with one coat of Cabot’s Stain & Varnish Oil Based using a 6 10mm nap roller. Additional coats can be applied if a deeper colour is required.
Lastly, Topcoat with Cabot's CFP Floor Oil Based with 3 coats to create that walk on surface.

Hopefully this answered your question for you Adam, if you have any more questions, or would like to discuss this further, please don’t hesitate to give our Help and Advice Team a call on 1800 011 006.
Their operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Hi
I'm sanding hardwood floors previously coated with water based CFP. Can I used oil based CFP to recoat them after sanding? If in some places I can't get all the previous coating off will that effect the finish of the oil based coat?
Thanks

Why do I need to sand between coats?

Flowerpot
Flowerpot ·

Sorry I’ve never used oil based Cabot’s. I’ve only used the water based. I cannot remember sanding between coats - we are amateurs so it would be best to ask this question of a professional.

Ivy
Ivy ·

Hi, I am an amateur as well, my understanding is that a light sanding removes the bubbles.
If you run your hand over the surface you will feel the raised parts, almost like you have painted over dirt.
The light sanding between the coats leaves a smoother more professional looking surface.

Hi
Could you please tell me if there is going to be any damaging effects from accidently adding a third volume of methylated spirits to my first coat of cfp floor oli instead of mineral turps. This is on the side batons of my staircase.
Thanks

What are the differences, if any, between the results from applying oil based Cabots CFP to a jarrah floor with a lambswool applicator and a 5 nap mohair roller?

I am using this product to coat a wooden table top. I have been using a brush and when I go back for any runs or to smooth out a small section it seems to have dried very quickly and going back over it removes the gloss. Should I use a lambs wool pad to apply instead of a brush. At present the table looks terrible and I am going to sand it back again. What would you suggest. Also the weather at present is very hot, could this be having an effect on the job.

My advice is not to use a brush at all,can use a foam roller but in Complete rolls from one side to the other and can also leave dry looking section.
Best out come is to to spray it thinned so as it can run through the gun.
Once the is down even for a minute don't try to repair any defects you will only make it worst

I painted a test patch and it failed the sticky tape test. Does this mean I can't use the oil based product?

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi Melanie,
There's a big difference between the oil and water based versions of CFP Floor. The oil based version requires sanding previously coated floors prior to coating. Only CFP Floor Water Based has the high adhesion to enable it to be applied over previously coated timber floors without sanding. The adhesion 'sticky-tape' test shows whether the water based formula will stick to the previous coating. If the test patch peels away, it shows that there will be adhesion issues between CFP Floor and the previous coating. In this case the only way to proceed is to sand the floor.
Hope this helps,
The Cabot's Team

Hi, I have impacted (5c piece size) my Cypress boards while moving furniture. This has broken through the Cabots CFP Oil Based coating. I'd like to reseal it before moisture gets in and if possible level the dent (though that's secondary). Should I use the Cabots repair pen, Oil based CFP or some other method? Here's a photo of the damage (not sure site will strip out this link?) Thanks in advance. http://www.users.on.net/~jdprosser/cabots_damage.jpg

Hi James,
Cabot's Touch Up Pens can be used to match the colour of your floors or topcoat. They might not help in this situation. You can lightly sand the dented area and apply one top coat of the existing floor coating. Call us on 1800 011 006 if you'd like to discuss further.

Im hearing a lot of good feedback about this product with the hardener added to it. Im looking at sanding back my bathroom and was wondering if this would be a good product to use. Im concerned as i will be stepping out of the shower directly onto the wood floor. would you say this product is waterproof?

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi Byron,
Thanks for your question.
CFP would be slippery when wet. We strongly recommend you use Intergrain UltraGrip in your coating to help make the area less slippery. Polyurethanes are an excellent moisture barrier, however moisture can still get into the timber if the coating is only on the top of the timber. Be mindful that cut outs around vanity units etc etc might allow moisture to build up and soak into the timber over time. Please call us on 1800 011 006, we'll help you with your project.

Hi, I have applied cfp oil base on my hardwood floors. First coat came up really good and was really happy with it . After giving a light sand and applying second coat it look like it's flaking .
Roughly 18hrs was allowed between coats .

Whys is it flaking ( orange peel ) ?

Cabot's
Cabot's ·

Hi Kyle,
Thanks for your question. Is the coating flaking or has it dried with an orange peel effect? Orange peel can be caused by application in hot conditions or rolling back over the area where coating has started to dry. Is the coating is flaking while being sanded, the flooring might be rejecting the coating. Could you please call us on 1800 011 006, we'll ask you a few more questions and see how we can help you.

When can i start moving furniture onto my floors after applying 3coats of oil based clear? How many hours or days when its safe to move bed tables etc onto the floors
Thanks

Cabot's ·

Hi Lulu,
Thanks for your question. To be sure, we'd suggest waiting 7 days prior to replacing heavy furniture items. You can have light foot traffic on the floors after 24 hours, and normal traffic after 72 hours.

Please call us if you have any further questions on 1800 011 006.
